Boy beaten to death on 4th birthday

A Chicago boy was beaten to death Friday on what family members said was his fourth birthday.

Christopher Valdez died at his home near 51st and South Trumbull Avenue, in the city's South Side. A police spokesman said it's believed the boy died of blunt force trauma.

"My niece's boyfriend beat the baby to death, and I don't know exactly what happened. I've never even met the man," said Steven Valdez, the boy's great uncle.

Another uncle said he arrived at the home with a birthday cake for the youngster immediately after the incident. He said he restrained the boyfriend until police arrived.

Read the original story on NBC Chicago

The boyfriend, who was described as anti-social and violent, is in police custody. Family members said the boyfriend two weeks ago severely beat a dog for relieving himself in the home. They said they're in shock that a grown man could take out so much anger on a child.

"I just can't understand how anybody could do that," said Santiago Valdez, the boy's great-grandfather. "I just can't. It's just a shock to me."

My deepest condolences to the family.

One of those questions that make no sense. As parents, we are powerless over what our grown children do. My heart goes out to this little boy whose life was cut short by violence. It's events like these that make me believe in "an eye for an eye". I hope this S.O.B. is beaten again and again.

To Jo_Ann 666954,

It appears that you believe in situational morality! I agree that this perpetrator should receive maximum (read: capital punishment) by the courts.

However, the difference between us is that I do not wish for the police to do the dirty work for me. Why should you expect the police to go beyond the law to satisfy your blood-lust, and then wonder if you will grant them special dispensation for their act?

Randy, you are from Alaska? I see that in Alaska there is a very high incidence of interfamilial child sexual abuse.

I think this abuse issue is more fundemental than red state/blue state.

I saw a Texas judge beat his daughter the other day on youtube and although the judge was suspended, this happened in Texas, conservative state if there is one. if you want to make an argument then don't ignore the evidence that doesn't support your argument.

AKRandy, I'm not sure what people in Illinois are thinking, but I know what you're thinking. You're one of those people that have only two functioning brain cells. The "bad" one (liberals, gays, murderers, atheists, muslims, bad weather, obama, hitler, etc.) and the "good" one (anything Rush Limbaugh says). No thought process outside of that.

Yeah, like violence and abuse are relegated to specific geographic areas. Get a grip. This is a case of a sociopathic SOB being allowed free rein and not being stopped before something this dreadful happened. The incidence of young mothers with abusive boyfriends is all too high. Ever notice how often it is the boyfriend doing the abusing? Perhaps the young women need some educating, never, ever let an insane, out-of-control SOB in your home, your person or your near your child. Too bad these girls are incapable of learning from other's experience. Sooo terribly sad and senseless.

As to those wanting the SOB beaten by the cops...beating may be satisfying and I can guarantee that the cops dealing with this SOB would like nothing better than to get their hands on him, however, like some folks mentioned, there is often a form of retribution meted out in prison.

AKRandy: I have worked in animal rescue issues for many years. Without gag-worthy detail, South Carolina (conservative state?) alone equals the animal abuse reports for several states together. Atrocities. Bestiality on video. Notice this sociopath beat his dog for the pee mistake, and probably had been before and would do so again. It is now well recognized that animal abuse and child abuse go hand-in-hand. How did this guy get such access to this poor child? Where was everybody at the party?!! Answers please!!

Another sad day for defenseless children everywhere. At the risk of jumping the gun in anyway, I couldn't help but notice the article's comment about the niece's boyfriend "severely" beating dog for a wee-wee accident. It is that very behavior that SHOULD have spoken volumes to the niece and her immediately family, and had they taken action to get him out of their lives right then and there, this innocent baby might still be alive. That said, with that sort of demonstrable rage and brutality, it wouldn't surprise me one bit if the niece was deathly afraid of him for a variety of reasons including a perceived or verbal threat of the "if you ever leave me" variety. Such a person, in your face way to kill a human, the whole beating thing. Makes me wonder how and where along the way this man became so enraged that he seeks to kill animals and humans with his own two hands. A tragedy for all concerned. R.I.P. Baby Boy!

I support the death sentence on this one, its more humane than he treated that child, my sympathy to the family. this will never go away. If you send him to prison some sick woman will want to marry him and have his baby to further pollute the gene pool. this defective creature needs to be destroyed. its the proper thing to do.

I want to see this mother in jail as well. Mothers who stay with violent boyfriends or husbands need to be held accountable in the courts. This is not pre 1980s - domestic violence laws and stalker laws have been beefed up. Yes, it is still a life altering dramatic event to have to hide in a womens shelter or MOVE away to get away from a lunatic, but that's the price you pay when you sleep with men who are violent narcissistic. If she knew he had a propensity for violence, she endangered her own child and was a cocospiritor in the murder of her son.

We as liberals or conservatives are a thoughtful, insightful people who only want to make things better for all. I happen to be a conservative with many close liberal friends, as well. As one blogger said, paraphrasing "the crap that comes out of Hollywood...." or for that matter, primetime TV, some video games, etc, etc., we are deluged daily with negatives. I cant help but think about our border problems when Americans cant even say "no" to drugs, for example.

2 Kiadi at #1.11...I wonder where you get your information. The top 5 states of child abuse are

  • Kentucky
  • South Dakota
  • Florida
  • Nebraska
  • Missouri

Of these, two are blue states and 3 are red, so you can see that there is no determination as to which political party is the most offensive

Every state in the nation has some child abuse, any is horrific in my eyes, but you are just as political to counter AKRandy's position by spreading lies. Utah doesn't even come close to what you are trying to portray. This is just what one would expect from the left. I also wonder why you don't move/live on the left coast where you would feel more comfortable with your own kind? I know many lefties in Utah that are just as uncomfortable as you and this baffles me.

    #1.54 - Sat Dec 3, 2011 5:29 PM EST

There is really a lot more to this story as well as the political blogs. They are both indicators of where we are as a society. We have degraded to a social structure that is too damn afraid to say anything for fear we might offend someone. We have litigated the power of chastising children away from their parents and allow them to grow up with no recourse for bad and unacceptable behavior. Our penal systems are full of these " bad boys " as I call them. When they can get away with what ever they want and can do as they please then beating dogs and children are just next in the list of " what can I get away with ? ". " They can't touch me " is their attitude and " what are they going to do? ".

Old guys and gals know how things used to be before we became politically correct, before the insanity began. Today we have become a generation of people where it is OK to let a man beat a dog to death so that later he can kill a child because no one, not even the child's mother was strong enough to stand against this insanity. We have lost our pride as human beings. We have become a society that doesn't take responsibility for our own actions, looking to blame others for our own transgressions. I wonder if we can undo our social troubles and get back to a better time. That time when we had pride and loved our fellow man, when we took responsibility no matter how painful for our own foibles and when we were respectful of others. Dear God this is my Prayer, AMEN

Harley: The biggest arguement for capital punishment is that it is a "deterent" to crime. Obviously that's not working in Texas. The only way to stop crime is to prevent child abuse.

Unfortunately politicians on the left and right don't deal with the issue. It should be their biggest priority if America is to regain it's moral compass.

This is not a political matter but it is a moral one. Just maybe if we had less violance in movies, games and books it would help. Also need less porn on the TV, books and stores. In other words clean up our act. If I had seen this man beat a dog, I wouldn't have stayed with him. He has to leave the house sometime, I would pick up my child and leave. We have agency's that will give protection and place to stay, till you get on your feet. You can even call the police and they will take you and your child to a safe place to stay. With a person like that it is not excusable. This had to be a horrable death for the child. What I can't understand is when the uncle came, why didn't he beat the tar out of him and not just hold him till the police came. Beat him good, just not kill him let the law do that. I feel for this child and what he went through, and the family, but what I can't understand is why someone didn't do anything before this could happen . It just didn't have to happen.

Not all police are so "helpful" in getting you away from a freak who beats on you! I called the police to say my boyfriend was drunk and threatening to shoot me and he had just left to get his rifle in the other room. Cops showed up and took us BOTH to jail when HE said I hit him. I told him I was trying to protect myself because he was hitting me really hard across the side of my head and I had just had neck surgury. Afraid I was going to end up paralyzed. I told the truth. BUT they took us both. We had to pay a fine WHICH is what I think the city only cares about and then let go next morning.I left him , came back couple weeks later to get some of my stuff and he put my head through a brick wall. They hauled me away in an aid car and I refused to tell police how it happened. I couldn't afford another $200 fine!! Yeh, I love how helpful they are!! Nothing has changed with some cops in years..................

What is WRONG with people who have to see and blame politics, left/right for absolutely everything?

east coast: You bet I've got citations. Katty Kay was on Morning Joe earlier this month with statistics from a BBC study using US Government resources. Also, the Center for Disease Control and the American Psychiatric Foundation among others have been sounding the alarm for the past several years about America's child abuse crisis. American women kill more of their own children than any other mothers in the industrialized world. According to Kay, Texas has the highest rate of child murder in the country.

I personally consider the mother in this case to be an accomplice to her son's murder. Neglect just doesn't cover it.

The fact that Texas has the highest execution rate is well documented and was brought up in recent Presidential debates. As far as crime rates I'll refer you to Squidword who mentioned it. I wonder what the suicide rate is in the Lone Star State.

While you could make the argument that Texas having the highest death penalty rate hasn't stopped it having a high murder rate, you should also see that if a state had the highest death penalty rate but a low murder rate then the penalties must be being issued unfairly, no?

Yep - Because Americans were saints 125 years ago?

Give me a break, no one alive now should ever want to live how people did a century ago. I sure as hell don't want those "morals".

This is a disgusting thing to do. Then or now. And it has nothing to do with violence in movies or porn, give me a friggin break. Some people, throughout all time, have just had something mean and violent in them. It is, for whatever unfortunate reason, a part of humanity that will seemingly never go away (Some of them are born that way, others are made into it by experiences often just as horrific as those they inflict on others).. The best we can do is try to identify it and avoid it, and make sure it never gets a chance to repeat itself after a tragedy like this.

I'm not trying to be funny.

All this boyfriend knows is that this kid cries, poops and doesn't do exactly what he says like everyone else in his life does. But for the most part he's ok with the kid

Maybe this guy's anger is like "that little s**t?!! He's 4 f***ing years old and he's getting a birthday cake? What has he done to deserve that except cry, s**t and eat?"

The guy goes off. Smack smack smack however many times to this poor little kid's head. Maybe only once. It wouldn't take long to kill the little guy in a fit of rage. In the story, it said the uncle arrived with the cake and restrained the guy "immediately after the incident". That's what makes that theory plausible to me.

Executions don't stop a crime, they just make sure that that person will not commit another. Give us a break.

Actually they insure that the person will not cost the state any more money to keep him.

      Thats good enough for me.

I understand you liberals and democrats jumping to blame the other party for crimes you have nothng to do with, but maaaayyyybe save some of that scorn and think for a minute....why might these crimes be occuring. Of course, Texas is also one of our largest states.

I don't care what the child did to not deserve a cake or to deserve one for that matter... He didn't do ANYTHING to deserve death! You make it sound like you feel pity for the 'boyfriend'... Just saying...

And you people that are making this a political issue, need help too... Government has never solved problems, government is the problem and you guys want to make either side, left or right, the fall guy here. Sounds like you are the same people arguing for gun control because they kill. Kitchen steak knives kill too... OR is it the PERSON using it????? People need to learn to think for themselves and stop being robots of our society and government.

Someone, earlier commented about "steal a horse, kill them, steal something else, cut their hand off"...that is what the law is like in Saudi Arabia and yes, the crime rate is really low there...but, really??? The first sign of a psychopath is cruelty to animals. Says it in the DSM-V. Anyone who hits or beats up any innocent peron and/or animal is sick...just about as sick as those on here trying to make this political. So very sad.

I hope the state is financially able to afford the three hots and a cot for the next unknown number of years. And that without taking the money for his three hots and a cot out of the mouth of an innocent child.

The mother Crystal Valdez was convicted of abusing the then 3 year old and was spared a prison sentence in October. The boy was dead for 2 days when the uncle and his wife arrive for the boy's birthday. The mother and the boyfriend even put make up on the dead boy to conceal his injuries. The uncle called the police. Both the mother and her boyfriend should rot in jail for the rest of their life. Stay tuned, the mother might have a hand in the beating also.

OK maybe I'm reading this wrong. Was the make-up associated with the child's death or prior abuse? It takes a special kind of stupid to think make-up is going to hide death. Sometimes I think being criminally stupid should be used as a special circumstance in the conviction. (i.e. increased penalty.)

We don't kill mentally ill people, even violent ones who are incurable. Instead, send them to an institution where they are permanently locked up in a cell with no human contact other than a tray of food and water slipped through a hatch three times a day.

There are two innocents in this world....animals and children. If someone can hurt one, he or she can't be trusted with the other.

The g/f should have known when he beat the dog. Now her son is dead. Poor thing probably woke up all excited about his birthday, expecting cake and a party and so much fun, and this is what he gets.

I have a little niece and nephew. If I came into their home seeing this, I wouldn't have waited for the cops. But then, their parents wouldn't have allowed it in the first place.

It was hard for me to read the headline probably because I have kids that age. Anti-social behavior is very hard to treat. If not for the punishment he deserves for murdering a 4-year-old child, he should be executed or at least locked up for life for everyone else's safety. He is obviously a very violent and dangerous individual and he does pose a continuing threat to everyone around him.

Yet, I agree 100%, the mom is responsible for not protecting her child, if he had anger issues she should of said "you are no longer welcome in this house or for that matter in my familys life" simple as that.! Now, we only can pray for the child and the family that has to live thru this. My prayers and thoughts go out to them.

Sometimes once they get in they are hard to get out, you tell them to leave but they don't and they will kill you if you try to get them out. Police are not always helpful, until they kill you they say they can't do anything, although if she had called PETA or SPCA about the dog the week before maybe they would have done somethng to get him out. Something would have been on record as to his violence.

For all the people on here that don't think all the violence "we" watch and listen to on a daily basis are a contributing factor to the violence we are witnessing people doing in the world today, I think you are delusional. brenda-1478872 - You're right in one sense. Sometimes we get in and its hard to get out. Your sense of self and self-esteem has been destroyed and beaten out of you. However, you don't have the luxury of excuses when you have children, nor do you have the luxury of thinking of yourself. When it involves children they become the most important thing, even more so than you because they don't have a choice. Only the one you make for them. Who says you have to wait for the police to leave? Just leave. Even if you lose everything you own - it doesn't matter when you consider what you could lose if you stay. I had to make that choice. I chose my children. For that reason I say the mother is just as guilty as the boyfriend.

I agree with brenda...my mom had an ex she tried to get away from...he literally kidknapped her one night...she called us to say she was going out for a while...not knowing he had her with him in some bara and was not going to let her go. She passed a note to some woman in the bathroom and then that same woman took it to him. Luckily he only beat her and raped her, then fell asleep on our living room floor after he allowed her to come home. We crawled out a bedroom window and he was still passed out when the cops came to get him.

No restraining order stopped him. She was tols that, no matter who heard him threaten her and no matter what he had on his person to hurt her with, she better drag his body INTO the house after she killed him in self defense because, outside, it was murder...inside, it was self defense.

                      The victims are almost helpless.

However, this woman could have stopped her child from being touched if she'd kicked this POS out when she first saw what he was capable of.

Unfortunately, severely beating the dog a week earlier carries no weight in the courts, even though abusing an animal is precurser to abusing other humans. This piece of crap should have been in jail LONG before the murder of the young child occurred.

The 'mother' should carry some responsibility as well. Throwing everything out the window just to have some swinging dick to sleep with is tantamount to neglect...especially AFTER he 'severely beat' the dog.

I used to say that men were the only ones 'thinking with the small head'...but I'm coming to the realization that women are joining this sad, pathetic group.

I know what is wrong with this kind of woman - lack of understanding of the purpose in life, and self respect. They want everything free because they have sex object to entice some shameless idiots, and spent time just watching some hopeless TV programs and participating in silly gossips and doing nothing. I have met such crazy women in my life, instead of making this life and others worth its while, they destroy the sanctity of family life and its meaningfulness for their sex desire.

Gloria, you're partially right. As a parent, it's the mother's responsibility to protect her child. But the blame is squarely on the boyfriend. It's HIS fault.

Since none of us knows the entire story, we shouldn't judge. Perhaps this relationship started out okay and deteriorated -- happens all the time. Perhaps he threatened her and her family and she was frightened. (Some of you mentioned what the police should do to this creep, but none of you mentioned that the police have no interest in helping BEFORE something horrible happens.) Our police, lawmakers and judicial system also have no interest in punishing animal abuse, which could have kept this guy away from the little boy. All that said, once this joker hurt the dog, the mother (and the rest of the family -- especially the men) should have tried to do something. Beating a poor defenseless dog is usually a pretty good clue, and yet the uncle claims to have been surprised at the death of the poor little child.

Perhaps we need more discussions in schools about such things so girls understand this isn't just the way it is, and we should make better choices and not ever put up with this. And fathers need to man up and teach their boys the right way.

It has become clear that women and children are not respected in this country (our congress eliminates help for mothers and children - including education - every chance it gets). Has to start from the top.

Unfortunately, severely beating the dog a week earlier carries no weight in the courts, even though abusing an animal is precurser to abusing other humans.

Actually, it does carry weight in the courts. Animal abuse is a crime; depending on the act it can be as high as a felony.

The local Chicago news reported the boy's mother was also charged, I believe it said with negligence and attempting to conceal a homicide. Sounded like the mother might have been complicit with child abuse.

My sister is one of these women. I have no idea why she insists on being with and defending the @$$h0le POS she's with. She's wasting her life being with him. She supports him and gives him all the free booze and tobacco he wants, as he refuses to work (or else they'll garnish his wages for the child support he refuses to pay). I know firsthand that even obviously intelligent women can be so G-dam stupid.

Children are safest with a co-resident father, protecting children from abusive mothers. Biological fathers offer the most protection for the family and the least damage to the wife and children. Single moms are trading sexual favors with RightThereNowGuy #16 so he will play catch with their son for an afternoon.

Mother is to blame as well and should be charged for child endangerment. If parents are given tickets for running into a supermarket for 10 minutes with kids in front of the store, this mother deserves jail time.

MSNBC put out a female-friendly story. According to the Chicago Tribune (an article also nearly void of details), family witnessed the severe beating of a dog two weeks earlier by this man, and regardless, allowed this man back into their homes.

Hey, single moms, offer paternal certainty. It's estimated that 10% of American children call the wrong man "Dad."

Excellent point which seems to have gone unmentioned in this thread. The facts are, according to the Center fo Disease Control, American women kill more of their own children than any other mothers in the industrialized world. A 25% increase since 1985. Natural fathers, acting alone, are the least likely to kill their children. Especially under the age of five.

This mother may well have intentionally set her boy up for abuse. As a co-abuser she is just as guilty as the get-away driver in a bank robbery.

I wish there was an easy answer to that question. There are some women that seem to think they cannot live without or are somehow 'incomplete' without a man in their lives -- any man. I don't understand that either and I'm a woman. Some of them were raised to believe that by mothers who also believe that having ANY man somehow makes them a 'real' woman.

I lost a dear friend -- she was smart, pretty, well-educated -- when she met Her True Love. He was an abusive, violent alcoholic that shouldn't have been allowed outside of a cage. She got pregnant (so he'd 'have' to marry her) and he killed her instead, when she refused to have an abortion.

Her mother -- who's clinging to yet another loser -- blames her for her own murder. If she 'hadn't made him mad' he wouldn't have killed her. Maybe not then, but sooner or later, it would have happened.

Vincent Denali and RevSpinnaker - don't be so hasty to make that statement about the biological fathers. My ex-husband and the father of my two children was a sociopathic beast. Being a biological father doesn't automatically preclude a propensity for abuse. I took my kids and never looked back. That was one thing the judicial system was good for - I got full custody.

It's sad to see so many posters hoping for some sick kind of "vigilante justice" at the hands of prison inmates. The vast majority of prisoners suffered some form of child abuse themselves, much of which was sexual.

Think if this poor boy had survived. His mother would have continued to throw him to the dogs and there's a likely chance he would end up in prison himself.

Child abuse awareness, prevention and advocating for the rights and dignity of child victims, is the only way to prevent tragedies like this from happening.

I'm female and I am just as stymied and disgusted with mothers who need a man so bad that they allow their children to be hurt. My mother and older sister actually did the same thing. They needed a man in their lives so badly that they made excuses like "men are just like that, they're different, and women just have to understand." I hate those kind of women, but I love two of them in spite of what I endured from their men as the youngest girl in the family. And all three of us married at least one man who beat us.

I call them Enablers, Followers, and Weaklings. My mom and sister just don't have it in them to stand up. Sad. After 4 husbands for mom, each dead, I take care of her now and she follows me. Sister is on 3rd husband who has alzheimers now and finally is learning to take charge because she has to do so.

Me, I finally said "no more" and raised my kids alone and have never lived with a man since an abusive marriage I was lucky to excape. I choose to not cohabitate or marry. I wish women would try it and see that another person does not complete you, you complete yourself.

The American male has degraded himself into 'something' with no values and no conscience. Sorry to have to say that for my own gender but remember... there are a few of us 'good guys' still around who would help rather than hurt the woman he loves.

You are right John there are good men out there. My first husband was abusive at first it was just name calling, then a push or shove. Then a slap in the face, a punch in the arm, a hit in the head. When he lost his job he started drinking. And it was my fault if the baby was crying, or his food was to cold, he was getting worse. And yet he was always sorry. He'd run around at night with his buddies and then accuse me of cheating on him. So then sex was forced upon me. The night he knocked my teeth out I took my daughter and left. I never looked back. Several years later I met a wonderful man through a friend. It took a couple of years for me to trust again. But he never pushed and was patient. And yet he was always there for me. He is a Marine Vet and we have been married 8 yrs. now. So yes ladies there are some good men out there. Take your time, get to know them, watch how they treat their mothers, sisters, other females, watch them with animals and children. Time will let you know. R.I.P. little man. You are not forgotten.

If they want to change themselves that's fine but do NOT think staying with them and putting you or your child's life in danger is in any form a smart or helpful thing to do. Leave and say away.

Never looked back. He claimed it was an 'accident' when he smacked me -- yeah, that's why I had bruises on my arm.

There's a degree of conditioning -- the Abuser trains his victim to accept it and it always continues to accelerate. The trick is recognizing it BEFORE it happens.

These kind of people are the type that literally turn my stomach and make me physically, violently ill. I'm a single mother of a wonderful 3 year old little boy and my ex husband knows to call me if anything happens to him while he's in his care. My son is everything to me and I would gladly use any type of deadly force to protect him...including putting two in the skull of any piece of cranially-deficient trash like this jacktard if he so much as laid a slightly upset finger on him. There's no excuse for this, none whatoever. And to make matters worse, the mother KNEW how abusive the man was and still left her son alone in his care!! That woman needs to be sterilized and put to work taking care of mentally challenged children that have gotten that way as a result of abuse from people that were supposed to be taking care of them.

I'm afraid we will always have this element in our society, maybe some day a brain scan will tip us off on the potential perp, till then a swift execution is our best choice. if its defective get rid of it. there's no shame in that, the shame is in letting it go on.

Once I left my sons pit bull who is 17 years old and it took me longer than I expected at the store. She had an accident but I will say she went in the bathroom to wet. When I got home I just petted her and told her I was sorry for leaving her so Long and cleaned up the bathroom. Then we sat on the couch and watched a movie. She was upset because she had the accident and wanted her to know it wasn't her fault. Now no matter what if can't get all done in a coupe of hours I just go home and let her out. There is all ways another day to finish up what I need to do.

lonesome george: Very crucial and untold part of this story. What was the mother actually charged with? What's wrong with MSNBC for not mentioning that?

I agree, the dog probably peed out of fear. The poor boy must have lived his last days in terror after seeing that.

most of the people suing over sterilization are doing so because they were given the procedure without their knowledge or were forced to by a gaurdian or a court who did not beleive they had the mental capacity to raise children. Some of the now women who were forced into it have proven to be capable adults who could've adequately parented. Seems to me that under those conditions law suits are not only acceptable they should happen. When it comes to mothers who give birth to children addicted to drugs (in particular when its' multiple babies), neglect, beat, starve and allow their children to be mentally, physically and sexually abused should be forced to be sterilized.

I am elderly (Korean War vet), and rarely leave my home anymore. But I wear a .357 Magnum around the house because of the violence in our society. This violence is not caused by guns, it is caused by drugs and alcohol and basic immorality.

Agreed, public hangings would be a better deterrent. Hell in the old days horse thieves were hung, this child was much more valuable than a horse.

It is obvious he is guilty, he was caught in the act. Therefore, I agree there should not be any waste of tax money for his defense. something has to be done to stop the murder of innocent children. In the part of the US where I am at last week a guy cut his 2 yr old daughters head off because he was mad at her mother.

Why do these articles never point blame at the one person who is responsible for this "man" being around that child. The female who is the child's blood relative. Where the hell was she at when all this was going down? She should go to jail too.

As far as the daughter she should be fixed so she can no longer have children. I can't believe she did not see the danger this skum presented to her and the child.

Those of us who work to see that animal abusers are prosecuted are not surprised by this. Most people who abuse an animal will eventually hurt a person and unfortunately, in this case it was a four year old child with no defenses. I hope that this man never gets out of prison or receives the death penalty and I also hope that the Chicago courts are more agressive in prosecuting and convicting animal abusers and that these people are given the harshest sentence possible.

I can't help wondering if the mother is also a victim of abuse. It would be the only explanation I could find on why she would see a beaten dog and then leave her son with this guy. Not meant as an out for her, but violence victims tend to perpetuate the problem out of fear. I wish the family would have stepped in before this.

I think it was Jane Goodall who a few years ago was studying Chimpanzees in Africa when she noticed that if a female had a young baby and she lost her mate and acquired a new mate the new mate often killed the baby. She wondered how in the light if evolution that would make sense. She decided that he wanted to have a baby with her and he was just eliminating the competition.

Lions and other animals do the same thing.

We are closely related to Chimpanzees, I think we have about 99% the same DNA, so when a man is in the same situation he is just obeying a law of nature in his DNA and he kills the baby. She has the same DNA except for the Y chromosome so she abets the situation by leaving the child with him.

I would suppose no law could be passed to eliminate that situation. I read about it happening all the time.

But if you know of a situation where you suspect it may be happening or is happening you should report it to the proper authorities. You might save a child's life.

We are not monkeys, and the child is not competition, he is a child. Only to a sociopath or sick person would this child be looked on as trash to be disposed of.

Yes, she certainly is culpable (and incomprehensible) in not protecting her child. But let's not lose sight of the fact that it was the boyfriend who (allegedly) beat the 4-year-old boy to death.

So, put the boyfriend in jail for life and send the mother to jail for 5 years for being an irresponsible wretch.

Him being snipped should be irrelevant at this point, provided he is sent away for a LONG time. Where he is going, it will not matter whether or not he can father a child.

It is while reading some of these posts that I remember gladly that our Constitution has a provision against cruel and unusual punishment, which is generally interpreted to mean no dismemberment, no torture and no putting people to death in an intentionally cruel manner.

Regarding the "boyfriend", while I think execution would certainly be just, I would think most people would dread more spending the rest of their lives in a 8 by 6 cell, with little to look forward to in the passing of days except the eventual onset of illness and death. But if his state has a death penalty, that works too.

If he makes it to prison that would be too good for this piece of human excrement. i hope he rots in hell! I hopw this poor, innocent little boy rests in peace, albeit way too young.

It's just people verbally venting their anger about a horrific crime. Nothing wrong with a little physical pain for the worst of the worst, might work as a good deterrent.

Poor, poor child...What kind of society have we become when everyday you find reports of children being brutalized?

It is better than when it used to go unnoticed...the Humane Society was actually begun to protect children and animals from abusers. The child abuse over the past hundred years has lessened but now we report it and we care. It is the same for animal abuse.

What the hell is wrong with people? Putting a child at risk is worth it to have a boyfriend? It's unlikely this was the first time this "man" beat the child. His mother did nothing to protect him.

I agree. THe mother should be charged with endangerment of a child for bringing this monster into her home. Smarten up girls!

Looks like all the punishment details have been worked out by my fellow readers, but I think I might be able to think of one more. He would probably make a great meal for one of the Big Cats. A tiger would be my first choice.

That would be some serious abuse. He would probably poison the poor cat. Do what you want with this asshat, but don't abuse animals in the process.... ;)

For once, an issue so obvious that there is near-unanimity on what should happen. Chicago citizens, if the outcome doesn't please you, vote the bastards out of office who are thwarting your will.

I have read the original story on the Chicago tribune website and it says that when they found the child "It appeared that he may have been dead for several hours before emergency crews found him, according to police." Police were called because no one answered the door, despite relatives pounding on the door. Both the mother and live-in have been arrested.

I wonder who the "mother" misses most? Her son or her "man"?

RIP little one. May you be at peace and truly loved where you are.
