Occupy LA, Philly prepare for evictions

David Mcnew/Reuters

A man packs his personal belongings next to his tent Saturday in anticipation of a police raid to evict the Occupy LA encampment outside City Hall in Los Angeles. The deadline to vacate is 12:01 a.m. PST Monday.

Anti-Wall Street protesters appear to be taking few steps to vacate their Occupy encampments in Philadelphia and Los Angeles despite fast-approaching deadlines to move out.

Few broke down tents at the Occupy LA spread Saturday on the City Hall lawn — and most said they didn't intend to.

Protesters were abuzz with activity, but nearly all of it was aimed at how to deal with authorities come Monday's 12:01 a.m. PST deadline.

Some handed out signs mocked up to look like the city's notices to vacate, advertising a Monday morning "eviction block party."

Dozens attended a teach-in on resistance tactics, including how stay safe in the face of rubber bullets, tear gas canisters and pepper spray.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announced on Friday that despite his sympathy for the protesters' cause, it was time for the camp of nearly 500 tents to leave for the sake of public health and safety.

The mayor said the movement is at a "crossroads," and it must "move from holding a particular patch of park to spreading the message of economic justice."

Resist or move?
Will Picard, who sat Saturday in a tent amid his artwork with a "notice of eviction" sign posted outside, said the main organizers and most occupiers he knows intend to stay.

"Their plan is to resist the closure of this encampment and if that means getting arrested so be it," Picard said. "I think they just want to make the police tear it down rather than tear it down themselves."

But some agreed with the mayor that the protest had run its course.

"I'm going," said Luke Hagerman, who sat looking sad and resigned in the tent he's stayed in for a month. "I wish we could have got more done."

Police gave few specifics about what tactics they would use for those who had no intention of leaving.

Chief Charlie Beck said at Friday's news conference that officers would definitely not be sweeping through the camp and arresting everyone just after midnight.

But in an interview with the Los Angeles Times on Sunday, Beck said that despite the lack of confrontations in the camp's two-month run, he was realistic about what must happen.

"I have no illusions that everybody is going to leave," Beck told the Times. "We anticipate that we will have to make arrests."

But he added, "We certainly will not be the first ones to apply force."

New focus in Philly
In Philadelphia, The New York Times reported, Saturday looked nothing like a moving day despite Mayor Michael A. Nutter’s notice that protesters must leave the steps of City Hall by 5 p.m. Sunday.

The mayor said they could move across the street to Thomas Paine Plaza, but no more tents or overnight stays, NBC Philadelphia reported.

“I'm not going to try to predict what’s going to happen on Sunday at 5 p.m,” Nutter said at a Friday interview.

Protesters told the Times that the deadline had focused the local movement’s otherwise disorganized energies.

“Having this kind of pressure is a good thing,” Michael Pierce, 50, a member of Occupy Philadelphia’s information working group, said. “Without some of the struggles that the other cities have had, we’ve been sitting around, drinking coffee,” Mr. Pierce said. “This is bringing us back together.”

Police have swept tent cities in Portland, Ore., Oakland, Calif., New York City, Denver and Salt Lake City.

In other developments Saturday:

  • Occupy Salem, Ore., organizers said they will take their protests to Marion Square Park for daytime demonstrations after being ordered to remove all tents, waste, portable toilets and other structures from Willson Park, near the state Capitol.
  • In New York, Occupy Wall Street organizers said they plan to outside the Egyptian Embassy on Tuesday in solidarity with protesters in Cairo’s Tahrir Square.
  • An 18-year-old University of South Dakota freshman reported missing earlier this week turned up in New York after authorities traced a credit card purchase for bus tickets to the Big Apple. Protester Aaron Schmidt met up with his father and uncle in New York after spending two nights on a cardboard in Zuccotti Park.

go home. get out. do something productive with your life rather than camping...that is all you are doing...if given a job i bet a great many of you wouldn't/couldn't handle the discipline it takes to make it work for you...sad, sad, sad...you do not represent me...only a gross misjudgment of life in which your ideology overshadows reality.

What's ironic here is that they are protesting against the "1%"..... yet they ARE the "1%", because 99% percent of us wish that they would shut up and go home!

Perhaps unemployment, foreclosures, war, poverty, unaccounted for wall street crimes and other economic injustices don't affect you. But many with ethical humanitarian values support the occupy message of economic justice. This includes faith leaders and those with various spiritual practices, as seen in this short clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2CZZ0vhS8U

And let us suppose they do shut up and go home. Then what? We continue with business as usual. Outsource more jobs, charge exorbitant student loan interest rates, charge customers to use their own money (AKA debit card fee). I'll bet all of you complainers are retired kooks who love to gloat over someone else's misery, but don't let anyone come anywhere near your Medicare. Sometimes I wish Republicans would succeed in their quest of abolishing Medicare so that we can watch you old-timers occupy Congress and sleep in those same tents you seem to dislike so much. Shame on you.

Rufus,

Yeah that is totally acceptable right? To expect them to make everything all better in three months.

OWS has done more in three months then our Congress has done in six.

People that think that this economy can be fixed over night are delusional; it is going to take years, if not a decade or more.

Maybe less if China collapses economically.

You want reality? How about getting pushed out of your job and benefits after 20 years? I worked hard...put my family on hold and attempted to chase that American Dream only to be discarded when I needed benefits the most. I saved and planned only to be wipped out. Paid my premiums only to get canceled when I got sick. I paid for my home only to loose it to the medical bills. Get off your high horse you lucky soul...and ponder what becomes of you in this country with just a little run o bad luck.

No its deeply unfair and outta control. Don't take it out on the occupy movement....

Goooo Occupy

These OWS protesters are just a bunch of people sitting around with their hands out waiting for the nanny state to take care of them. Well guess what, life does not work that way. No one is guaranteed the American Dream, the only thing that is guaranteed is the right to pursue that dream through your own hard work and ambition. No one owes you anything except your right to live free and pursue your own dreams, so long as you do not infringe on others rights in doing so. No one owes you a house, no one owes you a job, no one owes you a college education. These are all things you must work for to get. Most of the rich got that way through their own hard work, perseverance, and sacrifice; they did not have it handed to them. Granted, some inherited their wealth, but somewhere along the line someone in their family worked to generate that wealth, it did not magically appear. Try reading about the sacrifices that some of the founders of big companies made to get their business started. Many of them barely scraped by for long periods of time while pursuing their dreams until the hard work started to pay off. You have no right to share in their wealth or demand that they give you some of that money unless you do something to earn it from them. Sitting on your azz in some park does not earn you anything. No one is going to forgive your student loans because you spent $50,000 majoring in art history and can't find a job. Why should those of us who studied subjects that actually had a career path attached to them and put in all the work now support you because you made a bad choice and took a easy fluff major so you could party all through school. This entitlement attitude needs to end. People need to get used to taking care of themselves again instead of looking to the government to take care of them.

Well Rufus, at least they are making an effort to change things. What are you doing? If OWS succeeds, I guarantee you those jobs will be coming back. And regarding your comment on banks, it is very hard to switch to another bank and get a better deal when the entire banking system is controlled by a handful of mega-banks, all working in concert. You go find a better deal in an oligopoly. The same scam is happening in the oil, telecom, health care airline and many other industries. If it weren't for the government trying to enforce whatever regulations remain, you'd be paying to inhale oxygen. Not to worry, that is all going to change soon if OWS gets more traction.

Rufus,

For one they decided to stand up for what they believe in and are exposing the corruption in our police forces as well. They are showing us that freedom of speech is not really true; you only get to speak as long as what you say does not offend someone who has the power to shut you down.

Also please show me where the Tea Party ever inspired a protest outside of the country, ever. As far as I know they never have. OWS has a massive following among the other protests happening around the world.

Only time will tell if you are right or if I am right but someone is going to be eating their words.

Also about the TAC thing, how many people actually did that? Not very many. Stop trying to defame an entire movement or segment of people based on the actions of a few.

The reason we don't know what the protesters want is because THEY don't know what they want. They just want to be part of the latest party, with a free place to live, some drugs, and the chance to get their '15 minutes of fame'.

I just wish they didn't call themselves the '99%', because they certainly don't have the support of the 99%. Perhaps they should call themselves the "10%" to be more accurate.

Interestingly, 51% of them disapprove of Obama's handling of the economy, and their unemployment rate is more than double the national average (per a former Democratic pollster).

I wonder if these 500 useful idiots in L.A. realize that had they just looked on Craigslist or other on-line job search engines they cold have all found a $10/hr. job, at minimum. I just looked on New York Cities jobs list on Craigslist, there are THOUSANDS!

Not that this is a career wage but, had they just worked a 40 hour work week while they were vacationing at City Hall lawn, each would have made $3,600 (before taxes) during the 9 weeks there. Now, had they all had some entrepreneurial ambition they could have pooled their money together for a tidy $1.8 MILLION DOLLARS! Again, before taxes. That's a hefty amount of seed money to launch a business. All they had to do was work, while they're working think of a venture they all believe in and begin to create commerce.

However, this requires hours of planning, writing a cohesive business plan, analyzing the market for the product or services viability. One year, three year and five year projections with possible problem exposures and solutions, if possible, must be created. Determination of production ability, market research, capital investment, competitive forces and distribution need to be evaluated. Marketing, promotions, advertising, networking, cross-channeling and other methods of awareness need to be compared and feasibility determined. Governance, executive positions, wages, benefits, human resources and by-laws are necessary.

There's a few dozen more things needed but this should at least get their new venture off the ground. After a couple years once the business is running, they can refuse any exorbitant wages, bonuses, stock options, perks or golden parachutes because that’s not fair. They need to make sure the business never makes a profit because we all know profits are bad. Tell all your investors and shareholders they will most likely not make any money from your company because greed is bad. Allow the union’s free-reign of wages, benefits and pensions as we all know they only care about the little guy. Allow the environmentalists, EPA and other happy groups to determine what you can produce, where and how, they are really concerned with helping trees, lizard, bunnies and other cute things rights. Finally tell the government you will give all your extra money to it to give to all those other people who don't want to work, it’s your responsibility to give them your hard earned money because you are now the 1%.

See how easy it is?

Good Luck 99%!

No Medicare, No SS, No military, No NASA, No public education, No tax exemptions, No political parties, No food stamps, No pork barrel projects, No paid politicians and most definitely No lobbying and No corporations. Now, how would you like to live in that environment? Haven't we been there already a few hundred years ago and decided to move on?

The poor, sad, homeless whiners from OWS with their socialist dreams and ideals of supposed "economic justice", meaning they get handed things others WORK FOR has NEVER been part of what the USA is about. They, as EVERYONE ELSE has the same chance here, meaning work hard, find your dream and pursue it, make the best of your life that you can, not blaming others for your shortcomings or failures. And if you fail, okay, don't get down on yourself, pick yourself up and TRY AGAIN, but don't give up.

1000's of jobs and 47 million out of work... somebody is lying... I wonder who?

Start a new business... have you heard that businesses are closing the doors??? there are not enough people, (or your definition might be pawns), that have jobs to buy products. You talk of a couple of years to get your company running... that would be great if you had a little nest egg to rely on while your business grows, other wise you lose your house, your business and you lose weight because food also cost money... heaven help you if you have kids and one gets sick.. or by nature, grows into a different size and needs clothes.

You are on this site, so probably you are not part of the 1%, but maybe top 20%/30%, maybe your job is secure, maybe you own it... but whichever, in order to stay in business..... you need customers, so good luck to you. I understand through OWS that there have been 1000's move there money out of big banks..... so look out, with your attitude.... you may be next

    ChrisWanker,

True, sadly. However getting the dirty cops out now might make things easier, even if new ones take their place eventually. It is the same with politics, or at least used to be. There used to be a grace period, if you will, between when a politician just entering the mosh pit could be expected to do the moral thing before becoming corrupted by some money handler for the industry.

That's not the case any more though, politicians are bought and paid for right out of the gate if not earlier and after they retire they get a cushy job for the business they worked for (watch Arizona Sen. Kyle closely, bet he retires to a high level position in some company he advocated for), but point taken.

Rufus, wrong. You are still thinking in a 'party matters' way. Political parties no longer matter in our society, they are archaic and must be eliminated. People should be elected based on more then just their party and any stereotypes there in. Electing a Republican to a position because they are supposed to be fiscally responsible is irresponsible of the voter. Republican, Democrat, Independant, X; they are all the same.

Also so what if they voted for Obama? Being a Democrat means only voting for Democrats? Voting along party lines leads to the mutual corruption of both parties, they know they at least have a chance to win because voters are stupid enough to vote against the other party. They fear that we will see what a sham the two party system is and vote based on the merit of the policies they are for or against. Voting along party lines leads to career politicians that corrupt the system with their backroom deals and vote whoring to the highest bidder.

There should only be one party in our Government; Americans.

Rufus, the two party system is a sham, it always has been. It is just another means of controlling the masses into doing what others want them to.

Also your quip about the one party thing I stated, you do not see Democrats, Republicans, and any other political affiliation as being Americans? We need to stop fighting over the two parties and come together. If the last two years have proven anything it is that the two party system is starting to fail. People are branded as either fascists or socialists based on their party and it breeds an enviornment of unreconciled differences to the point where compromise is no longer reachable.

That entire process is fomented by the two party system we have right now because people expect the members of a party to act a certain way, to pass certain laws. They do not expect them to do what is right even when it goes against what their party stands for. If Republicans could get over their no taxes ideology we might start seeing some action coming out of Congress, but instead they cling to Norquist like he was Jesus and sing his commandment.

If Democrats could get of their 'leave social programs alone' ideology we might see some action out of Congress, but instead they refuse to let cuts or changes take place in their benevolent cows.

You cannot claim to be a Democrat with out getting called a Marxist or socialist and you cannot claim to be a Republican without getting called a fascist or a racist. These stereotypes have become ingrained into the parties persona and are an easy, go to excuse to discredit someones ideas by those unwilling to listen.

Removing this hellish wall is the only way we are going to get through this as a country. Remaining segregated by party lines means that we all go down with the ship when it eventually starts to sink because no actions can take place due to partisanship.

Doesn't the entire bunch of OWS, indignants, homeless have responsibilities to themselves or others?.

The US is in trouble when this many people are able to tear up Cities, Parks, Public Places, causing havoc; including serious crime, and deaths.

Is this what Obama wants this Country to reduce it selves to; people who look like they live or the masses in poverty, resembling countries such as China, and the rogue Middle East??

Something is wrong with America at this moment in time. We are heading in the wrong direction. Our President endorses the masses who create others lives to be upset--

It is the Economy, and something that these people do not have; jobs, a structured life to contribute to make this Country Great again. Organization of one's life.

We are headed for another Egypt like scenario--more uprisings, chaos, and no Leadership.

It is a Change. For the Worse; Americans have Pride and Patriotism. Where is it?

for it will surely take place.
    It will not be delayed.

    4 “Look at the proud!
They trust in themselves, and their lives are crooked.
But the righteous will live by their faithfulness to God.[b]
    5 Wealth[c] is treacherous,
and the arrogant are never at rest.
They open their mouths as wide as the grave,[d]
and like death, they are never satisfied.
In their greed they have gathered up many nations
    and swallowed many peoples.

6 “But soon their captives will taunt them.
    They will mock them, saying,
    ‘What sorrow awaits you thieves!
Now you will get what you deserve!
    You’ve become rich by extortion,
but how much longer can this go on?’
7 Suddenly, your debtors will take action.
They will turn on you and take all you have,
while you stand trembling and helpless.
    8 Because you have plundered many nations;
now all the survivors will plunder you.
You committed murder throughout the countryside
and filled the towns with violence.

9 “What sorrow awaits you who build big houses
    with money gained dishonestly!
You believe your wealth will buy security,
putting your family’s nest beyond the reach of danger.
10 But by the murders you committed,
you have shamed your name and forfeited your lives.
11 The very stones in the walls cry out against you,
and the beams in the ceilings echo the complaint.

12 “What sorrow awaits you who build cities
with money gained through murder and corruption!
13 Has not the Lord of Heaven’s Armies promised
that the wealth of nations will turn to ashes?
    They work so hard,
    but all in vain!
14 For as the waters fill the sea,
the earth will be filled with an awareness
of the glory of the Lord.

15 “What sorrow awaits you who make your neighbors drunk!
You force your cup on them
so you can gloat over their shameful nakedness.
16 But soon it will be your turn to be disgraced.
    Come, drink and be exposed!
Drink from the cup of the Lord’s judgment,
and all your glory will be turned to shame.
17 You cut down the forests of Lebanon.
Now you will be cut down.
    You destroyed the wild animals,
so now their terror will be yours.
You committed murder throughout the countryside
and filled the towns with violence.

18 “What good is an idol carved by man,
or a cast image that deceives you?
How foolish to trust in your own creation—
a god that can’t even talk!
19 What sorrow awaits you who say to wooden idols,
    ‘Wake up and save us!’
To speechless stone images you say,
    ‘Rise up and teach us!’
Can an idol tell you what to do?
They may be overlaid with gold and silver,
    but they are lifeless inside.
20 But the Lord is in his holy Temple.
Let all the earth be silent before him.”

Yep, that 84 year old was getting really violent, she deserved to be sprayed right? You anti OWS people are so transparent...So, do you really think the OWS is going because tents come down...They did us a favor, we don't have to freeze, we can and have gone inside and are more organized than ever....get used to it...we're not going away.... There is much more power here than you realize....you are blind to what's really going on. You support the 1% and apearantly haven't listened to a word the OWS has been saying...guess you can't hear either...

It is called crowd control. If there are too many protestors, you cannot just go in and grab them all. You spray them to make them disperse. Just because you want to protest does not give you the right to break the law. Can I rob a bank if I wear a sign that says I represent the 99% and not expect the police to respond?

Freedom of speech? Pretty pathetic that you can lump in anything as speech. These people have no clear objective. If you ask 10 of them, you get 10 different answers on why they are there. You have people getting assaulted, raped, and mugged in these places. You have the protesters deficating and urinating where they want to. In the parks, on the streets, and even on the store owners entrances. They are not hurting wall street in the least. The people are hurting the small businesses, the mom and pop stores trying to eek out a living. They are putting these people out of business. Why on earth are they not protesting in Washington DC? These are the real crooks. Why is it that people think they are entitled to take from others who have earned it? Why is it that these people think they need their student loans paid off?

Mark, just because they have more than one thing to say doesn't mean they don't all believe in what they are saying. They don't want handouts, they want jobs that pay enough for them to live off. We used to have that. When I graduated, I had many jobs I could have taken. Today there is 1 job opening for every 4 looking for a job. Open your eyes and see that our world was destroyed by greedy politicians and greedy corporations. Most of the 1% did work for their money...they inherited it. You talk like those with money are the ones that work for it, but those without are the ones that helped make the 1% rich and then were spit on as not being needed anymore. Why do you think Unions have joined the OWS movement. I've seen many interviews with protesters that do have jobs and go there on their off days or even took time off to join the protesters. You make things up to suit your irrational sense of how things are in the world we live in. Open your eyes and actually speak with people that are protesters. There are many homeless that have moved into the groups too, because they want food, blankets, etc. They are not the same as the real protesters. It's not all young people out there either. People of all ages and backgrounds are out there protesting. Some of the wealthier people are giving because they believe what is said is true too. A march from Wall Street to Washington DC just happened, but you don't read the news or watch anything but Fox news...right?

@Truejoy, you act like one act is done a hundred times over. They have been very peaceful and it wouldn't cost the taxpayers as much if the police let them protest in peace instead of harassing them on an almost daily basis. I doubt you even live in Oakland...probably not even in California. You just complain because they are saying things you don't want to hear. That until things change the USA will become worse for the majority of it's citizens.

OWS is designed to raise civil unrest so the federal government can imopose martial law. If martial law is imposed than we the people will lose our right to bear arms and our right to vote next year.

OWS is the catalyst to the New World Order. In the NWO we the people will lose our rights of freedom. Our right to vote. Freedom of speech and religion. Our right to bear arms and our right to own property.

We the people will also be implanted with a computer chip to make us infertile and than they will feed us with genetically engineered food that will poison us to kill us.

OWS is an unsuccessful venture, which has already failed completely. So, it doesn't matter what they wanted. What they were . . . was like a vaccination-- we can recognize this junk now, so if it tries to enter our system again, we will stop it immediately. Someone wisely pointed out that, had it continued, American business owners would have gone out there and disabled them our own selves. The turnout, as a whole, in the US consisted of less than 30,000 people all over the whole country, which has 312 million citizens in it.

Again, Drawing The 2 Edged Sword of Truth I speak:

Then I saw another beast come up out of the earth. He had two horns like those of a lamb, but he spoke with the voice of a dragon. 12 He exercised all the authority of the first beast. And he required all the earth and its people to worship the first beast, whose fatal wound had been healed. 13 He did astounding miracles, even making fire flash down to earth from the sky while everyone was watching. 14 And with all the miracles he was allowed to perform on behalf of the first beast, he deceived all the people who belong to this world. He ordered the people to make a great statue of the first beast, who was fatally wounded and then came back to life. 15 He was then permitted to give life to this statue so that it could speak. Then the statue of the beast commanded that anyone refusing to worship it must die.

16 He required everyone—small and great, rich and poor, free and slave—to be given a mark on the right hand or on the forehead. 17 And no one could buy or sell anything without that mark, which was either the name of the beast or the number representing his name. 18 Wisdom is needed here. Let the one with understanding solve the meaning of the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man.[c] His number is 666.[d]

I feel that I have become Alice and have stepped through the Looking Glass into Wonderland where most the people *Rufus, Tim, DeeDee, etc.* have become Mad Hatters or March Hares. They make no sense in reality.

We are all people with good and bad in all of us. Those of you who wish to claim differently need to spend more time looking in the mirror instead of holding up a picture of a saint while saying you are looking into a mirror.

Not all of what President Obama has done as been good, but who doesn't have to learn when they get a new job. Of course, putting someone else with radical ideas in instead would make the world a better place? *sarcasm* Those same people that have used government money to solve the problems of their own states, or are congressmen/women that have shown no progress in solving our problems...these are the people to put in the President's seat? I think not. Most the time they sound as crazy as the Mad Hatter too.

I would prefer to keep the man that has improved the longer he has been in office and would more than likely improve more if given another 4 years. Unless someone less mad runs against him. Someone that has an actual plan to solve the problems of our country and wouldn't put us in another war because they have no idea of what foreign policy is. Until that times comes...my vote is for the man in office now.

I look at how we point out videos of Middle-Eastern countries like in Syria... where police are attacking protesters... we condemn it... we talk about how we have to spread our "democratic ideals" to these places to stop it, and how it is wrong... and then one looks at the videos of how the police in The States have handled things with the 99% crowd... and if you take away the narration... you can barely tell the two apart.

Again, Drawing The 2 Edged sword I speak:

            Romans 14

            The Danger of Criticism

1 Accept other believers who are weak in faith, and don’t argue with them about what they think is right or wrong. 2 For instance, one person believes it’s all right to eat anything. But another believer with a sensitive conscience will eat only vegetables. 3 Those who feel free to eat anything must not look down on those who don’t. And those who don’t eat certain foods must not condemn those who do, for God has accepted them. 4 Who are you to condemn someone else’s servants? They are responsible to the Lord, so let him judge whether they are right or wrong. And with the Lord’s help, they will do what is right and will receive his approval.

5 In the same way, some think one day is more holy than another day, while others think every day is alike. You should each be fully convinced that whichever day you choose is acceptable. 6 Those who worship the Lord on a special day do it to honor him. Those who eat any kind of food do so to honor the Lord, since they give thanks to God before eating. And those who refuse to eat certain foods also want to please the Lord and give thanks to God. 7 For we don’t live for ourselves or die for ourselves. 8 If we live, it’s to honor the Lord. And if we die, it’s to honor the Lord. So whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord. 9 Christ died and rose again for this very purpose—to be Lord both of the living and of the dead.

10 So why do you condemn another believer[a]? Why do you look down on another believer? Remember, we will all stand before the judgment seat of God. 11 For the Scriptures say,

“‘As surely as I live,’ says the Lord,
‘every knee will bend to me,
and every tongue will confess and give praise to God.[b]’”

12 Yes, each of us will give a personal account to God. 13 So let’s stop condemning each other. Decide instead to live in such a way that you will not cause another believer to stumble and fall.

14 I know and am convinced on the authority of the Lord Jesus that no food, in and of itself, is wrong to eat. But if someone believes it is wrong, then for that person it is wrong. 15 And if another believer is distressed by what you eat, you are not acting in love if you eat it. Don’t let your eating ruin someone for whom Christ died. 16 Then you will not be criticized for doing something you believe is good. 17 For the Kingdom of God is not a matter of what we eat or drink, but of living a life of goodness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. 18 If you serve Christ with this attitude, you will please God, and others will approve of you, too. 19 So then, let us aim for harmony in the church and try to build each other up.

20 Don’t tear apart the work of God over what you eat. Remember, all foods are acceptable, but it is wrong to eat something if it makes another person stumble. 21 It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything else if it might cause another believer to stumble. 22 You may believe there’s nothing wrong with what you are doing, but keep it between yourself and God. Blessed are those who don’t feel guilty for doing something they have decided is right. 23 But if you have doubts about whether or not you should eat something, you are sinning if you go ahead and do it. For you are not following your convictions. If you do anything you believe is not right, you are sinning.

And so the opposite of supporting OWS is supporting the Fox news followers, the Ann Rand based libertarian style new Republican, small government Tea Party and the idea that a few people really deserve far more in life than everyone else.....Ayn Rand, the mother of libertarianism (Objectivism) and the Author of 'The Virtues of Selfishness' and who in her interviews (available on you tube) declares all religions evil and immoral. She would surely find it disgusting to have supporters of her value system quoting the Bible.......However, she surely would be very proud of the anti Altruistic traits of so many putting their interest over those common folks who she surely would agree deserve nothing. Not sure if Rob Hall is trying to say Obama is the anti-Christ as someone said earlier or if Hall is encouraging tolerance of ideas in the most recent post...But, tea party Christians following values based on Rand's small gov ideals are certainly not making that argument on the rationalism she praised rather than God as a basis for morality.

Actually, Obama always tends to lay pretty low when the going gets tough.

To be honest, I do not know what any of the Occupy protests means. What is their goal? I agree with their critique of the 1% holding all of the wealth, but what are they accomplishing? Are people paying any attention? I am going to go and interview some of the people in the Occupy movement in downtown Binghamton.

My viewpoint of the movement is that it seems too small. Occupying is a small scale tactic. A better tactic is to have a huge protest of the 2012 elections and of our ineffective political system.

My viewpoints lie somewhere between extreme left wing socialism and extreme right wing liberatarianism. Every year, I hate paying taxes when I know that most of my tax money is wasted on wars and filling politicians' pockets. Every year, I look at the schools that the future generations are attending, and I wonder what has happened to this country. There are no more jobs left, none of the politicians seem to care about ordinary people. I would like to live in a country where I had control of how my tax money is spent. I want every dime of my tax money to be an investment in the future: a greener environment, a better college and K-12 educational system, health care for all working Americans, a welfare to work program, decreased costs for college, community college, and graduate schools, and a government that invests our tax money in creating jobs back at home. I want to see an America where we believe in ourselves and care for each other. I want politicians to take money and influence out of politics and make campaign finance laws that are reasonable. I also want a simplified tax code. I also want politicians to stop acting like they are in a circus by making unrealistic promises and exaggerated claims. The truth is: we need more parties than the Republican and Democratic parties we have today.

@Raphael, was anyone even speaking of those things until the Occupy movement started. They are making it possible for the rest of us to discuss the true wrongs in our world today. That is there point. They are making the wrongs known so we can all decide what to do next to fix it. They aren't trying to solve the problems themselves, but they want us all to discuss things together and work together to solve.

Let's hope we can overcome our difference and solve them together.

Look at all these losers, too lazy and/or dumb to get a job (obviously because they don't have anything else to do other than camping out in public parks) and then they want to represent Americans.

GO OUT .......AND GET A JOB!!!!!!!!

Freedom of speech is not freedom to crap on the grass in the city park. It's not living in a tent in the town square and shooting up drugs. It's not making mounds of trash in front of city hall for others to clean up. It's not blocking the streets and smashing windows and setting fires. These acts are what get the OWS people arrested and will continue to get them arrested. And shame on the knuckle-headed OWS women that take their kids out to these spectacles and expose them to the dangerous acts of fringe dwellers.

The OWS crowd and their supporters are simply a group of people who suck at life. This is America, everybody knows the rules. You work hard, you can get somewhere. You choose not to work hard, you get zip (or welfare, which is basically zip). You want to live in Greece or Europe where you can sit around and live your life on the dole? Go there. You deserve nothing, you must EARN it. Now, go back to your Mommy's basement and play some more X Box.

WE are the 53% ..... who pay income tax.

            1. Money Out Of Politics
            2. Restore the Glass-Steagal Act
            3. Draft Laws against the little known loophole that allows members of congress to pass legislation affecting Delaware Corporations in which they themselves are Investors.

Rufus44 we get your point...You hate Obama, you hate the OWS, seems you hate everything... I usually consider the source of my information and well, when I consider the information you put out there...I just skip over what you have to say...There is already too much hate in this world to add to it... so I just don't even consider anything you have to say...you are a hater...I don't happen to like haters...usually their hate is based on ignorance and fear....and why spend a moment reading anything that someone like that has to say... you are a waste of time...

dont forget the insider trading robert, they can pass a law just to make bucks off of the change in the markets that it brings instead of for the good of the citizens.

                #23.5 - Sun Nov 27, 2011 12:37 AM EST

                @Rufus:

so every statement you have ever made has been an original thought, then? These are the demands that we have agreed to. First, the criticism was that we did not have clear demands. Now our demands have been made clear, and all you can say is: 'well, you just copied and pasted that, so it's obviously worthless.' You've made it quite clear that you are firmly opposed to our movement, even though those three demands alone would probably benefit you greatly, which is ironic.

Rufus, you're a damned lie. I've went through your user history, and you have some sincere animosity towards the OWS crowd. I would go as far to say you sound like one of the paid shrills that demonize the movement (and yes, they've been shown on the news).

There is something deeply wrong with this country, and while the OWStreeters may not have everything down to a key, I'll support them over the likes of some whiny puss over the internet.

Really? It encourages violence? Can you tell me where the OWSers have attacked cops?

The Tea Partiers were carrying loaded rifles at their rallies, but nobody screamed bloody murder about it. Peaceful protesters get pepper sprayed and beaten, yet these nuts think it's their fault.

Honestly, which of you are getting to paid to post your hate, because I'm going through the user histories of some of you right now, and you're only posting on news stories in relation to OWS...

Though I am happy OWS protests have put the spotlight on the money corruption in American politics, I think it is time to move to the next phase, "what do we do to fix it ?"

I would suggest using the veto-proof legislative powers of the people at the state level to sponsor and pass a proposition (initiative), which requires all public elected representatives to sign a contract pledging not to accept campaign donations or gifts of a monetary value in excess of $25 from any source other than those who qualify as legal constituents of the particular representative.

                  @Ellis:

I agree with this, except that I don't think that it goes far enough. 'other than those who qualify as legal constituents..' remember, that line has been blurred by Citizens United. Which is why the overturning of that ruling is first on our list of demands.
