Jim Davis wants you to know that he really, really — really — regrets today's "Garfield" strip, which some people think might be offensive to veterans.
Yes, that's "Garfield" — representative of all that critics say is safe and bland in the comics world — and "offensive to veterans" in the same sentence.
In the strip — reproduced above, and available in context on garfield.com — the presumably squished spider from the first two panels asks his fellow spiders "why we celebrate National Stupid Day."
The problem: Today — "National Stupid Day" to the talking spiders in "Garfield" — is Veterans Day. Davis quickly issued a statement apologizing:
Dear Friends, Fans, and Veterans:
In what has to be the worst timing ever, the strip that runs in today's paper seems to be making a statement about Veterans Day. It absolutely, positively has nothing to do with this important day of remembrance.
Regarding today's Garfield comic strip , it was written almost a year ago and I had no idea when writing it that it would appear today — of all days. I do not use a calendar that lists holidays and other notable days, so when this strip was put in the queue, I had no idea it would run on Veterans Day. What are the odds? You can bet I'll have a calendar that lists EVERYTHING by my side in the future.
My brother Dave served in Vietnam. My son James is a Marine who has had two tours of duty, both in Iraq and Afghanistan. You'd have to go a long way to find someone who was more proud and grateful for what our veterans have done for all of us.
Please accept my sincere apologies for any offense today's Garfield may have created. It was unintentional and regrettable.
Jim Davis
"I think when Jim saw it in the paper today, I think his heart sunk and his hand turned cold," Kim Campbell, Davis' PR representative, told msnbc.com. "It's human error. Jim's embarrassed about it."
Here's the thing: It's hard to find anyone who was actually offended by the cartoon.
Oh, sure, Twitter and Facebook are full of comments calling it "controversial" and speculating that other people will be offended.
But not much actual offense.
Lesson: Online, we all think we're smarter and more tolerant than the other guy.

Don't see anything to be offended about. However, kind of strange that he has family in the military yet doesn't know when Veteran's Day is. It's the same day every year. Still, nothing to even worry about.
The fact that anyone, including me, a veteran, is offended by this shows the kind of world that the liberals (non veterans) have brought us.
this liberal combat vet wonders what the heck you are talking about?
Pretty funny. Not a Vet poke at all. Gary Owen!
DEBBIE, Correct, very funny, as is most of his work, but, it's Garry Owen! 2r's not one. Life time member 1st cav 1/7th 1966/67.
This Vietnam combat vet was in NO WAY offended.
Carry on!
The fact that anyone, including me, a veteran, is offended by this shows the kind of world that the liberals (non veterans) have brought us.
I am a vet as well, and it never occurred to me that the strip could possibly be aimed at vets.
Semper Fi, Jim. No offense intended and none taken. Pretty funny cartoon, but they almost always are. Love Garfield and have read the strip since the beginning. I've never seen you be offensive to anyone. Keep 'em coming. And thank your son for me. My children and grandchildren will sleep safe tonight because of him and his brothers and sisters in arms.
Vietnam vet.
There was no direct slur intended to American veterans. It might have been less noticed if it were not today. At least he didn't poke fun at Mohammed. That would have been a hate crime.
Air Force 65-69. You have to be looking for insults to find one here. Thanks for Garfield over the years, Jim. Safe return for your son.
If anyone finds this strip offensive, you need to express your outrage elsewhere!
That was kinda rude....
A vet with three tours in combat.
Did someone say someone made a misteak?
Oh well may bee we can look it up later.
I think that it was pretty freaking funny. It's nice to see that the Vets are taking it well too. It wasn't his fault at all and I think it's stupid that this is all the news has to talk about. I mean really, people need to stop complaining to complain. It's a freaking comic strip, don't take things so literally.
Besides, who could be angry at a fat orange cat?
As a veteran, I am not offended by the comic strip. I am touched, however, by Mr. Davis' apology. We all know and can understand schedule 'SNAFU's, and sometimes ca-ca happens.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the Veterans that have served before me, with me and after me. I'd also like to thank the future Veterans for continuing the work that was started by those who came before them!
Being a fellow hoosier, I know Jim Davis feels bad about this and he had no ill intent.
It appears to me that a lot of people are claiming to be Nam Vets. It never ceases to amaze me the number of you people that jump on the band wagon after the fact. I've came across many guys who claim to be vets of Nam but later found out they are frauds. If any of you who are making such and claim and are a fraud, well my friend, that I find very offensive, not this cartoon. And to all my brothers who were with me in the bush, I want to thank each of you for letting me use your shoulder to cry on, or when we shared stories of home. Anyways, you know who you are. This is quit different than when I came home. It seems nobody cared where or what we did. I was helping a wounded brother when someone threw garbage at him and told us both that we should of gotten killed instead of comming home. I could never figrue that one out. Peace comrads.
This guy need to get a life. There was nothing that even made me feel this was an insult to veterans. Its just a cartoon and everyone I talked to thought is was funny and no one thought it had anything to do with veterns
You know why nobody is complaining? Because those who would be offended are veterans. They do not whine about this sort of thing. Let this be a lesson to everyone. Stop LOOKING for things to whine about and get on with your lives! If something is said or written and it needs to be decoded to come to the conclusion that it was offensive then the person either did not mean it that way or he/she is too big of a coward to come out and say it straight. Either way it isn't worth our time.
Bad timing... I would think that someone so obviously rich and smart would pay more attention. It is apparent that he did not serve. I am a veteran as were most of my ancestors. It is a sad commentary that very few people appreciate what we did to protect the country..
George Mandeville
I will take this moment to make absolutely no comment on this non-issue. Rather, I will take this moment to express my appreciation to every person, man or woman, who has or is currently serving our country. Can we just take one day to put everything else aside, and praise the people who allow us to live the life that we do here in America? I am so proud of you, and this is your day. Take heart in knowing there are millions of people who don't take this day for granted. You are loved and appreciated.
I didn't find it offensive at all. As a matter of fact, I thought it was some funny $hit. And that's coming from an old retired Marine Gunny. People trying to stir up crap need to find something productive to do with their time.
I can assume that if Davis had written a cartoon about " tarbabies " on MLK's birthday , it would have been as easily dismissed as this " coincidental mistake " .
I'm glad you didn't blow that out of proportion.
You actually wrote the word "tarbabies." And tried to weave it into a coherent argument.
"Tarbabies."
Really?
I'm a veteran and read the comic this morning. It never crossed my mind that I should be offended. I was surprised to read the article and find out someone is upset; maybe they need to eat a pan of lasagna, crawl into their cat box and take a long nap.
