Suspect in shooting that left soldier paralyzed surrenders

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. -- The man wanted in connection with the shooting of a soldier who was attending his own welcome home party Friday in San Bernardino turned himself in Monday afternoon.

The suspect, identified as Ruben Ray Jurado, surrendered to authorities at the Chino Hills Sheriff’s Station.

Ruben Ray Jurado is accused in the shooting of soldier Christopher Sullivan.

Jurado was to be brought to San Bernardino City Police station for questioning and then booked, according to police.

Earlier Monday, authorities released a mug shot of Jurado, who allegedly shot Army Spec. Christopher Sullivan. The 22-year-old soldier, who was on leave, remained hospitalized Monday in critical condition.

Family members say the Purple Heart recipient suffered two gunshot wounds, which shattered his spine and left him paralyzed.

Sullivan was at his own welcome home party Friday night in the 2800 block of North Garner Avenue.

At the party, Sullivan's brother got into an argument over football teams with Jurado, who was an acquaintance of Sullivan and had played football with him in high school, police Sgt. Gary Robertson said.

Jurado punched Sullivan's brother and Sullivan intervened. Jurado then pulled a gun and fired multiple shots, hitting Sullivan in the neck, Robertson said.

Sullivan was wounded in a suicide bombing attack last year in Kandahar while serving with the 101st Infantry Division. He suffered a cracked collar bone and brain damage in the attack and had been recovering in Kentucky, where he is stationed. He was home on leave when the shooting occurred.

The Los Angeles Times reported that Sullivan joined the military in 2009.

Fabian Salazar, a soldier who served with Sullivan in Afghanistan, said Sullivan rushed back to try to rescue other soldiers after the bomb blast propelled him several feet, leaving him dizzy and disoriented.

"I know he would take a bullet for his brother," Salazar told the newspaper. "And if you asked him again after all this... if he would take a bullet for him again, he would say yes. That's the type of person he is."

Should have executed him on the spot.

Tragic that people kill people. At least he was honorable and turned himself in. That is the problem when carrying a gun, and unfortunately, in many areas in and around Los Angeles, as in any large city, gang members and other people carry guns and have no problem placing a bullet between your eyes.

A real oxymoron when a soldier from battle was not paralyzed until he came back to the US... And they say the US is NOT dangerous. lol

Don't you just miss the days when you settled disagreements with a good old fashioned fist fight and no one was sissy enough to pull a gun?

Seems the strict gun control laws in CA. didn't make it safer for anyone except maybe the only one that had a gun.

This mot%er Fuc%er needs to spend the rest of his life behind bars. I can't even imaging the emotions he and this young mans family are going through, having made it home alive after he's been wounded, to face such a punk coward scum bag in his own families home. ESPECIALLY since the argument was about such a trival thing as 'football terms'.

My heart goes out to the young man, and his family, and I hope they all get the support and comfort they need.

Agreed. They should do the same thing to this punk and make his family pay the bills or go into bankruptcy just like the soldiers family. The only true punishment for this guy will be to watch his family suffer because of his choices.

It is probably true, that guns are the number one weapon of choice. But, if all guns were to suddenly disappear, knives would the take the lead.........And the killings would continue.

What ever the weapon used, please be smart enough to blame the killer.

That's not going to happen here Arizona. Here we take advantage of anything possible to further the argument of choice. It makes no sense to blame the perp. Nope that doesn't make any sense. Let's blame a piece of metal or the cops or etc etc

Just think. Before guns were invented stabbing and poisoning was the number one cause of death in a fight!

What an insanely stupid reason for shooting someone! There is no doubt in my mind that this dude is a nut job! You go to a party for a friend! You take a pistol to said party! You get in an argument over football teams! You punch the friend's brother! The friend attempts to intervene! So, moron shoots friend! I'll bet he has a criminal record and should not have been in possesion of the pistol! This poor guy has to suffer the consequences of Jurado's stupidity and will be paralyzed.....if he lives! What a wasteful, stupid thing to get involved in! Red

If Our government had done the right thing we would've shut immigration down to a trickle after ww2 and and the killer wouldn't exist

It's nice to know we'll be having to pay for this mouth breathers prison time through our taxes while he sits in a prison cell eating three meals a day, reading books, exercising and living off the state/government.

Why can't we just have public executions?

"when guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns". Bring his ass out here to North Dakota if he wants to be in the wild wild west, he might of shot the guy but out here we pack too...........legally. There would be no need for a judge jury or stinking lawyer. This kid is a soldier in the US Military, he should be sentenced by the military for the destruction and attempted murder of government property. Fry him until his head pops open!!!!! I hope the best for this soldier and his family.

The ego, the id and their potential for violence should be thoroughly addressed in elementary school to give kids a stronger psychological foundation to prevent the catastrophe that even petty anger can lead to. Buying in to any of these macho mind sets and egotistical standards is the first problem. Kids should be strongly educated that anger will betray you and that it's alright not to win every argument and to accept petty social defeat with a shrug and a grain of salt. Maybe if these macho mind sets realized that in most cases anger is usually the secondary emotion after a person's been emotionally hurt, they would have a better chance at collectively choosing better standards of social interaction and problem resolution.

Having said that I hope and Pray for a miracle and some kind of miracle

medical solution for Christopher. There's lot's of brilliant surgeons and new developments that can bring a light to a tragic situation.
