Violence erupts outside Casey Anthony trial

NBC's Kerry Sanders reports from Orlando, Florida where spectators started fighting while waiting in line this morning for seats in the Casey Anthony murder trial.

By Kerry Sanders, NBC News Correspondent

ORLANDO, Fla – It's come to fisticuffs.

The spectators who line up each day for seats in the Casey Anthony courtroom turned on each other early Friday.

Fists were thrown and there was scratching and a lot of screaming as more than 100 people jockeyed for position in line.

Each day there are between 50 and 62 seats for the public to enter the courtroom on the 23rd floor at the Orange County Courthouse.

Daily, the court administration hands out tickets.

'Running of the bulls'
In the 21 days this trial has been under way, the scene has become increasingly uglier.

Some call it "the running of the bulls" because no one is allowed on the court property to line up until 5:30 a.m.

In an admirable display of self-regulation, a few days ago those in line began writing numbers on the back of their hands with a Sharpie marker.

That seemingly eliminated the need for the "running of the bulls."

Defense attorneys for Casey Anthony begin laying out their case in her murder trial. NBC's Jay Gray reports.

But Friday morning, several folks decided that self-regulation system was "illegal."

Pushing and shoving was followed by punching and screaming.

Orlando police responded. Several of those in line were pulled out.

If it all sounds like those scenes from a bargain basement sale on Black Friday remember: this is a murder trial.

It just takes a quick trip to the 23rd floor here to remember: Two-year-old Caylee Anthony is dead. If convicted of first-degree murder, her 25-year-old mother Casey Anthony could be sentenced to death.

This trial has turned into yet another reality show.

And outside, there's a shameful circus.

For many, a deadly serious murder trial has become captivating reality TV. NBC's Kerry Sanders reports.

This has gotten ridiculous. If the judge had any sense at all, he would close the courtroom to spectators and eliminate this b.s. altogether.

the fact that little girl has been murdered in cold blood, by her own mother bears no relevance to this trial, its all a little charade to be, (coughing) a little famous, by saying, "i was there". suprised there hasnt been a vendor selling T's that say something the effect "I survived the Casey Anthoney Trial" or some retarded crap like that. but, day is still young.....

Agreed.

The public morbid interest in the sensational experience of viewing the trial for the murder of a baby girl is near-on as sickening as the murder itself. And the accused isn't guilty until jury convenes and a verdict is rendered. And for the blood-lust crazies, yes, evidence would lead me to believe a guilty verdict shall be handed down.

But still....close the courtroom. Ugh! Shame on them.

Who was it that coined the phrase "Media Circus"? The lining up for this sensationalized trial has justly pointed out as such. This reflects badly on the state of humanity as much as it does the Media `though as it proves the Media's point that it only plays to its audience.

Didn't the frenzy of the Gladitorial games in Ancient Rome also increase just before its decline? Think about this folks; have our lives become so pointless that we have to revel in others pain and suffering as a diversion from our own misery?

Okay, now on an actual serious note - I've deliberately avoided news of this trial precisely because I suspected it would become the "media circus" that it has. While I tend to poke fun and make light of otherwise "serious" news, I can find nothing the least bit entertaining about the murder of a toddler. Moreover, I fail to see how it has anything to do with politics. But, that's just me, and I mean no disrespect to those who may think otherwise.

I had decided not to post this, mostly because it's long and as it turned out, I just didn't think I @!$%#ing cared that much about what any of you think. But after refreshing this page and seeing that "Turkey" has been collapsed and that the insults are still flying, I feel a renewed compulsion to speak my piece:

Jesus, people are @!$%#ing ridiculous. Lately I've been drawn into reading the comments under news articles, and everybody ALWAYS @!$%#ing argues about EVERYTHING:

"People from Florida do NOT come from the South, nyah!"

"Germany's cool..." "No it's not, ask the jews, nYAH! And it was 6 mirrion, not 6 thousand, get it right, GAWD! Typical [insert random political party here]. Darp -de- durp de-DARP!"

Ok, sorry, that was actually a venting about every @!$%#er on a comment board that I've come across this week that nit-picks irrelevant details, or blasts someone's spelling or grammar for no good reason (as if that has anything to do with the validity of their actual content). I didn't read much past these first comments, and I've avoided commenting in other rooms, but the ridiculousness just builds and builds on this here internet - then I come in here, and already someone's talking about Florida, and then she's getting insulted, and then someone brings up Germany, and then someone mistypes 6,000, and someone corrects them, and then three more people correct them for good measure, then the poo is flying, and it's like "Oh god, Daddy, make the voices STOP!"

Of course we're going to argue, but try to stay on topic, at least, it all just gets so... petty. Perhaps it is you that needs to make yourself feel good by insulting those who you think are lesser than you, o-HO!

But no, seriously, the proper topic is: does this bitch deserve a good smack?

I happen to agree with that Turkey, and his detractors have missed his very valid point completely. Let me clarify it:

      1. Some people, both men and women, at times deserve to get smacked in the face for their behaviour. Repeatedly punching someone in the head and facial area qualifies you for this smacking, unless of course the other person has already started swinging, in which case you should probably already be doing something about that.

      2. It doesn't really matter who does the smacking. When some of us are watching someone else get wronged in a video, it makes us feel helpless, and angry, just on the principle that the offending party is getting away with such one-sided violence. So we imagine what WE would do if WE were there, and tell you how if it were ME, I would smack that bitch. But that's just righteous anger clouding the real point, and unfortunately, certain biased people will read what that Turkey said as "I'm looking for an excuse to hit a woman." But he's not saying that, not at all; the important statement being made is "it doesn't really matter WHO does it; SOMEone needs to smack that bitch, cause she deserves a good smackin."

And it's true, I watched the video after reading the hooplah, and that bitch SO deserves to get smacked. Not because it makes me feel manly; not because I'm misogynistic, or think all woman are bitches or ho's, or whatever you might erroneously think of me because of my non-PC opinion and whatever personal bias you might have regarding your own experiences. And it most certainly, absoLUTEly, has nothing at all to do with the strangled hookers in my basement.*

Now, I agree with "don't ever hit a woman" to a large extent, and I would defend a woman who was being beaten by a man, if I had to, based just on principle. But if I see some dude hit a girl, and I run over to defend her cause no else will, and the crowd's like, "She punched him full in the face, three or four times, pretty hard, too, and no one really did anything to stop her, so finally he was just like, EXCLAM!" then I would only be able to shake my head and say, "Stupid bitch." Because, female or not, that's what she has shown herself to be through her actions.

And just so you know, there are many situations where a guy might be "that stupid bitch," although guys are not usually called bitches, unless you add the modifer "little" to it, as in, "you whiny little bitch." I've known a few whiny little bitches throughout my life, and as far as I can remember, all of them were guys.

To be fair, maybe he should try to restrain her first, but it's not like the average man is trained to perform some non-violent takedown, and he probably can't effectively protect himself and stop her violence without hurting her. No one's even saying he has to use his full strength; he's not trying to hurt her, he's just trying to stop her from hurting him, and maybe teach her a valuable lesson: violence begets violence. And unless she's got some really good reason that we all don't know about, he should be able to put a stop to it with a good @!$%#ing smack. But he doesn't, he can't, because, "Oh noes, you can't hit a gir-uhl! What a bad, bad man he would be! Doesn't matter what she did, you never, ever, durp-de-darp-de DURP!" To be perfectly frank, the empowerment that such an attitude gives her (to just wildly punch whomever she feels like, without fear of repurcussion) is just @!$%#ed up - way more @!$%#ed up than someone defending themselves from her violence with their own violence.

Again, I agree with what that Turkey's point actually was: if you're stupid and mean enough to @!$%# with a bear for no other reason than you think you're somehow immune to the consequences, then you, especially, deserve those consequences. Nothing personal, no one's getting off on hitting you, but someone needs to do it in order to restore balance to the universe. And by the way, a good smack doesn't seriously hurt anyone. Some people will no doubt read "a good smack" as "raping and murdering," but anyone who's ever had a black eye will tell you, it goes away, and you're not permanently damaged. It's really not all that serious. Repeated smackings? Battered women in a cycle of abuse? All that's another story. But one good smack? Sometimes it's called for, no matter what sex you are.

*(Just to be clear to those with no sense of humour, I don't even have a basement. And yes, I could kick all of your asses. Probably at once.)

P.S. But seriously, I hate you guys.

I am glad that you do not agree with them, but I wish that people would actually read the first amendment because they would realize that what Phelps is doing is not constitutionally protected. The judge(s) that ruled that phelps and his followers are allowed to do this were/are completely wrong, but at least they have to be a certain distance away in most staes. Excerpt from the constitution on Fighting Words:

---There are certain well-defined and narrowly limited classes of speech, the prevention and punishment of which have never been thought to raise any constitutional problem. These include the lewd and obscene, the profane, the libelous, and the insulting or "fighting" words — those which by their very utterance inflict injury or tend to incite an immediate breach of the peace. It has been well observed that such utterances are no essential part of any exposition of ideas, and are of such slight social value as a step to truth that any benefit that may be derived from them is clearly outweighed by the social interest in order and morality.

There's plenty of jobs, if you got off your lazy azz and actually look for one instead of living off unemployment, food stamps and welfare.

Sorry Greg But there are no jobs out there, why not quit the one you have then rely on food stamps and unemployment and you will see there is no trickle down.

I love how the GOP brainwashed love getting shleped by the upper 2% and then push the issue in forums like this murder trial

                    @No Jobs out there

My wife is regional Human Resource Recruiter for a fortune 500 company. She has 100's of job openings in her region alone, positions that need filling...right now. She is one of 10 such recruiters attempting to fill 1,000 of jobs nationwide in this one company alone. This story is repeated all across America.

Her primary complaint, after not finding enough qualified applicants... is many of the actual people qualified and made job offers...refuse to accept them, electing rather to remain on un-employment.

True story. So don't tell me there's no jobs.

greg- there's no shame in having to collect unemployment insurance. It's not a handout from the government and taxpayers, it's not welfare or food stamps- you have to earn it. Unemployment insurance is paid for by your employer, a percentage of what you make. A lot of employers even consider it part of your "benefits" (although of course it isn't).

If you have a sh*tty job, you get little to no unemployment payments after you lose your job. If you have a great job, you get about 20% of your weekly salary- the max you can get. Try living off of that.

Clearly you know nothing about what you are talking about.

ps- if staying on unemployment insurance is more attractive than the jobs your wifes fortune 500 company is offering, those must be some s*itty jobs...

These people are probably also complaining about Obama not doing enough to create jobs for them..

I agree, there's no shame in collecting unemployment insurance. But if you refuse to work and instead choose to remain on un-employment... you should be ashamed.

if staying on unemployment insurance is more attractive than the jobs your wifes fortune 500 company is offering, those must be some s*itty jobs...

Look, entry level jobs, where you have no training, no experience pay competitive wages commensurate with the community you live in... A job is a job is a job.

And no all the jobs are not entry level...these are all office jobs that run the gamut from entry level to management...all with benefits and bonuses based on performance.

But if you're saying that there are ... and I quote "s*itty jobs" that Americans won't take, maybe that's why so many illegals are required for the American work force...Americans won't work? Is that what you are saying?

                    @Greg4422

If they didn't throw out resumes from people who are currently unemployed and only accepted those from people who are already working all the job's you claim that are there would be filled.

A study conducted with the major job recruiting companies said that 4 out of 5 companies will not even look at resumes from people currently unemployed. The reasoning was that "they were let go because of poor performance". This misnomer was called out as being completely ridiculous by job recruiters and flat out stated they are turning away some of the best possible employees out there.

So honestly saying that because your wife works for a fortune 500 company that has 1000's of job's to fill and no one is qualifies is most likely a pile of manure.

P.S. Sorry everyone for continuing to derail this thread. I just couldn't let this one go, so many people are hurting for work and to read that pile of drivel written by someone lucky enough to not be affected by the recession.

When did I ever say I wasn't effected by the recession? Yes a 1-2 years ago companies were laying off people by the 1000's. But that's not the case today.

Sure Obama haters will whine about where's the recovery... but the truth is companies are hiring again...many desperate to employ people. Everything I wrote is the truth. But as I said lazy bastards will sit on their asses... and cry oh there's no jobs and continue sitting on the couch and walking to the mail box for the Government check.

What is wrong with people? I'm sure if they can't get a seat at this particular trial, there are sadly many other murder trials they can attend. Someone even had the nerve to call it "history" the other night on television. Really? Why is it history? Have we lost touch with reality? This is a very sick woman who killed her baby. I can't even wrap my head around it, yet there are a bunch of clowns outside that court house every day trying to get a glimpse of that woman and thus have turned her into a celebrity. Stay home, people. Watch it on TV if you have to see it. You are making such complete fools of yourselves. Shameful.

One would think that people would find something a lot better and more productive to do rather than sit through a murder trial where a young child has been killed! It seems that many people have a really morbid sense of curiosity! That is totally sick! Of course you have idiots that don't think any system used to allow a limited number of people in the courthouse is fair, especially if they aren't the ones to get in! The longer I live the more disgusted I get with people like these! What in the world does Obama have to do with anything about this trial? Apparently a supporterwanting to make a political statement! I'll be glad when this trial is over and hopefully that young woman will get the puishment she so desperately needs! Perhaps we, as a nation can quit being so curious about a murderess! Red

If you can catch the whole trial on tv and the net, why is it so necessary for people to fight with each other to sit in the courtroom? As for the ones personally involved in the fight, i believe inbreeding may be responsible for that problem.

I'd be so ashamed if someone showed me in line for that trial, acting like an idiot as I jockey for position for the whole world to see. But instead, they do interviews and make stupid assumptions about how the trial is going, like they are some sort of expert because they were there. OMG - if only they knew how stupid they looked.

Lori - I agree that anyone who is so interested in watching a trial for murder is a little off in the head. Their time would be much better spent volunteering and actually helping someone. The main reason that this trial has turned into a circus is because the media has nothing better to do than to go overboard in hyping it. There are plenty of other trials where parents have killed their children that never reach the headlines. It's all a matter of whim with the media.

Even so, why does it matter so much to you? It's not hurting you in any way except that you make yourself look bad by labeling people as "a bunch of porch-sittin-banjo-pickin-dumb-a55 knuckleheaded inbreds". Maybe the description is a little too close to home for comfort?

People, your only making her stronger in her mind by giving her all of this attention. I have followed this case by reading articles and watching her interrogation on video sites. She is self centered, and all of this media hoopla is furthering making it all about her. We know it's about her murdered child- but there is no other person in her world. Anybody who would watch Nancy Grace and get all caught up in her sensationalist garbage is nothing but a mindless fool anyway. It's no surprise that these yayhoos started brawling outside the courtroom. They are all nothing but trash anyway, Nancy Grace included.

You hit that one on the head. Especially the part about Nancy Grace.

lived in florida for a short time. most people i met in saint petersburg were ex pats from wisconsin. nfl football games between buccaneers and packers have a majority in the stands waving packers flags. met many retired people who gave of their time and money (generously) for shore bird protection. walked many hours on glorious beaches and ate wonderful fruits and vegetables. met tourists from around the world who thought florida was a paradise. florida has their share of an undesirable element and a whooping share of just great people. hope you all get to experience the florida i know!

Helloooo, it's being televised live. Stay at home and watch it instead. You'll probably get a better view of everyone that way anyway.

Yeah, when they actually show the trial instead of just talking it into the ground, or showing commercials, supposedly during sidebars, etc.

That's a strange logic. He doesn't have to face God??

Way to go, spectators. Just go ahead and stomp 'sharpie lady's' heart and negate her hard work with foolish shenanigans.

On the other hand, ten bucks says these two pecker-woods purposely cut in line knowing the upheaval it would cause. The smiling smirk on the gray-haired guy's face IMO tells it all. What a cheap way to get 15 minutes.

Sounds like the specators have about as much class and breeding as Casey Anthony. None at all!!!

This just exemplifies the intellectual level of many people in this country. What is more important, this trial or the future of our country and education. People, go read a book on how to fix your computer or learn some math and science. Stop reading gossip magazines, they will make you stupid. Maybe then you won't be so fixated on a child killer. I am sick of turning on the news and hearing about this trial, such a waste of money. You wonder why our country is broke financially and morally.

Yes, I was actually, I work 80 % of my waking hours (20% for relaxation). I have news running in the background on a TV, so I hear them talk about this crap over and over and over and over again. It is all about ratings for CNN or any media network. I find that after an hour or 2 of news, I have had my fill for a while and it becomes just blurbs when I am working.

Maybe they're just jockeying for position so they can see her being led to the public square to be burned at the stake for murdering her two year old daughter.
