Call him 'speedy': Baby born on commuter train

A New Jersey woman on her way to the doctor gave birth to a baby boy on a train. TODAY.com's Richard Lui reports.

NEW YORK -- Maybe they should have called him Hudson.

A  New Jersey husband and wife are the proud parents of a bouncing baby born on the PATH train Monday morning.

The expectant couple took the train from Harrison, N.J., to the city at about 10:30 a.m. Monday because the soon-to-be mother felt pain. She thought it was a false labor because the pain was not as severe as she was told childbirth would be, the couple said.

As it happened, the woman, who did not give her name, gave birth to a son on the floor of the PATH train as it crossed New Jersey to Manhattan.

"I was like, 'What is going on?' Something is happening every two minutes.' And then I felt the baby come out. I could feel something coming out. I wasn't sure if it was the baby," the woman said.

After her husband confirmed she was indeed having the child, the woman said "something else took over."

"I lost all sense of consciousness and I was only thinking about the baby," she said.

The new parents said they wanted to withhold their names publicly until they had the chance to tell their friends and family the good news. But they did share their new nickname for their little bundle of joy: Jhatpat.

That means "quick" or "speedy" in  Hindi, the duo said.

Jhatpat indeed.

JohnSmith,

Not in Manhattan. Ever been there? Thought not. You're ignorance is so glaring.

You are the one who is ignorant (about spelling besides society - you need the possessive your, not the contraction you're). Yes, NYC has a lot of problems, but I have also been helped by strangers countless times in big and small ways while I lived in the city and when I have visited.

And some how this turned into a race issue. So glad mom and baby are ok. I would hope the fellow bus riders would smile later in the day realizing they were there when this baby started it's life. I just wonder what they put on the birth certificate. Was it born in New Jersey or New York technically? Child birth for me not that easy. I worked with a lady that's first child was born in the hospital elevator- 5 contractions. 2nd born in ambulance- 3 contractions. 3rd born on her couch. The parents have integrity, wanting to keep their names out of it till telling their families. Good luck and happiness to all.

Anyone who has ever traveled on PATH betweenn Hoboken NJ and New York City can tell you her giving birth to a baby on this train is somewhat akin to giving birth in the back of a garbage truck. Only difference is the garbage truck is probably cleaner and smells better! Glad the baby is doing well!

I read the baby was born between the 23rd and 33rd street stops, so NY seems the likely birthplace on record.

Also appalled at the ignorance of JohnSmith - how about some common sense? You are sadly mistaken if you think you can drive from that part of NJ to that part of Manhattan (Morningside Heights) faster than public transportation. It's not like she knew she was in labor, just wanted to go see her doctor because she thought it was false labor. I would have done the exact same thing - no way I would want to be trapped in one of the tunnels in my car if I had medical concerns.

Absolutely! It drives me crazy when people make comments about a place they have clearly never been - or at least never ventured out of Times Sq. I live in Mornningside heights on 106th btwn west end and riverside heights. No way I'd drive unless I'm traveling upstate and even then, I might take Metro North train depending on where I am going.

I agree, ManhattanGrrl! I once fainted from heat on a stuck subway car. The people around me helped me, put me on a seat, one person said loudly, "I have her purse, everyone", they interrupted their trips home from work by helping me off when we finally moved and got to a station and they didn't leave me until someone from the station to check on me, and they handed that person my purse to make sure that I did not lose it.

    New Yorkers are great.

"The new parents said they wanted to withhold their names publicly until they had the chance to tell their friends and family the good news". I would think the photograph released would pretty much identify them to family and friends. Either way, good luck to the new parents and baby son.

Think of the money they saved, not giving birth in a hospital!

The ignorant bigots writing on this board are very sad creatures.

This is a happy story with a wonderful outcome. It's refreshing not to read about deaths, scams etc.
