Police officer takes wrong turn, drives car up utility pole

A Miami police offer took a wrong turn and drove his car up a utility pole Tuesday morning.

MIAMI -- A Miami Police officer wasn't injured, but his car may need a little work after he drove it up a utility pole in a single car accident Tuesday morning.

Miami Police said the officer was briefly distracted and ran over a wire on the pole, leaving his patrol car at a 45-degree angle. Rescue workers responded and helped the officer hop out of the car uninjured.

The incident is just the latest Keystone Kops-like episode for South Florida police.

  • Last week, an off-duty cop was discovered passed out and drunk in his patrol car, the Miami-Dade, Fla., police department told local media. Instead of being cuffed and booked, Fernando Villa, 32, was allowed to go home after signing a form promising he would appear in court, the Miami Herald reported.
  • A feud between Miami Police and the Florida Highway Patrol culminated in one trooper getting his patrol car smeared with human feces.
  • A Florida police officer allegedly shot at a fellow cop in November before driving off and ordering pizza.
  • In July, Miami Beach cop Derick Kuilan nearly killed two people after allegedly plowing into them on his police ATV while taking a woman for a boozy late-night joyride, according to the Miami Times. He was fired and is awaiting trial on reckless driving and DUI charges.

No .... the pole was charged with "Obstructing a Law Enforcement Officer" ..

The "pole" .. has already obtained counsel .... and is seeking damages for assault .. this may be a test case in Florida ....

They attached the wrong photo to the article. The photo has a cop car up a guy wire to the pole bu is not on the pole at all.

On the plus side, this is a great opportunity for the officer to change the oil and rotate the tires on his cruiser. Everything's easy to reach.

Those guy wires on poles can be tricky.

They might want to ease off on some of the in-car distractions. Besides watching for traffic violations, BOLOs for cars or persons (who could be walking or in vehicles), suspicious persons or activities, etc. they also have to contend with the two-way radio, computer, cell phones (official and personal), and maybe a navigation device and automatic license plate scanner. You have to be a clever multi-tasker to cover all those bases as a passenger, let alone driver.

They need a Chief, simple as that. Someone fostered an atmosphere where officers felt this kind of behavior would be tolerated or overlooked. I guarantee, when I was a policeman, our Chief made it perfectly clear what would and would not be tolerated and, if you screwed the pooch, he made an example out of your a$$ right quick. Policemen can sometimes be like children, if you drop the hammer on them for the small stuff, they don't even consider pulling the big stuff. I guess it's the difference between having a real Chief that you respect and one that's just ROD (Retired on duty) whose just bidding his or her time to pad their retirement.

This type of lawlessness and corruption exists in all states that are predominantly republican. It has to do with a lack of education and respect for this country's laws. Make an example of these un-American tools.

That should be the motto for everyone Aaron, good practical advice. It's time people stopped thinking with their political parties instead of their own brain as well. Everything a political party does isn't right or wrong and a lot of it is just opinion anyway. I would never blindly vote for someone just because they were of a particular political party. I lived in FL for years and a lot of crazy stuff happened there, but I also lived in SC, RI and MI and have had an equal amount of silliness in all places. You will find crazy people everywhere and whether the state is run by D or R doesn't make a difference.

This is all typical of florida law enforcement - it seems like all the cops are over-worked and under-educated. Corruption, bigotry, racism, chauvinism - they're all prerequisits for florida lawmen. The beaches are great - everywhere else is a cesspool. It sucks here.

That means he drove off the road. Driving while distracted is the cause of most accidents. You can't text, dial, search for the donuts and drink coffee while driving and not expect something like this to happen.
