Rev. Daniel Mallette of St. Margaret of Scotland Church was beaten and robbed, police say.
CHICAGO -- A Catholic priest was assaulted during a robbery early Tuesday morning in the rectory of his South Side church, police said.
It happened on the property of St. Margaret of Scotland Church in Longwood Manor, where Cook County Sheriff Tom Dary attends services.
Police said Rev. Daniel Mallette woke up around 12:30 a.m. to find two men standing over him, demanding money. When the 80-year-old priest didn’t move quickly enough, they beat him.
The pair eventually found an undisclosed amount of cash in the rectory and ran off, police said.
The pastor was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn for treatment. He suffered broken ribs and a swollen face in the beating, but a CT scan revealed no serious damage. He was treated and released.
Father Mallette is a pastor emeritus at St. Margaret.
Police are still investigating.
