Mugger left bloodied after attempt on MMA fighter

Chicago police say Anthony Miranda tried to rob an MMA fighter.

CHICAGO -- A convicted felon decided to mug an MMA fighter on the Southwest Side of Chicago, police say, and ended up paying a steep price.

Police did not release the victim's name but said he was able to ward off Anthony Miranda, 24, who ended up with two black eyes and a gunshot wound to the ankle after a tussle.

The victim was sitting in his parked car near 55th St. and Kenneth when Anthony Miranda, 24, walked up to the car asking for a lighter, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

When the victim did not have one, Miranda pulled out a handgun and demanded money, police officials said. He then demanded the victim get out of the car.

At some point, the victim was able to grab control of the gun while Miranda's attention was diverted. The two men wrestled on the ground and during the fight, Miranda accidentally discharged his gun, shooting himself in the ankle, police said.

The victim was able to pin down Miranda until police arrived and later told officials he was a martial arts expert and ultimate fighting champion.

Miranda was taken to Holy Cross Hospital with a face full of cuts and two black eyes, police said. He has been charged with armed robbery and aggravated discharge of a firearm, a class X felony.

Records show Miranda has several convictions, including at least one for a residential burglary. He was ordered held on $350,000 bond Sunday.

Now the mugger will probably turn around and sue the gym that trained the fighter to kick his butt! (and some bleeding heart judge will award him a ton of money!)

I liked the story, though.... Good job, fighter guy!

Glad to see someone stand up for themselves and beat the crap out of one of these punks. Honestly, I'd say he took it too easy on this piece of trash and should've given him a little more to think about. Some sites are reporting the mma fighter was "33 years old", and not all are saying the guy identified himself as a UFC former/current champion. The police may well be confusing "UFC" and "MMA" as being one and the same. Chicago Sun-Times is reporting intended victim was 33 years old, first name "Justin", from Des Plains, 6'2", 250lbs, Romanian background with broken English. Description, aside from the name (which doesn't sound Romainian in the least), appears to match Chicago's only current/former UFC champ, Belarusian-born Andrei Arlovski.

This guy would have to be high as a kite to try and jack a guy who looks like Arlovski, though.

Man, talk about instant Karma...wow. I don't see the fighter being sued by the moron, just because he had a Gun and the fighter didn't. That would make for some entertaining court TV.."so sir why are you sueing this guy?".. Reminds me of a local story; I'll call it a story because it may or may not be true. Here's the short version:

There was this dude around town. Every time he didn't get his way, he would claim that he was Pat Miletich & that he would kick your a$$.

Well, there was this one day when he (obviously) didn't know who he was talking to. He got into a altercation with this person & started screaming about who he was (supposedly).

Imagine the look on his face when Pat pulled out his drivers license and said: "Really?"

hahahahahaha

Lolly; some people here in Arizona don't even conceal their guns - strap em right on their hip like they are from a Tombstone reenactment or something. They are usually male - about 5'6" and 130#...lol.

When I took my son to Wrigley Field I told him if any of these lights turn red, we are not stopping. Even a Blues fan like my self wouldn't live in that town - in one week something like 8 people got shot in Rockford - thank gaud my parents moved to Washington State when they were young.

I always have an extra book of matches in the car - then I run the crook over when he picks em up.

The two men wrestled on the ground and during the fight, Miranda accidentally discharged his gun, shooting himself in the ankle, police said.

That was my favorite part of the story, I only wish it had hit his femoral artery instead of just an ankle. If only every armed robbery attempt could end in a similar fashion; a severe beating for the criminal and a self inflicted gun shot wound from the perps own weapon...Priceless.

The only way this could be any more satisfying is if this was going to be the 3rd felony charge for Miranda.

The sad thing is that some lawyer will get hold of the perp and get him to sue the victim because they victims 'hands' were lethal weapons.

ME, any 'perp' who tries to rob someone forfeits ANY right to whine about what the 'victim' does to them.

No. The sad thing is that you actually believe this guy has a case against his victim.

The victim won't be sued and hopefully Mr. Miranda won't see freedom until well into his 40s.

He definitely learned his lesson though... once he's out, he'll only rob the elderly.

If the Attacker did NOT have a gun you might have a point> But he did have a gun! And it was pointed at the victim! The victim had EVERY RIGHT to use deadly force if he felt he needed to.

Sorry no lawsuit here!! I am sure that is breaking all the libs hearts! Poor mugger can't sue!

Harold, it's happened before. Way too many times before. Some one defends them self or another person and then gets sued for fighting back rather than just stand there and be a victim.

I still love this story though. Wish we could hear a follow up about what this thug's buddies are going to do to him. It's sort of poetic that he shot himself in the foot, or near the foot. That pretty much says it all.

Chalk one up for the good guys!

Records show Miranda has several convictions, including at least one for a residential burglary. He was ordered held on $350,000 bond Sunday.

BTW....time to put this guy in prison for 10 years.

Prison? why? It's obvious he has no intentions of "learning his lesson" in prison and will continue to be a threat to society. Kill the guy. Simple. He's putting people's lives in jeopardy. It's not fair to others to just lock him up and in 10 years let it be somebody else's problem. The guy is going to get someone killed. Kill him first!

Oh, good idea. Let's start using the death penalty for robberies. Maybe we can start cutting off hands for shoplifting too? I have an idea Json-7: Why don't you move to Saudi Arabia? I think you might love their Sharia law.

Unfortunately, the mugger will get out of jail someday. And when he tries the next street robbery, he may just shoot first, instead of taking a chance. It's much easier to rob a dead body.

Death isn't an unjust penalty for someone who points a gun at people and threatens them with death IMO.

Arcturus....I have to agree with Joe....this stupid criminal pointed a loaded gun at a guy with the intent of robbing him and possibility of shooting an innocent man. What compassion does he deserve?...

I personally think this crime deserves some creative sentencing. Possibly ten years with the mandate that this low life should have to face his victim in an empty room once a month for the length of his sentence....

I believe in capital punishment. This scumbag attempted murder, period. He had a weapon in his pocket and the intention to rob at gunpoint. I also believe in the death penalty for child molesters, but we still have little bunny-huggers that think these scumbags can be rehabilitated. Wrong.

I do not believe in the death penalty ;because, it is proven innocent people have been put to death.if you get caught with your hand in my cookie jar,you will need a replacement(that goes for heads also). No prisoners. It happens everywhere: From our sheriff's facebook page--On November 29, 2011, at approximately 9:00 pm an Elliotsville Rd. *** resident returned home to find a person exiting from a rear window of the residence. The owner of the residence had a juvenile that was accompanying him call 911 and the resident chased the male into the woods behind the residence. When deputies arrived, the homeowner delivered a 21 yr old male, hog tied and unconscious to deputies. The male perpetrator was transported to *** Hospital to be checked. The perpetrator will be charged with burglary and the case is still under investigation.

Don't you just love it. People are fed up with so much crap. It's time to take back our lives and country.

... and you know that is exactly what will happen with this piece of crap. He'll say he didn't draw a weapon, which he will 'claim' he was carrying for his own protection, (even though he has priors and it's illegal for him to carry a weapon and probably violated some type of parole if he is on parole). Also claim he only asked for a lighter and the guy got out and opened a can of whoop a$$ on him for no reason, and at that point tried to protect himself from 'attack' by trying to get his gun out.

It makes me sick that burglars/robbers and other a$$hats like this, that get shot or beaten up during the CRIME THEY ARE COMMITTING, file law suits!

Glad he got his a$$ kicked! He certainly deserved it. Now, lets see what happens to him in prison!

I don't think this guy would get anything if he did try and sue. His entire criminal history including juvenile offenses would be able to be presented in court to determine his credibility as a witness, as rules in civil cases are different than criminal cases, and the jury would acquit after having a really good laugh at this twit's stupidity. Remember OJ? He was acquitted in criminal trial but found civilly responsible due to different rules of admissibiity of evidence.

I'm betting this twit wouldn't want the publicity while he's in prison anyway, as it would make him look weak and paint a target on himself for the other inmates. He better cuddle up to the biggest baddest guy in the joint if he doesn't want to be passed around at "parties".

Naw...We would have missed his mugged shot and the story is priceless. If that had happened, it would have just been another "someone died tonight" story. As it is, it is heart warming and funny as hell. He did what he needed to do to neutralize the threat--with a few extras thrown in for good measure. One has to be sure that he is neutralized after all. Don't be a buzz kill.

Once getting control of his gun in the struggle, the victim should have just finished off this chronic criminal.

Oh goody, we get to live through all the riots, looting, and pulpit slinging by the black leaders because the guy is black!

When all is said and done this guy will be dressed up like a saint and everyone will be patting themselves on the back for having justice for this thug.

What is your problem? Oh, yeah--bigotry! First off, I don't see any other race-centered comments but yours. Nor have I heard that anyone is rioting or looting on his behalf. So much for your dire prediction--and what a disgusting stereotype you present! Second, where do you get that the guy is black? I suppose, to a racist like you, anything other than "Aryan" lily-white is "black" and therefore scary and dangerous. Putz!

If I had to guess, his name sounds Italian and his looks indicate possible S. European heritage (again--Italian, perhaps). But looks can be deceiving and names give only one thread of a person's background, so it would be idiotic for strangers to assume he is of a particular heritage (and then to start slinging negative stereotypes associated with that heritage).

Why don't you crawl back under your white pointy-headed robes and take a long snooze? If you're napping, that's a few hours in which you won't be able to make an ass of yourself.

Actually, he's not Black, and either way, what difference does it make? You would be the first JERK to bring race into it. Would be funny if the victim is the same race, then what?...

Hard to believe that you 2 brain surgeons can't recognize an Hispanic surname. Just remember, regardless of the race, religion, or ethnicity, a**holes like this guy come in all flavors. Only thing we can say thanks for is that they're stupid enough to occasionally mess with the wrong person! And as far as chopping off people's hands for taking something that doesn't belong to them, all I have to say is: stick your arm in MY front door without an invitation and you won't be able to count past 5 without taking off your shoes from then on.

um...he doesn't look black to me...I think you are just a troll who is trying to start something...AND it doesn't matter if he was black, or purple...(well, parts of him are)...he got what he deserved, and hopefully it teaches him a valuable lesson.

No this guy isn't black though hard to tell color under all that bruising. Same idiots who can't tell difference between hispanic and illegal can't tell hispanic from black. Just your basic bigot trying to start something from nothing.

Actually he looks more blue and purple to me. BTW did you notice that the "victim" at first handed the perp his wallet. It wasn't until the perp asked him to get out of the vehicle that he got his beat down.
