Strip club apologizes for using Martin Luther King Jr.'s image in flier

MIAMI -- When Martin Luther King Jr. said he had a dream, this likely wasn't what he meant.

A flier promoting a Miami strip club's "I Have a Dream Bash" featuring MLK holding wads of cash next to scantily clad women has its creator taking plenty of flak.

Miami Beach graphic designer Jeffrey Darnell Paul says he didn't realize the flier, made for The Office strip club at 250 Northeast 183rd Street, would generate the controversy it has.

"I wasn't trying to disrespect anybody ... it wasn't on my mind that it would escalate to something like this," Paul told NBC Miami Monday. "It was just supposed to be a promotional thing, it wasn't about disgracing Martin Luther King, it wasn't about that."

Read the original story on NBCMiami.com

Paul, who owns and runs South Side Graphix, said he makes fliers for the club every Sunday and that he made the King flier about a week ago for the club's promoters.

"It was proposed to me like a birthday bash for Martin Luther King, I put a flier together without thinking about the effects it would have," said Paul, who is also known as DJ Big Boy. "It's something that I really didn't think about."

Paul said the bash, which was supposed to begin at 8 p.m. Sunday and end at 6 a.m. Monday on MLK Day, was canceled after he realized the flier was inappropriate. He said by then, the flier was making the rounds on the Internet and he was getting lots of negative feedback.

"I got plenty of phone calls, plenty of phone calls ... people calling from Chicago, Ohio, California," Paul said. "If I could've, I would have taken it back ahead of time."

"What was I thinking? Promotion," Paul told NBC Miami.

The strip club's management sought to distance themselves from the promotional effort on Monday, however.

“This is the first time seeing it. This is the owner's first time seeing it," The Office manager Jermaine Robinson said. "So we don’t condone this. This is Martin Luther King. We respect what he did. Today is the day for us to honor him.”

Robinson said the flier is "definitely disrespectful, to be honest with you."

Paul said there's no one to blame but himself.

"I apologize about it, I'm taking full responsibility," he said. "I wish it could have gone down a different way but I'm learning from it and trust me, I'm not going down that route again."

Some people spend their lives constantly looking for opportunites to get "offended" and play a minority card, even if they're not part of the minority group but do it anyway for the sake of being PC. The ironic thing is I believe that King wanted his people to rise above the status of being victims.

Oh please, don't get me started on the whole victim mentality thing! You are right on target and on so many levels. If only the people he was leading understood their role and mission in overcoming instead of waiting for the government to entitle them to everything. Life's pleasures and treasures are so much sweeter when actually earned.

They didn't even show a copy of the flier, what kind of sh!t is that? It was for a strip club after all, you know, a good christian sort of activity to indulge in on a Sunday night. People seriously need to get over themselves. People called from California, Chicago, etc. etc. Really? Hahahahaha, way too funny.

YELDARB27 You and your comment are asinine. You make it as though every Black person is on welfare or government assistance. There are far more Whites on welfare than Blacks. Get you story straight if you believe all of us want hand outs. Many of us rely on ourselves and not the government for anything. We own our own businesses and if we would frequent our own establishments more we will make each other stronger. So your argument, again is asinine.

Shoot all the whiny Conservitards that scream about "political correctness" has gone too far, say my avitar is offensive to them. So to use MLK's image to promote a strip club is wrong!!!

Unfortunately we live in a nation of two faced opportunists: they will bash another race and when their race gets bashed they jump up and down, calls the papers, get in front of a camera, whatever opportunity they can take to get noticed.....as a fool. It was a mistake, the dude probably wont do it again, especially after making headlines but on the flip side of it, how many other promotional fliers are out there, commercials, billboards that put a race on it that someone (and I am sure someone is) would get offended by? Lots and lots because some people need a hobby!

Keep your nose in your business, worry about your welfare and if you feel that your race is being disrespected AND someone is getting hurt because of it.....then do something about it instead of jumping up and down, threatening or running in front of a camera because that does little for your credibility. Educated ones take a winning approach and remain calm and solve the issue. If you want to see those that have no interest in doing something to solve a problem, watch the news and see who jumps in front of the camera yelling and screaming because that will tell you who only wants to be emotional and not actually come up with a viable solution.

Watch the news and see, I speak the truth. Should our American icons be portrayed in a respectful manner? Absolutely! This was in bad taste and hopefully will not happen again.

G-man and Alison - you are the problem with the country, you are looking for a way to be offended and say you or someone else is being discriminated against. I grant you that there are still backword people in this country but always calling it out and calling for equal rights let along minority compisation is not the way to move on and truely be equal. And don't even go to the they are owed something because past generations suffered in the past. The majority of americans never owned slaves or even lived in a area that had slaves and never discriminated against anyone, the same can not be said to the heritage countries of most of people that came here (i.e. most black slaves were sold by black non slaves from their on country, many of which still allow levels of slavery).

If this image were of Lincoln, Washington, and Jefferson on Presidents day...everyone would have gotten a good laugh. Only the massive chip on the shoulder of some in the black community prevents this from being an innovative promotion.

People you all really need to learn more about history. The africans took other africans as slaves and sold them to the highest bidder, which turned out to be white men who in turn sold them to others if the so called african americans want to complain about thier ancestors being slaves then they should go to africa and complain to the africans because it was thier own people who sold them. As for MLK meaning no disrespect but from what I can tell of most black preachers I have met they would have been first in line at the strip club. I am not saying all of them are like that but thier morality is a little different than what they would have you believe. MLK really didn't do a whole lot of reforming, and nothing really significant , just got out there in the publics face and tried to change the way people think!

Why take false offense? This story has much in common with the true history of MLK. It is common knowledge that he spent lots of money on prostitutes with his prefernece being White ones. Also, it is common knowledge that his doctoral thesis was as fake as the boobs of half the strippers at the club.

    Are we supposed to continue to call this cheating, plagiarizing whore-monger a hero? Look, we are talking about the failures of one man that everyone is afraid to criticize, even though the facts are the facts. He made a lot of money stirring up the cities he went into, knowing that riots would break out as soon as he left. This is historcial fact;

It's amazing that we can call David Dukes the racist charletan he is, but hands off Martin? Give it up already. When are you going to start living by the color blindness you demand from Whites unless it is convenient for us to see color? When is "Black Power" and "Brown Pride" going to become as archaic terms as the KKK is?

If you are going to get angry, get angry about something important, not something that shows a trace of truth. Get angry about Warren Buffet demanding we pay higher taxes while he fights against his own billion dollar tax bill in Federal court. Get mad at the unions, but public and private sector costing all people jobs while themselves getting fat as pigs. Get mad that our young people dying in wars or just as bad, killing people that we had no recent problems with because some international entity like the UN told us to. Get angry about the Obama's living big while demanding that everyone, Blacks included, go out and shoulder the burdens of their neighbors. He has a golf outing or a multi-million dollar family vacation to go on.

Of course, now is collapse time, as we must hide what we do not like, regardless of the validity of the statement.

Frank, I think its different to use hitler. hitler represents bitterness and pain to most reasonable people, and to use his image as a "promotion" would be offensive to reasonable people. MLK represents the opposite message, a positive message, and it should not be a problem for people to associate themselves with that kind of image.

    @Fred4Congress

Your comments are so misguided that it is actually sad.

You think attacking someone's character is going to take away the social good they do? The enormous needed systematic changes?

Nah. It won't change what Ghandi did for his people, or the forthright way Kennedy led our country, or the wise words of some of our forefathers, like Jefferson.

Men are not perfect, don't you know that by now? They are deeply and utterly flawed but when they do great deeds, deeds that lift people up from servitude and that bring them back their dignity that is what should be the focus.

But, hey, I'm all about leaving the names out of things so the 'idea' or the 'deed', so to speak, will stay pure but that's not the way it works for us humans because we are inspired by great people and good deeds and, arguably, we are all potential leaders in our hearts...We can all potentially do good for all, not just for ourselves. We only need choose to do it.

Fred, not all Africans sold africans to the Europeans. Some Europeans went over and took them as well. So don't blame the entire slave trade on Africans when Europeans did their mess too.

As for this situation, I thinks it's actually kind of funny. We all know that MLK was not perfect.

As a black woman from Louisiana, I can't stand David Duke, but at least I know he can't stand me, he's honest about it unlike so many others. Also, please be aware that white folks are capable of bad things just like black folks and everybody else. If white folks don't do bad things, explain to me everytime I get on the internet or watch the news, I see white folks killing their whole families, white kids missing, etc. Don't get me wrong, I see black folks, latinos, etc getting in trouble too, but not like the white folks who are on the news/internet daily. Also, what does MLK have to do with the Black Panters? Nothing.

As for the certain segment of the population who believes he was a cheater and a documented womanizer..... Your "proof" comes from a very powerful man (at the time) who was a cross-dressing, self-admitted racist who wanted to destroy MLK.

Oh..... And I find it very funny that conservatives in the party of Lincoln would take ANYTHING that a man like that, had to say with any amount of credibility....

Just like Tiger Woods, people around King covered up his many affairs. And it didn't get into the media for the same reason Tiger Woods affairs were kept silent for years.

It has been scrubbed from history books - at the same time Kennedy's affairs and Jefferson's possible love child were put in.

Let's be honest - black don't want equality - they want preferential treatment.

Just think about Obama - the property he bought from the felon Rezco at a discount, his friend and fundraiser Ayers - a convicted terrorist, and 17 years in "Rev." Wrights "Church" (but never hearing any of the anti-American things said there). The media would have had a field day with any one of those stories if he were white. Instead, they barely reported it until conservative tv/radio people brought those issues to the American people.

They have no problem with Affirmative Action being used to benefit less qualified Blacks over Whites.

MLK was a cheater. It's really hypocritical to call yourself a Reverend, but then to hook up with ladies a few rooms down from your wife.

People that are offended by this are just those typical people that wake up every day searching for something to be offended about so they can cause a stink.

To quote Ozzy "I am sooo tired so tired" of people doing stupid stuff and then appologize. How could he have not known that this would be taken as an insult ??? It happens alot. Saying something and then saying oh I didn't know I'm sorry. I'll admit I LOVE strip clubs and thought about it as a promotion, then I'm ok with it until I read what the picture of King was doing, then no that's assanine.

Sometimes people (normal people anyway) do things without thinking, much less thinking about any fallout such as being called a disrespectful, moron racist etc. Without thinking OH if I do this..people are going to throw tantrums over how not PC this is. Sometimes its' about promotion without realizing all the potential fallout. So impressed that some on this site have such great pyschic powers that they know exactly what others are thinking and what motivates them!! Wow folks, why aren't you making $$MILLIONS$$ with that talent??

I want to be able to voice my opinion on this, not as a person of "white" descent, not as an american citizen, but simply as a human being. Martin Luther King was a great man, one of the few that history will remember for the rest of our race's life...possibly beyond that as well. He helped with so many things and his "I Have a Dream" speech was, and still is, one of the most influential moments of American History in IT'S time, and in our current time.....but this is overreacting. Mr. King was a man who wanted ALL of us to be treated equally, he did not want any specific person or group, or TYPE of people to be over another like it was back then, he wanted us to be able to deal with our problems as the seemingly "accepting but responsible" people that we are. Do I approve of this image that was done of him? Of course not, I strongly DISAPPROVE of it, but the fact of the matter is that there is NO reason that something like this should have been as negatively impacted as it is right now. It IS something to fuss over and become agitated at, but there are SOOOOOOO many other more important things to worry about right now.

If Mr. King saw this now, do you know what he might do? I sure don't, and neither do ANY of you because the only one that WOULD know with 100 percent certainty is MLK himself, that being said though, what I BELIEVE, in my own OPINION, is that he would become offended, but then, as long as it would not negatively impact his work that was doing so much good, he would leave it be. I can understand how people might become offended by this. But what about when companies like Apple use to use photos of Ghandi and Mr. King and such for their IPOD photos? Where they were posing but with IPods in their ears? Is that on the same level as this? Most likely not, but the fact of the matter is that it was their IMAGE, not they themselves, that was taken out of context, which is what this is all about. On a follow up note to that, there have been many MANY various versions of what Martin Luther King would act like and think of current day America. I remember as a child there was this cartoon movie special, can't remember the name, where this African-American boy would go back to the past and bring back a teenage MLK, but because of that happening, his bff, a Caucasian boy, hates him and is bff's with the african-american boys worst enemy, and everything is the same from when MLK was a child and teenager. On top of that is the episode of the Boondocks which looks into an alternate timeline where instead of dying, Mr. King simply goes into a coma and wakes up 40 years later to see what has become of not just the African American community, but of the United States in total, and for those who know him, Rummy's comment in another episode with regards to something about MLK? This I am unsure of because I don't watch that much television lately. But it was something about how the word N*gger is used, I use an asterisk not because I don't want to use the word, but because this is a public forum where children can get on, or at the very least, young teens could, and I'd rather not show them vulgar language.

But the fact of the matter was that in one particular episode, Rummy quoted saying that a N*gger was not a "black" man, but was used by him as a term for ignorant m***erf***ers, and any person, of ANY race can be one of those, which would, in my opinion, defeat the term of it being a racial and discrimanatory term.

I end my comment on that note, but if I have offended anyone by my comment, I sincerely apologize for that, but as long as we live in the United States, then by law, I have the freedom of speech....that is unless SOPA and PIPA pass.

What happened to the First Amendment? Last time I checked this is still America and everyone has the Freedom of Expression. I know the Muslim faith forbids any images of Mohammad, but since when has MLK become a figure off limits to artistic expression or parody? I don't mean to diminish or mock the work he did in his life, but why is there such an uproar over what is basically a parody of a great man? Take the same image and change MLK into Bill Clinton, and people would be laughing about this. Heck, would this even be a story if the image was of Abe Lincoln, George Washington, even Barack Obama? What about Gahandi, the Pope or Jessie Jackson? Personally, I believe this could be a picture of Jesus with strippers and it would cause less of a fuss. (and before you get offended by my comment, remember, Jesus hung out with prostitutes, so an image like that wouldn't be too far from the truth.)

MLK was a great man, but he was still just a man. To raise his image up to be greater than that of any other man seems pretentious and arrogant.

Have the women come forward about Martin Luther King? I've never seen one interview. Did Mrs. King confirm HER problem with MLK? Has his children voiced a problem with their father? We must be so very special. People attack us verbally and physically all the time and in America the verbal hate just never stops and it really has nothing to do with us. I think your social and political agendas have far exceeded your biblical, spiritual, and moral wisdom.

People need to wake up and understand that being human mean being just another stinking animal... and anything more is frosting on the cake.

It never ceasesto amaze me how white people think that their petty insults about other races aren't hurtful. You all are all ways talking about playing the race card, funny, since it's only played when you deal it out. I was so sure that if Obama became president that a lot of whites would show their true colors. I watched a so called drug sweep in my town not long ago and every single person they grabbed was black. I know for a fact that there are just as many white kids involved in drugs around here yet not a single one was targeted. Yes racism is still alive. You whites don't have the decency to respect our top leader I'm not surprised that you don't respect MLK. With alot of the white population it's always about race. When a bunch of criminals with badges can beat a man nearly to death on camera and you see nothing wrong with it somethings wrong. You lock a black man up for beating a dog but let a white man go free for beating a black man there's something naturally evil about white people. You are tripping over Muslims and yet useless hate groups like the kkk, skinheads neonazis and such you don't seem to concerned about. They are allowed to have their pathetic little marches and you say that's their right to have freedom of speech. You so called white americans stole and built this country using some of the most extremely brutal tactics in history. I supposed we shouldn't expect anything to change unless you all go back to europe were you ancestor's were all criminals and were sent here as punishment.

Sorry, but your rant doesn't hold water. The guy that made the flier is a BLACK GUY. And to even suggest that racism can only be practiced by White people is just asinine. You seriously need to read the hate filled, putrid crap you just typed, and yeah, you are extremely racist. Next time, at least try to bring up valid points of debate, not your hate filled rant against all white people. To say you watched a drug sweep in your town, and every single person "grabbed" was black, (was it because every single person that showed up was black-most likely) and then blame that on whitey is F***ing Hilarious dude. You are exactly what you claim to despise, a Racist.

kcjun, I'm a little confused. White people are intrinsically racist because some don't respect the president who happens to be black? Bush got even more flak, and he was white. Clinton got flak. Bush Sr got flak. Heck, Kennedy was shot. Maybe some of the disrespect is because of perceived shortcomings of him as a president?

The "offender" in this story was black, so I doubt that was "whitey's fault."

I'm confused as to how separatists wanting to leave Europe to escape persecution are "criminals" as you claim white people are.

Finally, you are the one using the term "cracker" numerous times, calling people "ignorant," calling people vulgar names, trumping up military service as proof that you are automatically better than others (sorry, military service is impressive but does not automatically earn you my respect), and yet somehow you claim to be the wronged one?

Oh yeah, and to actually bring my post back on topic, people need to grow up. This promotional stunt is stupid. It's sort of offensive. So's like 75% of the stuff on TV, the radio, the internet. Don't read the flier if you're offended, and get over it.

Kcjun, I get some of what you're saying but it's really not fair to paint all whites with such a broad stroke. I hate it when some whites post ghetto references to every black in an article so I can't let this one slide. People or cowards get on these blogs and say some outlandish things that they would never say in public. I say if you can't say anything constructive to drive a conversation than don't offend others. The fact of the matter is that Americans act so much more alike, when compared to people in other countries, than we fail to realize.

kcjun, and what makes you any different then the people which you lash out at. You forget it was also white people that died for your freedom, and white people that helped to get Obama elected. Maybe you should try using a little of what MLK spoke about. Not all of any color of people are good people. Btw the KKK and Aryan Nations have been marginalized for a long time. Like so many others you waste your time hating and blind yourself to the good things out there

Why didn't they go with a pic of bin Laden or mohammed in the promotion? Because they knew right away it would cause a firestorm. So, promotors, artists and publicists can think....if/when they want to. Hopefully, promoters will select some white personality to denegrate as they are the safe bet for avoiding controversy.

I understand Ronald, but this story was presented as if a "White" guy had made the flier and it was so racist. I don't think it is all that big of a deal, tacky? Maybe. Offensive? only if you're so uptight that a strip club flier got under your skin. I would not have been offended if it had been any white guy from history, in fact, say, Shakespeare, now that would have been funny. Clinton, very funny, George Bush jr., well that would be funny too. I am willing to bet though, that this guy will have new offers coming in faster than he can reply. Just don't make every thing racist, pointing fingers at white people, when white people didn't even do it.....

He really didn't think about the affect of the flier. He was just making something to get peoples attention to come out to the club.

MLK would have loved it, after all, he wasn't above stepping out on his wife, and in all probability would have showed up incogneto to try to cash in on the notoriety to get some trim on the side. The downfall of civilization as we know it will be Political Correctness. I piss on it as much as I can. I manage people at work, and I adhere to the proper decorum necessary in a work environment in order to do my job, but outside the workplace I am as politically incorrect as I can be, and I literally dare people to call me on it. The thing with Political Correctness is it is like a cancer it creeps up on you, seeps into your psyche and before you know it, it has changed you whether you want it to or not, and usually not for the better. It turns you into a puppet, dancing to someone elses tune and following their agenda. It works on your guilt and fear of what others might think. Luckily, my desire to be one of the "cool" people and the inclination to act like a Lemming are missing. So as my mother used to say, "things run off you back like water off a ducks" and I don't give a @!$%#. I still wear shorts that were in fashion in the early 80's despite the crap I get from everyone that they are too short. I don't care, I refuse to dress like some homeboy or prison inmate simply because its in "style". That is why I refuse to be politically incorrect. I abhor the fact that the Club thought it needed to apologize. Believe me, no patron of the club cared, and no one who took offense is ever going to patronize the club in the first place. The owner should have countered with a promo that said, "If MLK was alive, he would be here too!" One thing that everyone should realize, is that no matter how great the man's intellect, he still has a Johnson and the biological drive to use it. MLK, JFK, WJC, FDR, all were cheaters and all have people who thought they were great men. So get over the PC bull@!$%# and get on with living.

NOT a word of space would have been given. BUT being it is a black man that they used, well, lets all just scream and demand that an apology be given.

MLK is NOT a GOD and HE is NOT immune from ridicule, or from having his image used in any kind of advertising. They do it all the time with OTHER races in this country that have contributed MORE than he did.

Just like the Muslims and their so called holy book. It is freedom of expression to burn that dam*ed book, and it is freedom of expression to use what ever black man one wants to use.

Reading these comments. It looks like racism is alive and well. I am certain Dr. Martin Luther King would not approve of his name being pimped out for a strip club. I think he would be more upset reading the back and forth in the comments made.

Juan, if mlk wouldn't approve of being pimped, he would really be upset with his own family
