Subscribe to RSSThe English Department at Rutgers University says it responded swiftly and “with severity and directness” after finding out that a graduate student sent an email to a group of students inviting them to a whites-only screening of the film “Song of the South.”
Carolyn Williams, professor and chair of the department, denied allegations contained in a letter to the editor of the student newspaper that department officials had refused to publicly acknowledge “the racist, discriminatory nature of the email.”
“The Department of English, like the rest of Rutgers University, finds bias acts unacceptable,” she said.
The controversy over the email was first reported this week by The Daily Targum, the student newspaper. The email was sent Sept. 28 by a white graduate student in the English Department to a group of students enrolled with her in a class titled "Post-Bellum/Pre-Harlem.” The student invited the group, reportedly also white, to watch a screening of the 1946 Walt Disney movie “Song of the South,” which some modern-day observers say is racist and stereotypical in its portrayal of blacks just after the Civil War.
The film, a blend of live action and animation, is based on the fictional African-American character Uncle Remus created in the 1800s by author Joel Chandler Harris. In the movie, Uncle Remus regales a young boy who runs away from home with a series of delightful fables.
"If you do come, hooch is most welcome, as are strawhats and other Darkeyisms. I might even buy a watermillyum if I get enough interest," the email read in part, according to the Targum. The email also noted that guests should be careful whom they brought, because "I might yell racist things at the TV."
Elizabeth Braxton, another graduate student in English, said she was upset when she found out about the email. In a letter to the student newspaper, Braxton and fellow students in a “Race, Ethnicity, and Inequality in Education” class complained:
"This racist email, and the other students' reactions to it - including their silence - have now shaped the learning environment in their classroom, in much the same way as the department's failure to act appropriately has shaped the environment beyond the classroom. A few professors scolded the writer. However, no one in the department publicly acknowledged the racist, discriminatory nature of the email. This was a moment when faculty could have made clear the seriousness with which they regard the critical topics they discuss in the courses they teach.
A meaningful and important discussion could have taken place that may have changed or engaged people. Instead, an uncomfortable topic was largely avoided, and the feelings of the student who sent the email were prioritized above the pain of students of color, breeding resentment and misinformation about what was wrong with the email in the first place.”
Braxton said Friday she and her classmates stand by the letter but declined further comment.
Williams, in an email Friday to msnbc.com, disputed the assertion that department and university officials were lax in responding.
The screening never took place, and the sender apologized within a few days of the incident to the students she sent it to and to the director of graduate studies, Williams said. She then apologized again to her whole class in early October, Williams said.
“At that time, her apology was accepted. Nevertheless, the original email -- and waves of responses to it -- have of course continued to be hurtful,” Williams said.
In a response letter sent this week to the Targum, Williams and Rebecca Walkowitz, acting director of graduate studies, wrote: “In fact we responded immediately with severity and directness; it could not have been misunderstood what we thought about the offending email.”
Williams would not say Friday whether the author of the email could face discipline, citing privacy rules.
The incident led to faculty-student meetings and a “civility forum” held Dec. 7, and a committee will begin work early next year on a policy addressing bias.
“The learnings are huge, for all of us -- and they will continue in the spring semester, when we are planning to have workshops, group discussions, lectures, perhaps a conference, and many other activities that will continue to educate our own department members (and perhaps others) about how to respond if such an incident were ever to occur again,” Williams told msnbc.com.
“We are committed not only to this educational mission, but to preventing bias in any form, and I look forward, with the department, to pushing forward with this initiative.”
It's not the first time Rutgers has found itself engulfed in discrimination controversy. In September 2010, Tyler Clementi, an 18-year-old Rutgers freshman, commited suicide after finding out that he had been taped -- allegedly by his roomate -- having a sexual encounter with another man. And the Education Department's Office for Civil Rights is also reportedly looking into complaints that Rutgers administrators have done little to respond to anti-Semitism on campus.

While I don't agree with this, if it's a private event at someones residence then there is nothing anyone can do about this. It would be the same as someone putting a white only or black only sign on their house. It's sad but racism I fell will probably never die in this country.
If this was done with a school email account, somethign certainly can be done about it. And something should be done about it.
madcitizen - there is nothing acceptable about this. This was a graduate student inviting others in his/her class to a "whites only" screening. It is in no way acceptable that this invitation was e-mailed to others in the class. Racism has to be called out - whenever and wherever it happens. And, this comes from a very white female.

This incident happened in late September, early October. It was taken care of at the time. Why is it news today?
A graduate student? It's nice to know that some POS has the ability and resources to go to school while I could barely afford mine, and yet this same POS is just that...a POS.

KC Bass - I am on the left and I still believe people have a right to hold their own beliefs however stupid or distasteful they may be to me. If this was done on a private e-mail account, being held at the person's private residence, and was not in violation of the student code of conduct that students agree to in order to attend school there, I don't believe the University should take any action. Of course the person may be ostracized by a large portion of the student population and that is their right to freedom of speech as well. I don't think too many people are going to want to be known as her friend after this has come out.

This school, any school, is obligated to teach and enforce ethical conduct. There was nothing ethical about this get together. From what little I've seen in the news, Rutgers needs to review and brush up on theirs.

Oh Sandy.... how utterly ignorant. I'm a Conservative (and white, and was raised in a community with only caucasians until I was 17) ~ and I have been strongly, vocally against racism and bigotry since I was 10 years old (and believe me, it takes a LOT to stand up to the majority). In addition, I raised my 3 children to be color-blind ~ to the point where the differences they noted when describing people were 'glasses vs no glasses', or 'striped shirt vs sweater' ~ as opposed to noticing one person was white, and the other black. For the record, all three of my kids are "Young Republicans", and all actively advocate for equality and against racism ~ the youngest through several committees on campus.
I like to consider them 'part of the solution', whereas you, obviously, are part of the problem.
English departments tend to have liberals in them--I do not doubt that Rutgers is no exception. Liberals tend to respond to this sort of "comic" racism by having "dialogues" and explaining that the students need to be more "sensitive."
Why is everyone assuming that the student had to be conservative to send out this email? Go to your local university and look at the English department. It is a fair guess that you will find largely males, largely of European extraction. You will find some females, usually feminists, usually of European extraction. There may be some representation of people from India (a former British colony), some representation of Black people (usually from former British colonies in the Caribbean), some representation of Native Americans (often European Americans masquerading as Native American, but sometimes a couple of actual Native Americans--usually "civilized" tribes), and some representation of Hispanics (usually of Caucasian descent).
You know what you almost certainly won't find: conservative black males, conservative black females, Asians of any stripe, conservative or evangelical Native Americans, and women who think that feminism tries to erase class and racial lines as a means of letting European American feminists pretend that they aren't privileged.
English departments love to pretend that they are "open to all voices"--but they employ mobbing techniques to keep anyone who actually has a different point of view from expressing it in a way that any action will be taken. Yeah--go ahead and speak up . . . they love that because it gives them the chance to band together and feel that solidarity.
The fact that this graduate student, in this day and age, felt very comfortable in sending out this message and still actually has a position in the department tells you a lot about that English department, and really, most English departments in the US. They are the single most racist, classist, (oddly enough) sexist, and ethnocentric group on nearly any campus.

Hi TXHorseman. Very good point actually if they are encouraging unethical behavior. In other words, harmful towards others and if they're encouraging racism, then they should be disbanded. As I've already mentioned, I don't see anything wrong with people desiring an atmosphere of being around others like themselves and that doesn't always mean race. Personally, I didn't see anything wrong with viewing "Song of the South". I see plenty of harm in the language that was used in the invitation email. They weren't just planning on viewing a seldom seen flick from another era. It would appear the film / get together was being used as a vehicle to disparage others. Your thoughts on this, TXHorseman???

TXhorseman, why not tell the whole story? NAACP was started by two white attorneys and two black attorneys to combat the Jim Crow laws (which were strictly enforced especially in your state). United Negro College Fund was started to help disadvantaged black kids get into college. By the way, they have paid for the college education of many poor whites, too. Black Panthers formed to combat the Oakland police who where at the time, the most corrupt in the nation and would pistol whip you simply because you had an afro(many whites in the Black Panthers, too). BET has whites on it's Board, too, and even though I don't watch it much, I do see many whites there, too! Let's do a web search and see how many scholarships there are for Irish, Italians, Swedish, and other European people. Should we have a problem with that? I don't think so. These kind of programs have always been there for peole of European descent. No one had a problem with any of it, until the United Negro College Fund was formed. What's the problem, here? A poor white can get funds from the UNCF, but a poor negro certainly wouldn't get a dime from the Irish or Celtic College Fund!
None of the groups you cry about have ever denied or barred whites from joining. None of them. So stop your crying and be proud of what you are! The student responsible for the tasteless email and the planned movie event is a disgusting individual... But anyone has the right to view the movie Song of the South or any other "racist" film. I do think it's horribly tasteless and I personally would never be associated with people like that, but it's their right to be dumbasses. If the student violated university policy, discipline them. If no actual rules were broken, leave it alone and let the university continue to plan to make new policies to address racism and bias on campus. Problem solved.

Just a thought Kat. I am white, could I have a White history month? A white entertainment television channel? Cracker magazine? Or how about a White pride rally? The answer is NO. Dont put anything stupid like white folks only. Saying that, I happen to love that movie, I've seen it once as a child, and loved the stories, I understand it, don't feel it's racist and I am black. I've also read the stories which it is based on. I don't know if the student is a conservative or not, but actually he is an idiot. Also this proves once again that folks up north are just as stupid as the ones in the rest of the country.

Some of the most interesting people I've worked with over the last 10 years have been people from different backgrounds.
I'm not sure what specific infraction these graduate students may be guilty of. It may be that their actions are covered under various clauses of the constitution. But why would they want to hold a "Whites Only" event? ...and who would really want to attend such an event?

Well considering the film to be viewed I can understand why you wouldn't want blacks to attend as there would no doubt be a fight before the film was over , so I guess I can understand the white only to a point . But it does bring up the issue of , why do all other races have their separate events , schools , etc ... but whites are not allowed ??? So until all race is removed from all things I guess racism will be around a while .
when was that in the 60's ? Now the children and the grandchildren are paying for or for fathers mistakes i guess thats all fine and good though. I was beat half to death in my old neighborhood by 6 african american kids ages around 15 to 22 I was out of work almost 2 yrs because of the injurys i sustained during the attack and was forced to move out of it because a bullet came through my wall when 2 rival gangs had a gun fight. I guess i created all that hate. Its sad because i actually tryed to help some of the kids who were fresh out of jail i am a masonry sub and would hire them as laborers but as soon as they got back into the grove so to speak they would quit nd say why should i work for 400 or 500 $ a week when i can make that in a day? White people may have been that way when i was to young to remember but should i have to pay for there mistakes?
This is no more racist than any other private party held anywhere else in the country being mailed out on a student's email account. It it was about an NAACP rally, no one would say it was racist, even though the topic is clearly promoting one race.

The argument " If blacks did it then it would never make the news" Is the same ole argument you people like to make. Trust me if blacks sent out this email it would make the news cause someone, such as yourself would rightfully make sure it did. Miss Tyson - Churches, restaurants, etc that you felt excluded from were all creations of whites. There were not restaurants or churches in black Africa. If blacks had created such institutions they would have had the opportunity to exclude non-whites if and when they showed up. Of course you feel like an outsider to so many places: schools, churches etc etc. they are artifacts of a civilization not created by your people. What race has ever created a society to be used by another race? Did yours? You speak of not only parasitism on another race's society but with a sense of entitlement that is breathtaking. For that you are not wholly to blame. Blacks in earlier times in America did not think for a second that European-derived civilization belonged to them. They knew the difference between the primitive level of subsistence they reached in Africa and never went beyond, and that which they found here, which is why every 'back to Africa movement failed. No matter how histrionic the complaints, blacks never considered returning to the homeland. But the entitlement complex you so proudly wear is also ironically an invention of whites; liberal whites who have a pathological problem with defending their identity and culture. It is a social pathology. The fact that many of them are now in control of the media and school boards, teachers unions etc. doesn't change the canard they support. They especially react to incidents as the one at Rutgers because they see schools and colleges as a system of leftist propaganda. A real institution of education would simply support the students right to free speech, Assembly, association and expression. It would not insist that the student imbibe certain 'isms'. Rutgers is acting like a Third Reich institution insisting it's students subscribe to a particular position on race. An educated man is a man who has learned to think for himself. Any university that teaches conformity of ideas is a fraud. It is a propaganda and programming center. Nothing more. By and large the whites have been amazingly tolerate. For instance the computer you are using. It is a wholly white-invented technology. Whites could have restricted it's use to their own race (as the Romans might have done. They considered the knowledge they had gained as a proprietary possession). Yet, you get to use it. As you do cars, phones, refrigerators, dentists etc etc etc. None of these things came from your people. All of it from whites (and countless other advances). Yet, you insist you included - on what grounds? Because it benefits you? On those grounds we could all rob banks. I've long since moved out of that little insulated piece of (ahem) *heaven*, and have lived in Chicago, Mpls and Boston.... in 'non-gated' communities (ummm... really hope you're picking up on the sarcasm here, tho' judging by the assumptions you leaped to at full tilt, can fully understand if it takes you a while to comprehend). To help you out ~ "non-gated" means neighborhoods with a pretty much equal mix of more than several races and nationalities ~ and working class. Actually, I don't think it's at all "Third Reich" to insist that students NOT use an educational institution to foster teaching of or belief in racial supremacy or separatism. That having been said, Song of the South is a wonderful film, so advanced in its day both for the blending of animation and live action but also for its message, where a wealthy little white boy's affluent family has little time for him, leaves his upbringing to Uncle Remus and the other Black household servants, and from them, not his "family," he learns the meaning of unconditional love and true acceptance. This is the message of the film and it is valid for all times and places, stereotypical behaviors and dialect being depicted notwithstanding. This was one of my mother's favorite films of all times and she insisted that I see it when it was released in the "once every seven years" Disney tradition for what she correctly predicted would be the last time in the early 1970's. (She saw where "political correctness" was heading, even before it was ever called that.) This must be a pirated/bootleg copy as my understanding that it is "locked in the Disney vault" and will remain such until the copyright expires around 2042, so I doubt that I'll get to watch it then.

Dear Sue - Thanks for the list from your "black studies" class. You forgot to mention a few items that "Professor Leonard Jeffries" taught at CCNY some years ago in his black studies course in New York City; the airplane first made out of bamboo and flown around ancient Egypt (Gee, Egyptologists tell us they were in fact migrated Persians - i.e. the Hamitic branch of the Caucasian race). Also that a Dr. Haku invented the white race in a test tube under a palm tree six thousand years ago. If you add those two tidbits to your list you could pass his course and get three credits through the mail. Somehow when I am using a cell phone that incorporates quantum physics and a computer it's a little difficult to regard peanut butter as an "invention". The other questionable items on your list are so dependent on pre-existing white technology (e.g. electricity, metal, a written language, plastic etc) and the education in western knowledge via the school system that it's hard to fathom what you mean when you say "blacks invented" them.

By the way, (just a few notes) the "lock" was used in the middle ages and ancient Rome. Too bad they didn't know to wait until your African American filed for a patent for his version in the 20th century. That is another version. It is not "the person who invented THE LOCK" (Jeeze). Many versions of things were filed for patents. That is not the same as a gene pool the is continually innovative (which you seem to imply). If it is, you'll have to explain to the world why then Africa (excluding Egyptian civilization which was not Negroid) but why sub-Sahara Africa produced basically nothing. Not even a written language. Where was all that innovative genius you are trying to extrapolate from a list of patents filed for, 99% of which are slight twists are other inventors work and all based on pre-existing technology. Fred Waring, the bandleader is credited with being the "inventor" of the blender. But he did not invent the metal process, the motor, the blades or container. He simply combined these already existing things into a different way. This is at best the sort of "inventions" you are referring to. Sorry but there has been no black Isac Newton or Galileo or .. the list is endless - as I'm sure you know. But the doorstop as an invention? Try a rock.

Recently, it has become popular to spread yet even more misinformation, this time regarding black inventions. While history has proven that blacks have failed to contribute anything significant to the building of civilization, campaigns are spreading across America attempting to credit black "inventors" with certain inventions. One such campaign is promoted by IBM who offers a poster of "Famous Black Inventions." Included on this poster are pictures of blacks and their supposed inventions— including the traffic light. While the black Garrett A. Morgan did submit and receive a patent for a traffic signal in 1923, he did not invent the traffic light. The first "traffic light" was created in London in 1868, used to control the traffic of pedestrians and buggies. It was illuminated by gas using green and red colors, and was manually operated by policemen who turned a lever to reveal the appropriate color to the appropriate lane of traf fic. Railroads were already using a lighting system as well. It was a police officer, William Potts, who first improved on the gas-light invention, which required a police officer to operate. William Potts recognized the need for something better when he observed that police officers were spending much of their time directing traffic after the invention of the automobile. He created an electric lighting system using red, amber, and green to control automobile traffic in Detroit. It was first used in 1920 and was the herald of the modern traffic light. William Potts was not black. Garrett A. Morgan's traffic light of 1923 did not contribute significantly to the traffic light of today, but resembled train switching lights already in use. When reading these lists of so-called inventions, which are especially prevalent on the Internet, it becomes painfully obvious the lies contained within those lists. These lists are especially popular on college campuses. What many are doing is obtaining patent lists of blacks and then attempting to pass them off as inventions. Most of what these people are doing is taking a certain invention, modifying it in some way, and then patenting that modification. In other words, they are not patenting original creations. Many are just outright lying. One list credits Sarah Boone, a female black, with the invention of the ironing board in 1892. White people were ironing clothes on ironing boards long before 1892. The list goes on and on! It is all a fabrication a black fantasy! Just google it!

Dear Sue - Thanks for the list from your "black studies" class. You forgot to mention a few items that "Professor Leonard Jeffries" taught at CCNY some years ago in his black studies course in New York City; the airplane first made out of bamboo and flown around ancient Egypt (Gee, Egyptologists tell us they were in fact migrated Persians - i.e. the Hamitic branch of the Caucasian race). Also that a Dr. Haku invented the white race in a test tube under a palm tree six thousand years ago. If you add those two tidbits to your list you could pass his course and get three credits through the mail. Somehow when I am using a cell phone that incorporates quantum physics and a computer it's a little difficult to regard peanut butter as an "invention". The other questionable items on your list are so dependent on pre-existing white technology (e.g. electricity, metal, a written language, plastic etc) and the education in western knowledge via the school system that it's hard to fathom what you mean when you say "blacks invented" them.

The list of 40 black inventions is mostly wrong. I looked up about 10 of the bottom ones & the things on the list was invented mostly by Europeans years before the names & years on the list. The almanac was the one most off it's been around since the 1300's.

Concerned Memphian- I am a reverse "Damn Yankee," in that I lived in Memphis for a decade and came back north. I have encountered more racism in New England than I ever experienced down South. I read Joel Chandler Harris as a young boy. I saw these as modern day Aesop's fables. I interpreted these stories as showing how clever African Americans were. To me, Brer Rabbit was the African American who could outthink and outmaneuver Brer Bear, whom I viewed as a brutal redneck, and Brer Fox, whom I viewed as the Old Southern Gentry.
Anything can be viewed as racist. I once convinced someone that the Ant and the Aardvark cartoon was anti-Semitic because the aardvark was blue (one of the colors of the Israeli flag) and had a big nose. In no time at all, there were people who took up the cause.
My best advice is to ignore these people. There are many biracial relationships including one that produced our current president. Besides, all human beings originated from Africa so we are all descended from Africans who likely had pigmented skin. Sooner or later science will win out over stupidity, even if it takes another 10,000 years.
I don't see why they had to publicize it. If it was at a private home and there were certain invitees; why not just send invitations to them or phone them. At a private home one can do as one chooses as to invitations and Minnie's chocolate Pie.

on a more serious note (since some of the comments about "racial superiority" are nothing but masturbatory fantasies), the actual reason for racism is deeply rooted in instincts that have been with us since our ancestors were nothing but a bunch of plains-dwelling apes (and probably further than that). we have an instinctive distrust for "outsiders" and tendency to trust "insiders" within our "tribe" or "troop". (those that think we are so far above apes are also delusional, our only real advantage is that we are better at making pretty toys and justifying why it is ok to kill the "outsiders").

Perhaps if someone dropped you off in the African bush amongst a tribe that has never seen a white man and you had to live your life with them at their level you would discover that "superiority" of one group/race/culture over another is hardly a "fantasy". You would have fire and simple weapons (non metal) and that's about it. No flights with a movie, supermarkets, hospitals or dentists, no stove or freezer. No TV, bed, vaccines, electricity or anything that runs on it. No computers or written language. Given that it was a graduate student hosting this shindig, I am inclined to believe that she was conducting an experiment that had to do with her thesis. But we will never know because the powers that be wanted to hollar "racist" before finding out what was actually behind the whole incident. Yes, higher education is alive and well except among those who profess it. However, what happened as a result of her email may be exactly what the student needed for inclusion in her thesis. We may never know.

One of the reasons there are so many poor blacks in this country is pure and simple racism. I see it every day... just look at many of the comments about our President in various news blogs. I also agree that it seems only white people can be racist; I am white and I feel racism towards me from minorities quite often in my business... I try to just ignore it. But I also believe there is MORE racism towards the blacks and latinos in our country.... part of our big problem! I wish people could just get along and leave the past in the past.

Racism is now just a blanket term to describe anything that liberals (of any race, color or creed) do not think should be tolerated. If you, as a hiring manager, employ a "white" individual when there was a single minority applicant, you are "racist"! Essentially, the English Department wants to control who can assemble at a private home.
Rutgers is a public University - so it may be a violation of civil rights by a Gov't official to block or otherwise penalize a legal activity of assembly.
You have an absolute right to be a racist, an atheist, or a homosexual in the US. If the campus atheists want to have a atheist only event at one of their homes, the University has no business blocking that because it discriminates against theists.

I don't know that you and I would agree politically or not about a whole range of issues but I do sense that you are as disappointed as I am that our institutions of "higher learning" are no longer such. Anyone, or anything, which questions the "intellectual" orthodoxy must be destroyed, and the racial orthodoxy today on campus is that whites are inherently racist and so anything white-centric must be racist. No questions, no effort to see reason, just condemn and punish. And then act pious about their own motives.

These school districts need the best teachers, not the worst. Because they are poor, they have to live in these "poor" school districts... they cannot afford the housing where the "intelligent white people" live. And because there is no money in the poor school districts, there is little improvement for these schools. Intelligence is learned in part by your environment. If you would bother to read the book, you would see what Machinehead's post is referring to, and it reveals that the amount of money the school district gets is independent of the test scores. In fact, there are many inner city schools that get MORE money per student than suburban schools, but always with the same average test score differences.
It is not racist to state the obvious and measured differences in intellect by race. You may not LIKE it, but it's true, so get over it.

If you suppress people, ensure the schools are poorly funded, and make it seem like a favour to get good jobs, then you will always have a convenient 'Bell Curve' to justify racist beliefs.
In places like the Caribbean, schools are not funded according to taxes paid, zoning etc. etc. They all are funded equally by Governments and practically decimate that BC, because some of those same Black students, free from all the built-in barriers, come to American universities and top the classes and get scholarships after one semester, going on to be hired by big corporations back at home and in the US.
You should travel outside of America and see how other Black people live; those of you who do are always surprised.

Still, folks like you complain about "supression" and "underfunding"! Wake up!

College campuses have been defended as "Free Speech Sites" where anyone can say anything about whoever they wish (if they are Black) unless of course you are not of the Black Race. Those that are Caucasian, European, Middle Eastern or from an Asian country are "hung" from flag poles if they use "hate filled racist language". Black groups regularly hold events on college campus's and exclude those that are not Black, and there is no cries of "racist". Black people tend to be the most "Racist" people in America today.

WMG - blacks in this country suffered from government mandated discrimination until the late 60's. You can't just climb out of the hole that puts you in without help. And since it also so happens that it was after blacks gained civil rights that government aid started getting cut, hispanics started arriving and taking jobs that once belonged to blacks and asians, and higher education became unaffordable, it seems like it just MIGHT be necessary for organizations to help bring them up in the world, and to make sure they maintain the rights they fought for.
There is a reason for those organizations, and that reason will eventually benefit all of society - not just blacks. Suck it up, and find something more relevant or productive to whine about.

My daughter received a secret Santa gift from "someone" in her dance team. The assignment was to make a home-made gift and write several compliments to the recipient. My daughter was complimented on her dancing while being white as if whites cannot often dance well. Now should I go to the school and make a big deal out of this racist remark from her black teammate? No, I don't think so. I believe the main reason racism still exists amongst all races is because the media constantly reminds us of it on a daily basis. While Rutgers is generally considered to be an outstanding school, it sounds like they might be setting graduate school admission standards a little low. This type of activity suggests little intelligence or common sense. Better screen those applicants a little better, Rutgers!
Dan - I'm so sick of hearing/reading this argument. There aren't even enough blacks in this country to take that much away from whites, much less enough of them in college. Many of them live in awful neighborhoods, with awful schools, few resources, and they often don't even make it through high school, and if they do make it through, their subpar school has not prepared them for college, so they also have high college drop-out rates.
Besides, any white person that's not too racist to do so can mark off "african-american" on their forms. The school doesn't go to your house and check you out, and they can't prove you're not part black.
Go to schools and ask whites and asians, and while you're there ... why don't you count how many blacks you see? And then why don't you see how crowded classes are, how long waitlists are, etc.? The colleges are overcrowded and they're NOT overcrowded with blacks. Your argument is lame because it ignores statistics and lacks reason.
Dan--universities like to have a diverse student population. Why? Because a college that is primarily "white" is going to be a magnet for the KKK types (trust me, I was at one at one time), and it will kick out students who (like this one) are really stupid about what they say/do. This is a problem for the corporations that hire them--the college that I went to had a department that was basically being boycotted by the major corporations that hired its graduates because it had gotten a reputation for graduating people who were still living in the 1950s in terms of what they thought that they could get away with in a work environment and who were causing lawsuits that the corporation had to handle.
The department had to increase its representation of certain groups, and to do something about the racism of its students (not to change their minds, but to teach them to curb their behaviors) in order to end the boycott.
So, yes, there are some schools that have such a bad reputation that they have to openly court certain people (it is not always black people--it varies depending on the location--obviously in majority black areas like Atlanta the issue is different) in order to try and get a diverse population.
It is Asian people who suffer the most--their scores have to be much higher than everyone else's. The white females also have to have very high scores indeed. Among the lowest scores accepted are those of Hispanics, African Americans and . . . white males.
In fact, the standards for white males have been dropping, and dropping, and dropping to the point where they are ridiculous at some schools. While there are schools that white males still like (Harvard, Yale, etc.), those appeal to the elite of our society. Middle class and lower white males are so under-represented at some colleges that the admissions people are madly courting white males.
So, yeah--diversity is what the universities are concerned with, because the people who buy their "product" want that product to come from a diverse environment. But, no, it isn't that the black people are getting allowed in though they aren't qualified. Any group that is under-represented--these days, especially white males--has an easier time getting admitted. Have a great day.

Overachievers seem to feel they are superior to others. They just pick a group or groups of people and hate them so as to separate themselves. Some people even feel superior for not being racist. Maybe if we didn't practice affirmative action people would get over racism. I also think some successful black entertainers perpetuate stereotypes by priding themselves on being poor role models who can't, or more likely choose not to, speak proper english because it isn't socially acceptable to their target audience. It's a lot like what country musicians do. You know these guys aren't dumb but they make an effort to sound that way to appear cool. The same people that claim to be working to advance their cultures are writing songs which glorify crime, and sexism. They don't care about anything but money. I do find it sort of annoying that it is politically correct to have a BET but not a WET, but I don't think either is a good idea. One of those two wrongs don't make a right situations.

Dear PenPusherr - You are living in an alternate Universe. I attended several universities. One was NYU in 1969. Way back then blacks were flooding in and not remotely unqualified. Additionally they were not paying! One black in my class came out of the financial aid office looking baffled. "They just gave me a scholarship", he said. "What scholarship?, I asked. "It's called the Martin Luther King scholarship, he said. I was very curious because I couldn't afford one years tuition without huge loans and my mother taking a job requiring bus and subway everyday. So I asked, "Is it means-tested". "NO". "Did you ask for it?" NO. "Did you fill out any forms?" NO. "Did you apply for it?" NO. It turned out the university was not leaving a paper trail. Blacks were simply given tuition waivers. Whites had to pay - and through the nose and take out loans that would burden them for years, if not decades. Five years later I went to a college on Long Island. Not remotely in the same class academically but cheaper. I couldn't afford NYU and for one term at this college I took on loans and had to hitch several hours a day because the loan did not cover 100% of the tuition. So I put the transportation allowance toward tuition by hitch-hiking. Today that campus is nearly all black. The surrounding area is not black so the school is attracting them from all over. I wondered how they could afford it as I couldn't. Saying this out loud to my girlfriend, someone on the staff motioned me over and told me "They're not paying". More subterfuge resulting in exorbitant fees leveledon whites to make up for those not paying. But they have ways of making people think they are being treated the same as whites. They're not. The colleges in their quest for racial "diveristy" have divested themselves of their own acadmeic standards. You can go almost anywhere in the U.S. today and talk to semi-illiterate people who hold degrees. Standards were jettisoned in high schools to bring up the graduation rates and the lower grades used "social promotion". Race has destroyed the level of education in the U.S. except for pockets here and there (MIT and some others). When this insanity wears off, it will take a long time to bring America back to what it was, though most feel it is now too far gone. However, Libs feel good about themselves. That's the important thing.

Giving preferential treatment in education or employment to any group of people based on their race, gender, religion or anything other than their ability ought to be illegal. "The Bell Curve" by an MIT and a Harvard professor points out that "leveling the playing field" despite the Left's call for it, is exactly what they don't want. Because unless the game is rigged in some way (sports being the one exception), whites pull ahead. In most fields, way ahead. A level playing field might sound good to blacks and Leftists but wherever it's been tried it produces the opposite effect. Whites excel. Blacks fall behind. That is equal opportunity. But the result is winners and losers. And the better horses will always take the lead. The double standard he is referring to is the one that exist for every other race but the Caucasian race. We have Black History Month and a month for the Latino population but if a group wanted to lobby for a month of white history honoring great Americans who were white, not KKK members or white supremacists, the minorities would piss and moan that they are being racist and it shouldn't be permitted. The college enrollment is a great one too. On the news a while back was a group that started a scholarship solely for the Caucasian ethnicity only and every other ethnicity was up in arms calling the group racist. There are scholarships for other ethnicities that only exist to fund those specific ethnicities. Until these minorities groups quit their own segregation techniques, racism will continue to exist. They also need to drop the hyphenated Something-American if they want to be American. You are either American or not and need to realize that people will take offense to you when you continue this double standard that exists in nearly every aspect of life, but the government and businesses continue to do nothing about.
This whining by some about "they can have all black this or that but I can't have an all white this or that" ignores the fact that for many, many years, this AND that were ALL all-white. People who accept the "comic" lazy and wily black stereotypes (in this case, they are animal substitutes--but they are still black stereotypes) who exist mostly to make white people laugh also don't get why it is racist.
Such people also don't tend to "get" Native American stereotypes with the wise Indian man who guides the young white male along a path to adulthood or the handsome Indian brave on horseback who sweeps the white girl off her feet. It is instructive for such people to read works by actual Native Americans--like Sherman Alexie--which have no qualms about making it clear that these stereotypes aren't particularly pleasant.
I like the songs, myself, and would really like to see the film remade by an African American director/producer (or at least by someone with some sensitivity to the stereotypes). I expect that it would have a very different "feel" to it--much more pointed and a lot more critical of those who accept the stereotypes . . . rather like the stories were originally intended.
The stories that we find in "Uncle Remus" were originally rather like Reynard the Fox (and might actually have their roots in such stories)--these stories were deeply critical of the religious establishment and the aristocrats that oppressed the peasants. Yes, they can be sanitized and have their caustic edge taken out--turned into pablum for children. But, the original is cutting. The original stories that informed Uncle Remus were similarly biting, cutting, and anti-racist.
By making the characters warm and fuzzy, harmless and comic, the bite is taken out and the characters are made fun of rather than the characters undercutting the (at that time, oppressive white) society from which they emerged. It would be fun to see the bite put back into them. Have a great day.

Having an email account as an employee of a public university is a completely different thing than having a gmail account. (And yes, that graduate student is an employee.) It's much more like having an email account through the company you work for. We are only supposed to use our accounts for work-related matters. We are seen as representatives of our university when we use this account. And what's more, because we're public employees, our email can be requested under the Freedom of Information Act. You can't say the same about your gmail. Of course, in practice, most university employees do use their email for personal activity all the time. But that doesn't mean it's a smart thing to be as inflammatory and insensitive as this student was, on her public email.
But it's OK for blacks to call whites anything they want and to discriminate against us every chance they get. Hmmmm. I just recently heard about a dating website called www.blackpeoplemeet.com. Not only do they have "quotas"; when I attended Rutgers "Newark Campus" during the Vietnam era they were REQUIRED by our government to PASS a certain percent of BLACK students in spite of their qualifications. My college mentor, whose husband taught at the "College of Medicine and Dentistry" located directly behind Rutgers Newark campus further informed me; that once these unqualified "token black students" were admitted to the medical school, the school HAD to pass a certain percent of them, whether they were qualified or not!

Our government mandates that all black applicants get EXTRA credit whenever they take a entrance or job qualification exam.
It's like our government acknowledging the fact that black people are "less intelligent" and need a handicap to level the playing field.

I am a graduate student employed with the Affirmative Action/Inclusion department at a northern university. I believed in Affirmative Action until two years ago when I took the position. Here are the facts: black students are accepted with SIGNIFICANTLY lower test scores/ grades than white students. If black students are failing or performing poorly in their classes, their grades are raised, often by two full letter grades. Three semesters ago one black male student had his score raised from a D- to a B even though he had been arrested half way through the semester and had not attended classes since. The "numbers" are reworked to show higher black student success rates than exist. Scholarships and special funding programs abound for these students. For the record, I am a first generation, lower class white female, and I have taken out $50,000 in student loans because I do not qualify for scholarships, despite my 4.0 (!) GPA. Why? White females are the majority at my university. Additionally, the Black Student Club (there is no white student club, btw) hosts a Black History Month program every year. I have no issue with that, but it is mostly white students and faculty who organize and write the program, which is then credited to the club. The experience has left me totally disillusioned. That said, I don't think the language used in the email in this story is appropriate, but I suspect it is part of an experiment for the class. Also, it is a lot LESS offensive and racist than the hip-hop and rap lyrics played on mainstream radio.

I'm not racist nor do I condone racism as it is nothing more than a tool of the ignorant but I have every reason to believe that if this were blacks-only or Latinos-only or whatever have you, not a peep would have been made over this ordeal.
But it is okay to have racist events when the participants are black ie... the NAACP Awards, BET, etc. Screw them, I never invite them to anything I do and never will. I want them around me as much as they want me around them.

There will never be true equality between the races in America until all cultures/ethnicities change their emphasis from embracing their subculture, (whether it be white, black, Hispanic, or anything else) and instead focus on adopting the "American culture"...whatever that is. And that's the problem: This country was formed as a melting pot of other cultures, but some (maybe most?) cultures have lagged behind assimiliating into a culture that is greater than the individual cultures of which it's composed.
By its very name, the NAACP promotes racism...the promoting of one race over another. It is no more appropriate than an NAAWP or NAALP would be.

The reason those black colleges were created was because at the time they were not allowed to go to "white" schools.

None of these students have ever sat at the back of the bus either. There are colleges for blacks, television for blacks, there is a black caucus, NAACP, they get preference points when going for government jobs. I personally didn't get a job after testing number 1. The second runner up was black and finished 1 point higher than I did because of his preference points for being minority. Stop preaching equality as long as it is equality for blacks. I deserved the job and was discriminated against due to color of my skin. Don't tell me that it's just an insult. I am a paramedic, and now you have the second best candidate responding to your home. Don't tell me whites have never been discriminated against in this country. I have been told flat out I wouldn't be hired for a job because I was not hispanic even though I was the better candidate. I had family that couldn't get jobs because they had German accents when they spoke.
While whites may out number Blacks and Hispanics for the moment that is not true for the whole country. I know areas where the hispanic and black races outnumber the white population 2 or 3 to 1 and yet affirmative action laws don't apply equally in those areas for white people.
That is why Affirmative Action doesn't work any longer.
I feel for the wrongs done to the black people as a whole but here is a reality to consider. I didn't do it to them and no one in my family was even in this country at the time it was done to them so tell me, Why am I and my children having to pay for those wrongs when we didn't have anything to do with it.
My family came here after WWII. My Grandfather was given a choice in Germany, get drafted or get shot. When he finally made it to America with my father and his brothers they were treated worse than the colored families. They weren't welcome in white society or black neighborhoods. They faced all of that to make a better life for their children and grand children just as I do for my children and grand children. Don't tell me about racism, my family has dealt with it from both sides. We've been blamed for it and punished for it and been on the receiving end of it and never had anything to do with what happened before, during or immediately after the civil war.
I have never held the Race or Sex of anyone against them when interviewing for job positions. I don't even look at that part of the applications when reviewing applications for candidates. They get the job based on qualifications and how they interview and those should be the only determining factors and to be honest I am tired of people pulling that discrimination card out every time they don't get a job or something doesn't go their way.
My ancestors, were, in fact, discriminated against. I have strong Irish blood, and the Irish were often denied jobs and opportunities in America because of where they came from. I don't let the fact that my ancestors weren't treated fairly chap my hide today. The past is the past, and let's thank our stars that it IS the past. We can't forget our nation's history, but blacks haven't been forced by law to sit in the back of a bus for 50 years. Let's look forward and try to improve our future instead of fixing something that can't be fixed.

You need to go back and check a census report or two! An define what you deem as "white". According to the 2010 report 72.4% of the United States is "white".
