Investigators are trying to determine why a man shot and killed a Virginia Tech campus police officer Thursday before turning the gun on himself. NBC's Pete Williams reports.
The Virginia Tech police officer who was killed on campus during a traffic stop was identified as four-year member of the force who was married and had five children and stepchildren.
The Virginia Tech News website said Deriek W. Crouse, 39, of Christiansburg, was survived by his wife, five children and step-children, and his mother and brother. Funeral arrangements were pending.

Police Officer Deriek Crouse
The site said Crouse joined the campus Police Department on Oct. 27, 2007, and served in the patrol division. He had been a member of the force's Emergency Response Team since February, and in 2008 he received an award for his commitment to the department's efforts against driving under the influence.
He was an Army veteran who had worked at the New River Valley Jail and the Montgomery County Sheriff's Department.
The gunman thought to have killed Crouse was found dead on campus with a gunshot wound.

Guns don't kill people - the winter air, change of season, bad fairies . . . .
I bet he was a Muslim too
A man is dead and 5 children have been left without a father. May he rest in peace and may God comfort his family and friends. This is where the focus should be, not on his what his religion may have been.
Peace.
Well said Missy!
If guns don't kill people, does that mean toasters don't toast toast? Toast toasts toast
Wow, you have a toaster that toasts toast by itself? I'll give you 6 trillion dollars for it. I'll give you 8 trillion if it butters the toast and eats it also.
And a toaster dropped in bath water kills too
Guns don't kill people, toasters kill people!
Actually, toasters toast bread.
I think there's some toasties running around Virginia, my state doesn't murder like this so yes, guns don't kill people toasty people do..
Aubs, if you are going to attempt to make a point at least take a little time to think it out. Now with your nonsensical self toasting toaster analogy you appear to others as an idiot, so any further points you try to make will hold no weight.
No, toasters don't toast bread by themselves, but it's sure a lot easier and quicker to make toast if you've got one. Just takes one quick touch of a trigger. I mean button.
Hey Aubs, you missed one important point during your toaster/gun comparison. The toaster doesn't toast ANYTHING until a PERSON puts toast into it and pushes down! Time to work on those critical thinking skills... or lack thereof.
Lets not forget that Cars kill more people than guns, every year.
Shall we ban those too while we are at it?
http://www.car-accidents.com/pages/fatal-accident-statistics.html
http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/rr5214a2.htm
For those too lazy to look, governemt agencies report about 45,000 vehicle related deaths per year, and about 30,000 gun-related deaths per year.
And lets not also forget that 60% of all gun related deaths are suicide. Meaning you would be trying to ban sleeping pills/ nooses/ razor blades if people never shot themselves.
But of course, nobody will read this, and just scream more about banning guns
Moheeheeko -
Let me first disclose that I am a gun owner. I own both handguns and rifles.
Statistically more people are killed in car-related incidents than are killed by firearms in the US.
However, the primary purpose of an automobile is to convey people (and objects) from one place to another. Whereas, the primary purpose of a firearm is to launch projectiles at a target with deadly force. Cars are constantly being re-designed to be safer to both the passengers within as well as other people without. Firearms are constantly being re-designed to be able to more efficiently transfer ballistic energy to their targets.
I enjoy having the opportunity to (responsibly) own and operate both automobiles and firearms, but I would never deny that a gun facilitates murder much better than a car does.
One cannot reasonably dispute the fact that guns make it far easier to kill than any other commonly available weapon.
However, without guns murder will still happen. People have been killing each other (and themselves) forever, and taking away firearms won't change that. Though it would probably decrease the numbers.
I am personally of a mixed opinion on the right to bear arms in the US. The second amendment's right to bear arms was contextually part of the right to form a militia (a role currently filled by the National Guard), but 200+ years later there's a lot of cultural tradition and precedent for the personal ownership of firearms in the US.
When it comes down to it, I would be more in favor of mandatory, and periodic education and practical training for gun owners, than for a gun ban. I think it is reasonable to require a licensing process, not unlike a drivers license, if you want to own a gun of any type. Such a process won't fix all of the problems, but it may well help prevent some of them.
Tragic.
What was the relationship between the shooter and the officer?
.
None. Read the story.
R. Scalzo, sources please. The question is yet to be answered.
.
Guns don't kill people. There should be at least one gun in the hands of each America, men, women and children. All will fake security.
I heard Eric Holder supplied the gun at the recent serial killer convention. Can that be verified?
i heard glenn beck called for you. wanted his tin foil back.
Enough, please.
Saddest thing I've heard all week. Condolences.
Saddest thing I heard all week was Eric Holder's testimony today
Some people just can't get their head out of their pet peeve...why don't we focus on something that we can all agree on...the tragedy of a father of 5 being killed in the line of duty.
As a son of a father of 5, this really hit home. My condolences to the family of this officer. May your heart find peace.
So, if it was a father of 4, or 6, it wouldn't have meant as much to you??
Troll
Name-calling Hack
You know, this is a significant tragedy that some have to turn into a political statement about gun availability. And what does Eric Holder have to do with anything? We will always have the emotionally ill among us.
Such a tragic and sad thing to happen..may he RIP and family be protected by god.
Hug your loves ones when you leave the house everyday..with the world today it may be your last or theirs to do that!
This was over a traffic stop? This society is really becoming a nightmare. Events like this disprove the theory of evolution because the only thing that has evolved is the rampant disregard for life. Mothers killing their children, serial killers, thrill killers, mass non-sensible rampages, its all omens of a fallen society.
It wasn't even the person who was pulled over who shot the cop. It was totally senseless. The guy was walking around with a gun, sees a cop giving somebody a ticket, and blows him away.
He didn't know the officer or the person who was getting a ticket.
My condolences to his family. Very sad.
Deriek W. Crouse, father of five, husband, gave up his life in the line of duty. May he rest in peace and enter into the Kingdom of Heaven. God bless his soul.
Pepper spray and tasers for the family members . this family lost a father .America lost a 1% Corporate owned anti protestor Nazi cop .........
and if you would have been killed we would have lost nothing.. only gained.
read your bibles - god hates pigs!
The Policeman had 5 kids and step children. May his soul rest in peace. The education and the welfare of the kids must be provided for so that they have a brighter future. GOD BLESS THE USA.

How many major shootings (plus the ones that happen every day) does this country need for us to reconsider our morals and laws? VT, Tucson, Fort Hood, Northern Illinois, Lakewood WA police shooting, and now this, all in the past 5 years (plus ones in Germany and Norway). Let's stand up for the right to live in peace in the Land of the Free.
American-1332269 -
You do realize that the people that would consider heeding your call for peace, or not the same people that are planning an committing homicide by way of firearm, right?
"Excuse me, sir. I see that you are coming towards me with a .44 magnum revolver, and a murderous grin, but would you please consider NOT killing me? It would be wrong of you to shoot me in the face, and I wouldn't want to burden your conscience with my death."
What does standing up for peace actually mean? Are you calling for some sort of public protest that involves refusing to sit down? ...or maybe we should have an ad campaign where we politely inform everyone that it is a bad idea to go on a killing spree.
I am pretty sure that anyone set on engaging in a real-life shoot-em-up already knows that what they are planning to do is socially unacceptable.
Here we go...another rag head killing Americans...throw all these motherFkrs out of the country!!!
My Condolences to the family of the officer.
According to the local newspaper for that town, the shooter came out of nowhere and shot the officer. The person pulled over was not the shooter.
"Virginia Tech identified the slain officer as Derrick Crouse. He was shot after making the traffic stop – by a suspect who was not in the vehicle that was stopped. Questions remain about where the shooter came from and why Crouse was shot."

To those who thinks guns or weapons has anything to do with this, the answer is we should ban human. From the dawn of human history, we have always used violence as a means to solve problems. Whether it was rocks, sticks, swords, or guns. It is all the same. To really solve this problem, we have to take the source out of the picture, humans. No humans, no violence. Period. If you are not willing to entertain that thought, stop blaming weapons or guns.
Lot harder to kill with a rock, stick, or sword. A child can kill with a gun. From a distance. THAT is the issue Einstein. So you needn't go out and destroy the human species.
It is probably best to ban handguns.
No. And don't even try it.
Takenaka, I've seen your comments on other sites. If that's all you can say, knowing that it's not going to happen, then stay off the sites.
Condolences to the family, friends & community for this tragedy. Rest in peace Officer Crouse. May God wrap you in his loving arms. God, please give comfort to the family, friends, community.
If the angry man came at the officer with a stick or a rock - the officer would most likely be alive this morning.
Or he could have still been killed. Rocks and sticks have been used longer then firearms to kill people.
We should probably ban cars too--because they kill people on the roadways every single day at a far higher rate than guns ever will. Also we all should keep our mouth shut as well if we go ahead and ban guns--the same US constitution that allows us to bear arms gives you the right to run your mouths (no matter how ridiculous the nonsense is that spews out)--Take one of those rights away and they all start falling one by one. So to all of you who do not like the constitutional rights that set us apart from the rest of the world, please move away, shut your mouth and please do not return.
Joey, you're just repeating the same, tired nonsense that the gun nuts spew to defend their indefensible positions.
Cars and other things that cause accidental deaths are designed for other useful purposes. Guns are designed to kill from a distance at the touch of a button.
There are a lot of rights that have been taken away from us without starting this mythical domino effect of losing them all. Americans were once legally entitled to buy and use cocaine, or to hire child laborers to work for them, or to drive a car without a license. I think those restrictions have worked to the benefit of the country, and none have started this floodgate of losing fundamental rights.
We are a country run by we, the people, and the only rights we lose are the ones we agree we won't miss. That jack-booted thug trying to take your guns and your rights only exists in the fearful delusions of the NRA.
No humans, no violence? I take it you've never watched the Discovery Channel and witnessed a lion tearing apart a zebra or gazelle? I have news for you... all living things are capable of violence.
If you want to ban guns then you need a constitutional amendment to do so, as they did with prohibition (that one worked out real well, didn't it?). It will take 2/3rds of the states to ratify that to make it law. Because of the the constitution lawmakers can not arbitrarily make guns illegal. That being said, if you allow just one of your rights to be taken away then where does it stop? There is no stopping point. The government will see the populace as sheep and take all rights away. I for one do not and will not own a gun of any kind, and yes, I am former military. But I will not accept the taking away of any right that is guaranteed by the constitution and the Bill of Rights. Our forefathers may never have envisioned automatic weapons, but they did understand that the populace has a right and a duty to protect themselves from a tyrannical government. We do have certain rights that have been given to us that we must defend or lose them. And the argument that if all the guns were taken away that this would not happen is just a joke. If a criminal wants a weapon he/she will get one. If you outlaw guns then it will just be another item that will be smuggled into the country, just as drugs and and illegal aliens are. If you think taking guns away is a sane thing to do then you are seriously mistaken. I have friends that use rifles, shotguns and other assorted weapons to put food on the table.
I may not believe in what you say, but I WILL defend to the death your right to say it. That is another right we have under the constitution!!!!!!!!!!!!!
if someone wants to kill--they will kill...point blank. believe it or not--most gun owners are peaceful and we enjoy the recreation of the sport of shooting...and if we wanna bring up the NRA--they (and when I say they, i mean WE since i am a proud member) are currently kicking your (and every other anti-gun extremist) @55 at keeping guns legal...end of story--thanks
It's a tough story in any case, but if he had 5 children....well?
He knew the risks when he took the job. It's not smart or responsible to have children while being a cop without a desk job. I'm sure the kids will be very well taken care of.
Do you say the same thing about firefighters and military personal. The fact is that anyone can be killed at any time, by various means. You could have a desk job and get in a car accident and die, or have a heart attack while sitting at your desk.
Grunt, you are so right, my father was an insurance adjuster and a man came walking in the office and shot my father over a bad outcome in his claim. If he had come in with a stick my dad would have beat the $hit out him.
Yes, he knew the risks of taking his job. These officers Service and Protect your sorry butt on a daily basis and, God (or the superior being of your choice) willing, go home every day to their families.
"It's not smart or responsible to have children while being a cop without a desk job."
The majority of police officers don't have desk jobs. Should all the police have vesectomies and tubal ligations?
I am proudly married to a police officer with children.
About that, sorry on your loss.
Isn't anyone a little disturbed that the picture on a related article showed the cops in camouflage? The police are not supposed to be the military, they are supposed to serve their community, not occupy and attack it. THat uniform definitely sends the wrong message.
Those cops are SWAT. They get called in when really bad things happen. What uniform would you have them wear, bright yellow?
Right, and are they running through the woods? No, so camouflage wouldn't be very helpful. Why don't they wear the same clothing that all other swat officers wear?
You are totally clueless. You think they have a uniform for "every occasion". Camos work well and stand up to abuse. That the hell do yoyu care what pattern they wear? Military don't even wear camo and haven't for some time.
What the hell's wrong with people?
The simple answer is they're.... people. Some are good and some are bad. The unfortunate thing is it's always the bad that get the "publicity". Good news doesn't sell or get ratings, bad news does.
so very sorry for the family, may god bless and help you through this heart breaking time.
Merry Christmas Kids.......your father was killed by a shoddy interpretation of the second amendment.......
Yes, because our Founding Fathers specifically stated that the law abiding citizens cannot defend themselves with guns and must use meat cleavers, butter knives and dirty looks instead. Gotcha.
Dry up, please.
My heart and thoughts go out to the Police Officer and his family.
You may not agree with the 2nd amendment, but the least you could do is respect it. I don't particularly care for the SCOTUS' decision that the 1st amendment protects Philips right to protest military funerals, or that because of the 1st amendment people are free to make snide comments about our military, fire and police who risk their lives so we can be safe, but I respect it.
i wish i could live to see my fellow americans loveing and careing for each other just like it was when i was growing up long ago .but i fear thats just my fanticy,a dream i have with every breath i try to take .i know the pain of loosesing most of my love ones.god bless america again.just my feelings
Did you grow up in a cave?
when a child grows up in a loving home, and doesn't know about the neighbor's adulteries, the violence down the street, the child molester next door molesting his own children, we believe the world is a safe place. fact is, these kinds of things have been going on for centuries and eons. We just didn't know it. My Mom protected me from these kinds of stories and events around me. I found when out in the real world as an adult that these things happen around everyone. Just be blessed that you were protected and lived a good childhood. However, these things were happening around you, but your parents protected you. People have been the same forever. Its just 24 hour TV and the internet that makes us thinks its more than before.
