Firefighters cut through home's wall to rescue obese man

James Carbone

Firefighters in Center Moriches, N.Y., remove a man from second floor of a home Thursday.

Firefighters had to cut through an exterior wall to rescue a man who became stuck in the bathroom of his cluttered, second-story apartment on Long Island, NY, officials told local media.

The man was very "overweight," officials told MYFOXNY.com.

According to authorities quoted by Newsday, a rescue team used a series of ladders and a rope system Thursday to lower the man, identified as a 55-year-old former postal worker, to safety on a stretcher around 12:30 p.m. -- about three hours after someone called 911. His weight is unknown.

The man, who was not identified by police or firefighters, was taken to a local hospital for treatment, the paper said. Officials said the man fell in his bathroom and could not get back on his feet. He was listed in stable condition.

Stacks of boxes blocked firefighters from bringing rescue equipment up to the man's apartment, prompting them to cut a way out through the wall, Brookhaven Town spokesman Jack Krieger said in an email to Newsday. The narrowness of the space in some places added to their difficulty, authorities said.

"From what I'm told stuff was stacked to the ceiling in most of the rooms" on the second floor, Krieger told the paper.

The second floor of the wood-frame home was condemned by the town after the rescue, Krieger said. Officials deemed it unfit for human occupancy because of what he called hoarding. The home's owner declined to comment.

After the rescue, a massive pile of junk and collectibles -- including stacks of newspapers and figurines of dragons and “Star Wars” characters -- lay in the yard, Newsday said.

Another instance for TV show "Hoarders". The man was burried under styrofoam "Big Mac" and "Whopper" containers. Seriously though....someone must be feeding these people? In a word "STOP".

They could have easily opened up the bathroom door and taken him out. This is just wrong and stupid to cut a hole in the side of a second floor home to get a person out.

Did these people even go to school or were they drinking on the job and couldn't think straight.

Maybe they should have ended his postal pension plan so he couldn't eat so much and get this fat in the first place.

Right, cut a hole in the wall destroying the property when they could have easily moved boxes. The man apparently didn't have problems getting up and down the stairs to the kitchen before this.

With all the firefighters in the pic, they could have easily cleared the path for him to be taken pout.

Get effen real. They just took the easy way in doing things and made a spectacle out of it.

Firefighters clear a path rather than chop a big hole in the wall. You think they really would go to all the work to chop up a house if there was ANY other viable option.

Go watch the show horders they are online. I suspect the reporter was being nice when they said boxes blocked the way. I am sure it was trash piled to 1 foot from the ceiling. Then you can hope it was only boxes they have had shows where people had complete rooms full of dirty adult diapers.

I agree with Arieus. The article doesn't say his house was filled with rotten garbage and human filth. He had boxes, newspaper, collectibles, and "junk". And the term junk is subjective. One persons trash is another persons treasure. And that was what they dumped into the front yard which seems pretty crappy. Not everybody can afford a storage space especially if your paying $500+ a month for rent on a fixed income. The first thing I did when I got a place by myself was to take out everything I had in my storage space to save money and my place became quite a bit more cramped after that. It also seems like the city arbitrarily condemned the property just ot keep him from going home after he's ok. Most times you see this it's because somebody had 50+ animals living in it and it was filled with animal waste or it was being used for a meth lab.

News Announcement: Government is looking at how to efficiently extract fat from people and processing it into bio-diesel fuel. Spokesperson explains this accomplishes the goals of a less overweight society, recycling and not having to pollute in exploring and drilling for oil, not to mention the raw fuel is almost free and eliminates the high cost of disposing of bio-hazards.

Arieus, you should have quit while you were ahead.

Judging by your comment you cannot be an EMT or paramedic. I am. No one in EMS ever enters a scene unless it is determined to be safe. That is Rule # 1. I can well see that the scene may not have been safe or may not have been sufficiently cleared to assess in an acceptable time frame. Rule # 2 : Get to the patient as quickly as possible. It could have taken hours to safely clear a path big enough for a cot or a stair-chair. Rule # 3 : do a rapid assessment of airway, breathing and circulation. How do propose that should be done when the patient is inaccessible?

Go back to whatever it is you do and leave EMS to the professionals.

I'm beginning to think that these firefighters did this to make news headlines. With the amount of firefighters there, they could have just as easily moved stuff around inside the home to take the man out the front door. The man was able to get in and out of the home to do the shopping, up and down the stairs to the bedroom, the kitchen and bathroom. So for me, there was no real excuse in doing what they did here. I could see if it were an emergency for them to do this, but apparently it wasn't a life or death emergency. He fell on the floor and couldn't get back up.

If they cannot get a gurney inside the home, whet will they door next? Start tearing out the front door or carry the person out.

Hopefully these firemen will learn a lesson here to think before making such an idiotic decision such as this one.

That is the new Mantra of the USA - 'Don't judge' - this has gotten us to the point where the vast majority of us are fat, lazy, soft and weak. People lie, cheat, steal, and do not pay their own way. They feed their kids Mac and Cheese and chicken nuggets 5 times a week and the kids all get diabetes and asthma before they turn 15. People suck at the government teat and create no value. People have kids that they are not responsible enough to take care of. They can't even take care of themselves, like this guy, and the American taxpayer foots the bill. They get so fat and weak that they have to go on disability, and we all pay for that too.

BUT, GOD FORBID that we 'judge' someone!

Are we even living on the same planet?

Ruken--"medical science" has proven pretty much zip about how people get "obese." Using a phrase like "lifestyle choices" is one way that "medical science" tries to obscure this point.

Here's one "lifestyle choice" that will get a person obese--"get born." Here's another: "keep breathing." Dead people don't get obese.

Such comments make me deeply annoyed because I once went to my doctor and told him that the medication he had put me on was causing me to gain weight--he quite literally rolled his eyes, told me that they put people who are compulsive eaters on the same medication, and they lose weight. I was told it was my "activity level and diet." Well, yes, I suppose if I'd been running marathons and eating a handful of rice every other day, I'd have lost weight. The point was that nothing about my activity level or diet had changed, but I'd gained 25 pounds in about 2 months.

That same medication now has a black box warning--guess what for! Weight gain. The medication causes uncontrolled weight gain in some patients, and patients who experience weight gain are to be immediately taken off that medication and put on a different medication. Many medications cause weight gain (a little something doctors don't like to mention--especially when they prescribe them). I've been on three--no, I was never warned about the side effect, and another side effect is that the weight gained is virtually impossible to lose because of changes in one's metabolism.

Other factors that lead to weight gain at present that have nothing to do with "character": plastics in which foods are sealed, steroids in animals, corn that is fed to animals, the lack of Omega-3s in food produced currently, additives to inexpensive foods, jobs which require one to use a computer, jobs which require one to use a computer for stretches of 8 hours at a time.

Seriously--people today are no more lazy or gluttonous or of poorer character than they were in the past. Some are lazy, some are gluttonous, and some have a poor character--it's pretty much the same rate as it always has been. Yet, people are much heavier. It doesn't take "medical science" to prove that there is something in the environment--yes, a "lifestyle choice" of choosing to live in the US in the 21st century--that is contributing to that weight gain.

Oh, and you might want to go read some recent literature from "medical science"--they are slowly figuring out that weight gain is caused by things other than "character," and you might want to stay caught up. Just in passing, my dear, they have also come to realize that disease isn't a result of "humorism"--despite all the "medical science" to the contrary for more than 2,000 years. Have a great day.

Most wall street types AREN'T fat.

Not that this is all that relevant to the actual story, but there is something to be said about income level and food quality.

        1. If you are driven enough to make your money the hard way, you are probably also driven enough to stay physically active. That's not to say poor people can't be driven and/or healthy, and just less successful financially - that's a different topic.

        2. Good quality healthy food is expensive. Manufactured and processed junk food (redundant) is cheap. Sitting down with a nutritionist to learn the difference - and it isn't always obvious - might not be an affordable option for low-income families. It's certainly not a focus of our national culture.

I remember reading stuff by an economist who concluded that for many people they are better off financially by NOT getting thin--higher paying jobs tend to be sedentary, involve business-related socializing and long hours. As for this guy--I've known a few hoarders and met many years ago while working as a life insurance rep. Some houses reeked, others did not. Some were filthy but not all (although it is hard to avoid layers of dust even if there is no rotting garbage or animals). I assume the decision to cut into the house was based on the medical concerns and time involved to keep trying alternatives. As for character, bariatric science does not look at obesity as a moral failing, and hoarding is more of an issue of brain chemistry (related to ocd but not the same) than emotions.

Walking around the block for 20 minutes a day will have zero effect on one's weight, Ruken--look it up. A woman who is middle aged has to do an hour of hard aerobic exercise EVERY DAY to avoid gaining weight--it is more than that to lose it. A person who is already overweight would have to do both weight training and aerobic exercise for far more than 20 minutes a day in order to affect his/her metabolism in order to lose weight.

Yes, there are still dimwits who think that 20 minutes of moderate exercise will cause weight loss. Those people are suckers for TV advertisements for gadgets which will produce weight loss with "just 20 minutes of exercise a day--and you don't even have to sweat!"

Seriously--go look up some actual medical research. Weight loss of any substantial amount that is sustainable involves a dramatic alteration in a person's diet, a good deal of money, and a heck of a lot more than walking around the block (which I would triple-dog-dare you to do in my neighborhood, as you would get run over). It is deeply annoying that people still believe that "just walk around the block for 20 minutes a day and stop stuffing yourself with triple Whoppers!"

It's an hour or more of heavy exercise each and every day--and no more than 100 extra calories a day (1/3 of a single bagel) will result in an extra 10 pounds in a year. That's 100 pounds in 10 years--pretty freaking easy to do, and no triple Whoppers required. Have a great day.

I hate how people believe it's only about eating. Yes that is a HUGE part but it's also mental too. Ask anyone of them that are severely obese and there is something that happened to them that the only way that they can handle it is to eat. That is their coping mechanism. It's an illness just as anorexia or bulima is. You wouldn't tell one of them to just eat or sandwich or stop making yourself sick. There is more involvement to it. I feel sorry for this man who has been hoarding and severely obese. I hope this is a wake up call and he gets some help with his problems.

No it is NOT an illness. It is being weak willed and weak minded. I don't know much about anorexia and bulimia but they are pretty rare from what I understand. More than half of the US population is overweight and a huge percentage of those people are obese. So in your mind, every person who is more than 100 pounds overweight has a mental illness?

Andd please explain to me how someone who is 600 pounds got that way, if not by eating. My mind did not eat 10 cheeseburgers, my MOUTH did.

'I don't know much about anorexia and bulimia but they are pretty rare from what I understand.' You seriously need to do some research before you make a statement like that. Anorexia and bulimia(FYI: not rare) and obesity ARE eating disorders and all three are tied to mental illness. After reading your comments, I am of the mind that you would enjoy killing puppies and kicking kittens. But, that's probably not considered a mental illness in your book, either.

No it is NOT an illness.

Obesity is a symptom that often points to mental and/or physical illness. It is also commonly a cause of mental and physical illness.

It can also result from family or regional cultural norms.

To say that obese people are just weak willed does not solve anything because there are a variety of factors that contribute to it, and because it encourages obesity by implying that such people cannot help themselves.

We need a national focus on healthy eating from the cradle to the grave. Kids raised on fattening foods are decidedly more likely to be obese adults and pass that tradition on to their own kids. The healthcare costs involved in treating obesity-related illnesses get passed on to other Americans in the form of higher insurance premiums and doctor's bills.

In short, it's a national problem.

I think my statement was pretty clear, but on the other hand i bring it up because i'm not especially fond of people attacking others for the sake of judging and demoralizing them so i say things that i think might make them consider things differently. Sorry again for offending you Leroy.

This guy is not my 'brother' - and I am not religious at all. I am just so fed up with people making excuses for crappy behavior that should not be socially acceptable. What would happen if one of these 600 pounders walked down a street (assuming they can walk at all) in the 1950s? People would look at them like they were an alien. If it wasn't OK in the 1950s why should it be OK now? Thyroid conditions existed in the 1950s too, how come all these people weren't that fat then?

Because it was not OK to behave like that back then! You didn't take more than your fair share, and if you did, people would call you out on it. People didn't drink 64 ounces of soda, they drank sodas in an 8 ounce bottle. They didn't order 4 cheeseburgers, they ordered one. They actually got off their tails and walked sometimes.

Alaska Girl - this has nothing to do with being superficial. I would not judge someone with a big nose or by the color of their skin or because they have a big mole in their face, because that is not in their control. But I WILL judge someone who eats 30,000 calories per day. There is no medical condition in the world that forces you to do that.

The obese cause a lot of problems - they make Americans look ridiculous and lazy. There are people starving around the world, and not only do the obese not care, but they eat enough calories to feed 6 or 7 normal sized people. They drive up health care and insurance costs, they drive up infrastructure costs, and they expect to get 2 seats on the plane for the price of one. Whenever anyone tries to call them out, they are called a bigot.

Like I said in my earlier post, as a society we need to be able to make value judgments without being attacked by the PC police. A guy with 3 kids by 3 different women and does not take care of his kids - he is a WORSE person than the guy who is married to the mother of his kids and is active in their lives. I know that is not politically correct, but there it is. The guy who drives a huge SUV and constantly ruins the environment is WORSE than the guy who cares about the environment and tries to have a positive impact on it.

I really don't care about what psychological problems these people have. If someone came into your house and robbed you and beat you up, and peed on your rug - would you say "Oh, well, maybe he had a difficult childhood" - NO! You would be pissed at the guy and want to press charges against him!

So show me the rule that says I have to coddle people. Show me the rule that says when a kid plays video games all night andd fails his test the next day, I have to say "Good Job Johnny!"

The economy is tanking and we cannot afford this wishy washy attitude anymore. All of our success and plenty from the last couple of decades have made us soft and weak. We need to get tough again. And getting tough means calling out our friends, family, and neighbors when we see them doing something that is detrimental to the rest of us. I decided on New Year's Eve of this year that I would no longer accept mediocrity or excuses, and that I would call out BS every time I saw it. So here I go again, shouting from the wilderness.

Alaska Girl, I call BS on you!!!! Your smug moral judgments are not helping anyone, and in fact, the morally superior attitude that you obviously have - well, that kind of attitude has gotten us to where we are now. It is NOT OK to be lazy, it is not OK to not take responsibility for your actions. And most importantly, IT IS NOT OK to call out the people on here who are saying that obesity is a serious problem and that this guy should be ashamed of himself for allowing himself to get like that. Because he SHOULD be ashamed!!!

                    Devon,

I agree to an extent. Obesity is a problem. It is not a good way to live. We should be taking steps as a nation to bring down the obesity rate by changing the way we think about food, but...

Is public shaming more likely to get him to fix his problem or cause him to hole up, hide away, and eat more?

If you're more concerned about your moral high ground, all well and good for you. If you want to be part of an actual solution, maybe it's time for a rethink.

Actually, there is a psychological disorder that causes people to get up and eat in the middle of the night without waking. They often have no idea they are doing it. It's extremely rare, but very real. That sounds to me like a medical condition that forces you to overeat. Unless you don't consider psychological disorders "medical conditions." But it is nonetheless reflexive and involuntary consumption of calories.

A link, to prove I'm not making stuff up:

His mental disorder is reflected in his obesity and hoarding. Hopefully this will be his "bottom" and he will get the help he needs. It's a very sad time yet hopefully a positive turning point in his life. I send him only positive thoughts and wish him well. If he's reading this I ask you to please take the help offered or get help, it's a chance for a new begining and you won't have to do it alone. Today can be the first day of the rest of your life. A chance to start over. I know from experience.

BMI is just a calculation of height vs. weight. It doesn't take into consideration what that weight is made of. While it might give an ideal range for many people, body fat percentage would be a better guide if they're going to use size to determine insurance premiums.

Yes. People that work out a lot can register as "overweight" on a BMI scale, but only have 12% body fat.

This is what we have come to. It is a taboo in this country to make 'value judgments' - but value judgments are the only way that we can regulate our behavior. When there is no stigma for anything you do and nothing is your fault, why bother to even try at all?

If I killed puppies and kittens every day but I did it because I was abused as a child, does that make it OK? The severely obese negatively affect their societies in a variety of ways. They drive up health care costs, they cost us all more for infrastructure - i.e. we have to start building everything bigger and stronger to accomodate these people. They also negatively affect our morality. Every time they walk around looking like that, more people see them and they think it is OK if they look like that too. Do you want your kids to think that it is OK and 'not their fault' if they weight 450 pounds? Would that be OK with you for your kids to die at 45 years old, before THEIR kids even go to college?

And for everyone talking about 'thyroid conditions' - seriously, spare me! That condition is extremely rare, and if it is managed correctly someone with that condition will be no more than 50 to 100 pounds overweight. These morbidly obese people eat 4 loaves of bread per day, 2 dozen eggs per day, 4 packs of American cheese, etc. No Thyroid condition forces you to eat that much. And God forbid that you walk 30 minutes per day!

So when you want someone to blame for why our society is getting so fat, look in the mirror. As long as you keep telling people that whatever they do is OK and not their fault, they will continue to do stupid things. Some people ARE better than others. There are right and wrong answers, not everything is opinions. If you let yourself get morbidly obese, I'm sorry, but you are a crappy person who has failed at life. And you should know that and not be excused for it.

Thyroid disorder affects more than 25 million people, I'd hardly call that an "extremely rare condition", and many people are unaware of the fact they have it because they don't do their annual physical. Also, they either don't have symptoms or their symptoms can be dismissed as being something else.

Over a third of Americans are obese, and over half are overweight. That's far more than 25 million.

I'm wagering not everyone with a thyroid disorder is as well.

6% of Americans have Thyroid condition.

YES!! Caregiver I applaud you, you are on the front lines of this!! The problem is that people will not change their attitudes unless we call them out one by one and show them why their views are flawed. Trust me, I would rather not take on this role, and for years I kept my mouth shut about these issues (obesity is only one symptom of the "value judgments taboo" problem) because every time I told it like it is, I would get called all sorts of bad things, 'heartless and uncaring' were big ones.

But here is the thing - who is more heartless, me or that poor kids mother, who enabled his bad behavior and lack of self control? If that kid was mine we would be out ever single day, rain, snow or shine, walking for an hour or more. We wouldn't be eating celery, but we would be eating sensible meals with sensible portions. And if I caught my kid sneaking pizza and ice cream, I would call him out on it!

To me, that is real love. Love is not enabling, it is teaching the people you love to be self actualized human beings who can survive and thrive on their own.

Devon, unless you can honestly say that you know what it is like to be 450 lbs, I think your judgments are superficial and uninformed. Not everyone who is considered obese eats 30,000 calories/day. I think you are focused on a very small group of people who have this type of lifestyle.

Yes, some people eat too much. Yes, some people don't get enough exercise. But there are plenty of thin people who fall into this category as well.

The biggest contributor to obesity in this country is misinformation. The FDA spent decades telling us to eat 5-11 servings/day of bread and pasta (to the benefit of American agriculture). The food pyramid wasn't even backed by science...it was created by a congressional committee. The answer isn't as simple as eat less, exercise more. The science is much more complicated than that.

If losing weight were so simple (calories in/calories out), everyone would do it, right?

I've been surprised that no one has mentioned prescription drugs as a possible cause for our obesity epidemic. Many drugs, such as those for seizures, migraines, high blood pressure, abnormal heart rhythms, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, heart burn, schizophrenia, depression, hormone replacement therapy, oral contraceptives, among many, many others, can cause weight gain. Sometimes, a very large weight gain. It's not just Twinkies!

agreed again Devon!! The ONLY reason I have a thyroid condition is because some incompetent physician removed half of it when I was a teen- a simple benign goiter- known in teenagers. However, the medication is cheap and no side effects. So I agree. It's a simple fix. People are using this as an excuse for obesity and everything else!

Hmm. If he was so big and round, why couldn't he just run right through the wall like "Kool Aide"???

Heh, he couldn't even get on his feet according to the article, so running is out of the question.

I hope this man gets the help he needs, both to control his weight and his hoarding issues.

The 'help' he needs is for society to stop enabling him and telling him he has some kind of mental disease. Someone needs to be honest with him and say "You are way too fat because you eat too much and you never leave your house."

I will not participate in coddling this guy or anyone who is like him. If you coddle people like this, you will be complicit in their continuing poor health, and maybe even their early deaths.

And judging by your picture, 'hot in Miami", you have a body type where it is easy to maintain your weight. I, on the other hand, am genetically predisposed to be overweight, most of my family carries extra weight (and I mean 30-50 extra pounds, not 400)

And so I know firsthand, that it is possible to control your weight even with a genetic predisposition to carry extra weight. I am currently about 20 pounds overweight and I have managed to maintain that level for most of my adult life. I walk every single day and lift hand weights at home. I park far away from stores so I can walk more and I take the stairs when I can. I'm not a Vegan but I try to eat pretty well.

So if I can do it, how come these other people can't? And I can judge them all I want because I am one of them. I know how hard it is to watch what you eat every single day and to exercise day after day, year after year, and I know that they could do it too if they just lifted their little finger.

But then people like you come around and say, "Oh, you need help you poor thing, it's not your fault!"

And that is why they fail.

Gosh, Devon, I wish we could all be like you! Genetically predisposed? So, that is your excuse? Get off your high moral horse. If you have children, they probably secretly hate you. I know I would. It must be like the Third Reich in your home with your attitude. (Sarcasm should be quite obvious here).

That is my question - can we prosecute the people who feed the morbidly obese? If you can't leave your bed, how is it possible that you can still eat that much unless someone is spending considerable time and money feeding you? Those people should seriously be put in jail.

This is an example of your tax dollars at work. He's probably on Medicare, Medicaid, food stamps and other forms of welfare and entitlements. We allow him to "enjoy" this despicable life style because he's "disabled" and can not work. He has absolutely no responsibilities, allowed to do as he pleases and collect taxpayer checks via the government. God Bless America. What great country.
