After 35 years, mystery 'Pie Fairy' sends WWII vet his last pecan

A Secret Santa has told an Ohio man not to expect any more pecan pies, which arrived mysteriously for 35 years, according to a report.

Willis Welch, 87, told The Columbus Dispatch that the pie that showed up at his Columbus home during the recent holiday season was accompanied by a note that said, "It has been a great ride."

The person who signed it "Pie Fairy" also wrote: "My wings are shorter now and I am a little too fat to fly anymore. But I still love you!!"

The Dispatch reported that Welch still doesn't know who was sending his perennial pastries, though whoever did it knew him well enough to know of his fondness for pecan pies.

Welch, who served with the navy in the South Pacific during World War II, believes the first one came in 1976.

His two daughters have denied any involvement.

"We kept telling him not to eat the pie," daughter Debbie Mathew, 55, of Pickerington, told the Dispatch.

But Welch ignored their advice, telling the paper "I have an insatiable sweet tooth."

he is 87.. probably the person who sends these pies are also near that age or even a bit older.. no wonder the pie affair is over. I hope that the Pie Fairy at least sends a note letting him know where his treat was coming from and they get the chance to enjoy each others company.. I love little stories like this.

What a nice story for a change! I, too, hope someone steps up and keeps the "pie fairy" tradition alive.

Love stories like this - shows me that true love still exists on earth today which is very hard to find. If she is still alive next year, I bet she will send the pie.....time will tell. Everybody should be guilty of doing this for somebody else. Maybe a little happiness in everybody's life would go a long way.....

About 20 years ago while on my way to school, saw an elderly lady on the side of the road trying to use a jack because she had a flat tire. I had to exit the highway and get back on it about a mile from where she was. I stopped and parked behind her and asked to to just get to the side of the road and I'll change the tire for her. When I was done she thanked me and tried to give me $5 for helping her. I told her no thank you because I was just giving a hand to someone who needed a little help.

What a great story! I love unclaimed charity, which is the only true charity. Wouldn't it be funny if he receives 25 pies next year from strangers? After all of those years, there really was no risk of him being harmed. I have a habit of buying extra flowers to put out at our family plots at our local cemetary just before Memorial Day, and planting them on stranger's graves no one attends to. I continue to water and pull the grass for the rest of the summer. It does much for my soul. I don't have much money but when someone in front of me at the grocery store seems to be looking for extra money to pay for their groceries, I just hand them what cash I have hand. Oh a great fun one is, when I cash in my pop cans at the grocery store and I see a parent struggling with a grade school child's temperment, I give the child my can refund slip to buy what they want. The look on the kids faces is terrific! Oh one time I had ordered a load of gravel for my driveway. All I owned was a shovel and rake to spread the gravel. It was a much bigger task then I had anticipated. I was out there for a couple of hours throwing gravel in the heat without making a dent and all of a sudden a neighbor from down the road appeared with his tractor. He told me he had gotten a new tractor and really wanted to play with it, and could he spread the gravel for me? The tears to my eyes! Ah this is what life is really about.

In the Columbus Dispatch "The pies, homemade until recent years"

With the note saying my wings are alittle shorter now and Im to fat to fly, It makes me wonder what event has happened to stop the pie fairy deliveries.

could simply be age catching up to the baker. My grandmother made THE BEST pie crust in the world. She baked a fresh pie almost every Sunday for 60 years. From the time she was 20 until she was 80. When I asked her why she stopped her very simple answer was, "I'm old." The more elaborate answer was her back, arms, hips, legs and feet hurt for a solid day after her pie making. I took over and made her and my grandfather a pie every Sunday from that point until she passed away at 85 in 2004 and he passed away at 91 in 2006. They really enjoyed it. It gave me a reason to make sure I went to see them every week and although my pie crust still isn't as good as my grandmother's it is pretty darn good.

The government should send in the CIA and use drones to track this person down. Nobody should be sending any free pies to anyone. Sales tax must be paid. That is what Repukelicans want. Tax the middle class out of existence. vote for Sanitarium and you will have a drone over every house. the pie will not be a sur pies.

This is a wonderful story of someone doing something good without expecting a reward in return. I have been touched several times in my life my a "secret santa" One time in particular when my children were very small (2 and 5) we had just moved to a small town to be near my husband who was in Basic Training in the Army Reservers. It was the week before Chrismas and all of our Christmas decorations were packed away in storage in our old home state. I came home one afternoon after washing our clothes at the local laundromat and found a decorated Christmas tree (real) on my front steps along with a gift for each of my daughters. Later I found out that the maintenance man from our mobile home park left the tree and gifts. I never got to thank him before he retired on January 1st. I will always remember the look on my daughters faces when they saw the tree and gifts. It was a christmas miracle. So some people do things without expecting something in return. I have returned a secret santa favor several times in the years since 1982.

How wonderful! He obviously made an impression on his "pie fairy." Whoever did this for all of those years was a kind individual a rarity today. I miss values and traditions.
