Sorry. I installed and repaired many burglar alarms in churches and rectorys. I've been in dozens of churches and temples over the years. Even the lowliest little church renting a storefront has gold candlesticks, chalices and other knick-knacks. If a particular church is cash poor, it's becuase they already spent the money that wasn't specifically set aside for charity or such on shiney stuff for thier altars.

I have to disagree. I've been in numerous churches as well - being an active church goer and now Youth Director. None of the churches I have ever been to have candlesticks or chalices made of gold. Then again, I grew up Presbyterian, maybe Presbyterians don't engage in as much conspicuous consumption as other denominations, but I doubt it. I bet most churches spend more money each year on communion bread and wine than they do on golden "knick-knacks" for the altar.

I'd be interested to see your "facts" on how many people have died in religious conflicts vs non-religious conflicts. You have those numbers, right? It's not just your opinion...right? Over 20 million people died in WWI and over 70 million in WWII. How many people were killed in the Crusades? Tens of thousands - quite a large number of unnecessary deaths to be sure, but nothing to hold a candle to conflicts between nations.

Pablo the only reason it is so out front about the misdealings of Catholic Priests (anyone who would misuse their position of trust should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law) is because as someone pointed out earlier the Church is one of the richest organizations in the world and unlike the Protestant Churches the Catholic Churchs are all tied together financially making for big pockets between that and the long standing policy of the Church to deal with any such accusations as quitly as posable even when a Priest says he did not do the things he is accused of makes me wonder,( I am not saying all of them are)how many of the accusations are false.

Ummm... I think if you believe in and follow the Commandments, "Thou shalt not kill" is pretty straight forward and unambiguous. Thou shalt not kill. Period. There is no fine print. There is no asterisk. The law of this country may make the exception for self defense (and you can clearly make an argument for doing so and legally speaking I agree it is good that it does), but the law of god does not. The Commandment does not offer exceptions or caveats. So in that respect, it does say thou shalt not kill in self defense, because it is still killing and therefore against god's law. If you do not believe in or follow god's laws as they are written in the 10 Commandments, that is a perfectly valid choice in my opinion, but the Commandment is quite clear.
