Suspect was arrested, released last week

Police in Northern Virginia say Elias Abuelazam was arrested last week during a traffic stop and later released, The Associated Press reports.

Abuelazam was pulled over on a routine traffic stop at 1:15 a.m. on Aug. 5, Arlington County police say. When officers found out he was wanted on a simple assault warrant in Leesburg, he was released on personal recognizance, police say.

Say what? Cops find out there is a warrant so they let him go? There has got to be something wrong with that info.

what kind of vehicle was he driving; I understand the alleged perpertrator was driving a rather unique vehicle. That being said he does not particularly look like the depiction of him that I have often found on the net. should the police have known he was/is a serial killer?

Not to be overly sensitive to race, but if this man had been black with ANY kind of minor assault he would still be locked up and perhaps the most recent murder would have never happened!

You're full of crap. Blacks are let go ALL of the time on personal recognisance and commit further crimes. try reading the papers soemtime.

Hey folks! We are all taken back by the brutal nature of these crimes but the authorities are sworn to protect this guys rights just the same as they are yours and mine. If they knew he was a serial killer I'm sure they would have kept him in custody. I applaud all the efforts of the multi-jurisdictional task force for their hard work and quick capture or re-capture of the alleged killer and will turn my thoughts towards the victims of this horrible saga and their familes. Thank God he is off the streets!

As I understand it, he is in the US ILLEGALLY. I am pretty sure the US Constitution, and the rights laid out in it, apply to citizens of the US.

Thank you, Gator, for not succumbing to the typical attitude that the police are the dumbest people on the face of the planet. People with warrants are released on their own recognizance a lot more often than most realize, especially if it's a minor charge and not related to the current infraction. And even though police had their eyes on him as a potential suspect, there's no way for them to alert every law enforcement agency in the country to their unsubstantiated belief that he may be the guy responsible. (If it were substantiated they'd have charged him.) Even though the bad guys are always caught with great ease at the end of the episode on CSI, true investigations are hard work and often don't come with a scripted happy ending. In my opinion the law enforcement agencies involved in this investigation did a great job, and if this guy is found to be guilty of the crimes, they should be greatly rewarded and appreciated, not criticized. Dennis Rader went 30 years without being even suspected, yet the Wichita PD and KBI got huge recognition when he was finally caught. Again, if this guy is truly responsible (remember the whole "innocent until proven guilty" thing?), the end result of him paying for his crimes is what counts, not a small hiccup like this.

He was arrested in the vehicle that the police were on the lookout for and there was a knife and hammer in the vehicle. The vehicle was returned to him after he was released. I live in Flint and this information was disclosed in today's press conference.

Actually he was here legally. He had a green card per the prosecutor in Genesee County where most of the attacks occurred. He had the highest status an alien can have short of citizenship.

Blacks aren't always let go on they're own recognisance. You try to read the paper. Unbelievable that people have blinders on.
