If President Obama discovered a cure for the deadliest of all cancers the hate crowd would concoct some way to belittle his achievement. If any past president would have placed this medal around this soldier's neck I doubt this would have ever been an issue.

As a former Combat Marine in Nam and 22 years service I have seen many medals given to those who do not deserve them. Especially to occifers. Be as it may, when all is said and done, those who recieved any medal know in their heart whether it was earned or not. I give the media no credence at all as they are the enemy and the media needs to be slam dunked and put in their place.

Yeah, yeah, and in the heat of battle, people aren't exactly head-counting. What's clear is that the guy went into a firefight to save his comrades and whether he saved 13 or 8 or 4 counts less than the fact that he exposed himself to fire in order to do it. Does the Military sometimes hype this stuff? Sure - look at Jessica Lynch, who got made a hero because she took a wrong turn and her gun jammed. To Ms. Lynch's credit, SHE denied the heroism claim, but, by then, the Military had milked it for all the press they needed.

It's also the case that individuals can overstate their heroism - I served under Adm. Hoffman just like John Kerry did and I was inclined to support Kerry, until I found out how he got his Silver Star and two Bronze Stars (and 3 Purple Hearts) and realized that I'm a G*dd**n hero, if that's all it takes. Of course, he allegedly wrote up his own citations and, ya' know, sometimes a bit of hyperbole creeps in.

The worst thing, however, is a bunch of armchair critics, who have never taken fire, attempting to score some cheap political points, to try to make this a major issue so that they can, what? So they can discredit Obama? Or the Corps? What purpose is being served here and what purpose is being sought? Give it a rest. Semper Fi, Marine. The rest of 'em can bugger off.

In regards to Sgt. Meyer, as stated previously, the man is a hero and should always be treated as such. If they want to investigate something go and find out what happened during the whole illegal fast and furious fiasco that this administration seems to keep sweeping under the rug!

Didn't see the ceremony so I have no idea on what was said, but below is the text of SGT Meyer's citation. I do know that contrary to what is stated above you can't fit 24 troops in an armored HMMWV. And his citation does not say that.

Corporal Meyer maintained security at a patrol rally point while other members of his team moved on foot with two platoons of Afghan National Army and Border Police into the village of Ganjgal for a pre-dawn meeting with village elders. Moving into the village, the patrol was ambushed by more than 50 enemy fighters firing rocket propelled grenades, mortars, and machine guns from houses and fortified positions on the slopes above. Hearing over the radio that four U.S. team members were cut off, Corporal Meyer seized the initiative. With a fellow Marine driving, Corporal Meyer took the exposed gunner's position in a gun-truck as they drove down the steeply terraced terrain in a daring attempt to disrupt the enemy attack and locate the trapped U.S. team. Disregarding intense enemy fire now concentrated on their lone vehicle, Corporal Meyer killed a number of enemy fighters with the mounted machine guns and his rifle, some at near point blank range, as he and his driver made three solo trips into the ambush area. During the first two trips, he and his driver evacuated two dozen Afghan soldiers, many of whom were wounded. When one machine gun became inoperable, he directed a return to the rally point to switch to another gun-truck for a third trip into the ambush area where his accurate fire directly supported the remaining U.S. personnel and Afghan soldiers fighting their way out of the ambush. Obama had praised Meyer...there's the problem right there. If President Obama praised something, then there's going to be a whole lot of resistance, usually from republicans or teabaggers.

That's not a run of the mill medal. There has to be credible eyewitnesses to the members' actions that would have put hiom/her on the road to being awarded the medal. I only hope this Marine's service, indeed was heroic and not fabricated.

Post operation reports stating that that the survivors were airlifted out and there were only 12 total Marines involved? Hmmm. As I recall, lying is not that uncommon in the Military hierarchy (Tillman, Tailhook, etc...). Every veteran who has dodged bullets and IED's deserves our thanks, but very few deserve the CMH. If his own fellow Marines who were on the same operation haven't made sworn statements to attest to his heroics. If his driver's story doesn't jibe with the "official"account. If there were only 12 Marines involved to begin with and the post-action report states that several survivors were airlifted... something is amiss. I'd far prefer to have my comrades back-up my story than some career suits.

in regards to sgt meyers, it is impossible to receive such a medal unless there was absolute proof and evidence of his actions.

and believe you me, that many experts spent alot of time and energy to ensure the sgt was deserving of the medal.
