Suspect stabbed man on recent Israel visit, police say

Police in Israel, where the suspect in 18 U.S. stabbings grew up, said today that the man, identified as Elias Abuelazam, 33, was believed to have been involved with drugs and stabbed a friend during a recent visit to Israel.

Acquaintances of the young Abuelazam told the Israeli newspaper Ma'ariv that he was a quiet young man who was occasionally beaten up because he was considered something of a "geek."

"That's why it's so surprising to me, this whole story," a former acquaintance told the newspaper.

Neighbors in the mixed-Arab-Jewish city of Ramle said Abuelazam left for the United States at age 20 after running afoul of "criminal elements" and getting involved with drugs. They said he intended to study to be a pharmacist but did not know whether he actually completed his studies.

On a visit to Beit She'an a few months ago, Abuelazam stabbed a friend in the neck "for no reason," a family acquaintance said.

Ramle police confirmed that the incident took place but said the victim chose not to press charges, Ma'ariv reported. They said Abuelazam got into an argument with the friend while they sat in a car, which led to a fight that ended when Abuelazam stabbed the man in the upper body with a screwdriver. The identity and condition of the man could not immediately be determined.

Abuelazam's mother locked herself in her house and refused to speak to a throng of reporters camped outside.

So then Israel, you sent him to the US so that he could continue his rampage, wow, what wonderful news that you consider American lives so trivial.

So Israel sent him. Huh? It was his mother that sent him, NOT ISRAEL. And, if you will notice, he is of Arabic desent not Jewish.

That is rampant anti-semitism, and a stupid thing to even contemplate saying. Why would ANY nation send one individual to randomlt stab people? What crazy motivation? Please explain.

did he say anything about being freak'n jewish ... he said "ISRAEL". You Jews always turn $hit around to make it look like everyone is picking on you. No wonder people hate you!

      #1.3 - Fri Aug 13, 2010 11:53 AM EDT

Israel is, by charter, a Jewish homeland. therefore, when he said "Israel" sent the stabber (even though the stabber is not Jewish), it is Anti-Semetic.

        #1.4 - Fri Aug 13, 2010 12:09 PM EDT

by its own charter ... no one else gives a crap. "this is our country and we will treat everyone else like $hit". again you point out the "stabber" is not a jew .... always distancing yourselves and in the process alienating yourselves. it’s always us and them .. even in israel. no wonder Christians, Arabs and Palestinians that live in israel hate you.

          #1.5 - Fri Aug 13, 2010 12:21 PM EDT

You are ignoring the facts. Israel is a Jewish state, who cares by which charter, etc... When the comment "So then Israel, you sent him to the US so that he could continue his rampage, wow, what wonderful news that you consider American lives so trivial." was made, the implication is that Israel, as a Jewish state, holds the lives of Americans to be trivial, and therefore sent a murderer to America to stab people. In my original comment, I simply pointed out that thet above quotes is ridiculous. Can you defend the quote? If not, then don't get snippy about a perfectly reasonable question. Re-read my original response.... WHY would any nation do that? I didn't mention the word Jew once, and the fact is, between Jews and Muslims, Israel is almost exclusively semetic.

Linda-where does it say he is of Arab decent? All they write is he is from a town that has Arabs. I read another articlewhere unnamed neighbors said his family was Christian. Unnamed, means they could be throwing it out there for the populace to swallow.

I find it strange that his origin is not named. I would say if he was Arab, the Jewish media would be trumpeting it to the heavens and beyond. Not one media article has definitively stated his religion. My guess is he is Jewish, although it doesn't really matter, because sociopaths come in all nationalities.

You guess wrong. You are also perpetuating anti-semetic stereotypes and should be ashamed of yourself.

jews are perpetuating their own stereotypes ... time and time again .... it’s not a stereotype ... it’s a consistent and predictable behavior

For starters, anybody that uses the word "Jewish media" is a bigot. Second, his name is a common Arab name, so unless he is a "Jewish" arab (somewhat of an oxymoron), he is either Christian or Muslim. His first name "Elias" is common among Christian Arabs.

The article says he's an Arab Christian.

Also, there are many Christian Arabs. A large percentage of Lebanon, for example, is comprised of Christian Arabs.

You should not post on subjects of which you have no knowledge, particularly when your comments impugn a religious or ethnic group, as did yours, and, as I noted above, perpetuate inaccurate stereotypes.

It makes no difference whether he is Jewish or Arab, Christian or Moslem, from another planet or wherever. He is a psychotic person who must be locked away for the rest of his live.

Too bad the article here doesn't detail his background. He's not Jewish. He's 1/2 Christian and 1/2 Muslim/Palestinian.

So typical of haters to go after Israel, the one democracy in the Mideast and where Arabs actually have more rights than in the countries ruled by despots, oil sheiks and terrorists.

The biggest joke of the century: Israel is a democracy. First you kick out or kill most of the previous inhabitants and bring in millions of people from outside. Keep the people you kicked out under your occupation and then call yourself a beacon of democracy in the region. If that is a beacon, I don't know what darkness is. Give me a break!

Where does it say that his mother shipped him here?

He is more than likely mentally disturbed, but where does it say he was diagnosed as such?

By this article, we don't even know if he was an American citizen or not.

Nor does it mention his religion, although what does that matter?

There's really not much to comment on here, other than to say, "oh".

Arab is a genetic ethnicity that has jews, muslims, christians, zoroastrians, druze, and on and on.

Can't you read, he wasn't released for the stabbings. He was basically released for a shoving match. No stabbings had occurred in Virginia at that point.

The article left out a few detail about this pile. First, the coward Abuelazam is a Palestinian; since the media is prohibited from identifying anyone as Palestinian or Arab if they happen to be a criminal, as that would shed bad light on Arabs. Apparently, this load is a Christian; if he had been a Muslim, they would have apologized, let him go, and appointed him Islamic ambassador to reach out to the Muslim community.

Abuelazam is also in the USA illegally. I guess that isn't important to know that he never should have even been here, and thus, should not have even been in a position to kill in the USA.

You would make Goebbels very proud of you. Keep repeating the Big Lie often enough and hope that people start believing it. No one kicked anyone out of Israel except 2000 years ago when the Romans did that to the Jews. There are a helluva lot more Arabs in Israel today than there were 60 years ago. Somehow with 16 Arab countries and over 600 million Arabs in the middle east, Arabs have a problem with 5 million Jews on a speck of land that is smaller than New Jersey. You know why? because it sticks in their craw to watch a few hardworking Jews turn a sand desert into one on the most vibrant countries in the world -- all this without a drop of oil.

Many of these rants seem to equate Arab with muslim. The largest population of muslims in the world is in Indonesia. There are virtually NO Arabs in Indonesia. Islam is a religion, many of its followers are Arabs, but by far not all. Even Afghanistan is NOT an Arab country. There are many, many Palestinian Christians. You must be born a Jew (ethnic group) but anyone can practice Judaism (religion).
