A suspect is under arrest in Los Angeles in connection with more than 50 fires that cost millions of dollars in property damage. NBC's Mike Taibbi reports.
Updated at 12:29 p.m. ET:
LOS ANGELES - A State Department official says a German man was identified as a suspect in the Los Angeles arsons because his mother was the subject of a provisional arrest request by Germany, The Associated Press reported.
Speaking on condition of anonymity because the investigations are ongoing, the official told AP on Tuesday that authorities learned about Harry Burkhart while working on his mother's case and recognized her 24-year-old son in security video of the arson suspect.
Los Angeles authorities were alerted and Burkhart was arrested Monday.
Another federal law enforcement said Burkhart was present when his mother, Dorothee, was arrested Dec. 28 by U.S. marshals and Los Angeles police. That official spoke anonymously because the official was not authorized to discuss the case.
Earlier:
LOS ANGELES - A man who was arrested in connection with a string of arson fires across the Los Angeles area reportedly told police officers, "I hate America," when they put him in handcuffs on Monday.
According to a witness the suspect, 24-year-old Harry Burkhart from Germany, uttered the words as he was pulled over and arrested early Monday, L.A. Weekly reported.
Police made the arrest after a tip from federal officials who thought they recognized the grainy figure caught on a surveillance video near where a car fire was reported.
A "person of interest" detained in connection with 53 arson fires in the Hollywood area has been arrested and will be charged, officials said Monday. NBC's Mike Taibbi reports.
Burkhart was booked for investigation of arson of an inhabited dwelling. Since the arrest, firefighters have not responded to any other suspicious fires.
"Our long four-day nightmare is over," said Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky.
Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Times reported that police searched a home on West Sunset Boulevard Monday evening. According to witnesses, the search took place in a second-floor apartment above the Le Figaro Hairstyling hair salon, the Times said.
"I cut his hair just a week and a half ago," said Shlomo Elady, a stylist at the salon who told the Times Burkhart had been customer for more than a year. "I'm in shock. He's my client. I never saw any sign of trouble."

Los Angeles County Reserve Deputy Sheriff Shervin Lalezary (right), who spotted the now detained man driving a van, smiles as he is introduced by Sheriff Lee Baca (left) during a news conference in Los Angeles Monday.
Police declined to reveal any motive for more than 50 fires that have occurred since Friday in Hollywood, neighboring West Hollywood and the San Fernando Valley, causing about $3 million in damage.
However, the 24-year-old, who told officers he's from Frankfurt, may have been upset about his mother's legal woes.
When asked at a news conference about reports that an immigration problem with Burhkart's mother may have been a factor, authorities declined to comment.
Galina Illarionova, who lives in the same apartment complex as the suspect, told reporters through a Russian translator that an agitated Burkhart visited her Sunday and said that his mother was having some kind of legal problems.
He told her his mother was in trouble with the authorities and wanted Illarionova to attend a legal hearing with him, but he later said he didn't need her help.
'Most dangerous arsonist'
"We are very confident in this arrest, but we have a long way to go," said Police Chief Charlie Beck, who mentioned receiving information from federal authorities who recognized Burkhart from the video. They believed he had been involved in removal hearings in immigration court, but they didn't specify how he was involved.
Burkhart, who is being held without bail, was described by Sheriff Lee Baca as the "most dangerous arsonist in Los Angeles County that I can recall."
Authorities didn't know how long he's been in the United States and said he isn't cooperating with them.
The onslaught of intentionally set fires left residents on edge over the holiday weekend in some of the most densely populated areas of the city.
Hundreds of investigators, police officers and firefighters raced to deal with the blazes. Police conducted extra patrols all weekend, and the noise of helicopters and sirens persisted virtually nonstop in Hollywood.
The blazes forced many apartment dwellers from their homes. But there were no serious injuries — one firefighter was hurt in a fall from a ladder, and another person suffered smoke inhalation.
Most of the fires began in cars, and authorities have not said how they were started.

If you hate America....here, let me show you the door.
I hope the only door he'll be seeing is the one with bars on it. But who knows, in this country you can get off just about anything these days if you got the right lawyer.
Don't forget too, if you steal someone's life savings, you get to be a CEO!
You can get away with anything if you are in the country illegally. If a legal resident started those fires he would never see freedom again. This is just one more example that our borders are wide open to anyone who wants to trouble themselves to walk across. Obama is fond of saying his first priority is to protect the American people, well this ought to be a wake-up call to him that his first priority should be to enforce U.S. laws. It is unconscionable that the President of the United States will attempt to nullify and circumvent laws that have been passed by the U.S. Congress.
What laws are you talking about?
After this SOB is done serving his sentence for arson he should have his citizenship revoked, if he even is a citizen, and be sent back to Germany. If he hates America, then let's show him the door. In fact, if he hates America so much, we should even see about arranging for him to do his time in Germany. That way the American taxpayers do not get stuck paying for his incarceration. I also suspect that German jails are a little less pleasant than US ones. I am sure that we can find more than enough people wiling to donate to pay for a plane ticket back to Germany for this piece of crap.
BRAINWASHED!!!!
All of you!!!
Messed this world up in less than 200 years and are still telling people what to do with their lives and if they don't listen then they will be arrested!!!
Even though you did not do anything wrong to anyone they will look to take away your freedo over money for instance especially if you are poor.
Individuals being targeted almost have to be pro-zctive to defend themselves.
for instance...
Iman officer who will take you to jail for not having your car registered although it is a recession....
Sounds like an Obama speech writer
The deputy, Shervin Lalezary, tell me he doesn't look like Ponch (Erik Estrada) from "CHIPS". "CHIPS 2010", starring Shervin Lalezary....it has a ring...OK, a bad one, but that did not stop a remake of "Charlie's Angels".
On another note, I am sure he will do well in prison (I am not talking rape, but they will surely give him a hard time). Prisoners may be criminals, but most are still Americans at heart, and generally do not like guys, who knock the U.S.
So, what is the difference between this guy and progressives who are regulating and spending us out of existence at the same time?
DON'T send him back to Germany. Keep him permanently behind bars where he can't do any more damage.
If he hates America just wait until he spends some time in an American prison. We don't pamper our convicts like they do in Europe.
I don't think he'll get out for a long long time if convicted,
I also believe that a German prison would be more pleasant than San Quentin..which is probably where he'll end up.
@Obama Haters:
Here are reasons why everything in your life is Obama's problem:
10. You car doesnt start in the morning
9. You ate too much and cant go to the toilet.
8. Viagra isnt working for you.
7. Your wife just left you (see 8 and 6)
6. You look ugly.
5. Your neighbors dont look like you (see 5.)
4. It was hot today
3. It was cold today
2. You actually had to get up to use the remote
1.************ Obama reminds you of your father ********************
perhaps you need to be shown the door also BEEV
Pylar, the illegal immigrant problem started way before President Obama. You seem to have forgotten that reagan granted amnesty to over 5 million in 1985. There's plenty of blame to go around, so let's spread some on the publicans as well.
Yes, be proactive.. register and insure your car, as required by law. It has nothing to do with whether you were "hurting anybody" or not. Owning and driving a vehicle is not a right, it is a privilege granted when you have met the necessary requirements. If you do not like the requirements, you are free to travel to a place that is more to your liking.
NoVi2, Yep that about covers it ..... LMAO, Oh, you left something out, (11) Pissed off because they have a bunch of MORONS running for the Presidency, and should all be BLOND .....
Since this guy turned out to be German, this must be an illegal immigrant problem. Send him back to Mexico.
I think all you "Send him back if he doesn't love America" people should look at this more logically, if that is possible.
This guy obviously has mental problems.
The fact that he is from Germany has nothing to do with it. Plenty of Americans who find themselves in financial or legal trouble probably have said "I hate America" out of frustration also. The irresponsible media is obviously playing this tidbit up to get a rise out of people.
Also, if you think all Europeans "pamper" their prisoners, you've obviously never seen the movie "Midnight Express".
BTW, the deputy DOES look like Eric Estrada. Cute!
if this is the arsonist; those who think he will be dealt lightly are very mistaken; he is looking at a minimum of 25 years in prison, arson is up there with the big crimes.
If he thinks he hates America now, wait until this a** sees the American prison system.
John, try not to forget the Reagan amnesty in '86 was part of a compromise and the Democrats never held up their end of the bargain. The deal was that the Democrat-controlled Congress was to seal the border in exchange for amnesty for 3 million illegal immigrants. Democrats never followed through.
I understand why the Republicans are now reluctant to "compromise" with the Democrats since there have been a series of reneging on these compromises by the Democrats since then.
Bill was actually passed in 1985 with a repub. controlled congress. Signed by reagan in 1986. Bill was bi-partisan, so there was equal blame. Nobody walks away free on this one....cept the illegals.
Wow, so many intelligent comments.
Yeah, our stupid government let's em all off the hook! Hey, wait a minute, jurors aren't government employees. Wow, talk about genius. Those founding fathers pawned off all the responsibility onto the citizens so the government can't be blamed. That's pretty sneaky. Sounds almost socialist.
Recipe for justice:
1 jar of Vaseline
2 ounces of gas
1 match
mix Vaseline and gas together spread liberally over genitals and light match-kick back and watch it's fun for all ages.
@AZChzhd
a series huh? i'd like to see that list.
but i suppose if that is true, then they are totally justified in not compromising on anything, even to the extent that the country cant function legislatively. even to the extent that nothing can be done to move things along and improve the economy or anything else. republicans are totally justified in holding this boo boo for almost 30 years no matter the catastrophic consequences.
and here i thought they refuse to compromise because they know that if nothing improve, obama will be blamed and possibly lose his re-election. you know, republican's #1 goal since he has been in office.
oh and one more thing: immigration enforcement has been tougher under obama than it was under bush. why cant tea baggers get that through their heads. so if there is anyone 'reneging' on anything, you may want to take a look at republicans.
seriously. the fact free world that people live these days...
Tina,
Saw it and if I'm not mistaken it was set in Turkey. Turkey is in Eurasia. I'm pretty sure that the posters were referencing Western European prisons. Regardless of where the prison is you're still a prisoner.
PylarB,
RE: your post #1.3
I have no problem with your rant other than your premise that the arson suspect is in this country illegally. The article makes NO mention that he is illegally in the U.S. Also, what is that bit about Obama and our boarders. Obama has deported more illegals, BY FAR, than any other president in history (approximately 1.2 million)! What would you have him do, ride up and down our borders all day telling people not to cross or he will jail them?
The political comments on this page, well, dragging this topic into politics just reeks of stupid.
Apparently, the criminal isn't the only one who can't think straight.
"I hate America" - must be a Liberal!
Sorry, couldn't help myself:)
takenaka
I'm sure Pylar meant the Constitution which is supposed to be the basis for both our laws and the protection of the citizens from it's own government.
Obama and his supporters have used the racist BS as an excuse against people who want our borders protected and our laws enforced. As many of us have told you all many times, the illegal problem is far bigger than just those coming in from Mexico. When will the one who was allowed in illegallly bring that dirty bomb with him?
John,
Republicans did not control Congress in 1985. Congress is made up of two houses. The Senate and the House of Representatives. The Republicans controlled the Senate. The Democrats the House. The main reason President Reagan signed the Simpson-Mazzoli Act was that it included sealing the border. I agree that both parties are to blame.
@ PylarB,
first off, i love how you assume he's here illegaly. also, how is this an example of ilegals "walking" across the border? unless my geography classes were totally misled, i thought there was an ocean between us and Germany.
Seriously, it's republican states and republican extremists that have been trying to talk the people of their states into seceding from the Union, not democrats.
Sounds to me like this person committed trivial fires waiting to get caught. Life in jail is much easier in some peoples minds. Now he doesn't have to explain to or help his mother and has an excuse. Had he truly hated americans, he'd have been shooting them instead of sitting their parked cars on fire.
How about if we give him a ride about halfway back to Germany and drop him off??
I'd suggest a ride in a military transport, issuance of 1 parachute and being kicked out the back door over Afghanistan. Despite his hatred of America, he'd probably find he was too American for the locals to allow to live despite being German.
i saw the title of this article and thought: "no sh**."
TXHorseman
Haha, we can tell the German authorities that he didn't put his seatbelt on and when turbulence caused the doors to mysteriously open, the wind blew him out! Unfortunately, sharks love the taste of sauerkraut.
Scrambolo,
I wouldn't be putting those deportation numbers out there as fact without doing a little research. Those figures have been under a lot of scrutiny and all you need to do is google deportation figures and you will see a multitude of articles sayignt the figures are not accurate.
P.S. I really don't think it is pertinent to this story anyway.
So who wants to pay for his 50K+ a year stay? Meanwhile.....your job is eliminated, and then your unemployment runs out......But hey, we got him locked up. I'm sure glad we got our priorities strait.
IF that statement is true, why are the (mainly) southern and soutwestern states enacting their own laws against illegal immigration, and being sued by the federal government as a result?
Maybe the cameras cut him off, and he was really trying to say "I hate American cars."
Well. With America being the Prison state that it is: you can expect more. Forced multi-culturalism, media manipulation, corporate greed ect. Wake up and get your fat asses off the couch America. And as far as showin the door to those that are not Zionist, millions can't even venture from their county while on parole. The downward spiral for that self-righchous country that trated others as footstools. How about the Golden Rule and a return to America's beautiful roots? I hope it's not too late.
Ha. Ha. Nice to see a little humor for a change. I thought perhaps he saw all those nifty commercials about the 2012 models and was pissed off because he couldn't afford one. Or maybe he didn't have/courldn't get a driver's license. That's probably more like it. andn he was undoubtedly pissed off about his mum causinng all that trouble here in Amerika. (That he hates. Hope they send him to Germany to serve his sentence. Why should we American taxpayers keep his butt warm and night and give him three squares a dayh that many of us can't even afford?
"I hate America". Well you're going to love our prisons and our inmates are going to love you doughboy.
If this nimrod hates America, he REALLY is going to hate US prisons. Especially when he drops the bar of soap!
....he's got FIRE in the eyes too...I'm frightened...especially when he left the parking lot building...with no sign of fire-starting-paraphernalia....whooooo...haunted are we....?!
Enjoy your life in American Prisons
Just be thankful he won't be tried in Florida!
Just thinking out loud here...I wonder what lawyer will help him get out of these charges?
Judging from how immigration officials have been going so hard after immigrants I'm afraid this German guy will inspire other immigrants to do the same as he did.
ICE needs to take it easy and Congress needs to pass immigration reform just as the US has done from the beginning of its history.
Maybe because the Constitution states that only Congress can make laws affecting immigration?
Olias, what needs to be done is enforce our immigration laws, just like most other countries do. Stop the denial. The Democrats and the Obama Administration are only trying to create a larger voting base to extend their power by coddling to illegals. And like they did when forcing Obamacare down our throats, ignore those that don't agree. No compromise! Yep, that's what started this whole dysfunctional government under the Obama Administration. The left's failure to listen, to the people.
I hear you Ron
an illegal immigrant to a Liberal is an undocumented Democrat..........
The government is suing those states because they violated the US Constitution. The government's just doing its job. If you don't like it, tell the states to stop making unconstitutional laws.
*Waits for racists to start clamoring about illegal immigration*
oh no, wait, he's white...so we wont hear people clamoring about immigration.
Lanikai Ron
this isn't even true. Obama has deported more "illegal immigrants" than any other president, most of them Mexicans. You all should be applauding him. SMH.
For someone who hates America, he will be spending a lot of time here. He has "prison wife" written all over him.
Free shelter, free food, free medical, fee legal counsel... courtesy of the american taxpayer...
Here is a bunch of free stuff but only if you commit acts of violence against american citizens.... Ironic or Moronic... can't tell anymore!
No doubt.... I still think its time to return to 'old school thinking'. A trial, one appeal, if found guilty... 1 bullet and 1 gun.
I think the appropriate penalty would be a prison cell with a cellmate who's a 350-pound axe murderer (we should be able to find one SOMEWHERE, if the penal system looks hard enough) and very, VERY sex-starved. It's just too bad we can't go all Mosaic on his butt, and cover HIM in gasoline and light him off...
+100:)
Put him a cell with no heat let his dreams keep him warm.
Right. Death penalty for everything
Yup! They'll be bending him over and l0oading him like a shotgun! The problems with the goivernment enforcing our laws is due to the "TOLITICIANS"! Many of the morons in Washington can't balance their own check book! Just wait and see what they do with all that taxoayer money just laying around doing nothing! The morons will find a way to either use it for some idiotic program or they'll give it away to a country that hates us more than this clown does! Red
We can o nly hope he provides some much needed r&r for the lifers he'll hopefully encounter in the general population. Surely no private suite for sisssie-boy?
If you hate America and you are not American, don't come here. If you hate America and you are American, feel free to leave. It may be your last act of freedom.
Agreed. It makes me laugh when people state how much they hate American, yet they are currently still enjoying the freedoms this country provides. You hate it so much? You leave. Simple as that. Otherwise stop whining and try to make the best of what you can.
We have Freedoms? You mean our phones being tapped? non-stop surveillance everywhere else in public? The Patriot Act?
Well lets see. Off the top of my head I can think of the freedom of speech, freedom of religion, right to bear arms....many of which are either not allowed or heavily censored in other countries such as China, North Korea, even England. Some parts of Africa allow no independent media others have such a tight control there may as well be no freedom of speech. Some countries outlaw blasphemy against religion, others outlaw blasphemy against their own countries. Some countries still see women as second class citizens or worse, others still have slavery.
So while our country isn't perfect, there aren't any others that wouldn't have their own flaws as well, and if you do happen to find one you're welcome go to it. As I said, stop whining and try to make the best of what you can. If you don't like it, fight to change it. Our country allows that.
And Sir, America hates you, nein?
He looks like Squigy from Laverne and Shirley...
I am so sorry he hates America - but it now looks like he bought himself a first class seat into the American Legal system. Oh wiat,.. its L.A. - how long will they keep him? Going by the revolving door Lohan went through, he should be out before lunch is served...
If he hates America can someone please tell me why did he not just leave, no Americans seem to be holding him hostage.
If he doesn't like America get the hell out and stay out, that is after he finish making restitution for the damage he has caused here in America.
It wasn't ABOUT him. He "hated America" because his MOTHER was having trouble with INS. But, of course, he could always have said, "Mama, pack up your things. We're going back to Germany." Problem was, Mama didn't WANT to go back to Germany. So this moron goes and burns down the homes of private citizens, rather than going after INS offices... Didn't matter that those homeowners had absolutely nothing to do with his mother's immigration problems. I guess he was too much of a coward to go after the INS itself...
Maybe. . .he said, "I hate America" because he knows that people are tried and convicted in the media. I think I might have said, "I hate cops." The police released these little tidbits to the media for a reason. So we'll feast on this. Don't fall into the trap.
Let American justice prevail. Let him be innocent until proven guilty.
One of my pet peeves - INS hasn't existed since 2003, the Patriot Act scrapped it. Immigration is a joint responsiblity of CBP (Customs and Border Protection) and USCIS (Citizenship and Immigration Services). I get tired of people saying: "INS" in TV shows and on the news, etc. CBP do the inspections at the border, USCIS handles the paperwork for people already in the country. The State Dept. via foreign embassies handles the issuance of visas.
Another pet peeve - "he's here on a visa". You cannot be "here" on a visa - a visa is a travel document, which about 50% of people entering the US do not need as they are covered by the Visa Waiver Program or otherwise exempt (about 99.99% of Canadians for example). Once you're in the US you don't need a visa, your legal status is determined by USCIS together with immigration courts. If you break the law, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) come after you.
mother/teacher-
You make a good point.
He definitely has been tried, convicted, AND sentenced on Newsvine.
I can't decide which of his crimes they think is worse: arson or ALLEGEDLY stating that he hates America.
For the people that don't like America, please leave and take a friend with you!
yea, that will be his mom I hope
If you think you hate America now, just wait til Dwayne and Tyrone get a hold of you in jail.
Shouldn't that be LeDwayne and LaTyrone? Seems that adding French diminutives is all the rage among blacks.
ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahha....thats funny.....I don't care who u r!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Maybe its Billy Bob and Junior.
What about Bubba and his latino friend Carlito? They'll be making this guy squeal "NEIN, NEIN!!!" all night long. Too bad they will take it to mean "9 more times please!"
Bigots
How can you hate America when we brought the world Buffalo wings!?! That's on top of the whole man on the moon thing.
Yeah and they shouldn't forget we introduced deep dish pizza to the world.
Squiggy is probably a failed film maker. Either that or this whole thing is a smoke screen, no pun intended.
COINTELPRO?....
I like this guy already. I think we should just skip the trial and send him back to Germany in first class. I'm sure he had a good reason to do what he did. We just aren't being understanding of how he feels.
Oh I am very understanding of what he did, and I completely understand that you are an absolute scumbag as well. He is a psychopath that could have left America if he hated it so much...but instead he was a total p**sy psychopathic moron that instead of using intelligence and just leaving...he chose to burn down houses and cars. There was absolutely no good reason for what he did but since you think so and you like him so much, you can leave America too. One less stupid ***hole convict-supporting moron to deal with.
Alan...you don't know sarcasm when you see it, don't you? RELAX you moron.
Actually I understand sarcasm just fine, obviously you are the one with the problem dumbass.
Juan and Alan, is it really necessary to speak so rudely to each other? You only show your lack of class when you call other names, you idiots.
People like you scare me...a good reason, not been urderstanding?... like Dexter sister say "are you @!$%#ing kidding me?"
a
Kyleortonsarm
I'm sure you would've liked him more if he had set fire to your house.
He looks like a phantom case of PTSD, suffered after cooming to Amerika from his native country, maybe a Freudian Oedipal thing with mummy dearest goingn on, too. Maybe he secretly wanted to be separared from her by the governments of Germany and america (I think I read Germany requested that she be "returned" by the American authorities to Germany....but is facing a conflict, as in, Oh mummy, how will I sleep at n ight without you to tuck me in....or Oh mummy I hate you. You won't let me bed down with mynew boyfriends.
Alan,
Shut the heLL up and take your meds like mommy told you to!!!
Loads of personal attacks here, alan-1143607. Cut it out.
You are suspended for a day for violating rule # 1 of the Code of Honor.
"Galina Illarionova", who lives in the same apartment complex as the suspect, told reporters through a (Russian translat) that an agitated Burkhart visited her Sunday and said that his mother was having some kind of legal problems.
I wonder how many ilegals live, in the same apartment complex?
Why would you assume the neighbor is illegal?
Obviously, everyone who doesn't speak English is an illegal immigrant...
SoCal has MANY immigrants of Russian/former Soviet origin - legal. Especially those of "Jewish" descent, as they were never allowed to be classified as"Russian" while living in Russia. Like the old man, a Jewish immigrant from Russia told me, "My whole life I was not a Russian, but a Jew, until I move here. Now, I am Russian - in America". He tells someone in America he is from Russia, he grew up speaking Russian - to us he is - Russian. But not to the Russian "ethnic people" - to them, he is just a Jew. Life's little ironies.
Yes ironies like call the Native Indias, Americans
.. or even Indians..!
he's a sour kraut. but he'll soon get some american sausages with his bratwurst in prison.
ha ha ha - good one!
Since he hates America, send him to a Chinese prison, they will treat him with nothing but respect, NEIN.
I think you meant NICHT.
He should have known. The INS is the cruelest and most corrupt of Americas "legal" institutions. If he had wanted his mother to immigrate he would have had to hire an expensive immigration lawyer who had connections through his religious or ethnic institutions, if you get my drift.
He shouldn't judge or hate Americans based on his problems at the INS. The INS and satellite lawyer industry should have their own nationality. Burning other people's property was a life altering mistake. He jeopordized innocent people and disrupted their lives. Now he's considered an unstable mind, and a dangerous criminal.
If the INS is tearing a family apart, which they do on a daily basis, (some INS clerks seem to take pleasure in the power), go to the press...oh wait, nobody reads the newspapers any more. So sad.
I appologize Steven1. With all the bureaucratic changes and name changes, it sounds as though it's even more Byzantine.
I had a friend whose wife was Brazilian. After marriage she became an alien resident. When they traveled they always applied for travel authorization. One time, her mother was dieing of esophogus cancer, and she was near death. They went down and applied for travel authorization, but it didn't arrive in time, so she left with her daughter using her passport. He was going to send the authorization to Brazil when he received, (bad mistake). She and her daugther saw the mother one last time.
The travel authorization never arrived. He contacted the INS (1999). They told him there was a mistake on the dates, and the application would have to be refiled. He said his wife was already in Brazil. The INS said "too bad, she is 'self deported' and would have to re-apply even to enter the US". They rejected her reapplication on quota grounds. She even went to Rio and appealed to the State department employee. The agent rejected the appeal (no appearent reason) and sent the paper work to Guayaquil Ecuador where her paperwork sat for 3 more months. Nobody could help, not even a senator or congressman. Finally in desperation he went to a New York Times columnist, (Anthony Lewis), who often reported on the INS abuses. At a simple threat of another disturbing story of a torn family, the INS issued a visa, a green card and an appology, and let the family re-unify. The seperation and desperation had lasted 6 months.
I clearly remember his bitterness, but he never cracked. I also remember the stories of cold blooded INS clerks that had no inclination to help.
There is no justification for terrorist act like the arson, but I can see how the clerks at the USCIS and CBP and ICE could drive an unstable mind over the edge.
Now the truth comes out, and I am embarassed I was ready to condemn the immigration service for pushing him over the edge. It turns out his muther was a criminal being extradited. This makes his arson even more repulsive.
Send him out of the country and dump him in the worst prison in Germany, piece of garbage his name is going to be changed from "Harry" to "Terry" in the clinker. Yeah good luck there b*tch.
Idiot Americans have no idea what goes on in their prisons. I think Alan,JJ, Juan and the others have personal fantasies about love in lock up.
Oh yeah you call me an "Idiot American" yet you obviously seem to think that kind of stuff doesn't happen in prison? Get your head out of your arse, and sorry to disappoint you but I don't fantasize about lock-up love...that's obviously your thing. Btw you aren't any better than us Americans, so you can shove your ego where the sun don't shine.
Oh, so someone with a Japanese sounding name must not be an American? Tell that to the ones who got $20k each in reparations for being thrown into WW2 concentration camps - in the US.
The laady or man with the Japanese sounding name said "you Americans," so obviously she/he is not one. Don't you ever read anythiing properly? Beter to not even try because so many of these poster-nuts don't ever even comprehend what the story is all about that they are using as an excuse for their rant. By the way, can't figure out of the Japanese sounding name is saying prisons are great places for rehabilitation and are getting a bad rap and none of us idiot Americans k nows that this Really goes on there, or is she trying to say in her imperfect English that none of us realize there is raping, murder and all kinds of mayhemm in American prisons...But we DO know about it. Makes me wonder if you, Mr. or Mrs. whatever you are, has actually spent time in said prisons? And on what rap? Or are you employed by them or is your significant other an employee of the prison system? Ah, the many possibilities.
What is this, a pissing contest?
He'll probably be given an illegal czar appointment along with the rest of the muslim's anti Americans.
aftman, We need a translator to make sense of that post. Which country are you from?
He's from Fux nation. (You have to have an IQ under 40 to get in.)
Again, please?
No sense explaining to obama asskissers...libs just arent smart enough...
ATFMAN...I gather you haven't seen the so-called corporate socialists running for the GOP for 2012? When, not if, President Obama is re-elected, the first thing on our agenda is to buy up ducttape so we can shut the right wing mouths for at least 4 years. Righties never know when to shut their pieholes.
I wouldn't be saying anyone else isn't smart enough if I were you, Aftman.
I was born and raised in the Los Angeles area, out in the San Fernando Valley. It was a different world back then and everyone knew their neighbors, the kids rode their bikes to school, had combination locks, a basket, for books, lunch pail, etc.. I could go on, so many fond memories shared by the people who settled there over the years. Los Angeles has its own culture and history and is really amazing in its diversity and cosmopolitan nature. We are the big blend, a big busy place with a fast pace. Some folks thrive on the area, some are drawn to it and stay, others have a tough time with it and move away to a slower less populated place for peace and quiet.
The more I read about these freak outs, the more it seems money and desperation comes into it. I wonder if this kid would have had the ability to take his mother back to Germany on a plane, if he could have afforded it and had some back up, none of this would have come to the crazy head it did and they would be back in a more comfortable and familiar place where they are from. Just look at all this damage, the fear and anxiety, the anger.
A criminal is a criminal in any culture, yes, but far too often people get stuck in places far away from home and freak out. Part of the problem can be seen in the building resentment the person has of the hosting culture, the attitude that MY place is better than this horrible place, etc.. I really encourage people who come to the Southern California area to leave if they cannot take it and many cannot after awhile. Those who are locals, deal with it best they can and for them it is what they have always known, they know each other and have business there and belong there. For others its a great place to visit, but they would not want to live there...fine, go back home then, just go please and find a way if you get broke to get the money to fly home.
I am sure someone would have gladly loaned a few hundred to this guy for a flight or taken a collection if he would have asked for help so that he and his mom could get back home. Perhaps even the courts themselves would have had a solution. It is surprising how nice Angelinos are if you just explain a few things and reach out for help, there are solutions, even in tough times.
We see stories about how 'nice' Angelinos are in the news all the time. Thanks but no thanks...you can keep your "nice" neighbors.
Anon, I was also born in the L.A. area in the 70's and AGREE with you wholeheartedly. Unfortunately it didn't seem like a bajillion of new and unhappy transplants were about to leave anytime soon so I ended up moving away instead! :(
And Anonymous . . . we believe in fairy dust and unicorns too!!! What planet are YOU living on??? Yikes!!
Anon - I agree with you mostly. I love LA - but wouldn't want to live there. Fortunately it's an easy day trip for us, then back to suburbia we go.
Gosh Anonymous, a human comment - I agree, L.A. and its environs is not for everyone - I plan on getting out of here asap, but - I can not, even for a nano second give the perp any sympathy. There are many who think about doing damage because they're angry and hurt but don't. How are we to know the impact of his violence on the innocent? All those folks who lost their cars and whos to know the impact that loss will make on their lives? Will some loose their jobs? No, I can not, will not give that guy even a nano second of sympathy.
The Northeast has its share of problems with foreigners. But as it has always been the open door to the US for all nationalities, we don't notice it as much as other states do. My state (NJ) has a different kind of foreigner problem....pushey, shovey Noo Yawkahs with Wall Street salaries buying up homes in NJ, a state Noo Yawkahs detest, and then jacking taxes after the Noo Yawkahs remodel an older home into a Manhattan palatial mansion. It doesn't help that NJ has a wannabbe Noo Yawkah Republican governor making like Tony Soprano in every state but his own.
Well its a day later and much more information has come in. It looks like the mother was in trouble for fraudulent acts back in Germany and getting sent back and as she stated in court, "Where is my son, he is mentally ill". Its pathetic, really. So many unstable people out there. I agree Kate, this is in no way dismissible, that was a lot of very real and horrible damage that invaded people's private lives. It is hard enough as it is out there between the forest fires and earthquakes, sometimes even flooding with the El Ninos but this human made arson is like a slap in the face that is just not on. I guess they will both be doing time back in Germany. Thanks for the comments everyone, it was interesting getting the feedback. I have learned more about customs and immigration law lately too. Hang in there Angelinos and keep the soul. Glad this ordeal is over.
If he hated America before he started the fires, wait until he's serving 50 years in California's state prisons. Then he'll have something to hate about. Even really bad guys say it's a tough way to spend time. Oh, did I mention, "welcome to America" a$$hole.Enjoy your stay.
I hate America? Foreign National? Hand him over to Department of Homeland Security and try him as a terrorist!
send him to Guantanamo
One German immigrant is hassled about her legal status. Millions of immigrants from the south enter no
problem and prosper. I wonder why the "kraut" is pissed.
He won't get any jail time. He is already in removal proceedings (deportation). The Feds will just have his ass deported back to Germany, banning him from reentering the USA for 10 years. Many posters wondered why he hasn't left the country already if he hates America - it's because he is in legal proceedings which can take many years. The feds take your passport from you while you are in Proceedings preventing you from leaving the country. I know because I was in removal proceedings for 3 years before the Immigration Judge threw out my case and granted me Permanent Residency. During those 3 years of legal proceedings, it's hard not to feel animosity towards the whole legal system, especially when it involves your mother as well.
Thank you Joe, that explains a lot.
Many people have no idea of the complications of residency in the US or in other countries. I must say though, three years is a long wait, that is too long. Glad you got through okay. There is a problem about being in limbo. It is very restricting and there are many things one cannot do, such as get a job and at the same time one cannot get any benefit which means making money under the table or starving if there is no source of income from anywhere.
Mike has a point too, we used to have what was called a quota system years ago. I do not know why we ever changed it, did Reagan change that? It made great sense. I do not think Germany would be defined as an over the limit country, ie, there are not so many Germans flooding in right now and there are many over the years who have already settled over here so this should have been resolved, the kid was under pressure and freaked, we do not know what the mother wanted to do but it is likely that she may not have wanted to go back (good point by jockmom). If she would have been awarded residency, would it have cleared him, being her son? I think his age makes a difference, he is an adult, not a child dependent. Also, could the German Embassy do something to help? I find nothing wrong with pondering over solutions and hope that nothing like this happens again to my fellow Californians, friends and family alike.
To me they are nice because that is who I am and I relate to that area. Browenstein makes no sense to me in his sarcasm and I am not sure what he is on about. He must have some nice neighbors that he likes. Other than that "nice" evidently is not nice? I can do no constructive or sensible dialog with that. I do not know where Browenstein lives and again, there are people who do not like L.A.. There are also people who hate NY, London, Paris, Berlin or Tokyo...wherever. It comes down to subjective experience.
It's funny how things change and it's always for the worse. Carlos Mencia mentioned that the pilgrims didn't have a visa to enter and look what happened, native Americans, the real owners of this land, put in concentration camps called "reservations" by the thieves, massacrers that made sure they wouldn't dare rise up again. Mexicans, ditto, but with an added hypocritical bonus, they were not only the owners, but now just because they come to the land of their ancestors, the stealers call the owners "illegals." Shouldn't the government make an exception in his case? Let's remember that we brought their war crminal scientists and although they were million times worst than this poor soul, they were exempt from the same dose this "Christian and democratic" nation give to their brethren, herr nazis. If we can look past the nazis crimes, war crimes, crimes against humanity, I'm sure we could do also in this case. To tell you the truth, I don't know what this poor soul is doing here: Germany, at least the Germany I knew during four years stationed there, was thousands times better than America. Germany provides free education, free health care, unemployment and look how their economy absorved East Germany. Heckm their scientists were the ones that gave America its great military power. I don't know what he was thinking about, but let's remember that German family that took the wrong turn in one area in LA that doesn't even exist there and they were all killed by a gang. Go figure! There is a sucker born every minute.
He will be tried for arson and if convicted will have to serve his sentence. Then, upon release, he will be immediately deported. He will not get a pass for this crime, simply because he is in deportation proceedings.
I have a friend in Germany, and life there is ok, but stagnated economically. With the current economic crises in Europe - things are less stable, more Europeans may want to emigrate.
"tip from federal officials who thought they recognized the grainy figure caught on a surveillance video"
WOW! Why would the FEDS know about him? So this dude has done something before for the FEDS to know him! WTH!!!
They let the people over here knowing damn well they are up to no good!!!!
Feds say they recognised him from the surveillence picture but they were involved in the case before that. Wonder why?
This is what these people from other counties think. THEY think the laws don't apply to them and we should run OUR country to their specification and if we don't, then it's " I'll show you" mentality.
What I want to know is how did this deranged person get into this country in the first place? Does he have a record of mental and political trouble back in Germany and that he should have been on the watch list.
You know the list that all you liberal jackas*ses think is racial profiling and we should not be doing.
Maybe even some of you who had your car and homes burned out because this guy slipped through because of you undermining the very people who try to protect YOUR butt.
..."Burkhart's van had Canadian license plates".... The Canadians are far more lax in their immigration, and families can get split up. I know of an Armenian family like that, in addition to various Asian countries having that happen.
Immigration needs an overhaul, it's not right to leave families in limbo - but obviously arson is not the answer. Well, obvious to everyone but Herr Burkhardt.
Steven, you've got it backwards.
It is AMERICANS who have the "I'll show you" mentality and think every other country in the world owes us something.
Aren't we an arrogant lot?
Poor bastard. America obviously doesn't hate you; if she did, you'd be dead already.
Someone's been watching too many Steven Segal movies...
Sounds like another individual that was too entrained on corrupt U.S. politics and didn't remember to eat his daily happy meal fix.
