Did we all read the same article? Somehow, many of you folks seem to think this is about the Justice Dept stopping Sheriff Arapaio from enforcing immigration laws. That's not what I read!

What I read is that 43% of the folks who were arrested for violating those laws WERE LEGAL AMERICAN CITIZENS who just happened to be Latino. They were arrested not because they committed a crime, but because of the way they look... it's called racial profiling.

The problem isn't that Sheriff Joe wants to enforce immigration laws. The problem is that he uses racial profiling to accomplish this task and while using that broad brush "net", he arrests innocent Maricopa county citizens at rate of 43% !!!

I've been around long enough to know.

I find it laughable that cops are pulling ALL Latinos over at the rate that the media tries to spin it. I drive on the roads in AZ every day. I've witnessed drivers cutting people off and making other dangerous moves in front of cops and it usually takes you speeding 10+mph above the limit, illegally driving in the HOV lane, or acting drunk in order to get pulled over. What's more, practically all of the cars on the road that are a '95 model or later have tinted windows. The best visibility you have is a sillouette! How in the hell could you tell what race anyone is?? If the standard for traffic stops is so low and you can only see a person's race if you happen to get a good look at them through your rear view mirror, then DPS and city cops have their hands full if they are intentionally doing blanket stops of Latinos.

My opinion on proof of citizenship is the following: if you are an immigrant here LEGALLY, you are required by law to have your documentation on you at ALL TIMES. It is a law that has existed since the 1940s. NOT Sheriff Joe's law. A federal law!

Having said that, let's set up a VERY plausible scenario here in AZ......... A driver is pulled over for speeding. He has no driver's license, no proof of insurance, no registration, has a heavy accent and speaks broken English. It is absolutely ridiculous for the feds to prohibit law enforcement from enforcing a federal law in that case. You wouldn't even have to look at the guy to know he was probably illegal. And with zero identification, cops would have reasonable suspicion and probable cause to ask. Race should not even play into it. If the driver could only produce a valid license then there is no need to ask about legal status. BOTTOMLINE!

My problem with Arpaio is not that he's doing raids and deportations, it's that overall he's not doing his job. There are many complaints by citizens that his office is behind in doing investigations of other crimes (assaults, robberies, etc.). He should be reminded of what his job description is and that his job isn't only in deporting illegals, it's also to maintain peace & order.

If he doesn't want to comply, Arpaio should be forced to resign so we could find someone who can do a better job.

The DOJ interviewed 150 inmates, likely saying to them- "do you feel your civil rights were violated when you were arrested", and now has the ammo to take down a local sheriff they've been threatening for years. Let's get this straight- Arizona tried to enforce the existing immigration laws and the DOJ tried to stop them. Arizona tried to change legislation to protect themselves from illegal immigration, so the DOJ and the appeals courts were used to stop them. Arizona has a sheriff trying to enforce the laws (while constantly being observed by DOJ officials) and now the DOJ thinks they can get civil rights violations chages to stick against him. Why??? Because the DOJ, the President, and the administration don't want the laws enforced...... they want the votes. They want to mess up the whole situation so much that they can create a "crisis" of their own and then respond to it by creating new immigration law. It's just that simple. They want to pen the immigration reform (next year) so that the President gets all of the votes possible and retain his office. To do that they need to make villians of anyone trying to do enforce things as they are so that they can claim that the current system can't work and theirs would be better. Then they create the grand amnesty program and whalla- they get the endorsements of La Raza and all of the minority votes.

I saw the sheriff in an interview recently where he was asked about investigations against him. He said that the ACLU, the DOJ, and others were constantly trying to stick something on him so he makes sure that his staff follows the letter of the law and he constantly trains them to do so. I believe him over the DOJ any day of the week.

The DOJ is willing to set up illegal international gun trade to validate a false statement by the President so that he can create more gun laws, lie to Congress when subpoenaed, and close the files to the media when the story turns against them (try to see the Terry files now). Why on earth would you believe them on another hot item like immigration enforcement?? They haven't earned that trust!

The problem here is this guy isn't empowered to enforce immigration laws. They are the purview of another branch of government. And all of these abuses that he is being charged with come from the simple fact that he didn't know how to enforce Federal laws.

Roscoe, and all the rest of you who are fervent supporters of Arpaio: The DOJ investigation was about violating the civil rights of legal U.S. citizens as well as foreign visitors who were here legally; their only "crime" was that they were at the wrong place at the wrong time and fit a "profile". They were arrested and detained; only sometime much later were they finalyl released.

Now Roscoe, lets' suppose for a second that there was some truth to your rant, that its the illegal immigrants who "rob, rape, or kill you", then if you bothered to look at Sheriff Joe's record for arresting violent offenders, you would see that he, well, sucks at it. The fact of the matter is the vast majority of illegals MCSO has arrested have committed no violent crimes - their only offense is having a fake ID. A typical MCSO raid invoved capturing some janitors late at night, cleaning the Mesa Public Library.

Joe has a history of arresting and harrassing anyone who opposes him and his policies, with the result that Maricopa County taxpayers end up paying millions of $$ in the form of lawsuits/settlements. MCSO is the most highly litigated sheriff department of its size anywhere in this country.

It's okay to go after illegal immigrants - nobody disputes that. But at the same time, it's not okay to violate the law and the constitution in the process.

Border Patrol and ICE agents have the authority to stop anyone, anywhere and at any time and demand proof of citizenship. They need absolutely not justification in stopping someone for any other reason.

I don't know about other states but a Peace Officer can stop you in California and ask you for your I.D. for no reason at all, haven't heard too many people complaining about that. I find it laughable that cops are pulling ALL Latinos over at the rate that the media tries to spin it. I drive on the roads in AZ every day. I've witnessed drivers cutting people off and making other dangerous moves in front of cops and it usually takes you speeding 10+mph above the limit, illegally driving in the HOV lane, or acting drunk in order to get pulled over. What's more, practically all of the cars on the road that are a '95 model or later have tinted windows. The best visibility you have is a sillouette! How in the hell could you tell what race anyone is?? If the standard for traffic stops is so low and you can only see a person's race if you happen to get a good look at them through your rear view mirror, then DPS and city cops have their hands full if they are intentionally doing blanket stops of Latinos.

My opinion on proof of citizenship is the following: if you are an immigrant here LEGALLY, you are required by law to have your documentation on you at ALL TIMES. It is a law that has existed since the 1940s. NOT Sheriff Joe's law. A federal law!

Having said that, let's set up a VERY plausible scenario here in AZ......... A driver is pulled over for speeding. He has no driver's license, no proof of insurance, no registration, has a heavy accent and speaks broken English. It is absolutely ridiculous for the feds to prohibit law enforcement from enforcing a federal law in that case. You wouldn't even have to look at the guy to know he was probably illegal. And with zero identification, cops would have reasonable suspicion and probable cause to ask. Race should not even play into it. If the driver could only produce a valid license then there is no need to ask about legal status. BOTTOMLINE!

I have read on this page that the sheriff is right the sheriff is worng . the Border Patrol does not have the right to stop you and demand who you are and where you are going. 1 The sheriff doing his job is not in itself wrong. Sandy, I hate to break it to you, but all persons in the United States, whether they are here legally or not, have the same rights guaranteed by the US Constitution as full citizens. They have rights against illegal search, the right to a speedy trial, the right to not be subjected to cruel and unusual punishment, the right to not incriminate themselves, etc. This is established law. The government also has the right to deport them when they are apprehended. The devil is in the details on how to identify and apprehend them. As long as their rights are not violated in their apprehension, all is well. The Sheriff's office BROKE THE LAW by stopping vehicles without probable cause and when they detained innocent people on mere suspicion due to their ethnicity. I'm all for deporting those here illegally except perhaps in the most extraordinary circumstances, but only when the law is observed by law enforcement. Once law enforcement is allowed to violate the law, no matter the intention, we have truly lowered American values to the level of our enemies.
