No more politicians, NH eatery owner says

A New Hampshire restaurant owner says he is so fed up with the flurry of GOP presidential candidates at his Portsmouth eatery that he put up his own 2012 slogan: "No Politicians, No Exceptions."

For months, politicians, their staff and news media have stormed New Hampshire restaurants during the campaign for the White House.

Seeing no sign of easing until the Jan. 10 presidential primary, Jeremy Colby, owner of Colby's Breakfast & Lunch, said he had to do something to end the circus inside his small business located near the Massachusetts border.

“There is no forewarning and all of a sudden they come in and we are overrun by cameras and blah, blah and blah,” Colby told msnbc.com. “We’re trying to run a business here and this whole meet-and-greet and vote for me deal is very distractive and disruptive, not only to our staff but to our customers.

"It’s hard and I find it very rude," he said.

Visits from Texas Governor Rick Perry and former presidential candidate Michele Bachmann sealed the deal to slap the sign on the door, he said.

“We just had had enough.”

We’re trying to run a business here and this whole meet-and-greet and vote for me deal is very distractive and disruptive, not only to our staff but to our customers.

For a group of politicians that claim to understand business, one would think that they would know that they were disrupting the flow of commerce in this establishment.

I love it! What a fantastic illustration of how thoroughly clueless politicians are about the day-to-day realities of average working Americans.

I'd also surmise it's no coincidence that visits from the respective Bachmann and Perry campaigns "sealed the deal," on Mr. Colby's new policy ;)

Unlike the Democrats, who want to eat into your wallet, the Republicans prefer to eat real food (and they actually pay for their own meals).

As a business owner, a few hours of disruption in 4 years seems a fair trade for the publicity. You usually get a picture in the local paper - at minimum.

I also get the feeling he's one of those cranky types. You know, the type that think customers are a burden.

Of course, it's his private business, so he can choose who he wants to serve.

Except for Heman Cain - he can't barre him from eating there.

Now, if Jermey Colby were an overpaid, robber baron head of say, ADM or Bank of America, the pols would never consider invading his business. They'd send their minions to ask what legislation or deregulation is wanted.

And pick up a check of course.

Ryan - and what if you dont get your name and photo in the paper, and they dont buy anything more than a single sandwich while there?

Still worth it?

Cuz something tells me these politicians arent spending money in these establishments, just thinking like you are..."my presence is profit enough for you, you're welcome"...

Everything is bigger in texas, including ego..and ignorance.

Ryan in Texas- why am I not surprised by your comment. Yes they pay for their meal. One- the staff does not eat but takes up space, the media does not eat but takes up space and all this takes hours not the seconds we see on television.
As for free advertising- what the story tells the locals is - "Don't come here - we have no room for you."

This invasion of space may be Texas, but it's not the rest of the country.

Jessica - He mentioned the problem was all the CAMERAS and REPORTERS.

Cameras take pictures.

Reporters report on things such as the location.

Undoubtedly, if they take a picture in there, and they run it, they will put a caption by the picture.

That's free publicity. Have you ever priced an ad in papers? It ain't free.

And if you are lucky, you might get the front page on hundreds of papers. YOU CAN"T EVEN BUY THAT!

This guy understands that he can't block Obama, Cain, or any minority politician.

So really, he will only block white politicians.

Well, isn't that nice - this guy singles out white politicians - does he make them eat around bacK?

Time to boycott Colby's. Proven racists who only block white politicians from eating there.

All they ever say is "A restaurant in (enter name of city here)" and sometimes they don't even get the freaking city right! But you go right on thinking having people tromp in, bother his patrons, tromp out and not buy anything is one huge windfall for the guy. But they're Republicans so they can do no wrong, right? Ryan, do you think publicity means anything to an establishment in such a small town? Everyone in town probably already eats there and nobody is driving from long distances to eat there just because Rick Perry ate a sandwich there at some point. All things do in a business such as this one, is create havoc for the rest of the customers. I applaud the man for standing up for his regular customers.

@Ryan in Texas -- I make my living in marketing. So let's dissect your points re: Mr. Colby's issues with reporters and cameras.

"Reporters report on things such as the location." Yup. And his target market -- the local people in this small town -- already know the location. So who cares what they report?

"Undoubtedly, if they take a picture in there, and they run it, they will put a caption by the picture. That's free publicity. Have you ever priced an ad in papers? It ain't free." Nope, it ain't. But unless you're a celebrity/famous for being famous, the purpose of publicity is to get more business, not just to get your name out there.

"And if you are lucky, you might get the front page on hundreds of papers. YOU CAN"T EVEN BUY THAT!" Right, but why would he want to? There aren't hundreds of newspapers in NH, which means the people seeing the photo on the front page on hundreds of newspapers don't live nearby and probably won't ever get to small town NH to patronize his eatery. So again, who cares?

Meanwhile, the locals who are his target market can't get in the door, so they're going to go elsewhere, and maybe they won't come back to his place. But you think he should inconvenience his loyal customers and give up their business for the sake of free publicity on the front page of some Ohio newspaper to be seen by people who will never contribute to his bottom line.

On the other hand, he can give up his "free publicity" and show loyalty and consideration for his local customers by not having them turned away or unable to eat in peace. Maybe it's different in Texas, but NH locals aren't all that impressed when Perry or Bachman stop by for a photo op. Sounds to me like he's not the cranky type who thinks customers are a burden. So people like me, who don't live too far away, might even go there and spend our money just to show our support for his approach. Hmmm. . . free publicity, or concern for customers? Seems pretty clear which has the better impact on Mr. Colby's bottom line.

I'm not even going to address your comment that he's singling out white politicians since it's obvious that your comprehension and logic skills are on a par with your marketing expertise -- overblown, unrealistic, and related solely to your own agenda.

Ryan- If the sign said "no politicians" that would include them all, even the president, right? He made no specifics to any color or race. Do you run a business? Do you have any idea what it take to run a business or a company? If you do, do you work locale in just your town, city or county that you live in? If you are not a state wide or even a national business how much do you really do know? If you only work in the area that you live in, how much would you like to have all these people barging in and running off your regulars? I own and run a company and work thru-out the whole state that I live in, so what good what it do me to have people in several other states calling me wanting me to come and work for them when I cant? Kind of a waste of every-ones time, energy and money, don't ya think?

Never mind dissecting Ryans points. First point is that they are irrelevant. This is Jeremy's business. He is free, in this country, to run it how he wants. He does not have to like any free publicity he may get, he is free to determine how much profit he made from the visits, and decide for himself if it was worth the hassle it caused him. When Ryan wants to open his own restaurant, he can take those points he made into consideration for himself, and make the decision for himself. That is one of the main problems with people like Ryan. They think they have some sort of god-given right to second guess the decisions that everyone else makes, and make themselves the self appointed experts, without having any of the facts and information the other person has.

Damn, does "lighten up" go without saying here?

You all sound as cranky as this cafe guy.

So we can't second guess people's decisions on Newsvine now? I make a note of that.

There are only a few candidates. They didn't all go to his place. And they stay about 30 minutes, tops.

So maybe 3-4 hours in 4 years.

He has a right to block any white politician he wants, but really, it's making a mountain out of a molehill.

I guess I'm not so jaded as to think that I wouldn't like shaking hands or having a word with the next President. I guess we are just alot more friendly down here.

If they don't want one of the first primaries up in NH, I'm sure some other state will be happy to accept the "burden" of it. All the publicity, all the advertising money - getting a larger say than a tiny state like NH should have in the process.

Around here, the guys running restuarants would get a picture with the candidate and proudly display it when they are President.

Of course, the food is very good around here - so we would want to expose it to as many people as possible. Including the dreaded reporters and politicians. Maybe that guy in NH just is afraid one of them will make a bad face when they eat his slop. Or perhaps a picture will show his plates looking nasty.

You know I'm just kidding, right?

I don't blame the guy, and I bet they do get tired of being treated like pawns when the royalty comes around to use their business and their customers as a backdrop. Maybe he should allow the politicians but NOT the media and cameras. I suspect none of the politicians would bother coming it at that point because they REALLY don't want to interact with the folks there, they just want PICTURES of them interacting with the folks there.

Ryan,

The best thing you could have done is be quiet. Take it from a person who spent 14 years in restaurant work including management. You want to take care of your regulars and locals. You proudly open your doors to new customers in hopes they also will become regulars.

When you are flooded with non-paying "customers" such as the press who only show up to get their story and leave, you have to spend your hard earned cash cleaning up after them. That is OK if you get a return on sales but this guy clearly isn't getting that return. You are also foresaking your dependable sales group to take care of these folks who aren't there to use your facility and maybe become a repeat customer. This guy probably wants to preserve his local business and isn't getting a return on his investment and he is sick of it.

I have to think that MSNBC is running this story into an anti GOP story which the Vine crowd is quickly picking up. I think it is a judgement upon the press and that includes MSNBC. Flip the tables with a GOP president and the DNC in a primary battle and the story would be exactly the same. It seems that there was a story about DNC candidates 4 years ago leaving a disaster of unpaid bills and economic damage to individual business owners in their wake during their primary fight in 2007.

The moral of the story is that the press are a bunch of whores, politicians like media whores and they will both step on anyone to get their slutty funk on.

LOL... wow, you are funny today.

    1) "Have you ever priced an ad in papers? It ain't free." Actually it's almost free... Why? Because NO ONE reads papers anymore. They are a dying business. Do you know what medium costs 100 times more than an ad in the paper? An ad on the front page of MSN... which his defiance towards politicians has earned him. So, in actuality, he received a great value by excluding them and getting on the MSN homepage.

Seriously... you bring up "papers"? LOL. Who the f*** reads "papers" anymore besides those with one-foot in the grave, and the inbreed morons who are too stupid to turn on a computer. "Papers"... God damn, you're funny.

The "don't mess with Texas", trigger-happy, execution-cheering people are considered "friendly"? LOL. Or maybe YOU are claiming to be "friendly"... LOL. Please. now with a big time restaurant i can see where this would be good for publicity

The sign itself, might cause some issues (even though he owns the restaurant) with the EOC; of course once the lawyers step in, causes the restaurant to fall, or have to change names.

As far as advertising, this guy has plenty of it now that he's gone on the internet blogs. He should make sure His host/hostess/greeter (or cashier) knows, NO CAMERAS allowed in a private business without previous approval from the owner, so they have to wait outside, and off the property. Preferrably on a public sidewalk, or parking lot, not blocking another business from operation.

The bad idea from another restaurant owner was, raise the cost of the meals, which is ridiculous, but charging the TIP fee for parties over 8 is reasonable, and should be enforced, REGARDLESS of the politicians assistants having a glass of water or coffee only.

His regular and loyal customers of course will be inconvenienced for a day, or two, but in every restaurant I've run, or bought into, The good ones return, because of the exceptional service we give, which includes shutting down and rebuilding after Katrina, Floods, Frozen Pipes after an Ice Storm, rebuilding after a Tornado and the Occasional CAR RALLY Show that closes off the entire city block on the weekends we had them at Sonic (The business in our area actually showed increased customer activity after the car shows as well). It actually served to INCREASE revenue, profit, and grew our business.

That also doesnt mean, that IT doesnt SUCK when a Bus Load of Tourist arrive at 2pm on a monday and you have minimum staff on hand, but THAT is the food business, and you HAVE to learn to flex with it. That is all part of the Restaurant business, I call it RUSH PERIODS, and WAVE PERIODS. The Rush we expected, the WAVE is when the customers just come in waves out of no-where.

What a moron. Did this man ever take a business class? Its obvious he is banning them from his restaurant because they are republicans. He just killed himself 2x over by 1. giving any conservative or political supporter a good reason not to eat there, and 2. he just ruined a good chance at getting local publicity. (while its obvious he is getting publicity now, most people reading this live around the country and won't be visiting his place anytime soon, whereas someone reading the local paper and seeing his restaurant in the pictures would be more likely). Its his decision though, so who cares?

For every Iowan and New Hampshireite crying crocodile tears over all the news coverage (and money) coming into their state, there's a hundred spending tax money in court defending their rights, as splinter groups of lunatics, to be the VERY FIRST to "CHOOSE THE NEXT LEADER OF THE FREE WORLD". For myself, I'm sick to death of the sanctimonious yahoos, down to "Dirty Joe's Slop Shop", who have taken it upon themselves to eliminate all but 1-2 major party candidates. They spent millions of tax dollars defending this nonsense 4 years ago, let'em choke on it!!! Just sayin...

That's rather presumptuous of you. Perhaps he is just a business owner that is sick of politicians using his establishment as a free forum hall. Contrary to what you might think, not every person in this country falls within party lines. Many of us are sick to death of both Dem's and Rep's, and if this man has had enough of politicians spraying their verbal feces all over his restaurant, I can't say that I blame him one bit.

You infer that? You know it for a fact? You own a diner and would welcome in any political candidate at any time?

So it's fair that every candidate can imply a person's support simply by invading their diner with the cameras rolling?

How about you take a man's word instead of projecting your assinine views into this discussion? Who cares what his politics are? imagine a restaurant filled with people taking photos and not buying. They are occupying space and space is money. Ask yourself this if you were eating and the windows are fluttered with people trying to take pictures thru the windows, would you find it disturbing? If it becomes a regular thing, you may not come back for a while to eat. Repeat customers make up 80% of business revenue and getting new customers that aren't repeats, take a lot of effort and cost alot.

LOL, anyone who brings actual party side into this is a dumbass. Both democrats and republicans are complete and totally liars and cheats. ESPECIALLY obama and gingrich. Obama is a WORTHLESS president, and i guarantee all the republican candidates are also worthless. By the way, anyone who is taking shots at other parties, fox news or beliefs in science is a dumbass also. I also love that all the hype back when obama was running came out to be false. All of you are bashing politicians, yet you all are the ones who vote for them. Propaganda and the 'cool' look of obama wasn't enough to bring this country back, huh? Choose your votes wisely this time :) stop blaming the politicians, it is our fault.

I also enjoy the fact that many of you are saying that if politicians came to your restaurant, you would be furious. That is a lie. I guarantee more than half of you would thoroughly GUSH if Obama showed up at your doorstep, republicans and democrats alike. It is easy to say that you wouldn't over the internet where no one can see you. "Oh, Mr. President, you are doing a WONDERFUL job at keeping this country in order! Just love that you are patching everything up just right. Can i please shake your hand so your perfection could rub off on me. I mean, the past 3 years you haven't ACTUALLY made any useful contributions, but I am going to reelect you because i bet you are just late bloomer! You will do a fantastic job the second time around, you are just much to cool and my kids see your wife's face all over disney channel trying to make a change in recycling and I think it is just completely amazing. You are such a great, strong family unit which is why i believe you are a great president." Gosh, that about sums up what everyone still believes about our hopefully-soon-not-to-be president.

Alienating a section of your customer base is really a smart move. The guy is obviously a democrat which is completely fine but if he thinks that running a successful resturant means shutting the door to paying customers who don't share his point of view than he won't be in business that long.

What people fail to realize that in today's 24/7 electronic media, there is NO editing before posting. Just look at all of the incomplete sentences or misplaced words, etc. that appears in almost every online news media....not just here on msnbc.com (especially since most of their stories are just postings from other media.)

                        As an example:

For months, politicians, their staff and news media have stormed New Hampshire restaurants during the campaign for the White House.

This should correctly have been .....their staff, and news media... according to the grammar I learned back in the 50's and 60's.

                        for warning???

how about "There is no forewarning"?

Yes, thank you for clarifying this. NOW the whole article makes sense. I just couldn't follow what was going on before your insightful correction. It is such an important and critical detail the rest of the world could not have figured out without your help. Thank you again. :|

Grammar is just as important as spelling.

For you self righteous white ppl, you did nothing to earn being born white.... nothing. You were just lucky like I was. It has nothing to do with anything. So get off your high horse. Also to you righties, why don't you ppl stop gripping and being the VICTIM! We are not victimizing you! You do it to yourselves! If you believe you are the victim, then you are. If you take pride in who you are and stop whining, "He's picking on me!" you might find some good here in the USA. And if anyone wants to edit this post go right ahead, I think the message out does the grammer.

Here's a thought--whenever you get campaign mail with a prepaid envelope, fill the envelope with as much heavy stuff that you can find, and mail it back. It costs their campaigns and offices money when you do that. For robo calls, just leave the phone off the hook for as long as possible. You need not listen to it, but the longer you can keep them tied up, someone else may be doing the same for you. Got a real person on the phone calling? (It does happen). Tell them that this is a "charge" line, and you charge $9 per minute, 10 minute minimum. You will need their Visa, MC, or Discover card number to continue this call. The time started when you picked up the receiver. For $90, I'll listen to 10 minutes of gibberish. (Be sure to speak very slowly, too. Add up those minutes.) Ask for a callback number, and you only take cell numbers. Post the cell numbers at roadside rests for anyone to have a "good time." Be creative. From the looks of most of the posts here, I think it's time to turn the tables.

That "do not call" list is not working so well is it!!! They even get your cell number and want to call right at dinner time or when your trying to go to bed. Wish we could get their home numbers and hassle them right back. Good idea putting the 3 year old on the line though. THat was funny.

A friend got a call from a telemarketer selling some "all purpose cleaner". His response was, "will it clean 'DNA' stains out of carpeting?" The young-sounding lady stammered and stuttered and said "what?" He said "if it will clean 'DNA' stains out of carpeting, I'll buy a five-gallon pail right now because there is nothing my old lady likes to do more than F in the middle of the living room carpet." Suddenly there was a click and a dial tone - the telemarketer hung up.

Politicians are public nuisance. Their agenda is to get elected for their own financial gain, nothing more. They know that once they're elected, huge sums of money will start flowing their way. Kudos to this small business owner for telling them all to take a hike.

have you lost your mind? We have to have a government. Can you imagine the chaos? Not every pol has his hand out. That is negative thinking. Try having having a positive thought and see if you feel better. It may take some time, since you have probably been the victim for years. Why don't you run for office with a positive campaign, and do it to help our country. Then you would know there is at least one person in office that really cares about America. You could start small and learn as you go! think about it!

I don't need to "reserve" the right to keep out whoever I don't want, I just simply "HAVE" the right. If you own a business, quite simply put it is your right to do business with who you want. What you CAN'T legally do any more is hire who you want, or make too much money without competition. You also can't eliminate a potential employee for any kind of undesireable traits, such as poor credit or massive debt, because you are not allowed to assume that someone who can't manage money or is in very bad financial shape might do a poor job handling YOUR money or *gasp* might be tempted to steal your money to help themself out of their financial situation. If your company is bigger, you not only can't eliminate the unqualified people from your choice of potential employees, you might be forced to hire one who is less suited to the job simply because you don't already have enough of his race, creed, color (or whatever the correct term is) already on your staff.

BUT, aside from this, you still have the right to kick someone out of your place of business for whatever reason you choose, whether it is because you think his breath stinks, you don't like his choice of socks, you don't like his accent, or even if you don't like what he does for a living.

Oh, I see how this works. This restaurant owner is sick of GOP Presidential Candidates coming to his establishment. Would he be as sick if Obama showed up there? Did the restaurant owner single out the GOP candidates or was it the 'Failed grammar and spelling in grade school' writer of this article, Sevil Omer? We all know how fair the media has been to the GOP. Now that the restaurant owner has brought attention to his business, I hope he loses business now. I'm sure he didn't give coffee and doughnuts to everyone who showed up so someone paid for something, I'm sure.

Oh, get off your high horse and READ, Sueb. The sign said "NO POLITICIANS" - it didn't specify a party. It's just that Perry and bachmann were - quite understandably - the final straw.

At restaurants in Iowa they gave up on trying to serve food during these clownfests because the journalists around the candidates made it impossible for the waitresses to actually serve food to customers. Bunch of Republican business killers.
