Foreclosure fraud whistleblower found dead

A notary public who signed tens of thousands of false documents in a massive foreclosure scam before blowing the whistle on the scandal has been found dead in her Las Vegas home.

NBC station KSNV of Las Vegas reported that the woman, Tracy Lawrence, 43, was scheduled to be sentenced Monday morning after she pleaded guilty this month to notarizing the signature of an individual not in her presence. She failed to show up for her hearing, and police found her body at her home later in the day.

It could not immediately be determined whether Lawrence, who faced up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $2,000, died of suicide or of natural causes, KSNV reported. Detectives said they had ruled out homicide.

Lawrence came forward earlier this month and blew the whistle on the operation, in which title officers Gary Trafford, 49, of Irvine, Calif., and Geraldine Sheppard, 62, of Santa Ana, Calif. — who worked for a Florida processing company used by most major banks to process repossessions — allegedly forged signatures on tens of thousands of default notices from 2005 to 2008.

Trafford and Sheppard were charged two weeks ago with 606 counts of offering false instruments for recording, false certification on certain instruments and notarization of the signature of a person not in the presence of a notary public. You can read a .pdf version of their indictment here.

Police said at the time that the alleged scam had thrown into question the legality of most Las Vegas home foreclosures in the past few years, leaving many people living in foreclosed-upon homes that they unknowingly don't actually own.

"I would suggest you review your documents and bring them to an expert and an attorney," said John Kelleher, chief deputy attorney general for Nevada's fraud unit.

Still waiting on one document just one document that shows the government forced a single bank to make a single loan to a single person that could not afford the loan just one document will do then you can go about blaming the government all you want for the housing foreclosure implosion all you want.

And they say there is no sign of any crime where she died. If the banks own the government from the president on down, don't you think a good bunch of hit agents could have come in & shut her up for good & leave no signs of FOWL Play.. Wake up Americans, old Pappy Buffet must be spinning in his grave after he wrote this decades ago. Either Pappy Buffet was lieing or his image was in need of repair or he knew he was right! Either way she is dead at 43 & she paid a heavy price no matter what the cause, she knew she did wrong, but what is the real cause of death, we will probly never know, only GOD will. You might ask your self, if she was about to be exposed things on the PE, the power elite will not stop at nothing to get what they want to stay in power & keep their wealth! Did she talk to SEC investigators?

Interesting, I'd like to more about this "susicide" that is mentioned (and spelled that way) in the article. By the way, I'd be happy to submit my CV in case msnbc is looking for an editor.

I believe that they should give a simple test to all who want to post anything here and elsewhere...you know....basic civics, spelling, grammar, math and simple science...and particularly HISTORY of the world and America. If one passes....POST AWAY......if one fails...TAKE THEIR KEYBOARD AWAY.

The problem of simpletons posting ridiculous, wingnutia ideas and "conspiracies" would be solved.

Do the same for VOTER IDENTIFICATION....maybe then we will not elect morons.....if we can keep morons away from the polls, the world would be a safer place.

And finally...I myself would be more than happy to see qualified and competent "editors" at these sites.

I wish people did have to pass a literacy test to vote. We would be a lot better off. We can't even get a voter id law on the books without everybody fighting it.

I agree that MSNBC should edit what they air, but so should the people who post here. When I read a post that has spelling or grammar errors, I dismiss the content of the post. I cannot take anyone seriously who wastes my time with ignorance. Doesn't anyone know sentence structure or grammar or spelling? If you choose to be lazy, you are insulting your audience. Many of us know the difference and are insulted indeed!

Yep, stabbed in the back 13 times. That's a possible suicide. Very suspicious. Maybe that is susicide. LOL

Interestingly, although the article mentions suicide or natural causes as the reason for her death, they make no mention of the possibility of homocide. Given that she had blown the whistle ,this should also be seriously considered as the cause of death.

She was murdered by someone big in Government. Perhaps evem G.W.Bush. It is time to get to the bottom of this and, if there is probable cause, conduct a citizen's arrest on the suspect.

If we didn't have all these government regulations, like the ones that make it illegal for citizens to storm the banks with pitchforks and mount the fraudsters head on a spike, things like this wouldn't happen.

              It's time to deregulate!

They'll say it was suicide, but we all know that forced "suicide" is the way the 1% kill off witnesses.

Exactly. In this economic climate there's no room for professional ethics. Right or wrong, just do what you're told.

The loans were corrupted when they were underwritten by bankers. Homeowners did not underwrite their loans.

There was a time in this country when banks and other financial institutions provided a service to the community. The profits were modest. No obscene bonuses. After Reagan was elected in 1980, deregulation began big time. Successive administrations of both parties encouraged deregulation. Trickle-down economics. Get government off our backs. Blame Washington. The problem with all that is that the people who run banks and financial institutions get greedy and become out of control. They are like out of control children who need a swat on the bottom once in awhile. I'd like to see strict regulation of the financial industry. Australia and Canada have that and they're doing very well, thank you. I wouldn't want government management of banks, but I believe its the job of government to protect the people. These greedy bastards need a government swat on the butt to keep 'em in line.

As much as I would like to comment about this lady's death... the ONLY thing ANYONE REALLY HAS at this point is "pure suspicion and speculation".

An average person, especially a lady of her age facing PRISON seems like a STRONG reason some may have for committing suicide?

If her death was the work of "evil doers" we'll all know soon.

Considering the TRILLIONS of dollars in FRAUD all the big banks got them selves in to... it is safe to say that we will see lots more crap, foreclosures, bankruptcies, arrests, prosecutions, deaths and probably a few more suicides?

Every so often, either "Mother Nature" or "GOD" or Instant Karma have ways of PURGING the system aka "flushing the toilet" on large quantities of the World's scum.

I believe "the flushing action may continue for YEARS"...

                              THIS IS WRONG!!!!!!

My question is: If it is a known fact that a person has lost their home due to mortgage fraud, why is the victim further victimized by having to move out of his/her home? It seems to me that the perpetrator should be the one to take a loss and go to jail. No doubt, millions of homes have been foreclosed on, and millions of people put out of doors because of fraud. The American dream has become a nightmare!

Just one more way that the rich get richer off the backs of the middle class and the poor. Whats worse is that they are allowed to do it, and get away with it! Then, the victim gets blamed for the crime and penalized...............This is what OWS is all about!
