Boy, 9, suspended for reportedly calling teacher 'cute'

A 9-year-old boy was suspended from school for two days for sexual harassment last week after he called his teacher "cute," his mother says.

Chiquita Lockett of Gastonia, N.C., told WSOC-TV of Charlotte, N.C., which first reported the story, that her 9-year-old son, Emanyea, shouldn't have been sent home from Brookside Elementary School.

"It's not like he went up to the woman and tried to grab her or touch her in a sexual way," Lockett told WSOC. "So why would he be suspended for two days?"

The Gaston County school district said it couldn't discuss the incident beyond confirming that Emanyea was suspended for "inappropriate behavior" after making "inappropriate statements."

I'm sincerely hoping there is more to this than we are hearing right now. Otherwise, these administrators really need to get their heads out of their asses with the "zero tolerence" policies.

This PC sh!t is out of control. She should have just said thank you and continued with her supposed job, teaching. The TEACHER is at fault here for making a mountain out of a mole hill. If SHE hadn't reported it as inappropriate behavior, it would have just ended.

Heck, Newt called his High School teacher cute and ended up marrying her.

Of course then he started messing around with another woman, failed to pay the bills on the house his wife and children were in. And then he divorced her because she had cancer and wasn't pretty enough or young enough for a president.

http://articles.latimes.com/1994-12-25/opinion/op-12904_1_family-values

Never mind Kid if you are smart you'll forget about her, who knows you might want to get into politics some day.

This is truly disturbing. A normal person would feel gratitude by such a remark from a young person.

To the teacher who did this to your student, here's what I have to say, you are a butt ugly itch! (add the letter B) Especially on the inside!

Well, there's a little more detail in the locally-reported story, but not much. The thing that's really silly about this is that the kid didn't even say it directly to a teacher - he was merely overheard telling another student that he thought a teacher was cute.

What a dyke. This bitch obviously has a chip on her shoulder the size of Texas and can't get over the fact that men will find her sexually attractive so she has to bust the nuts of an innocent 9 year old kid.

Isn't this the second incident in less than a week to be reported of a 9 y/o (or was the other one just 7) being suspended for "sexual harassment" in NC? The one last week was a kid who defended himself from a bully choking him by kicking him in the balls. Way to go kids.

If we are talking about a "union" teacher no further explanation is necessary. Know that all teachers unions have been infiltrated by the Democrat/communists/zizlamists and the only people that they are concerned about is their own stinking selves................

I am just trying to figure out the reason behind this bizarre overreaction.

The very first thought I had when I read this was EMMETT TILL.

In 1955, fourteen year old Emmett Till --who was black-- had the audacity to whistle at Carolyn Bryant --who is white-- and he wound up in the Tallahatchie River. His hate-filled murderers were never brought to justice.

I think the school board should take a long, hard look at this teacher - maybe there is nothing to it but, then again, maybe there is.

This is ridiculous. When I was a lad, I use to call my teachers pretty, cute and sometimes an azzhole if they acted like one. WTF is wrong with America when a little boy cannot complement a teacher.

This is just wrong, dumb, stupid, and if the teacher thinks it's sexual harassment, then maybe she shouldn't be teaching in the first place if she can't tell the difference between a little school boys complement from sexual harassment.

I say its time to get rid of the cute teacher, and get a teacher that has a brain.

Will she file a suit with ACLU that says it's discrimination? Pullleez, give me a break! Maybe she should find another job that she can be as tight - - fill in the blank as she wants to be. How about a government job that she can punish people at, perhaps a judge or DCFS job? Just saying. Not saying all DCFS workers and judges are all like that, in case anyone thinks I'm knocking them, which I'm not.

I have a nephew who is 4 yo and I do hope he doesn't do stuff like this at school. He is always calling me cute, cupcake, sweetie, anything to get his way. Obviously the goals of the educational system are not in proper order. And it appears the new goal is to start preparing our kids, who go to public schools, to be emotionless little drones. My daughter got in to trouble 15 years ago for kissing a boy on the playground(((she was 5))), The asses were going to suspend her for it. I argued, very loudly I might add, in the principals office and we agreed that a stern warning was "appropriate", B--- SH!T... But she didn't have to get suspended.

Now here we are 15 years later and this 9 year old boy is overheard by another "grown up" teacher, saying his teacher was cute to another kid. Regardless if even it was more she was hot or anything sexually driven..... you still don't suspend the kid ~ Educate them like your paid to do, mold that child, instead you reject him, seperate him, punish him for an act that is so simple to teach from....

That is our society people, sad as it is, but we do not have to be drones about it either - blogging and posting are a good start but we all know the way to actually change anything.

Peace and Good Will towards all!

What happened to the good old visit to the principals office? Educate the kid on appropriate behavior, maybe a detention or something. Sexual harrassment is a workplace term. The kid doesn't f'n work there. Ugh, he is just a baby. People suck sometimes. Great way to show a young mind how to deal and learn from an adult social situation. It's like we the adults are the children in this scenario. Poor kid. Embarassing.

So most people here don't beleive the kid could've been making up the "cute" remark

Of course that is a possibility!

This article doesn't explain a whole lot - seeing that the school handed down punishment of a two-day suspension, I hope they know more than what was reported here.

It would be nice to know what was said, and by whom... and how it got to the principal in the first place?

Did Emenyea say something worse than he, and his mother, are admitting to?

If a student overheard the comment and told a teacher, why did the teacher forward the comment to the principal?

I truly hope there is more to this story than what has been reported. With a two-day suspension, I hope the comment was not quite as innocent as what's being portrayed by the kid and his mother. Because, if 'cute' really is ALL that was said, I have to wonder about the people running this school. If that was ALL that was said, someone should look into why that is such a problem for these people.

The boy's mother, Chiquita Lockett, received a certified letter from the school, explaining why her son is accused of sexual harassment.

In the letter, school officials say Emanyea Lockett said a teacher was fine in a suggestive tone. He said he told a friend she was cute.

          http://www.gastongazette.com/articles/letter-64432-teacher-school.html

Sheeesh, the 9 yr old told a FRIEND a teacher was "cute" and he gets suspended for two days.

RE: message #1.52, by UMGator - You might try simmering down. There's no need to blow a gasket - especially since you COMPLETELY missed the actual point of what was said. I don't expect you to actually understand this, but, when you call names and make baseless accusations about people who you do not know anything about, it actually reflects far more poorly on YOU than it does the other person or people involved.

The article doesn't explain a whole lot - it certainly doesn't explain enough for me, personally, to form an opinion about who is right and who is wrong. However, for a student to be suspended for two days for saying that he thinks his teacher is 'cute' does not sound very rational to me.

Perhaps the kid's comment wasn't as innocent as he and his mother are claiming? Depending on what was said a two-day suspension could be entirely rational. This seems like a very likely senario given that similar things happen all the time - one person's word against anothers, a parent upset that there child is disciplined at school, etc... It happens!

Perhaps the person who reported the comment has a problem with the kid for some reason? I hate to think of that possibility, but there are plenty of instances where people have been vindictive and petty toward someone they don't like, or overreacted to something so innocent or insignificant. This, too, happens!

I took it that MrIndia was trying to think of potential reasons for what could be going on - so was I. Key word: *potential* reasons.

1st all u idiots ragging on the teacher for comming down on this ignorant little stain need to go back and read the article again. the teacher that this little punk was talking about had nothing to do with the supension of the little turd, it was a sub and the principal who enforced the school policy and stopped another injustice from being allowed simply because the offender was a minority. it is about time that someone said NO MORE and stood their ground refusing to let these people get away with inappropriate behavior simply because they play the race card when they are caught acting like animals .

and 2nd, the statement made by the ignorant little brat's mother,

( "It's not like he went up to the woman and tried to grab her or touch her in a sexual way,")

just goes to show that she is just as freaking ignorant as her little future felon. sexual harrasment is far from just putting ur hands on someone in an inappropriate manner.

Bravo!!! Finally someone with some common sense out of this group of losers. No one here knows all the facts and they automatically jump to the race card. People like most of these comments are the very reason the race card even exists. Raace or color shouldn't be a basis for anything and anyone that plays the Race card should be told to get over it and jailed or deported. The country has enough problems without these crybabies using a word the should have been banned 50 years ago.

Agreed, someone who thinks being called 'cute' by a 9y/o qualifies as a sexual / inappropriate advance has serious unresolved issues.

I've experienced this with other teachers. When surrounded by 9 year olds all day, some teachers revert to a 9 year old mentality.

Well, with a 9 y/o mentality, one would think "cute" equating to sexual advance would be the last thing they'd think of.

I had a huge crush on my 2nd grade teacher! And I think I became a very good student as a result, to try and impress her. She had my mother and I over for milk and cookies one day, and I still remember her fondly.

After following the links in this story, apparently the boy had made other comments to students and had been warned about making inappropriate statements before this incident. It doesn't specify exactly what he allegedly said, but she got a letter that stated the boy had been warned of calling other kids bad names. I'm not entirely sure there isn't more to this than the "cute" comment. Might be a rush to judgment going on here. Maybe not. I don't think cute is a harassing statement either. Just saying......

I've got to say, people, that if the kid said he'd do her, it's not all that uncommon. He's breathing, and knows a cute woman or girl when he sees one. It is natural for a young kid for that to not censor what comes out of his mouth if it is in his thoughts. Kids are getting to be a teen about that time, and that is when their hormones start to kick in. Knowing that, if I was a teacher, I would take his comment with a grain of salt. I wouldn't punish him for being a natural pre-teen!

and 2nd, the statement made by the ignorant little brat's mother,

( "It's not like he went up to the woman and tried to grab her or touch her in a sexual way,")

Mystic1 - No, I am not a teacher. I would go crazy if I had to deal with children all day long. I'm actually a 23 year old psych student.

sw philly - 'Herr' is my last name. It's German. My "wild little comments" consisted of saying, "You don't know the full story. Wait to proclaim judgements."

My comment was valid, and I stand by it. This isn't the full story, don't rush judgement. Your comment is not valid because all you are doing is saying how worthless my comment is. Mine stays on topic, yours does not.

            http://www.witn.com/home/headlines/135086853.html

WSOC-TV reported that a letter shared by the boy's mother says he has a history of using inappropriate language about other students. The woman says it's the first time she'd heard that about her son.

The boy said he called a teacher "cute," but the school says he used the word "fine." Brookside Elementary School says the child's comment amounts to sexual harassment.

The school's letter said the boy had been warned for using racial slurs and other derogatory words to describe other students.

It is interesting how there is more to this story on other websites.

It is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

Not knowing the entire "inappropriate behavior" after making "inappropriate statements." puts the caviot on it but good lord. Is this really that serious. The sad part is that they actually suspended someone over nothing. Worry if the kids come to school and bully someone. All hell and brimstone if you actually say something nice about someone. What's next getting a days suspension for saying something or someone is nice?

Hopefully, the details will be clarified and the parties involved will modify policies and reaction if it turns out to be the simple comment from a young child.

Political correctness is a direct result our country's conservative religious beliefs. Last time I checked, conservatives are far more aligned with the right.

tombones: PC is definitely to the left. Remember Clarence Thomas and Senate Hearings over the "pubic hair on a Coke" scandal? In the case of a school-boy crush, with a nine year old boy calling his teacher cute being suspended on harassment charges, this sounds more like feminists gone wild.

SpokaneWA, unfortunately NC has turned into a liberal @!$%# hole. These types of things did not happen in this state until the left wing extremist took over this state. Our last 2 liberal governors have turned North Carolina into Massolina. Both Governors are now in trouble for taking illegal funds, both who are left wing nut jobs.

Hobo is right on the money, this is all a result of the Political Correctness gone wild in our country. The liberal left wanted this country to be PC and now that they have it, this is what happens.

When I was in school we would knock our pencils off the desk and ask our teacher if she would pick it up. Bending over and showing us her cleavage... I guess that would be considered rape by today's liberal standards.

I had a serious crush on Father What-A-Waste when I was in high school and probably said he was cute on many occasions.

When I was 5 I had a crush on an M.P (military police) who was married and had a baby. I thought he was dreamy. I never talked to him because I was shy, but I would follow him to the park when he was with his family and hide in the bushes if they came too close. This would be stalking now a days, but it was just puppy love 50 years ago.

One of my students asked me to marry him (he was a senior, football player, popular type). I laughed and told him 'absolutely not.'

He answered back with, 'It's because I'm black, isn't it?' I laughed again and told him it was because he was too young. His reply was that he was 17 already. I answered with a dramatic, 'It's even worse than I thought! Go sit down.'

No harm, no foul, I thought. Apparently, he should have been expelled and put in a juvie ward. :eyeroll:

Sorry, but this just sounds too pat for me to swallow. I think there is more going on here than "cute." This boy had been warned before and the mother objected because she was not notified of the "other" comments he has made to other kids. Might be that this is not as simple as it appears on its' face...Maybe, I am dead wrong, but I have a hard time wrapping my mind around just a "cute" statement. Something more was said and the school isn't saying what. You all might be right about this, but let's consider all alternatives before we jump to conclusions and try to fire someone.

                          In the story itself ...

Emanyea told Eyewitness News a substitute teacher overheard him tell another student a teacher was cute.

If this is accurate (and complete) then these teachers (and their administration) have lost sight of reality.

The PC movement is sadly everywhere, and especially in the large metro areas around the country... and it's based in liberal thought...like ACLU, etc... and I do feel there's alot more common sense in the South than most Outlanders would know about. Gastonia NC is in the Charlotte NC metro area...

North Carolina (despite its name) is indeed a southern state. It seceded from the Union and everything. It is just as much a southern state as South Carolina. The division between North and South Carolina happened in the early 1700s, I believe and had nothing to do with slavery, secession, etc. The US hadn't even been formed at that time.

LIZ-561790 you are right, but not just because of his skin color.

if this kid were white he never would have been suspended for this because he would have been raised properly and been taught respect for others and been taught how to treat people ESPECIALLY women. if he were white he would have been taught that sexual harrasment is not something that is ok, and if he were white he would not be encouraged to express himself by being rude or rewarded for inappropriate conduct. and i bet with the upstanding black male role models in his life his intent was crystal clear to him.

It looks like we need to eliminate the immunity from lawsuits for school teachers and officials. How much more absurd then this can it get?

This is an irresponsible headline. WHen you read the story there are no facts present other than the mother's version of the story. Of course she will side with her son.

Jose, that is because the school district refused to talk about the incident. The one sided story is THEIR fault.

LIZ,As far as the race thing, it does not say the race of the teacher, she could have been black, white, Asian, Latina. And the mother's last name is Lockett. So the boy could have been half Latino, and black or white, not necessarily full Latino. But that doesn't matter anyway and should not be an issue. In my younger years, I helped out at a day care and was told by a couple of children that I was pretty. It was a well integrated day care, but I did not feel threatened or harassed. I just said "Thank You" and felt good about the compliment. It is just a sign of the ignorance of many of our protected "teachers" ( I use the term loosely).

Texana, the school district is obligated to keep this confidential. It's not their fault, it's a legal issue and we will never know their side. We only know one side of the story because Mom took it to the press. I am willing to bet there is more here than we know.

Texana Deb--The school system CAN'T talk about it. Student privacy laws forbid them.

That's the problem with stories like this. The mother can say anything she wants, and no one involved on the other side can say anything at all. If they do, they are violating the student's rights under FERPA and can be sued and/or lose their licenses.

I suppose the LETTER she received wasn't enough evidence from the School District."IT IS WHAT IT IS"

                                      #22.4 - Mon Dec 5, 2011 6:02 PM EST

Maybe, but if you follow the links to the whole story, the news media sat down with her and read the letter and it said that he had been warned before of calling other students bad names. Maybe, it is what it is, but maybe it isn't as simple as it appears.

BTW...Why wasn't she at the school asking what he had said after she got the letter rather than with an NBC reporter? That is where I would be. I would want them to tell me exactly what he has said in the past that warranted a warning. She just asked the boy during the interview and he denied it. When my son was suspended for fighting, I was at the principle's office that day. He has been bullied for years and shoved the guy into a locker after he clocked on the jaw--the bullying stopped. I had previously reported the bullying to the school. It only made it worse. So, I got his homework. Told him to do it and then enjoy his three days off. Strange things happen at school that parents often are not aware of--and my kid NEVER lies--right? (sarcasm)

I don't side with my son when he gets in trouble and has it coming to him. It's a foolish notion to think all peop-le are alike, and all are dishonest for someone they love. Perhaps you are basing this assumption on your traits? Most people base their assumptions on what they are made of, and I base that knowledge on observation.

HShaver...I base my assumptions on the totality of circumstances after hearing both sides of the story. It is then that I make a decision regarding if my son was right or wrong. Sometimes he was right and sometimes he was disciplined. Today, he is a good man--honest and hard working, but the years of bullying left their scars. I am glad that it ended, but how he ended it was against the school's rules of conduct and I let the suspension stand. I just didn't punish him further for his actions because it needed to happen....It just didn't need to happen on school grounds. The other kid was not seriously harmed--just a bruise on his jaw and his ego.

According to the school's code of conduct....he could have called her 'happy' instead of cute, and he still would have gotten the same punishment. There wasn't anything in the code against the term he used or his tone. It was because she took it, as a disruption. That's all.

Wow, and some say teachers don't have control in the classroom, HA.

@Please Understand - A bit prejudice and judgemental, are you? A coward homeschools? How exactly did you come up with that incredibly stupid conclusion? I will tell you who homeschools - A parent who is fed up with the PC, bureaucratic BS of the public school system and their subtle indoctrination of homosexuality, Islam, and any and everything else that is against our country's foundation and value system; A parent who wants to have more control over his/her children's education. A homeschooling parent and homeschooled children are as capable, or better capable, of interacting with society and are absolutely more capable of becoming valuable, contributing members of society because they don't have the distraction and stress of trying to "fit in", deal with bullies, pressure to try drugs, or have sex. They are at home in a safe environment with a teacher that genuinely loves and cares for them, one who isn't going to play favorites, or report the kid for something as innocent as saying "you're pretty/cute". Our public school system is garbage. It either dumbs down the students OR they require so much of the students that they can't possibly keep up and excel in any area. Not to mention the fact that there are 27-32 kids to ONE teacher and pretty much zero individual attention for any student that needs additional help. I myself am not a homeschool mom, but if there were any way in our current economy that our family of five could survive on my husband's one income and afford to homeschool, I would do it in a second. I do, however, know several homeschooling moms and they, along with their kids, are wonderful, intelligent people who functions and associates with everyone around them with more maturity and reason than you have exhibited.

My response was directed toward Mom of Many, who made it seem as though a situation like this one would cause a person to homeschool.

Responding to a situation like this by running away to a "safe" place like home is the definition of cowardly. Not everyone who homeschools is a coward, or doing it for cowardly reasons.

Sounds like a lot of the homeschool defenders have a serious problem with reading comprehension. Good luck to your antisocial, brainwashed offspring.
