Chick-fil-A cashier fired for racist receipts mocking Asians

cakeninjak.tumblr.com

Chick-fil-A is apologizing for the “unthinking behavior” of an employee at a Southern California location who issued receipts labeled "Ching" and "Chong" to two customers of Asian descent.

The Georgia-based fast-food chicken restaurant chain says the employee was immediately fired after the customers complained to management.

"Honestly, it was just a young person doing something stupid," company spokesman Jerry Johnston told msnbc.com on Wednesday.

Two Asian-American students at University of California, Irvine, who ordered meals at a Chick-fil-A in Irvine said the cashier who took their order didn’t ask for their names. Instead, she typed “Ching” and “Chong,” respectively, on their receipts, according to Kelvin Lee, another UC Irvine student who said he is a friend of the customers. Lee posted a photo of the receipts on his Tumblr account.

In a statement published on Grub Street Los Angeles, the company said the manager quickly dealt with the complaint by firing the employee.

Here is the company’s statement:

Please understand and accept our confirmation that the inappropriate, and unthinking behavior of a young team member at one of our restaurants does not support any claim or even suggestion of racism at our restaurant. The individual clearly violated our operating standards; the matter was addressed and discussed immediately with the guests on the spot; and a confirmation was provided that the employee was immediately dismissed for the individual behavior.

Our Chick-fil-A restaurant Operators and their employees try very hard every day to actually go the extra mile in serving ALL of our customers with honor, dignity and respect. The circumstances here are a simply case of immaturity, failed judgment, and human error….it has nothing to do with the service and operational standards of our Chick-fil-A restaurants which are consistently rated at the highest level of service in the foodservice industry.”

Johnston said the incident is in no way a reflection of Chick-fil-A's views or valuies.

"Someone had a definite lack of judgment and did something very silly, very stupid. We immediately acted on it and took action," he said.

So a little racism is "unthinkable" but being a homophobe is ok?

People can't choose what race they are but they CAN choose who they have sex with. One is the way you're born and the other is the action you commit. Why are you so ignorant?

Sorry, Kyle, but if you believe people choose to be gay, you're the ignorant one. The "action [they] commit" is an expression of a natural attraction. Just because you're misinformed, a religious nut and/or just willfully ignorant, doesn't mean folks who actually think should live their lives based on your lack of knowledge. It's almost 2012 - it's time for people to grow-up on the entire gay issue.

Kyle, I think you need to be asking yourself that question about ignorance.

No, people can't choose their sexual orientation, just like they can't choose their race. They are BOTH the way you're born. I am heterosexual and never had to choose, I never made a conscious choice about who I wanted to be with. I was born with the feelings and desires I have. The same is true for every human being on earth...including you.

Yes Chik-fi-a has a long history of giving to homophobic causes. I stopped going there when I found out. For those who think it's okay, what would you do if a company systematically worked against black or jews?

So, Kyle, let's think things through here. If you believe that

A. Sexuality is a choice

Then it logically concludes that everyone is

B. Bisexual in nature

Therefore

C. You, yourself, Kyle, are bisexual and are only choosing to act on the heterosexual impulses you have and not the homosexual ones, correct?

See how that works, Kyle?

Chick Fil A makes good sandwiches, but they are a bunch of ignorant bigots who only hire "Christians". News flash idiots: Sunday ain't the sabbath. You're breaking it by being open on Saturday. @John Brown...

I was willing to ignore all the Pro-Gay comments until I ran across your proclamation that "They are made that way by God." How totally ludicrus! Here's the Word of God on the subject:

"If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them." Leviticus 20:13

Now some might argue "Well, that was the Old Testament." "Things are different in the New Testament."

Read Romans 1:24-28, and please refrain from blaming homosexuality on God.

But what if, just for the sake of argument, Kyle is right, and sexuality is a choice (I don't believe that for a minute, just musing about the possibility). We live in a free country where people are allowed, even protected by law, to make their own choices about what works best in their lives. We all have the freedom of choice to decide where we want to live, where we want to work, where we want to worship, what kind of car we want to drive, what we want to have for dinner, and who we want to have relationships with. If two CONSENTING ADULTS (I highlighted that because some idiot will try to twist my words to include children and animals) no matter their gender want to have a close, intimate relationship, that is their choice to make. What people do behind closed doors is really nobody's business. Why do we keep trying to make it so?

For Shipup Mom, I thought I would help you clarify why it is ok for two consenting adults of the same sex to be together, and how that doesn't automatically include animals and children. I hope the link posts, otherwise, ignore this message entirely.

It does not matter whether you believe that sexual preference is a choice or something you are born with. Religion is a choice, but you can not discriminate based on religion.

What is the point of discrimination? Does it make you fell better to put others down? It all seems to start with people that will not take responsibility for their own behavior, and need to blame someone else. Yet as long as they blame others, they can never fix whatever is bothering them.

The Germans found that burning Jews did not fix their society in the 1940s. Digging deeper (with some encouragement from the US and others), they found the changes they needed, and now live with Jews and people of other religions and races.

sexual preference is an illusion created by the media. generally homosexuality occurs in nature when the society is out of order, mostly overpopulation in studies with rats. i think that people who want to put their genitals somewhere that feces is involved is surely a sign of sickness. love can be expressed in many ways besides sexuality. and i think a relationship based on sexual preference or attraction is not in reality a relationship.

I find it funny that atmnettech is certain his god is THE god. Maybe his god is make-believe, and the real god (or possibly a flying spaghetti monster) created gays as they are.

Also, yes people can choose whom they sleep with. But they cannot choose to whom they are attracted. That's the issue here. You don't really have a problem with the sex. A person can announce themselves as gay, march in the parade, get married to a person of the same sex, and adopt, all the while remaining a virgin. That person would still be gay, and I'm certain people like atmnettech and Kyle would still have a problem with him.

So, yes, it's about attraction and identity, things that are not choices.

LOL! You all fail. First off, bashing a religion is the exact same as bashing homosexuals. Now, having said that, the belief of a Christian is that practicing homosexual relations is a sin just like anything else that every human being commits. So, we are ALL on the same exact level no matter what we do. Those who bash homosexuality are what you call over zealous, just like these terrorists(which is kind of not on the same level as bashing a belief) who kill because their religion says so. And we cannot say whether homosexuality is a choice or a genetic phenomena or just purely that you are completely born that way because everyone is different. But bashing either one is unneeded and wrong. Having said that, this was an article about a dumb teenager who made an idiotic choice and has nothing to do with either of those subjects. So all of you who jumped all over a homosexual comment or religious comment are not owed anything, so stop acting like you were wronged. EVERYONE bashes everyone else who does not think the way they do. Christians might bash a homosexual, an atheist might bash a christian, and a over zealous middle eastern will bash every single one of us and hopes that we die(and notice i said an over zealous middle eastern, this is not aimed at the general population there who are made up of normal, average citizens just like me), so grow up.

- I didn't say anything.

Exactly. If someone asks you
if you're a pole smoker,

you just deny it, straight off.
No pause, no farting around.

Rex, I'm not gay.

- Dad thinks you're gay.
- What?

- You're breaking the old man's heart.
- No, I'm not. I told him I'm not.

Ian you're 18,
and you've never had a girlfriend.

That's how people wind up getting gay,
you know.

One of my fav's for those who love to quote scripture:

Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination ... End ofdebate. I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some otherelements of God's Laws and how to follow them.1. Leviticus 25:44 states that I may possess slaves, both male andfemale, provided they are from neighboring nations. A friend of mineclaims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can youclarify? Why can't I own Canadians?2. I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned inExodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fairprice for her?3. I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in herperiod of Menstrual uncleanliness - Lev.15: 19-24. The problem is howdo I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.4. When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates apleasing odor for the Lord - Lev.1:9. The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?5. I have a neighbour who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligatedto kill him myself, or should I ask the police to do it?6. A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is anabomination, Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination thanhomosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this? Are there'degrees' of abomination?7. Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if Ihave a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear readingglasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle roomhere?8. Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hairaround their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev.19:27. How should they die?9. I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makesme unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?10. My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev.19:19 by planting twodifferent crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garmentsmade of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He alsotends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we goto all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them?Lev.24:10-16. Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private familyaffair, like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)I know you have studied these things extensively and thus enjoyconsiderable expertise in such matters, so I'm confident you can help.Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging.

Please stop quoting scriptures guys...keep it to yourself. I am a Christian and shoving it down peoples throats is unneeded. The bible says to go out and preach the word, but that doesn't stand up in front of everyone and throw quotes at them. Be considerate and learn how to get the word out. And also, anyone bashing the bible by saying it is false or whatever, you are wrong. Whether you believe the spiritual or religious part of it is your choice, but the physical, human events DID happen. They are written down in history by that times most prolific people, the most intelligent men of that time and also by normal citizens. Whether you believe Jesus is God's son or just a normal man spread lies is your choice, but the man did exist.

Varuca Salt,

Bisexuality by definition means you are attracted to both genders. Therefore, you cannot preclude Kyle is attracted to both genders meerly by his statement "[People] CAN choose who they have sex with". That statement is true unless you can prove that both homo and heterosexuals have no choice in who they have sex with. Good luck with that.

    #1.43 - Wed Dec 14, 2011 5:33 PM EST

I can't exactly see the correlation between sexuality and racism but then again, I've seen articles touching upon a subject as seemingly harmless as "flowers are pretty" devolve into a political/religious war of words. In spite of this, I thought it prudent to weigh in on the conversation to possibly, and hopefully, clear up a misunderstanding. Nowadays, we utilize two seperate terms regarding an individual's sexuality: sexual orientation and sexual preference. The former is in fact (according to supposed experts on the matter) a trait that a person is born with. It is little more than a genetic factor if you will that dictates what gender a particular person is naturally sexually attracted to. This can be any of homosexual (same sex), heterosexual (opposite sex), bisexual (both same and opposite sex) and my personal favorite (as it applies to me) asexual or nonsexual (neither the same or opposite sex). The latter, sexual preference, is self-explanatory. At least I should hope that it would be anyways.

Yes, this explanation doesn't take into account those individuals who suddenly up and decide that they are gay. They were either born gay and simply spared no effort to suppress those thoughts/feelings/urges (most likely due to inevitable homophobic oppression) or they're simply pretending or whatever have you for whatever reason they may have.

ok this thread has gotten out of hand all the militants on either side of the "gay issue" are out in force....and none of you know what the heck you are talking about

1, people dont choose to be gay or str8...but people can choose who they have sex with...whether or not that choice is moral is dependant on the individual making that choice and thier beliefs.

2, people are not "born gay"...it developes over time and is a combination of many factors that include but are not limited to biological environmental and sociological factors...and each persons sexual development is highly likely to be a unique combination of these factors.

3, homophobics are not any more inclined to be latent homosexuals than anyone else,...any reaserch that suggests this is true does not meet the standard for empierism.

4, bigotry, is generally not a phobia and is present in all sexual orientations including homosexuals....if a homosexual is called "hetero-phobic" are they secretly heterosexual?....likely not,....and the opposite is likely not true,...phobias and bigotry against homosexuals and heterosexuals exist on both sides regardless of the media attention one version might get over the other.

I guess since you make your moniker "I'm gay" - that absolves you from being polite? The article is, techically, about how Chick-fila handled a controversial issue involving race. Their reaction is not in line with their support of another controversial subject - anti-gay groups.

Therefore, the discussion of homosexuality came up in relation to that.

BTW, the bible also gives instructions on the proper rules/guidelines for beating one's slave while were quoting it. The levels of people's religious delusions are truly f$#$ing mind-boggling lol.

Hi, let me call myself a Christian and then quote the old testament.....right...awesome...great job..hey guess what, you aren't a christian. to sum up three key things in being a Christan, love respect and responsibility, oddly enough the same thing that should define an adult, but in this day and age seems to lack from all respects. Damning anyone and their behavior means you are the one who is casting the first stone and think you are "GOD", so grow up and know you aren't. Love isn't about Condemning, its about compassion.

Can't we all just be rice and get along? Oops, I meant nice. So solly. Oops, I meant sorry. Dang this is hard.

Seriously, why is it a comedian (I'm not claiming to be one) can get away with much more? I understand the company having to fire the person - can't have the company reputation dragged through the dirt and all, but honestly, what did that fix for the people who complained? Nothing. They are still stuck with their insecurities. They could have said something to the cashier directly and made the same point and gave her a chance to apologize. If she didn't hate Asians before, I bet she does now. The foment the divisiveness they claim they don't want to exist. Boo on them.

The book says it's a sin. It also says eating pork, shrimp, clams, lobster are sins. It also has a story about a talking mule. It also has the rules for who may be held as slaves and selling your daughter. The bible traces Abraham's birth to about 1800 BC. He was said to be the tenth generation of Adam and lived to 175 years old. So if they all lived about as long the earth was created less than 4000 years ago. The bible also says Noah was commanded by God to gather two of every animal. Where did he get the panda, Koala, grizzly, Kangaroo, Toucan, Polar Bear, rattlesnake, and artic hare?

Why is it that people who back freedom of choice and to keep what happens behind closed doors to remain there, yet always mention only 2 adults can get married. Why is it always limited to 2? Why can't it be 3 or 4 people married to eachother? That itself is against the law now. Isn't that prejudiced?

Playing catch-up means a lot more of these wave-of-suspension posts. 1's actually kind of on-topic - it's about Chick-Fil-A's company policies - but the scope expanded pretty quick. That's all right, but the numerous violations of the first rule on the site aren't.

      Why are you so ignorant?

Kyleortonsarm, if you want to comment once on every article, that's fine, but keep the #1 violations out of it. You're suspended for a week for violating #1 of the Code of Honor.

And, those who are most vehement and homophobic tend to be latent homosexuals. Right, Pauleky?Quit thinking about homosexuals so much, Pauleky. It means you're gay!

Nor can people choose their intelligence or overall perceptions. Kyle is deformed not by his own choosing but by the milieu in which he developed and his native ability to see beyond whatever limitations that milieu imposes on its constituents, the milieu being, of course, the constituents themselves. He has no choice but to perceive what he perceives. There is no magic bullet of light that suddenly transforms a person nor does a person have the ability to choose what they are not aware of. Our job is to try to be sure that our own perceptions are clear enough that we can help people who come out of what we perceive to be crippled milieus. That is, the 'enlightened', whoever they may be, must become missionaries of a sort to the 'unenlightened'. Figuring out which is which and who is who has been mankind's problem since mankind emerged from its precursors. With that said, we must wonder why homogender partnerships which have been broadly accepted in many of our own precedent societies, is so deprecated in our own milieu and so often by people who themselves are most attracted to their own gender. I've never seen this addressed but it is the root of Kyle's perception and should be the target of anyone who would seek to bring a tad more 'reality' into our collective perception. Targeting the perception itself is much less efficient than curing the cause of the implantation of such a perception, I would think.

It's the one thing that is free and should be used by everyone to maybe just brighten someones day. I don't care what someones skin color is they are still humans with feelings and should be treated decently. Just a little smile can sometimes make the difference in someones day, some of you should try it sometime. Hope everyone has a Merry Christmas!

Here Think About This. Everybody is brainwashed the day they are born about any type of religion thier families are in and always will be there after. It was just a way for some old chief to keep control of his people in his villiage (IT WAS THE FIRST KIND OF LAW INFORCEMENT)(ALSO IT WAS A WAY TO MAKE LOADS OF MONEY OFF OF YOUR FELLOW MAN Later on in the years when money came about)(So that this single man could be the center of attiention of a large group and be treated like a king) Which religion has really grow out of control. Because one villiage GOD was better then the others so theres always going to be fighting and blood shed. and it will never END. Now I know your sitting there and getting mad about what I'm writing. But when you die and you find out that since you listen to the word of MAN written by MAN and Brainwashed by MAN that there is no such thing of this god or gods you worship what are you going to think then.Like how much time you wasted your life on when you could of been spending it with family and friends.(I know your sitting there thinking my god is a real god. My question to you is how do you know because of what some man wrote down in a book and you where told to keep the faith its just a way to make more money off of you.) Enough of that subject. Now to all of you non gay men out there who think that thier better then a gay guy think about this. When your poken your women where it should be exit only. Whats the difference it all feels the same. If you don't believe me thier both made the same way inside and out just theres a difference on whats near it. And you justify yourself by telling yourself its a women not a man. I wonder how many people are blowing thier tops right now. The Truth hurts don't it but I bet your saying to yourself that i have no idea what i'm talking about. Thats your brainwashing speaking to you (The Truth Will Always Be A Lie To A Brainwashed Person). To the so called gay women your really bi if you where truely gay you would not have that double ended toy you know what i mean. I could go on about this subject but i'm not you get the picture. If people would just stop and open thier minds and just think about thier actions on how they treat people, animals or anything around them and then ask themselves. Would I do that to myself before you acted, reacted. You know the world would be such a better place. But this will never happen. ALMOST EVERONE THINKS ITS FUNNY TO SEE OTHERS IN PAIN some people even feed on it others do it to be the popular one. Now back to this story I think they should of punished this person not fired. Fireing this person didn't effect this person in any way probably already has another job. A 2 week suspension with no pay would of SPANKED this so called adult would of hurt them where it counts in the pocket. Would make them think twice about how to treat others around them.(to the people you don't believe in spanking(not beating there is a difference) Do you rememeber all the praiseing you got or the spanking you recieve for doing something wrong. Think About it. If I offened anyone sorry if the truth hurts but I can't control the brainwashing only you can.

If Chick-fil-A is homophobic that makes you Christianphobic and in the same category exactly. We never encountered racism in China, but, mostly because we were in a hutong neighborhood in Beijing, we were started and pointed at...A LOT. At first, it was very uncomfortable, but once we started getting to know the people in the neighborhood, we realized that the people were just curious about us and our culture, just as we were of them! I can tell you, though, that if I was uncomfortable at first just based on stares that I can't imagine how I would have felt as a victim of racism. This ignorance needs to end NOW, but sadly, it won't if people like the ones I grew up with in my hometown continue to teach their children the offensive ideal that stereotypes and racism is acceptable.

Like anyone doesn't know that Chik Fil's policy did not state to stereotype names on receipts? Someone lost a job over something that was actually kind of funny. Sorry that life is over for you because someone filled you name in wrong on a reciept. Maybe you should've done what I would've done...looked at the receipt and then looked at the cahier and said "excuse me but that is not my name and I don't find it humourous either" instead of being all passive aggresive and going to management. LOL... last year I went to a Dominoe's Pizza and placed and paid for my order. I then went to the grocery store next door to grab a few things while waiting for the pizza. While I was in the grocery store, I realized the guy at the counter didn't get my name, so I was prepared to tell them what I had ordered when I went back to pick it up. I walked in and they took one look at me and handed me my pizza. I looked at the box and started laughing. Under name was "Pinky".... I had on a bright pink shirt. The girl said the manager, who took my order, realized his error and told them that Pizza went to the lady in the pink shirt. I thought that was good thinking on his part.

But, I still think what the cashier did in this article was offensive.

Unfortunately I think the two are racist Asains who simply made a scene. If these two are so thin skinned go live in their home country and this will never happen again. Thank you MSN for making such an insignificant event a big story.

damn when are people gonna stop being overly sensitive. I'm asian. and it's basically true that asians can't drive. Go on Utube and look for asian drivers. Most often, it's their kids who make fun of the parents. Watch Margaret Cho. She makes fun of asians too.

Stereotypes are a slice of life. They are based on truth. When the stereotypes of different races are being made fun of, it's often not meant to be offensive, but as a light hearted way to show each of our weaknesses. There's a filipino comic (Rex Navarette) who makes fun of the filipino accent. Funnny as hell. There's a filipina girl (she shoes by "happy slip) on U tube), also very funny about how she makes fun of the accent. I remember in school, people(from different ethnic backgrounds) called Filipino's "flips", Japanese (japs/nips), Jews, Polacks, etc. Why is it we didn't get offended back then. and oh yes, non blacks used the "N" word. None of that was considered disrespectful.

People, stop being overly sensitive. Like "pinky" above said, it worked for her. She could have been offended as "pinky" could refer to someone from the old communist regimes, but she wasn't. She took it in stride, smiled and got her pizza.

Of course we could all just call each other sir/maam/dumbass or whatever. By the way, "Maam" can always be offensive. It's short for Madame. as in a woman who runs a brothel.

btw: how come the Asian/American customers who got the receipts weren't interviewed?

LOL, I would die laughing if this happened to me. Its pretty obvious this person was trying to be funny and not racist since they gave "ching and chong" the receipts before they left. Some people need to lighten up. The whole crying racism thing in this country is a freakin joke because we all know every ethnic group does the same thing to the others.

My husband is a cowboy. If someone put "Redneck" on his receipt, he would laugh his @ss off. If a black put "Cracker" on our receipts, we would both laugh. I went to Atlanta a few years ago and the desk clerk said, well high there butter beans. My friend and I laughed--but I had to ask her what a butter bean was. She was joking with us. When my husband and I went to Europe, he was met with stares and children would come up and ask him if he was a "real caballero". He said he thought so. People get upset over the most trivial of things these days. Not necessary. Life's too short for that kind of cr@p.

        This thread is sickening.

Nicodemus, SoAP: We're Americans. We talk about American Exceptionalism, but cry foul when we're held to a higher standard. think about that before you post something about how people in China are racist. We're not in China, we're Americans and we claim to be better. Time to live up to it.

To others (such as Ezra), just because YOU'RE not offended if someone says something racist to you (And from reading the thread, the majority of you who give little anecdotes about how if someone called you Redneck, you'd laugh - you're probably white and this is directed at you) doesn't mean a damn thing. You white people haven't had to deal with racism on a historical level, you've always had it good.

Speaking as an Asian American (half Korean, half European white), I've had to deal with "Ching Chong" jokes growing up. It's irritating, and as a child it DOES make you feel bad about yourself. As a mid-30's adult now, if someone did that to me, yes I'd be offended, and yes I'd speak with the Manager about it. People in this thread are saying the patrons should have just worked it out with the employee? Is that a joke? Are you serious? Do you think that guy gives a crap what these two people thought? Obviously not, otherwise he wouldn't have labeled their receipts as he did. They were absolutely in the right and spoke to Management, who then acted accordingly (and bravo to the venue for their handling of the situation). That cashier is a reflection on the company he works for, whether he's making 8$ an hour or 50$. He should have absolutely been fired.

To Ga31: there's a difference between how you act with your friends (I get jokes about not being able to drive, people come to me with math questions, ask me to show them kung fu, etc...) but it's different if it's someone you have some type of relationship with (in this case, people I work with) as opposed to someone random off the street. In addition, the source of "Ma'am" is indeed Madam, but Madam (when Ma'am was created) was a term for a married woman or (later) royalty. Facts are what they are, don't twist them to mean something they don't because it fits your argument.

To Tom: Yes, it is racist. It's offensive. It's not just names, but even if it was, that's like calling random black people "Tyrone". "Ching Chong" is a racist term, similar to "Ni**er". It isn't just two random names. Go Wiki "Ching Chong" and read the link. From Wiki (The first line:

Ching chong is a pejorative term sometimes employed by speakers of the English language to mock people of Chinese ancestry, or other Asians who may look Chinese.

Several public commentators have characterized the term as derogatory while noting that assaults or physical intimidation of Asians are often accompanied by racial slurs or imitation Chinese)

There's a difference between reading to much into something and screaming "Racism!" and racism actually slapping you in the face. I think, all-in-all, America has gotten a little too Politically Correct myself, but this is NOT one of those times. This isn't a poster for some camp that's showing all white people, and a minority going "THat's Racist!" - This was blatant, in your face racism, which is why the guy was fired and should have been.

People bitch about how Obama trivialized American Exceptionalism, but a thread like this one proves exactly why we really aren't. You want to be exceptional? Then be exceptional and raise the standards you're judged by.

        @Ed2990755

Ed, believe it or not, being half white, you would have received less "ribbing" from friends and non friends alike. I was the kid who was "fresh off the boat". Wore black socks to school because we couldn't afford athletic socks. I still don't have any recollection of any racial bias from people I dealt with. Have you ever thought that maybe...just maybe...you are thin skinned and bruise easily?

and by the way, when I was in school, not all who called me a "flip" was necessarily a friend, but I could tell it wasn't a racial thing. I have been called other things. Yes, "Chink" is one of the names I've been called.

Since you are in your mid 30's, I'm sure you've been called a lot worse than "Ching/Chong". personally, I prefer the ethnic name calling as opposed to names such as Mother*****, A**h*** etc.

At least the ethnic name calling is partially true.(the other name calling is likely partially true to, but it's a lot more offensive than the ethnic name calling, besides, it's okay to call me a "flip" cuz I am one).

How would you have survived a your childhood if you grew up in the 1960's and 1970's before this country became hyper sensitive?

I wonder if white people get upset with all the names they get called. Naw. probably not. and the cashier... I do'nt think he/she should have been fired. This was a teachable moment. If he/she does something like it again (after the teaching moment) then he/she should be fired.

@G3a1: I disagree, there's quite a good chance (being mixed) that I received more ribbing from friends and non-friends.

I might be thin skinned and bruise easily? Well, I quite disagree with that, but playing the Advocate here. So what if I was? Does that make my feelings any less valid?

After doing some spot research, "Ching Chong" is a term roughly on par with Ni**er. So you're telling me that a Black guy/girl shouldn't speak with a Manager if that was written on their receipt? Do you really believe this?

You're comparing ethnic name calling to flat out curse words - Would you complain to a Manager if you saw those curse words on your receipt? If next to the GUEST: line, it read "A**h**e"? Somehow, I doubt that. In addition, it's easy to make the argument that racial name calling is worse, as it's over something that someone can't control, nor is a point of view because of the actions of some person. "A**h***" is a term probably often use for someone who's conducting themselves as such. Or because of intense anger. Racial slurs are, and this is important, KNOWN derogatory terms for a persons race, over which they have NO control. There are enough negative connotations around those terms that the original meaning of the word has no more relevance, all that's relevant is the negative connotations of those words.

How would I have survived in the 60's and 70's? I don't know, I wasn't there. That being said, I can make the safe assumption that because the terms were more commonplace then, they were more accepted and carried less weight. Similar to the way terms like "A**h***" and MFer, etc... carry less weight now. Because of frequency of use. There was PLENTY of justification back then to say "I didn't know it was a racist term" because there were large groups of people, cities, villages, states, etc... where terms like "Ni**er" were just terms for Blacks. Now it's a known sign of ignorance and racism. The fact that a teenager is using the term is.. regrettable to say the least, and the company was 100% correct in firing him.

Do you REALLY think that was a "Well, maybe you didn't know, but you're NOT supposed to call people that!" moment? I mean, you have to assume the person is at least 15-16 years of age. Do you really think by that age, people don't know those terms are racist? Do you really think that She just came up with those terms at random, COMPLETELY ignorant of the fact that they're racist terms? Do you really think she needs a teachable moment from her boss at Chik-Fil-A to have that light come on? If so, then I pity America. Kids shouldn't be coddled - The girl knew very well it was a racist term and that's why it was put on there. If she didn't know it was racist, she wouldn't have put the words on there in the first place.

You call me one of those thin-skinned-bruise-easily people. I call anyone who calls writing racist terms on receipts at your job TO HAND TO CUSTOMERS a "Teachable moment" isn't thinking the whole thing through all the way.

And besides all of the above, getting canned from a Fast Food joint is a good lesson. It's not life impacting (Who lists their fast food experience during their teenage years on their resume?) - It's a McJob and there are plenty more with no experience or training required. 5 years down the road, it'll be a distant memory for the girl. But it'll be more impacting then the Manager or Customers telling her "You shouldn't say that, it's wrong".

PS: The "teachable moment" or Warning had already come during Employee Orientation where they make you watch those stupid Racism/Sexual Harrassment/whatever videos. When I was a teen and had to watch them, I always felt like I was being treated like a moron. I'm smarter then this. America's smarter then this. Do we REALLY need a video explaining not to use racist terms?

Well, apparently we do, and apparently there are those of us who think that, not only do we need the video, we need an additional warning just in case the video + a life of learning wasn't enough to already teach someone not to use racist terms.

Er, and lastly - The racial name calling in this instance wasn't "partially true" unless their names were actually Ching and Chong. They either are or aren't. No shades of grey.

Just so I'm clear, I find something like this more offensive then things like "Asian's can't drive", "Asians are good at math", etc... Why? Because you're right. Those are terms that are technically "racist", but are generally true. Not in all instances of course, I think we can agree on that, but there's real reasons for that. I've taken cabs in Hong Kong, Seoul, Macau. Those people over there CAN'T drive. They have very, very few traffic lights. Very, very few "rules of the road". There ARE alot of Asians good at math. It's a cultural thing, we tend to be more driven by our parents then Western families are.

All that being said, there's nothing behind "Ching Chong" outside of racism. It's a racist term that serves no other purpose outside of being belittling to Asians.

        Ed-2990755

Honestly, Ed, perhaps people don't know Ching/Chong is a racial slur. I didn't until you said it was and I've lived in a city with a high Asian population for years and have many Asian friends. First I've ever heard of it.

In which case I say, good. If people don't even understand the slur then it's falling out of use. There was a person near the top that claimed to be of Asian descent and clearly had never heard it either.

There are many really dumb jokes and slurs on this thread which these people clearly imagine are okay. It's like a group at the playground teeheeing over the fact that one kid said poop. Makes no sense. Not funny--any of it.

But something no one here has mentioned, the Asians, like the Africans were brought here as slaves to build the railroads and as such started their lives in the US on an unequal playing field. It is not surprising there is a cultural sensitivity to name calling as their names were the only thing they had and even that was taken from them.

I'm white, people have been racist towards me. I was even told to go back to where I came from when they found out that I wasn't born in America (not to mention I was a child at the time and these were adults). Should I go to the newspapers? It's ridiculous that every single non-PC thing that happens is reported and made into a huge deal.

Yes, racism or even just making fun of a customer is highly unprofessional and should be dealt with.

But do you really need to whine about your problems to the rest of the world? Take care of it and be done with it.

At the end of the day, I am pretty sure it was meant as a harmless joke.. Racist or not. I have heard a zillion racist jokes from many different people. People need to lighten up a bit.

It probably was a harmless joke, and people do need to lighten up a bit, however, people also need to learn how to interact in a business setting. Yes, this was just a (probably) teenager, working at a fast food place, but if she never learned any better, she would be making those same harmless jokes in a more professional setting when she is older. Those sorts of jokes are OK amongst friends (for instance, one of my daughter's friends is Mexican and she jokes about that, sometimes using derogatory terms), but people really do need to know when the are OK and when they aren't.

I'm sure you know this, but I think it bears saying anyway. While racist jokes can seem inconsequential, one of racism's negative components is its dismissiveness of the human-ness of the targets of the racism. The person making the joke may not have deeply racist opinions, but repetition of the jokes may validate more virulent feelings in others. Maybe a reach? Maybe, just thinking out loud.

A joke is only funny when the person receiving the joke thinks it's funny. Doesn't matter what kind of joke as long as all parties think it's funny, then it's a joke. If one is offended, then it's not. Simple as that. In my opinion, the Ching Chong bit was racist. I'm Asian and for a stranger to print this on a receipt, I would be offended. There are better ways of making fun of customers but being racist is not one of them.

I wouldn't be offended. I would want them fired simply because you can't call me that, but i would still laugh hysterically about it. It is not front page, big news....everyone just believes they are owed something. As i said above, everyone bashes everyone else if they are different. As society, we must accept that. Am i saying it is right...no, but it is not as big of a deal as people make it out to be. Now, if you murder someone or beat them because they are asian or black or white, that is completely different, but honestly, just let words slide on by people, we are human beings and it is an imperfect world and there are more important issues than labeling on a receipt. Everyone on here believes they deserve something because of their believe or race...people hate blacks, asians, whites, purples, greens, homosexuals, alcoholics, little kids, old people, certain foods, pets, movies and everything else.

Racist or not, good fun or not, when you are working for a company you don't do stuff that clearly might offend a customer. Especially something that is unnecessary. If you do, and you get fired it's your fault.

To Blake, from your comment, it's a one side joke and you think it's funny without thinking how insensitive it is to describe an Asian. A joke is only funny when the person receiving it thinks it's funny.

I could find better ways to make a fun of a customer. How about C*ck lover? Chic Eater? Play on words but it's not necessary to use racist descriptions.

Blake, ching chong are never cute words to describe an Asian. It's insulting. Let's get that straight.

No, Chick-fil-A should ask the person who did it to apologize, after calmly explaining to them while although it was a little funny, you have to be sensitive to everybody when you are serving the public. Once again our media goes after easy stories instead of hiring journalist (CNN just fired a bunch of theirs after finding out they could just copy stuff off of the blogs) to report on real stories!

I am Asian as well. These things get old after awhile. Am I over-sensitive? You be the judge. I recently had an accident where a driver came out of a Hardee's and ran into the side of my car. The cop did not give the guy a ticket. Instead, he told me to be more careful of incoming traffic. Another case was when I used to shop Lowe's Home Improvement while building my house. I was there almost daily for months. Instead of seeing my face everyday as a good customer, a young man was told by the store manager to keep an eye on me. The stupid kid told me that when I asked him why he was following me around in the store. I can go on, but you get the idea.

I have another good one. I was shopping at Bass Pro Shop recently and had a cup of Starbuck's coffee in my hand and the leash of my dog in the other hand. I bought an item in the back of the store and paid for it there instead of at the front checkout. Since my hands were full, I tugged the item under my jacket and had the receipt in view. When I got to the front checkout, as a courtesy I told the cashier I have an item under the jacket and showed her the receipt. Her response was "What else do you have under there? Will you please unzip your jacket?" I was furious and called the manager to complain later. He said that was uncalled for and wanted to know which cashier it was. He wanted to look at the security cameras to see how I was treated and to make sure it never happens again. He asked what I was wearing so he could identify me on the camera. When I told him I am the Asian guy, I heard this chuckle on the phone, as if he was saying "So that's it. You are just overreacting." And he quickly hung up.

Therefore, the media will continue to publish anything that diverts from the world's citizens uniting against economic bondage, instead we will be given Chik-fil-a and American Idol.....Jesus Wept!

Yes, world troubles are all any of us should be thinking about. We shouldn't even bother working, what with how much time that takes away from worring about the state of the world. Stress about problems that you have no control over and die young of a heart attack from too much stress. That's the life we should all aspire to live!!

You really think we have it that bad here in the US? You apparently don't pay much attention to those news articles that you insist be all we are allowed to see.

The only generational bondage that exists in the US is ignorance.

So instead of doing the right thing and treating others the way that we'd like to be treated with respect, we should just say "Screw it, everyone else is doing it too so why bother?" I'd like to point out that it's that kind of an attitude that allowed Hitler to get away with murdering so many innocent Jewish people and also allows so many of today's attrocities to still occur.

Really? OK, tell me a "racist" (i.e. ethnically based) name for Caucasians, Anglo-Saxons, eastern Europeans, etc. that is still taken as a derogatory... i.e. don't give me "Yankee," "Gringo," or some mid-19th century "slang" for the Irish.

                                  (OK, I'll give you WOP.)

I'm serious. I am European (family arrived in New Amsterdam in 1660) and REALLY want to know an offensive term for Caucasians. Those in power easily ignore/dismiss those words as, well, "Uhh, let 'em try!... They don't count!

Yeah there are plenty of racist names for whites.

By the way none offend me. The political correct cowards on tonight are great entertainment.

                                  @SSick_of_Liberals,

                                  Yeah, nice try; but, sorry....

Many (most?!) of those words/expressions you listed are also (maybe mostly?) used by white people; and, the ones you've listed, "casper", "mayonnaise," or "blue eyed devil," I have never heard in my life. And if I had..., OMG, as a white person, in the "superior" position, I would be soooo NOT offended! Those things are akin to a small child calling an adult, "butt-hole"!

Nothing you've written is ANYTHING near as historically offensive as the N-word, or other words of its ilk.

Have you ever noticed how it's usually racists/sexists/xenophobes who "DECRY" 'political correctness? Hmm... "politically correct." Hmmmmm -- wasn't that term a GOP creation?... a GOP creation like "death tax" used to denigrate anyone even remotely left of the far right.

                                  IMHO.

Boris if you can read, which I doubt, since you are to busy telling me about myself. Try reading the last line. You asked for racists terms you got them. Don't try that GOP bull@!$%# with me either. "Superior position" so what are you trying to say you are superior to other races?

Yeah I'm blunt. @!$%# "political correctness" (which was made into a big deal in the Clinton years) and speak whats on your mind. Do things offend you or other people? Sure, but really no one gives a flying @!$%#. You may not find those words offensive, I may not find those words offensive (personally I find humor in them), but some may find them offensive. Get off your "superior" soap box. Someone who gives a @!$%# might kick it out from under you. While your at it get out more if you haven't ever heard a white man get called casper by another race. Try turning the thought police on tv off some time, and learn how to think for yourself.

Have you never seen a black comic make white jokes? I find humor in them, but the hypocrisy from people of your "ilk" runs to deep to laugh. Now put the shoe on the other foot, what if a white comic made black jokes? They would be torn to shreds by the talking heads. The hypocrisy from the liberal left runs deep. People need to remove the sticks from their asses and enjoy life.

And you really don't care if a Mid-western white man calls you a "pasty-face[d]," Nazi-""klan-man""? Good on you, boy!

Wow... I'm impressed. A lot of racists have a problem being called out. But not you, "Sir."

Then I guess you have no problem whatsoever with me, an educated white man, calling you a trailer-trash Nazi Klansman racist... right?! Especially if I do it in black-face!!! (OMG!!! Even better!)

This is actually a tough one. The behavior is clearly unacceptable in our society and contrary to Chick-fil-A's business procedures. Truth be told, whenever I go to a Chick-fil-A, I feel almost overwhelmed with courtesy. So this is way out of bounds. This kind of racism cannot be accepted. I commend the customers for speaking up, and the manager of the restaraunt for responding vigorously. But, perhaps, a bit too vigorously?

This person got fired "immediately." No docking of pay. No chance to apologize or explain. No disciplinary action of any kind, other than "yer fired!" So instead of perhaps giving this person a chance to improve, start over and learn anew, they got immediately fired, with no chance to repent. So, instead of having a worker who might learn a valuable life lesson and move on to be more productive and courteous in the future, you've got an ex-worker out there now who is convinced that a couple of "Chings and Chongs" got her fired. I don't defend her behavior, but if people don't have a chance to get better, how are people going to get better? Firing her probably will just harden her racial prejudices, not alleviate them.

So why don't they fire employees who do the same things against gays? Oh, that's because the whole organization gives to anti-gay causes.

You may be right, Bart, but I can't comment because this particular story was about customers of Asian ancestry. If this was about about gay epithets, it would be equally outrageous, but as it is, this story is about slurs against Asians.

                                                      @John Brown...

I believe in God and he created us all in HIS image! God is not racist, nor is he against gays, other religons etc. Satan will cloud your judgment and tell you that God only loves a select few but he loves us all no matter our sexual desires! The God I was raised to love and pray to loves me becasue he created me and though I am not sexually attracted to women I hold nothing against those women who are or the men who are attracted to men. When I stand before God on my final day I will thank him for never giving up on us even though we are the ones who choose to allow evil into our hearts and 9 times out of 10 choose to believe in hate over him.

But like, isn't it a known thing that in the bible it's taught that homosexuality is wrong, therefore, people who study the bible would believe the same thing? Why is this so shocking?

I'm glad the worker was fired on the spot, more establishments should act in the same manner whenever company policies and ethics are not followed.

Carole Ann Graziano--yes, I think that the Bible is just fine in Leviticus and Romans. Of course, I actually understand what the Bible is referring to, which apparently you do not.

The passage in Leviticus refers specifically to a particular pagan ritual in which the male priest dressed as a female and had sex with a male on the altar. I do not have a problem with that particular ritual being forbidden to believers. I also understand shellfish was banned (eating shellfish or pork in that particular time meant that one had to bring it in--a very time-consuming and costly effort of conspicuous consumption while others were hungry), and why women were banned from wearing clothes of multiple cloth types (it meant they were prostitutes). I think that pagan rituals, conspicuous consumption, and prostitution should all be avoided.

The passages in Romans pertain to, you know, Romans. In that time period, Roman males had sex with anything that moved: wives, prostitutes, women/children, slaves, animals . . . male or female. This is a little thing called promiscuousness. I think that Roman practices which allowed men to have sex with whatever they wanted, whenever they wanted are wrong. This refers to what we would now call "straight" males having sex with other males--something I also think is wrong.

However, the Bible (and particularly, Christ) says nothing about males falling in love with other males and forming relationships. Some people are born with no genitals or ambiguous genitals. Some female-appearing people have "male" DNA. Some people's brains are washed with one set of hormones when they are fetuses (we all start out as females, by the way), and then the body is washed with a different set of hormones--creating a mismatch between brain and physical gender. Some women are born with amygdalas and other physical characteristics related to gender that are closer to that of males; some males are born with amygdalas and other physical characteristics related to gender that are closer to that of females. Male homosexuality is related to stress in the mother (the mother is stressed, she creates too much testosterone, and the fetus develops homosexual); female homosexuality is related to amphetemine use for dieting (the mother's body is stressed by the amphetimine use as well as the reduction in calories, and the fetus develops homosexual).

Look--God creates some fetuses conjoined, other fetuses are just a shoulder attached to a foot with a shock of hair (they don't develop properly). There is a great variety of ways in which people are born--and, apparently, God intends it all. None of it is a "mistake." It's just the way it is. Some people are born homosexual, and that's a provable scientific fact. Whether or not they choose to act on that by pairing off with a person of their own gender is a different issue.

Not that long ago, it was perfectly fine for males to have "romantic" relationships with one another--even though they weren't supposed to have sex. It was also perfectly fine for females to have "romantic" relationships with one another--though society had less prohibition on women having sex with women. In such a time period, people who were homosexual men probably just had romantic relationships with one another, but sex with women as women were not believed to be fully human anyway (they were basically animated blow-up dolls to men of the period).

Things are different now--homosexual men pair off with each other because we believe that only people who love one another should marry and have sex. In a culture which believes that only people who love one another should marry and have sex, homosexuals are going to express their behavior in the way they currently express themselves. It's just the way it is.

In any case--Christ himself said that a man should not put aside his wife to marry another. Gingrich has done that twice, and McCain did it once (his first wife had cancer, by the way). The Bible says that people should not engage in adultery, and Gingrich has done that. I could run down any number of Biblical edicts (including those against amassing wealth for one's own benefit) that Christians do not take terribly seriously and don't criticize one another for--well, not as long as they are all conservative "true believers"--though they just love to pick on the out-of-context passages about male/male sex . . . and ignore the fact that there are no parallel edicts about female/female sex (though the Puritans noted it and did not punish female same-sex behaviors as strictly as they did males) which would indicate that it wasn't homosexuality that was the issue.

If you do go read your Bible, be sure to pay attention to the passages in which Christ tells people that they should not judge others and should not be hypocrites. I think you might find it informative.

It would have been a more valuable lesson to have had the employee personally apologize to the customers...this would have stuck with her for a lifetime and further sent a valuable lesson to the other employees ...although the thought of "ching & chong" may very well be humorous...but the work place is not the place to execute such humor...Not a firing offense...should have been a training opportunity...in my opinion...

Sensitivity training!?! If her own mother hasn't taught her to respect others you think her employer can by just talking to her? This was the best type of lesson and at the right age. You don't want her to learn that lesson when she's a middle-aged mom responsible for putting food in her kid's mouth. The best lessons are the one's where the consequences make sure you never repeat that mistake again...and I'll bet she never repeats that one again ( in public anyways!).

Further proof that since social media is so ubiquitous now, you should always keep in mind that the toes upon which you walk today may be connected to the posterior end you have to kiss tomorrow.

Look, this isn't the movie Clerks. You can't just rip into the occasional customer whether they deserve it or not (and having been there, I can tell you that some actually do deserve it) and with cellphones having cameras plus the ability to report something almost the instant it happens...just be on your best behavior and none of that happens

Case in Point: Kevin Smith vs. Southwest Airlines. The very moment he felt slighted as a customer, SA tried like crazy to shut him up. Well with the tools available to us today that one small slight you throw a customer's way can have you in a world of hot water in seconds.

We're all human and we all make stupid mistakes but if you control your urges while you're at work, you won't have to worry about it negatively affecting you. Pretty simple.

If people are going to quote Leviticus to bash Homosexuals they should take into consideration all the other things Leviticus says are abominations to God. Things like wearing textiles of mixed fiber, eating shellfish, eating pork... If you want to live the way the Old Testament tells you to, then you should be a Hasidic Jew, not a modern Christian, as it is an ancient JEWISH code of conduct. Women would also be the possession of their fathers and husbands, in that case. It's also supposedly an abomination for women to lead men, if I remember correctly.

And yet, most Christians usually have no problem hand waving the Ten Commandments, which are the real laws god supposedly handed down that we are to obey. Hypocrites.
