LIVINGSTON, Tenn. -- A first-year teacher from Overton County may lose his job after writing the word "stupid" across a student’s forehead with permanent marker, a district official told WSMV-TV in Nashville.
The math teacher has been suspended indefinitely, Matt Eldridge, director of the Overton County Schools, told the NBC television station.
"We're here to help the children and not to hurt them," Eldridge said, adding "One word can break a child. I mean, I've got three children. I wouldn't want it done to mine."

The incident happened last week at Allons Elementary, where a student asked a question and the teacher responded by writing on the child’s forehead in front of his classmates, Eldridge told the TV station. The teacher also wrote the word "stupid" backward on the student's forehead, so he'd be able to read it when he saw himself in the mirror, he said.
"The teacher said, 'I was trying to joke with him,' and of course, I said, 'That’s not the way you joke with anyone,'" Eldridge said.
Allons Elementary is a K-8 school with a few hundred students just outside Livingston.
"It's kind of one of those mistakes that's hard to correct," Eldridge said.

This teacher is going to catch hell for a joke gone bad.
Should've wrote it on his own forehead
Stupid teacher.
Poor kid.
If a teacher had done that to my child, I would have been in jail by nightfall.
Sappy- That was no joke to a child or an adult !!!!!!
FIRE HIM !!!!
Stupid doesn't come off, you don't need a permanent marker.
Maybe the kid's forehead was too small for the instructor to write: "special needs"
When I was a fourth grader at Phantom Lake Elementary School in Bellevue, Washington (in 1975-76), I had a teacher who nicknamed all of his students, and he frequently used those nicknames during class, especially P.E.. I was his only black student, and had proved myself to be one of his brightest.
He nicknamed the other students according to weird, querky behaviors, their family names or other cute aspects about them. For example, he affectionately called Susan Swanson "chicken dinner" because of the Swanson frozen foods company. As stated before, all of the other nicknames were innocuous.
His assignment of my nickname was much more sinister; I instinctively knew something was wrong with it but felt powerless as a child to do anything about it. My nickname was the word "stupid" plus my last name, which was a typical English last name (probably inherited from my family's original slave-owner). The other students also began calling me "stupid", and my schoolwork began to suffer, not because I was incapable of performing well (my mother had previously refused my prior school's request to advance me two grades), but because I suddenly hated school.
Under the cover of nicknaming all of his students, this teacher had found a way to covertly attack his only 9-year-old black student daily (a student who did nothing to deserve it), without any of the other white students suspecting anything to be wrong. Curiously, I noticed that he would drop the word "stupid" and only use my last name when other adults were around to observe our P.E. sessions. In addition, he put his hands on me, physically shaking, snatching and hitting me for any minor misbehavior - such as going to the restroom without permission, and he always did so in the presence of my classmates.
I still live with that hurt to this day, even though I attended one of the top Jesuit high schools in the country and later graduated with honors from a top university (making the dean's list nine times, among many other academic honors). I am now planning to return to school to pursue a law degree and have gained admission to some of the nation's top law schools.
Today, a student in my position would probably file a multimillion dollar lawsuit against the school district (aside from the teacher's attacks, teachers failed to protect me from racist bullying by white students). I wish people had been more aware of the evil things teachers and students did to some kids.
Should write "Unable to teach" on the teachers forehead.
If your child wasn't stupid, you wouldn't have to worry about it. Stupid children come from stupid parents. Don't blame the teacher. Not all children are "winners." Not all children are "special." Neither are adults. Teach, as parents, your own kids to do the best they can and if they still fail and lose, that's the end of it. Your children don't deserve being treated like their princes or princesses. They get treated just the way they are. Teachers have two-dozen kids in their elementary classrooms to educate. Your kid isn't the only one. If you think that, then take your kid out and homeschool it, and end up with whatever you get. So get over it, parents. Whether or not our kid was born, the sun still rises and sets. Your kid, statistically, will make no difference to this world. You make think it's the best major household appliance you ever got to make you happy, but no one else does. That's reality. Deal with it.
Sooooooo Still on unemployment Jer?
Jerry...seriously? True, some are more intelligent than others, but to actually call a child that is not necessary, no matter difficult it may be for he or she to learn.
You do that to your own kids?
Pathetic.
Her punishment should be to tatoo "STUPID" on her forehead in huge letters and then take her certificate to teach. Kick her out on her butt.
Stupid is as stupid does. Or 'did' in this case.
I will make the same comment I make on every single article here on the public school system: For the most part, the inmates are running the asylum.
This country is truly going to hell. Stock your armories, munitions and food.
Maybe the kid deserved it, you dont think there are some kids who are just plain stupid?
Is the problem he wrote it, or is it because they don't want him telling the kid the truth and hurting his feelings in this day of touchy feely crap?
@Jerry-1903677 - What does your rant have to do with the abuse of a child?
Don't listen to him, Jerry. I think your post does a remarkable job of proving your point that not everyone is smart, or a "winner". I don't blame you at all for being bitter that the school system failed you so badly. I take it that since you feel so strongly about this, you must painstakingly scrawl a label on your own forehead every morning after your first alcoholic beverage to help the rest of us better understand your abilities.
Well done, buddy!
Ernie, don't be an ass.
Nope, never have been, Chef. Still using taxpayer dollars to take care of your kids, Chef?
Sarcasm, satire, or sarcastic satire?
If someone had ever done that to one of my daughters he sure would be hurting. You don't call kids names like that let alone write it on them. I would of put a beating on him like he had never seen. He needs a new profession where he works by himself away from people.
What's pathetic is that you think your kids are the ones and only ones on the face of the Earth. The only kids who are special are those with developmental or cognitive disabilities. The rest are just regular and there's nothing "special" about them, including yours. Teach them to do the best in what they can do, and accept the fact that they will never achieve in everything. In most things, they will never be winners. Too bad for them. And too bad for you that you need to use your kids to make yourself feel "special."
K.J. - If you don't think that type of behavior crossed the line, then there's something wrong with you.
Stupid shouldn't be in any teachers vocabulary!
William Whitmore....FYI. Teacher is a "he". Not a "she".
evenprettier

Well, thank you, evenprettier! I have two post-graduate degrees (and I didn't have to pay for them - because of my high grade-point average both educational centers not only waved the tuition, but actually paid me to attend) and I'm very successful. Did I excel in every subject in all my schooling? Of course not. Some I barely passed because I was too stupid to understand them, and I was told that by teachers, but I still excelled in what I knew. For that, they encouraged me. I'm grateful that teachers told me I was too stupid in some areas - and was not a "winner" - and that I had talent in others and to hell with kids who didn't have the brains to do what I achieved. Too bad teachers didn't inform you that you could have had the same and made you feel that you were "special" no matter how you always failed in everything. Do you feel "special" now?
Nobody is stupid for asking a question. Stupid is when you know and don't act accordingly OR refuse to know. The kid was ignorant, as we all are, and like any other smart person would do he asked a question in hopes of knowing the answer. The teacher should have been proud the child showed enough interest to ask that question.
What have we learned from the comments here folks? Calling someone stupid is bad. Beating someone up for calling someone else stupid is the height of modern civilization.
"can't stop me"- We can see what chooses you made, keep up the good work.
Alternatively, he could be given a tattoo saying "stupid" on his forehead and be forced to show it at all times unless he wants to give up his teaching license. Now THAT would be brutal.
HOpe the union doesn't decide to defend this idiot! I don't care if the kid isn't the sharpest tool in the shed, you don't do that to kids that age...there is no reason for it! I would have kicked the teacher's butt as well....not that my kid is more special than any others (except to me, of course). Quite frankly, if I saw a teacher do that to any child, I would be right in his/her face!!!!!!!!!!!!
With all the misspelling and poor use of grammar in these comments, most of y'all should have it permanently stamped on your foreheads
Jerry, I understand that not everyone's child is going to be a Rhodes Scholar. However, telling ANY child they are stupid by a professional who is there to teach them is just wrong. I was raised poor. Dirt poor. No one in my family went to college. But when I had a child, who was an average child, I told her every day she could do anything on earth she wanted to do with her life.
Jerry, she was an honor student throughout high school and college. She was the first person in our family to graduate from college. She was also the first person in our family to earn a Master's Degree. She achieved this because we PRAISED and ENCOURAGED her.
Never tell a child they are stupid. It will stay with them for life.
This problem is much more prevalent than one may think. I am 51 years old and remember being called an "idiot" by my kindergarten teacher because I asked a question about the song, "Old Suzanna". If you know the song you know it can be confusing to an intelligent, fact based child. It was another 28 years before I understood the truth about the song while living in the desert state of Arizona and realized she was actually the idiot.
One of my daughters have a piece of @!$%# for a teacher in 4th grade at Ruth Fisher Elementary School in Tonopah, Arizona. He bullied her daily. I finally called a meeting with the principal of the school and the teacher, Gary Livesay. I told Gary Livesay that if he did not stop bullying my daughter I was going to kick his ass. When the teacher admitted to the principal that he was indeed bullying my daughter because 4 months earlier she said something that angered him, the principal was shocked. Gary Livesay's contract was cancelled at the end of that year. Unfortunately, his abuse sent a child who loved school down a spiral that she never recovered from. One would think that the story would end there, but in her school records Gary Livesay had put a "warning" about my daughter for her future teachers and she was pegged as a "problem child" from there on. She continued to fail at school after that until she finally took her GED and passed it convincingly on her first try.
Gary Livesay of Glendale Arizona, if I ever see you again I intend to kick your ass like I should have done back then. I hope the same thing happens to the piece of garbage from Tennessee, who should have been named in this article so every parent and every school district knows not to hire him.
Wow, some teachers need to submit to IQ tests and psychotherapy. sick, sick, sick. Fellow, preceding posters, some of your commentary was heart wrenching when I read them.
Perhaps, psychopaths are drawn to children, so they can practice their evil and crime on helpless, defenseless and unsuspecting children.
Parents, teach your children to share their lives with you. So, you can sue an abusive teacher.
he did it with a permanent marker...it'll never come off...oh no...you can't fix stupid...
Imatthebeach: It is fast becoming "Idiocracy" in the USA. Watch the movie...we are truly not far away. Stockpile, and have an escape plan.
I taught elementary for 11 years, and can tell you that there's not a teacher in this country who hasn't been tempted to do what that teacher did, but that's no excuse. I'm amazed that things like this don't happen more often. For all the people out there who say that you can't get rid of bad teachers. This is proof that you can. Otherwise, you'd see this kind of thing happening every day. Far too many students today are rude and unwilling to follow directions and more interested in being difficult than in learning, and their parents are worse. This kid is not stupid, but he probably knows how to play the system. I doubt he cares what this teacher thinks about him. This may be this teacher's first mistake, but it will probably be his last. How many strikes has the student had?
Someone needs to write "STUPID" across Jerry's forehead! I'm sure Georgia Peach understands her kid isn't the only kid in the classroom, but regardless of a child's intellegence level they should NOT be called stupid! (Especially just for asking a question). This was a thoughtless act by a thoughtless individual who should not be allowed to teach!
To Fred4Congress, I have to say that in my time teaching, I ran across more parents who were bullies than teachers. There are two sides to every story and from the tone of your comment, my guess is that you were the bully. I certainly hope that this teacher reads your comment and sues you for liable. It's people like you who make teaching impossible. If this teacher was actually a bully, then I'm glad that he's not teaching, but it's more likely that you are lying through your teeth.
"I have two post-graduate degrees (and I didn't have to pay for them - because of my high grade-point average both educational centers not only waved the tuition, but actually paid me to attend) and I'm very successful. Did I excel in every subject in all my schooling?"
You may have learned many things in school Jerry, but wisdom and humanity wasn't part of it!
can't stop me stated: "Some kids are just plain stupid. Everybody is not equal. You were created equal but everybodies life is not equal. It all depends on the chooses you make in life."
And you call some kids stupid, then use the word "chooses"? Priceless.
@james-4018786
No, I don't think he's lying. My child was similarly "labeled" by a teacher in the !st Grade! It was several years before I found out about it, and quite by accident. It IS done by teachers but should not be allowed.
Has anyone else's child been "labeled" as stupid or problematic?
I concur with other posters that feel this teacher should find another vocation and stay away from children!
Am I the only one here mildly disturbed by the fact most of these posts are saying they'd beat the guy within the inch of his life or get thrown in jail for the things they'd do to him? I mean honestly, it sounds more like he should write stupid on YOUR forehead. I do believe he may have gone a bit too far with writing Stupid on his forehead, but if you're thinking of firing him, or hurting the guy, I really think you should pull your kid out of school and take to home schooling.
The fact of the matter is, public schools are pretty pitiful, and they have a hard enough time getting teachers to come into the fold, what with Parents suing and raging and blaming over the littlest things. I know several people that wanted to be teachers, but unfortunately these people see the pay, benefits (or lack thereof), and the overly entitled nature of parents (and what they hand down to their bratty kids), and these people who would love to teach and genuinely enjoy it just see no future in it.
I doubt anyone on this board has ever been a teacher, and teachers have it rough. They have hundreds of kids all hoped up on sugar and feeling like they're special little snowflakes, and if they do any disciplinary action whatsoever, lawsuit or firing. No wonder the teachers just don't give a damn, they have people like you "fine" folks threatening bodily harm over stupid things like this.
What do think the chances of this poor kid ever asking a question in math class again? This a$$hole should be barred from the teaching profession for life.
James stated: "To Fred4Congress, I have to say that in my time teaching, I ran across more parents who were bullies than teachers. There are two sides to every story and from the tone of your comment, my guess is that you were the bully. I certainly hope that this teacher reads your comment and sues you for liable. It's people like you who make teaching impossible. If this teacher was actually a bully, then I'm glad that he's not teaching, but it's more likely that you are lying through your teeth."
Well James, after reading your response to Fred, all I can say is, that I hope that your are not teaching anymore. Sure, there are some parents who may be bullies, but Fred's comment about that teacher doesn't make him a bully at all. He had every right to be pissed at that teacher for putting his daughter through the things that he did. Then you go on wishing that guy would sue him? For what? Because Fred is pissed at him for putting his daughter through hell in school? Why would people like Fred make teaching impossible James? Because he, like many others are sick and tired of some teachers doing things like this, and are not going to tolerate it anymore? Ask yourself as a teacher, what it is you are prepping our children for in this world. Your prepping them for a life of government servitude James. Your prepping them for those 8-16 hour days, 5-6 day work weeks, for 50-60 years of giving half of their pay to a government that only cares about them, as long as they work and keep the tax money rolling in.
You also called Fred a liar? Try calling someone a liar to their face James, and not over the Internet, and you will soon learn that it's not about that person being a bully, but you being a total North bound end of a South bound mule.
Feel free to move into your bunker at any time. I doubt you'll be missed.
Only In America, listen douchebag, I could care less what a right wing red neck like you thinks. No, I don't teach anymore. I got sick of dealing with A-hole parents who never supported teachers ( kind of like your worthless rear ). I never had any students that I didn't like, but they learned to be rude and difficult from their parents. I went into the private sector and earned twice as much with much less work. Parents stopped supporting teachers years ago, and yes that makes teaching nearly impossible. I had a student one year who didn't turn in her homework. I called her mom and told her I needed that homework to be able to give a decent grade. The child lied and said that she'd given me the homework. The mother totally took her 9 year old daughter's word over mine ... that is, until she found it a month later, stuffed behind the drier in their house. To her credit, she came in and apologized and confronted her daughter in class. Most teachers work themselves to the bone because they care about their students. I'm sure there are some bad teachers, but I can only speak from experience. Most teachers teach because they love children. There are methods in place to deal with bad teachers. When parents treat teachers with distrust ( and many even treat knowledge like it's a bad or elite thing ), it undermines the teacher, the classroom, and the child's education. I'm glad not to be teaching anymore. I miss the students but not the parents.
Didn't comedian Bill Engvall make an entire career out of this? "Here's your sign", indeed.
Oh, and Only In America, you say that I'm "being a total North bound end of a South bound mule." Your metaphor is a geographically incorrect, unless you're dissecting the mule. The whole mule is either North bound or South bound. You might want to say the North facing end of a South bound mule.
Jerry, I have bad news for you. Because you have the capacity to learn, two post graduate degrees, those teachers that said you were stupid, if they possessed the quality of teaching, could have taught you those subjects. You could have been an astronaut buddy. Instead you bought into the theory you were not smart at math but good in English. You were stereotyped and because of the psychological abuse, you capitulated. And now, you are a bitter person. As people get older they tend to go towards generosity or stagnation. I fear the latter for you.
I am stunned. Teachers reporting on this, who agree to writing stupid on any child's head. If a teacher is thinking that any child is stupid, defeats the entire purpose of educating a child.
Sometimes hidden amongst all the qualifiers of human intelligence are secrets of a really superlative mind. I was exceedingly quiet, secretive and an introvert. I didn't stand out for anyone to shout, heay; however, I excelled on a human intelligent testing at age 15. I could have had written on my forehead, the forever lasting moniker, stupid -- because I was exceedingly -- different!
The highly intelligent child is quiet, introverted, secretive and at lost as to all the reasons he is so utterly different. Tragically, teachers are not IQ tests. The real smarters are also frequently deemed, duh, duh, stupid.
When Einstein was in high school, his Greek teacher told him, he would never amount to anything.
I can think of a few things I'd like to write on this "teacher's" forehead but I'm a lady.
Wow, Ivan Renko - I am so sorry that you suffered through such an awful experience and teacher in 4th grade. But you can stand proud because you have not only overcome, but have far outshone the teacher and I'm sure many of your fellow students. I hope that if you haven't already, you will someday be able to heal and not carry the burden of their hate, cruelty, ignorance and racism. Be free of it and continue to soar.
Normally I am a great defender for teachers and teaching in general. They need to be paid better.
HOWEVER.....
Belittling a child in front of his classmates just because he does not excel in one subject is EXTREMELY wrong. This teacher, needs an alert on their license to teach. This child has now been scarred emotionally. A teacher has NO RIGHT to belittle a child. Once, warning. Twice, suspension for a year without pay. Third time, lost license.
When I was growing up my father was working his ass off to support his family and paid little attention to my education other than what he heard from us at the dinner table. He was, however, self employed and willing to come to school to deal with any severe problem that might arise. He knew my brother and I were not little angels and would strongly support a teacher if the situation called for it.If this had happened to me or my brother though, the next parent-teacher night would have resembled a MMA cage fight.
"Your children don't deserve being treated like their princes or princesses." - Jerry-1903677
Hey Jerry, maybe in the pursuit of those degrees you should have taken a class in grammar. I hate to do this, but I can't stand someone talking down to others while they're (not their) making mistakes any fifth grade student should be able to avoid.
Wrong Jerry. Children should be treated like princes and princesses. Even when they do not behave in such manner. You'll be a father someday and will see, know and feel better.
"There can be no keener revelation of a society's soul than the way in which it treats its children." - Nelson Mandela
BTW - Calling a child stupid in front of his peers is child abuse. Abusive in language and in behavior. Emotionally damaging.
After reading your comment I truly must disagree with you. EVERY child is special. Including yours. If I ever meet any of your children I will treat them special as they deserve to be. Independent of your thought process.
James, why do I get the impression you are full of anger towards parents and students ? My in-law is a teacher and has told me some horrendous things a teacher she teaches with does. Oh, but all teachers are above reproach and there are so many bad students and parents. Actually, that is where every single one of our problems lie (with the parents and students). Excuse any grammar errors . I was taught in the public school system, so obviously the mistakes mean that I am stupid. We also know that there never was such a thing as rubber rooms for teachers. All teachers are wonderful.
Reading many of the comments in here I no longer wonder where the bullies in our schools learn to be bullies. It comes from parents like those who sport this teacher or say kids are stupid.
It is NEVER EVER acceptable for any adult to humiliate a child in public or in private. THose early years are where a kid builds self esteem. once destroyed it has a hard time ever being re-built.
It was done to me by an Art Class teacher who told the class in reference to a work I was doing that was simply not coming together, I was frustrated by it, but her concept was to announce to the class--"If you threw up on it, it would be finished". I have never forgotten that moment30+ years ago. I got up out of my seat and left the class, her calling to me asking where I thought I was going. I went out front of the school and waited for class to be over. I told my mom when she picked me up, I don't know what they did but I was treated much better after that by the ego maniac who taught the class (A schlock artist who painted the same tourist drivel over and over) I stopped painting for years, later I began to create some again, I sold a number or my works and have some level of respect in the NY art Scene. All she did was paint the same tourist souveniers the rest of her life. I heard once she took credit for being 'my teacher' I sent her a letter making sure she knew she taught me nothing, not technique, not appreciation, zilch. Except she did teach me how not to act. Her name was Virginia Bolton. Lets give her credit!
There are no 'stupid' questions
I hate to admit it, but I totally agree with Jerry. If a child is stupid, that child should be tattooed with derogatory words on his skin, and publicly whipped for each stupid act that child commits. Anyone in the special olympics should probably be paraded about in the public square, while the entire community can scream and hurl insults at the retards.
This was sarcasm. I actually don't want Jerry to be publicly whipped. :)
you had my eyes misting up until you threw this in (probably inherited from my family's original slave-owner)
I am not condoning your teacher or the teacher in question, so don't misunderstand. I was called fatty fatty 2X4 and I wasn't even fat! I just had ( and still do ) a chubby face. Yes names hurt, and the names often hurt for a lifetime.
This teacher and the school board will probably be disciplined in court and the media, I am sure he is going to feel the sting of regret for a very long time.
He was writing it on the wrong forehead. I bet she's feeling pretty stupid now!
And this message board reveals the true calamity in America today- Sociopaths everywhere.
A teacher should no more label a child than punch him in the face. What happened here was nothing less than assault.
james, not taking sides in your argument, but rednecks are like any other breed. There are good ones and bad ones so please don't lump us all into the stereotype, okay? Most rednecks you meet would rather buy you a beer and take you fishing than fight with ya.
Peace, James, and Merry Christmas
("Ernie-859983 Maybe the kid deserved it, you dont think there are some kids who are just plain stupid?")
And some of them grow up to post on internet comment boards. Maybe not you but some. Toeach his own. Freedom of speech and opinion. I may not agree or like it but it is still yours and my right period. ROFLMFAO
James...I'm not sure if I am amused or disgusted. You speak of being a teacher and even go on to "correct" the geography of others, yet you use "drier" for DRYER and state "elite thing" when should have been stated as an ELITIST thing. Before you spout off, you may want to check your own backyard. Furthermore, calling someone a name such as "douchebag" really cements the fact that you should probably not be teaching anyway.
I 100% understand the plight of teachers nowadays...the pay is horrible and subjection to less than desirable situations is rampant...HOWEVER....if this is your chosen profession, then you take it...warts, feathers and all. It isn't for eveyone, in fact, it takes a very special somebody to take on such a daunting task. You must have patience, compassion and a special tenderness in caring for our future and calling someone "stupid" does not fit into any of the aforementioned qualities.
Sorry,
The issue was not the teacher writing on the student...
The failure was the parents sending their child to PUBLIC SCHOOL.
If the kid was misbehaving there are other things you can do, like making the kid go to the principle's office, having a parent teach conference, detention, other duties assigned, or even suspension.
As far as writing stupid on a kids forehead, that is stupid in itself. And doing this early in elementary school, that is stupid. I could possibly see a joke like this in high school where even the student was actually in on it and agreeable to it. But a kid in elementary or jr high/middle school they are way too young and impressionable. Even if the kid seemed willing to have stupid written on his forehead, soon, the other little kids will all start teasing him. Secondly, all that will do is actually make the kid act in stupid ways, stop doing homework, studying, or even caring what she/he is doing in school. That is not the behavior of a teacher. Time for him to work at wal-mart at midnight shelf stocking. I have to say, even in boot camp in the military, drill instructors are not allowed to do this. It would be huge demerits if they ever did, and the instructor would probably lose a rank in pay and be dismissed from drill instructing-- body art of any kind can't be visible, doing it on the forehead is not acceptable even the military-- so even for you hard apes out there, even in a hard environment this wouldn't be acceptable.
Sweet,
Like you said (and I agree), teachers should be paid better. They are heroes to take on this task. The good they to for society is paramount. Personally, I would pay a teacher the salary of any football player, if I could. The number of lives they affect in their life time are incredible. I truly believe that if the salaries paid to teachers were commensurate with their experience, education and importance of their work, that we would be a much better Nation.
James, all I can about your post is WOW. COH doesn't mean much does it?
Funny thing is I excelled, got several degrees (paid for myself) won several awards in different fields and was only called "stupid, dopey, jerky" by my father. My teachers, although they didn't put dunce caps on anyone, used stigma words all the time. Yet, My friends that went to public schools where results were not as important as "self-esteem" became mediocrities. Aristotle, Plato, Socrates, Isac Newton, Galileo, Einstein, Edison etc etc none of them grew up in a self-esteem culture. Ever since the dumbing down of America children are never called stupid no matter how stupid. They are fed helium to puff themselves up. I can't drive two blocks without seeing some inane bumper-sticker of "MY CHILD IS A SCHOLAR AT DUMB ASS MIDDLE SCHOOL" or something. According to our PC school system every child is a genius and .. wait for it .. gifted. I never received praise deserved or undeserved and found myself to work harder in every situation than my colleagues here and abroad. The fake self-esteem culture has yet to produce anyone of note. (Alright, Lady Gaga). A school where no one is stupid. Soon a gym where no one is out of shape. A hospital where no one is unwell. All a sign of a weak and debilitated society. A PC one, for short. In such a society, people watch talking heads such as "The view" a bunch of really stupid, jumped up housewives looked up to by the self-esteem bred millions. Compare that to the real abilities and brains of people of yesteryear who were not coddled and lied to about themselves but had to succeed against all manner of adversity. Most of the comments coming in are simply people regurgitating PC'isms. I was beaten regularly has a child. Not fun. But I was forced to develop personal resources to deal with it. Most parents are raising some form of marsh mellow with a very high self opinion based on nothing but PR. Interestingly Davy Crockett, afraid of another beating from his father for something he did ran away at 16 and returned two years later a grown man who had hunted and fought to survive. Today? He would be getting back massages from his parents, ego massages from his teachers and probably would end up as a massage therapist at a spa serving Angelina Jolie hand and foot. Not a patriot fighting at the Alamo. Most comments I've seen are knee-jerk PC responses and not much more than that.
tiger, you might want to tone it down a bit. Your mediocre friends are getting a little tired of your god complex.
Reading about this teacher and the first thing that pops into my head was those Smashmouth lyrics.
"She was looking kind of dumb with her finger and her thumb
In the shape of an "L" on her forehead"
The student may have marker on her forehead, but that teacher has one huge L on hers.
Jame's "teeching" position probably consists of acting as assistant Jr high school football coach
Listen, a teacher's job is to teach a student to be the best they can be. That might not be the best overall in the class, but the best that student can be. No, he does not need to make each student feel most special but he shouldn't cut the kid down and brand him stupid either for asking a question. Most educators encourage asking questions during the learning process.
For all of the backlash against Jerry? Stop giving him fodder to keep spewing his negativity. All you need to do is go back to his first post and see that he doesn't know the difference between they're and their. Additionally, the spelling, grammar and random sentence is bad. He's not worth these comments.
I am 51 years old and still getting out from under the snide and rude comments my dad made towards us children. My mom had the comments she had learned from her family.
When a child is damaged it creates a lifetime of trying to get back to an even keel.
To all the people who haven't been there who are criticizing me, just a couple of points for the sake of clarification. I never condoned this teacher labeling this student as stupid. It was a reprehensible act. If you read my posts, I simply said that this is evidence that (a) bad teachers can be fired and (b) anyone can be pushed hard enough to do and say dumb things. My very first week teaching, I was substitute teaching at a school that I had never been to before. While walking to my classroom, a student whom I had never seen, walked by me and gave me the finger. This child was all of 10 years old. I had never seen him before and that was how he greeted me. There are certainly some teachers who should find other professions. There are many more parents who had no business having children.
This "teacher" should be fired.
If that teacher needs a license to teach, it should be taken away permanently.
@James 4018786
And hence lies the problem... So many burned out teachers, ready to 'flame up' at a student, any student during his/her moment of weakness. I've been the teacher's target, my children have (I have two autistic children who where mainstreamed into public school), and I know of others. Not only that, teachers have reached the point where they quickly turn parents in to the State for very questionable reasons, yet, somehow ignore signs of blatant abuse in other cases. I have been amazed! I have good friends who are teachers. The ones who LOVE children, who look truly look out for their best interest, thrive in their jobs. When they have tired of the day to day grind, they move up the ladder to other jobs. One became a specialist in Autism in the Educational system. She has more autonomy and can help a child at a time. One of my other friends is bitter and can't wait for retirement. She used to be a great teacher. I wouldn't want her to teach any child now. Still, she wouldn't write 'stupid' on their head. She says it ALL the time at her home tho, as she grades their papers! So sad...
Yep, continue taking drugs. if it doesn't pay in the short run, it will in the long run, won't it?
maybe he was a crack-head and destroyed his brain before becoming a teacher. I guess any-one can become a teacher as log you know another crack-head.
Take it from a recently retired elementary teacher of forty years, that is disgraceful and that person, he or she, needs to be escorted out of the classroom and never allowed in again. What were they thinking, that isn't even funny.
Its not just this teacher that is a disgrace. At this point in time post #1.9 has recieved 50 votes.
James-4018786, I also hope he sues me for libel; he will lose. You can say what you want to , but first off, I would not post his full name and home town if the facts were not as I put them. I will always be a "bully" to defend my children when they need to be defended. When any of my 5 children do wrong I discipline them. My children are taught to be good students and good citizens.
My wife andf I currently home-school the three children who are still in school. I have many complaints with today's public indoctrination system. Granted, too many children get no parenting at home and too much responsibility is placed on teachers to do what the parents should be doing. however, I can give you a laundry list of people who should not be teachers and the good reasons for each one.
On the other hand, Alexander Imre, Virginia Dietrich andf Marlene Natale were three of my teachers growing up and great influences in my life. Academically, they did nothing specia lin their fields, but in life lessons I learned so much from them and will always have a special place in my heart for them. I do not know when Mrs. Dietrich passed away and Mr. Imre died two years ago. Mrs. Natale and I still correspond sometimes and I am very happy to have her as a friend these days.
Sir, if I make it impossible for people like you to be teachers now, I count that as my contribution to a better society. Incidentally, Mr. teacher James, the proper word is libel, not "liable". How many children did you set up for failure with your trove of knowledge?
bullspit, next thing you will be telling us is that you invented the internet
and not a bit of it undeserved, I'll bet.
your fantasy god complex is typical of trailer trash that doesn't know any better
Dan, great observation regarding tiger. He thinks he's enlightened but tiger's just another feeble, lonely, old and confused internet usurper whose father's discernment of his son was way ahead of his time.
Jerry-1903677, you are suspended for a week for violating rule # 1 of the Code of Honor.
May lose his job? Seriously? This man has damaged this kids life for at very least the rest of the time he is in that school district and quite possibly the rest of his life. The kid will be teased and taunted by class mates over this to no end it has and will damage this kids self esteem his standing among the other students and could possibly effect him for the rest of his life. Not only should this teacher lose his job but all of his future income should be placed in escrow for reparations when this kid ends up dropping out due to the harassment and ruining his chances of becoming a high wage earner as an adult.
Stupid as stupid does.. this teacher aint so bright himself....
This was cruel to tell a child he's stupid just for asking a question? How is the child suppose to learn if he dosen't ask. I'd write stupid on this teachers forehead.
When the teacher wrote stupid on this childs forehead wasn't that assult because he touched this child.
As usual this story lacks any real facts and information to base opinions on. For example the story says the child asked a question. It does not say anything about the child being disruptive in anyway or that the child had any type of behavioral and/or learning problems. So you jerks making comments insinuating the child was "stupid" or a "problem child" pull your heads out your hineys, grow up and act like adults. What this teacher did was plain and simple child abuse and abuse of his power over his students. One year on the job or not there is absolutely no excuse for his "stupid" behavior. If you can't handle kids get out the school. He should have been fired on the spot.
Growing up in the 50's and 60's I had teachers, counselors and even a principal who made fun of my nationality. I was made to write papers about my nationality which my dad found to be offensive and made it known to the one principal (a nun) who was indignant about it. He nearly took her head off figuratively and that's when my public school days began. It was no better there because my counselor thought that all the kids of my nationality should drop out of school and become material handlers at the local factory in town, because, after all, that's what my nationality was good for. My parents asked for and received a new guidance counselor for me. Because of this woman I was able to believe in myself as a person and excelled in classes, so much so that I was able to go onto college, the first in my family. After college I went into the Air Force. Upon returning to the high school for a career day (requested by my nice guidance counselor) I encountered my original counselor who told me that he knew I had it in me all the time to be successful. Funny way that he showed it. I was gracious though when I told him to kiss my butt.
eskimo...Duh...
You mean ex-teacher.
Yes, and the school director should write FIRED backwards on his forehead.
Reading more comments. And I thought I was so original.
Rev, we all think that until we read enough comments. Humbling, isn't it?
lol @ Imatthebeach. Indeed.
I'd say "You're FIRED".. indefinite suspension?? This guy should NOT be teaching kids anything.
Unfortunately, there is NO cure for "stupid" as this teacher hopefully finds in the very near future. Maybe he should have STUPID permanently tattooed to his forehead as a reminder of what he did. Just make sure it's reversed so HE can read it in the mirror every day.
Ya, let this thing go to court, so the judge can come up with a real creative penalty that will also make national headlines.
Funny you should mention "court" as this kind of reminds me of the Texas family court judge beating his daughter with a belt. Would Texas please go ahead and secede already?
Bluelake, why don't you secede from the country yourself and stop bothering the rest if us with your verbal diarrhea. You know nothing about Texas, and this did not happen in Texas, so be quiet!
Let the punishment fit the crime, write "Stupid" on the teacher's forehead for him and his family to enjoy over the holidays, right after firing him. The harm caused to that child will linger for years, as any decent human being would know.
Very biblical. I like it!
It's one thing for a teacher to be saying that to a junior or senior in HS but not to a child in K-8!!!!!
@can't stop me-Nobody's stupid for asking a question. Being stupid is where you don't bother to ask a question on something you don't know, so you continue to go on not knowing it. The kid at least showed some interest in asking, as someone said above too. Well if you're doing just fine, good for you. And no, it's not that America is breeding wimps, it's the fact that everyone is different. Therefore, there are people who will take things differently than you do. Like this kid. There could be a possibility that this could scar him.
You have it backwards to begin with. It was the teacher that was stupid in this case. He took it as a joke, but it went horribly wrong. He should have known.
You are correct Kylie, the teacher should have known better than to do something like that. The TEACHER was stupid.
It's not ok for a teacher to do this to a student regardless their age or grade level. Teachers aren't god and have no right to touch a child in such a manner. If a teacher feels that a child isn't learning what he/she is teaching him, then it is up to that teacher to meet with the parent(s) and perhaps a child study team to see if the child has learning disabilities, but never call the child stupid. It appears that this teacher is the "stupid" one in this story and needs a "time out" to go back to school to learn more on how to deal with students.
Comment # 7 deleted, Barney Frank derail. Stay on topic per the Code of Honor, Tony-1329239.
Yes it's wrong, but haven't we all wanted to do that to an adult at one time or another?
mt.... there are a great number of adults (using the term very loosely) I would like to do that to...
But for a "teacher" (another term being used very loosely in this instance) to do it to a student is abhorrent.
Yes... likely everyone at some point in their lives have wanted to do something similar .. .difference is that our our intelligence, maturity, and judgement stops those "stupid" impulses ... that teacher is just too stupid for color TV ..
Der shure wuld bee alot a stupids out der.
I wonder what the question was. When I was in school the teachers used the Dunce Cap and made the Dunces sit in the corner.
The roaring 20's, those were the days
Seriously though, he could have just written it with a regular whiteboard marker.
Yeah, I'd like to know the question too! What was the question?...anyone know?
Damn are we that old LMAO
@Sapience How old are you? I was born in 1965 and graduated from highschool in 1983 and not once did I see a dunce cap. That teacher was out of line and should be barred from teacher anywhere ever again. If it were my kid he had done that to, I would have gone to that school, beat the @!$%# out of him and stuck his marker up his ass.
@cant stop me Yes I can stop you. Are you another Tea Bagger with your anti fed remark. I suppose you also opposed Brown vs the Board of Education ruling and would like to bring racially segragated public schools back as well, because without Federal mandate, they never would have been abolished. I suppose you also want varying levels of education quality based on what short sited state governments feel like having with different states refusing to recognize the high school diplomas or school credit of schools in other states. That's another thing the federal government, through the department of education enforces by inflicting their "federal tyranny" as you call it on public schools by enforcing national standards. As for what this douchbag did to that kid, no child should be subject to that kind of abuse by other students and especially not by any facilty member. If it were your own child that he did that to, I seriously doubt you would blame it on your child.
Lighten up. I think he is an idiot, but don't go overboard. This overly P.C. world we live in now has no sense of humer. No I wouldn't appreciate it happening to my kids but it was a stupid mistake. You are all forgetting or probably don't know, that for decades they used to put kids on a chair in the corner with a big DUNCE cap on their heads. That is the same thing so don't blow it out of proportion. I'm sure the kid will get over it, as the DUNCE cap kids did.
uhmmm.... a "dunce" cap came off at the end of class.
PERMANENT marker is quite another story.
I'm hardly what would be called PC, but to be honest, if this individual did something like this to my grandchildren, his best course of action would be to leave the area for several weeks.
Lighten up? Really if any teacher ever did this to one of my kids they wouldnt leave the parking lot with all their teeth........a dunce cap is one thing but permanent marker will be on this poor kids face for days.......
Well they don't do that anymore for a reason. Humiliating children doesn't accomplish anything but making the teacher feel powerful. Its abuse pure and simple and that's what this teacher did. If he's a first year teacher and the year isn't half over, he doesn't even have the excuse of frustration and burn out. Chose another career. Teaching is not for you.
Absolutely right Anita. He appears to be a child himself.
Right on Anita. Same reason they got rid of corporal punishment.
It would stay on for a lot longer than just "days." Try weeks. And XDm, up above is right. The dunce cap came off after class and embarrassed the student just enough in THAT class that it might have jogged him or her into paying better attention. It wasn't an announcement of stupidity to the whole school. One teacher I had kept three very bright colored towels in her drawer. If you messed up in class too often with wrong answers, you had to wear one of THOSE (like a 'babushka') for the rest of the period.
This sounds like assault and battery, turn out the lights and don't answer the door Mr. Teacher, the bell tolls for you
A lot of horrendous behavior was tolerated several decases ago, like the dunce cap, the colored babushkas, wife beating, marital rape, child abuse....
That doesn't make it okay.
Ken - demeaning behavior by teachers was never the right thing to do. There is no justification for dunce caps or other forms of abuse. Many kids were scared emotionally by having thugs for 'teachers'. I recall the anger that welled up as a kid when I observed teachers mistreating classmates. I did well in school so this never happened to me. But even as a child I knew this was very wrong. Two of my childrens teachers got fired due the reports my kids brought home about the abuse of other kids in their classroom. This 'teacher' should be fired and find another profession as he is clearly unfit to teach.
LOL! OMG Do you people not remember as little back as the 70's Corpral punishment was still intact. I know I got the paddle once or twice. And that was in San Diego. My son was in school in the early 90's in Illinois and got the paddle once. So that being said. When the kids feared the teachers and principles there were no shootings in the schools. Kids didn't cuss at teachers or threaten them. If they did they were dealt with. Now everything is a reason to take a school or parent to court. Don't raise your voice at my child when they are beating on you... My God people get real. Since the late 80's the kids are becoming thugs. And what do they say if you try to disipline them Im calling the police... CHILD ABUSE CHILD ABUSE wait just settle out of court with me now and its all good. How bad has our country gotten...
Shane would you like YOUR child marked like this? How much laughing would you do then? Or would you prefer it was YOU that gets humiliated.
And I go back a lot further the the 70's there youngster. But even then NO teacher would even THINK about doing something this stupid.
Lighten up my a$$ GetReal! Society is supposed to evolve, not stay in the same place - you must have been one of those students that was shamed into wearing the "dunce" cap - certainly would explain your bitterness, lack of understanding and empathy. Sounds like if it were up to you, and we were still operating under the same social rules that put the dunce cap on kids, there would still be segregation. (BTW - I'm Caucasian and a proud, card-carrying member of the ACLU !) Along with a great many other social ills that are now illegal, say like rape, incest, beating your wife and/or children . . . the list is too long to post here from the days of old when children were made to wear dunce caps.
Xdm I will have you know I never had to wear a dunce cap. We didn't have them. But we did get the paddle even if you were talking in class. If it was me that it happened to I would be mad. If it was my child I would also be mad. BUT! You all have to realise we dont know what this child said or did.
GetReal- We are supposed to evolve. MAYBE YOU SHOULD TELL ALL THESE BAD MOUTH KIDS THE SAME THING! You know the ones that have no respect for their elders. They Cuss at old people they never think about the reprocussions of what they do. We as adults have raised a generation or two of thugs. It's time to take back our country and stop letting the kids run the show... Look who they put as our commander and chief!!
shane i hardly think you have any evidence of kids becoming thugs in the last few years since the dunce cap. maybe you should look back thru history and see what all the fuss was about with gangs and hippies during your wonderfull years of the 50's and 60's when your so called methods were working. as far as them running the show and having no respect i think they learned that from the society they were raised into. where is the teachers respect of children when he shows the whole class what he thinks he has the right to do if he wants.
Ken.....judging from your comment I take it that you must be speaking from experience about the dunce cap. Permanent magic marker isn't the same thing unfortunately...it goes home with the young lad and will last for as long until it disappears. The dunce cap came off after the class was over. Perhaps the shame lingered but certainly not as long as the tattoo on this kid's head. This is bullying of the worst kind and the teacher needs to be reprimanded for it.
Okay Kevin your right Im wrong... Oh wait your thoughts of me and the 50's or 60's bahaha i graduated in 88 I was in grade school in the mid to late 70's.. Kids did fight back then just like they always have and always will. The difference is well lets see how many times can you think of that a student or 2 or 3 went to school and started killing people, making bombs Tagging everything in site, standing in the middle of the street and talking when you sit and wait and finally you beep your horn and they attack you. Kevin you my friend are naive to what really goes on. I can tell you almost exactly when kids started running the show. it was in like 84 or 85 with rap music. Dont get me wrong I actually like hiphop. But the ganster rap made kids want to be thugs. NWA, Public Enemy, Ice T, Snoop, 2 Pac i can go on and on and on. So lets be clear here I am not from the 50's or 60's I am a generation X kid. I can not think of any problems before the late 80's in schools that dealt with kids and mac 10's or any other gun in school. Not till the Bloods and Crips. Oh by the way I grew up in San Diego not a small city. But now I can think of a few incidents since the late 90's like Santana High Santee Ca, Granite Hills high El Cajon Ca, Columbine just to name a few.
So in closing this teacher did something stupid. We are all human and have all done stupid things. Anyone of you who say you havnt are lying. I do believe he needs to be punished for this. And if it was my child I would be in jail for beating this teacher... Oh but wait wouldnt that be stupid of me? Let me tell you all that believe your kids are ANGELS... LOL that is funny. Kids now talk and act differently then they used too. But the real problem is they all want to act like adults. And the Adults do anything to make these ANGELS act like kids. And once again we dont know exactly what was said that the teacher finally broke and wrote that. People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.
Oh yeah Kevin by the way The teacher doesn't need to respect a child. Thats why he is the teacher. He is there to teach them the basic fundementals of school. US AS PARENTS ARE THERE TO TEACH OUR CHILDREN TO RESPECT ADULT EVEN TEACHERS. That is not his job to teach respect. If you want them to teach more than what there little salarys pay then pony up the bucks and pay for them to teach MORALS. Wait once again that is the PARENTS PLACE. I see you think it was some other persons job to teach your children how to say THANK YOU and PLEASE and EXCUSE ME.. You kevin are the problem these kids have..
so shane you admit your an idiot speaking out your @$$ with no evidence to support your theory of corporal punishment making the world a safer place with well behaved children(evidence being you spent your whole argument saying nothing more than your an egotistical 30 something year old with power trippin problems). i hope your not a teacher or a parent cause your kids may end up as stupid as you. and as far as respect goes if you dont earn it you dont get it that is reality. what your talking about is fear and wanting your children to fear anyone older whether they are right or wrong simply because they are older. respect is earned and with your mentality i hardly think anyone respects your opinions including your children. good luck in life you old grumpy fart
Kevin Kevin Kevin, I am not 30 something. I am 40 something so you just showed how well you did in school. If I graduated in 88 do the math. So I am a parent of 2 grown children. My son graduated with honors from a school with a graduating class of 600 he had a 4.1 in all AP classes. He never brought a gun to school. My daughter is 17 a Senior in high school at same school son went to 4 years ago. She is a Champion Figure Skater. Again she never brought a gun to school. And my kids were raised to listen to adults. Learn what they have to teach. Worry about reprocussions for what they did. They were given the ideals that Adults know more than them if they didnt know more then why were the adults teaching the kids. With your reasoning Kevin Kids should be given the keys to the car as soon as they start school. Or maybe they should be able to drink alcohol too. Kids learn to respect people after they listen to them. But most kids dont want to listen to adults anymore cause they know so much better than the adults. Kids getting pregnant at 12,13,14,15 and so on. Carrying guns, beathing people to death. Raping tean girls. I TELL YOU WHAT YOUR AN IDIOT! GOOGLE WHAT I JUST WROTE (Kids getting pregnant at 12,13,14,15 and so on. Carrying guns, beathing people to death. Raping teen girls.) See if what I say isn't supported by news... You need to get an eye opening wait till some kid that thinks he is a gang memeber shoots you in your arm cause he wants you Ipod, or your jacket or your shoes. YOU SIR ARE A WASTE OF HUMAN FLESH WITH NO BRAIN..
shane, clearly logical reasoning is not your strong point. you have done nothing but wave a bunch of strawman arguments and brag about how wonderful your kids are because they managed to not get too screwed up from your beatings.
Wow.
This is nothing but being a bully and yet we have all this advertising and children commiting suicide for being bullied.
Yeah, maybe he should write "IDIOT" on his own forehead.
Hahaha! The kid probably IS stupid and deserved it. It's about time stupid kids are acknowledged for being stupid instead of being told how "great" they are. There's way too much self-esteem going around these days among people who have no right to it. That teacher deserves at least a nomination for Teacher Of The Year. Besides, those markers aren't at all "permanent". They come off easily with isopropyl alcohol.
There's stupid and there's ignorant. If the question was valid, the child was ignorant and the teacher was a failure. But children don't need to be belittled and it is counterproductive to the learning process. I agree we've become a little too PC for my tastes, but where children are concerned it is wise to err on the side of caution.
No, you don't teach kids by belittling them, you teach them to understand. Go sit in the corner with the duncecap on your head General Electric.
I hate to say it but you said "electric" instead of "eclectic". It is you sir who needs to go sit in the corner for failing to insult your nemesis.
GE - okay, how do we evaluate your clueless comment? If we sidestep our concern for your self esteem for a moment (with your apparent permission), are you ignorant or stupid? Or both?
well jerry-668318, what you said has lead me and everyone else who read through these comments to a couple conclusions. One. You were obviously made fun of in highschool, and no body really cared about you. Two. You have had no father figure in your life, making you a lonely child that had no body to feel sorry for you or teach you anything when it comes to being a man. Three. Your an ignorant human being that says things to other people about there children because it makes you feel big and bad talking about people who are starting to become more successful than you'll ever be. And last but not least, you obviously have a tiny penis, therefore leading to say things about other peoples kids because you have no children of your own to care about and be proud of.
Hey GeneralEclectic, your way off the mark on the too much self-esteem going around thing. There is too much sense of entitlement, and your post is a prime example of it.
The General said what needed to be said. The inability and/or unwillingness of the public school system to separate the wheat from the chafe is a just a reflection of our society in general. There is also a clear difference between a child who is making the effort to learn but is struggling mightily and a child who is nothing but a f##k-up.
To what point has our society degenerated and how does it manifest itself in the school system? Look at little league baseball: everyone gets a trophy at the end of the season regardless of how well they performed. You get double destruction here. The kids who are good at baseball learn an early, bitter lesson in false equality: it's more important to equalize the kids who are lousy at baseball with an El Sucko award that it is to recognize the kids who put in the effort to be good at it. It's a kick in the balls for them when they go into the real world and do a crappy job at something; they get a royal reaming instead of a reward and can't figure out why.
How does it transfer to the schools? The only mantra you seem to hear is that every one of these kids is equal. Really? You have naturally talented kids who are also willing to put effort into what they do. You also have kids who don't have the pure talent but make up for it with the motor to go out there and battle hard every day. Next is the kid who will go out there, put forth an honest effort but will struggle and still keeps plugging away; this kid should be recognized as a warrior, not an idiot, and should feel highly insulted with the rewards handed to people who only show up to take up space. Then there are the "stars", who have been spoon-fed this notion of their own stardom from a very early age; their head is always snapping around looking for a cookie everytime they do something, regardless of whether or not it's even an accomplishment. The schools often heap rewards on them just to shut the star's parents up, because the parents are more obnoxious than their star offspring. Finally, there are the f##k-ups; when they're not being disruptive or ignorant, the only useful purpose they serve is to keep a piece of furniture from feeling lonely. And they'll slap the whole world in the face by pocketing a perfect attendance award.
Important thing to remember: a child who is a f##k-up can easily be identified by age 7 and weeded out; there is overwhelming research out there establishing that a child's character is 95% or more complete by age 7. What do you think the schools will be dealing with when a kid sees his parents always finding an excuse to not go to work? How about when the same kid sees his father punch a store manager or restaurant manager in the face to settle an argument? The sooner you weed him out and make an example out of him, the sooner you will break him and society will benefit.
Bottom line: you are only as equal as you go out there and prove yourself to be. And this is the one lesson the schools, with parental encouragement, are failing miserably to teach.
rodentwarrior...
I agree with your position. I also believe far too many are pampered and given too much credit for failing work.
However, I believe the teachers should FAIL the student. NOT humiliate him or her. There was NO need for the "teacher" in this instance to stoop to such prepubescent almost infantile behavior. HE IS AN ADULT not a classmate. Act like an adult, or get out of the classroom. Fortunately in this situation, the choice in all probability will not be his to make.
General Eclectic I hope you don't have children.
You need to go back to school and take a child development course if you truly believe your crap about being able to tell if a child is a @!$%# up at age 7. Maybe somebody said that about you and you believe it. And just what the hell do you mean by "weeding out"????????????? Sounds like your the one that needs to be "weeded out" of this conversation and from EVER procreating. GET A VASECTOMY STAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thatswhat, are you really talking about child development or are you talking about child enablement? Child development means hard-nosed character development. You don't clap like a circus seal at every little thing they do; if you do, then they'll end up going through life looking for the cookie, and will be unable to deal with the fact the world does not throw you a cookie for doing what you're supposed to do. You're straight with them with the effort they're putting out and the results they're getting. Very few things pi## me off more than the "you tried your best " line; it's always used as an excuse for a kid who gets the result he earns for putting out a lousy effort, and the kid ends up thinking the whole world will also make excuses for him.
Then there's the "tell them they're special" line; probably the worst thing you can do. It always translates to the kid thinking he's privileged in some capacity, that he can somehow get the results that a third party expects of him without putting out the effort that third party requires. Do you know what the "down-hill fast" stage from here is? Probably not, so I'll fill you in. It's when the parent coaches the kid on what to do or say to either get their way or get out of doing what is required of them. Guess how it ends up? The kid usually says "my pee-pee hurts", and the teachers, coaches or instructors end up in crisis management mode; I've seen this ploy used and must say that it is very disruptive and very effective.
How do you "weed out"? You look at effort and results along with disruptive impact. A kid who is not putting effort into what he's doing, getting lousy results, and could care less is only taking up space until he drops out. The sooner you get him into a work camp the better; society is better served with this kid digging ditches and living in a bunkhouse instead of robbing 7-11's and sitting in a jail cell. The same is true for the kid who has issues with basic behavior and keeps getting booted out of classes or off the school bus. This type of kid is living proof that compulsory education to age 16 is a mistake, and society's best interest is not served by warehousing them in a school.
Conversely, the kid who is putting out the effort but his results are not up to his own expectations is the kid you need to identify and help. He's the kid who wants to and will make something of himself if someone is willing to work with him. He's the kid who has also earned the right to be recognized because he's not giving up.
Child development is a simple science once you get rid of the politically correct enablers who use it as a launching pad for their own agendas. It all starts with recognizing that kid who is putting an honest effort into what he's doing, whether the result be excellent or a work in progress; you don't throw him under the bus to bring a false measure of equality to a kid who's putting out no effort at all. It also means knowing the difference between special talent and special kids. Special talent really does exist while special kids are a mere fabrication of the politically correct enablers. If a kid has the talent, be straight with him and tell him what he has but that if he really wants to make something of that talent, he needs to bring it in terms of effort. Special kids are nothing but an invention of the enablers so the enablers can earn a fabulous living, and keep mommy and daddy living the illusion of a special kid. They make a pantload off the kid and his family, between evaluating the kid to determine the syndrome which caused the kid to be a failure and the counseling sessions to re-inflate the kid's formerly over-inflated sense of self-esteem. The real world has a way of curing special kids of their specialness.
Absolutely inexcusable!
but totally called for...we needed something to gripe about...
If it was my kid I'd give the teacher an attitude adjustment with my baseball bat.
durt bagg,
Why a ball bat I would want him to feel a fist when it connected then I would write on his forehead with something a little more permanent leaving a scar that reads DUMB ASS for the rest of his life but what do we expect, this is what we end up with if we had not gotten rid of corporal punishment he would have gotten what he needed to make him think before he acted.instruction can take on many forms but humiliation is'nt one of them.
When I was in 8th grade I had a teacher who all of the students for over 30 years were terrified of. He bragged that in all that time he had never had a student he didn't whip. I was a straight-A student and very disciplined. Two weeks before the school year ended he hit me 36 times (I'll never forget the #) on my butt and legs hard enough to draw blood. He had no reason but said since I was the only one he'd never had reason to whip he'd have to do it anyhow. He didn't know how abusive my father was. I never made a sound and the boys who at first enjoyed seeing me being hit soon quieted. When I went home I called my father at work and told him what happened. Next morning, my father came to school and broke 2 paddles on my teacher. The school hushed it up. That teacher didn't even look at me after that. He retired that year, too. It was the only time that i was proud of my father. It might have been wrong to the world, but it was right to me.
someone wrote stupid on a young mans head ,,,years later he was known as ALBERT EINSTIEN,, so smile stupid kids
Carl, is that true?
I'm not sure if Carl's story is true to fact, but his presumption is correct about Einstein not making the mensa society in his younger years.

Carl, I really liked your comment, true or not! For those in this post who have said that some are "stupid", not everyone is special, etc, etc., I disagree. Every person, and I mean every one of us has aspects different than others. Schools too often pigeon hole everyone into a round slot instead of realizing that not everyone is what they want them to be. It's demoralizing. That father is special to his children, that teacher is important to that teenager because they get who he/she is and so that student excels in that class. It's amazing to see!
Albert Einstein was considered very slow and unteachable in his younger years because of his inability to memorize materials that he considered useless. The theories of a learning disability or dyslexia have been disproved because of his ability to learn other materials and information. However, because of his personality quirks he would probably be diagnosed as autistic. (check out almost any college text or internet search).
I read Albert Einstein was autistic.
einstien didnt need to know what the teachers were saying because he had allready moved on to more imortant thoughts. it was also useless for him to teach his teachers because they were sitting too high on their pedestal back then and wouldnt have heard him. although im sure many of his teachers tried to take credit saying ...yes i taught him his foundation and thats how he got where he is today. Here is to all that are smarter than your teachers. stick with it in a few years the law wont require you to sit there and listen to them anymore. then you are free to use your mind productively
I don't know if that is true but I have read more than once that Einstein did not speak untill he was 5years old.
It is so true that just one mean or unkind word from a teacher can do so much harm to a child. On the other hand one kind word or compliment to a student not use to one can make a positive influence on a child. This teacher should be severely punished if not fired.
Einstein wasn't autistic. There were a few claims by some psychologists but there is no proof and the vast majority of experts say he wasn't. He was married twice and was also reported to be a womanizer who had several girlfriends while being married. He also had a good sense of humor which autistic people don't have.
He had an idiosyncratic personality which leads to non-conformity.
I'm wondering if there's more to this story than what's being reported, like there usually is. Was this kid really stupid or low IQ. Or was this kid someone who plays stupid to get a rise out of the class and get under the teachers skin.
TJHarris wrote " The theories of a learning disability or dyslexia have been disproved because of his ability to learn other materials and information."
Would you care to explain to this person with two college degrees and a learning disorder a bit more about what you mean by that statement? Thank you.
Yes, Rev, it is true -- Albert Einstein was labeled as 'stupid' as a child and look what he became!! What he accomplished in life does NOT excuse the teachers' behavior in any way, shape or form -- the same with this child that we are reading about today. I agree with most of the posts concerning the firing of the teacher and the taking away of the ability to teach anywhere in the United States and its territories.
kcsstrawberryblonde-I meant that according to historical documents that show he didn't have any trouble learning once he was out of the traditional school environment, and that he was able to quickly process information and retain it educational historians have disproved the theory of learning disabilities and dyslexia.
There is no doubt that students (young or older) with learning disabilities or disorders can be successful in whatever career they choose. If my earlier post was understood that way, I truly apologize.
Roodles-Even if the child has a low IQ...he is NOT stupid. I spend a good deal of time making sure my students know they are not stupid because people have judged them that way. Not everyone can or should be a brain surgeon, that doesn't make them stupid. It means they are successful and happy in another career.
Albert Einstein probably had ADD, fortunately in them days he probably got the paddle. Nowadays they medicate the free thinkers!
That person should not be a teacher! What a stupid thing to do! Idiot!!
Someone will be writing "unemployed" on this idiot's forehead.
Fire the teacher. Then the lawsuit comes. No way should this teacher be allowed to teach. Anyone who did something like that to one of my kids would regret it dearly after I took them to court, sued them, and the school district. Fortunately my kids are above average intelligence.
GeneralEclectic, maybe you need to have someone write stupid on your forehead ???
I was thinking someone should tattoo it on Generals head.
So you would really sue because a teacher wrote stupid on your kid's head? You are part of a big problem in this country - frivolous litigation that has tied up our courts, caused huge increases in insurance premiums, and awarded greed. Sad, really, sad.
Your kids may be "above average intelligence" but they must get them from their Mom's genes, Merlyn.
You sue him and you get nothing...he is/was a first year teacher. In most districts he can be fired without cause. In this case they have cause.
I would absolutely sue the teacher (not the school district, given their immediate and appropriate response). I wouldn't care about they money, I may sue him for $100, but what I WOULD care about would be adding the stipulation that he not be allowed to teach again. Honestly though it would probably be easier to file assault charges. Easy enough to prove and a record that shows he abused a student would be enough to forcibly convince him to pursue another line of work.
What an idiot. This person must be out of touch with his own existance.
Poor kid
if a child ask a question give him a anwser we all learn somthing new every day learning never stops no matter how smart you are.
Good point Gary. There really are NO bad questions, because the questioner obviously needed the answer. This just encourages no one in the class to ask in fear of having the same thing done to them.
Even as a adult you are still learning. I guess I'am stupid but I know alot about cars because I asked questions. I never get tired of learning new things. I didn't know how to use a computer until I was 55 yrs. but again I took some classes and asked questions.
I know that if that were my child, that teacher would have no teeth in addition to losing his job when I got done with him!! This is beyond unacceptable!!
Yup. No teeth and no job!
What ever happened to the good ole dunce hat or standing up with your nose in the corner?
Beyond a doubt this teacher needs fired right now!!!
The kid may in fact be stupid...but he's about to be stupid rich!
Lets completely bubble wrap all the children and and shield them from the consequences of their actions and continue to reward bad behavior while restricting parents and other authoritative figures from providing any type of discipline so that they grow up to be horribly self absorbed politicians.
What are you talking about...there was no mention in article of the kid behaving badly or doing anything to deserve this. Hopefully you have not reproduced because you would make a lousy parent, if you are not one already.
L8N8
WTH are you talking about? "authoritative figures" and "self-absorbed politicians" have nothing to do with an idiot teacher writing ANYTHING on ANY CHILD! And since when is a teacher an authoritative figure?
It's evident that this teacher is IGNORANT and NOT teaching the class properly or the child would have not had to ask the question!
There are some scary people in this world!
Teachers ARE authority figures....they have a great deal of influence in the classroom. They can easily sway a class to feel one way about a child. Not to mention if they grade out of spite, which does happen, they can ruin a college career or have a child punished at home. It isn't "coddling" children to NOT write in them in permanent market, it is treating them like human beings. Does anyone who thinks this was ok think that their boss should write lazy, stupid or slacker on you are your coworkers?? It is called assault you know......
How about we bubble wrap your head and seal it with duct tape?
L8N8, your perspective resembles the backside of a donkey.
L8N8...you are getting way to much attention for this, but im chiming in, your pretty stupid! The kid asked a question...a question. That does not deserve a reaction from a teacher like that. Letsbubble wrap you so you dont hurt any kids. Letting a kid know the question needed rephrasing, or that the question did not apply, etc..but writing stupid on the kids head fails in many dimensions. First of all, you DON'T write on other peoples kids! Let along write something.....stupid.
I realize tht i am responding to your BS a day late, however I couldn't resist telling you what a fool you are. I don't remember anyone saying the child was misbehaving or a problem in the class room. Although I don't believe in physical force, I assure you that he would face harsh punishment or every one in the chain of cmmant of the school district, would be defending their selfs in our legal system. You, I might consider physical force, cause you are stupid!
"Stupid is as stupid does"...
Joke or not, that's inexcusable behavior for any adult against a kid. He acted more immaturely than the kids he is supposed to be teaching. He needs fired or either that sent to deal with violent and volatile students in a rough school...and see if maybe he can get away with writing something like that on their heads.
