This glaring misspelling has some criticizing the "dumbing down" of American society.
NEW YORK -- A glaring misspelling on a street sign outside a Manhattan high school has some laughing that the mistake’s gone unreported for months and stauncher critics condemning what they perceive to be a symbol of the “dumbing down" of American society.
The painted pavement on Stanton Street outside Marta Valle High School reads "SHCOOL X-NG."
The Department of Transportation claims the mistake was made by a utility provider, not the city, according to The New York Post. The agency said it would reach out to the contractor to have the error fixed.
But that hasn't quelled the outcry.
“It’s sad,” Derek Pacheco, a securities worker who passes by the sign on his way to the office each day, told the Post. “It speaks volumes about the dumbing down of American culture.”

A city worker who asked not to be identified told the Post regardless of who made the mistake, a student or administrator at the school should have noticed and reported it some time ago.
Another worker in the area laughed when the Post asked him what he thought of the pavement sign.
"It's embarrassing for the city," said Luis Maldonado. "Teaching kids to read and write correctly is very important."
Area residents said construction crews labored on the street over the summer.

Yes, Heather, you are guessing. That's obvious.
Nowe cihld lefft beehinde!!!!
I'm not really sure i understand why it's such a big deal. you have to realize that the letters are painted individually with stencils that often get mixed up. street crews have to work quickly or drivers (like you) will get all pissed off because they are taking too long, and mistakes will be made. these types of "signs" are only meant to be seen at an angle from several feet away, and it is difficult for a person kneeling down painting them to realize they have made a mistake until its to late. I mean its obvious to everyone what its supposed to say, and fixing it will take time and money that people like you don't want to pay for to begin with, so stop freaking complaining and CTFO.
I recently saw a photo from Western Carolina University's "Universtiy Bookstore".
If this bothers you, do not Google "shcool". It could push you over the edge.
this isn't nearly as funny as the mistakes made on sites like this by journalists everyday who are paid to write.
How about this one from Western Carolina's "Universtiy Bookstore"?
All I can say is...Bwaaahaaahaaa!
Don't you just love the public shcool system these days? /s
Sadly, for a lot of people correct spelling is more of a suggestion than an actual rule.
You'd think that it would have been noticed sooner.
And yet we keep pilfering the coffers of our education system.
WE GET WHAT WE PAY FOR!!!!!!!!!
We pay far more per student than other countries who have student performance levels far above our students, so it's not about money.
I'm more concerned about the person who was suppose to be inspecting the contractor's work for the city.
I'm more concerned about all the teachers who walked by it for months. Either they didn't notice, or they didn't care enough to bring it to someone's attention.
"Hello, Pot? This is the Kettle. Yeah, you're black."
ohs mys godz. why weez be hatin on each oder like dat
What really will destroy the English language will be the messaging we do via Cell phones. U R 2!
Haha you can see it on Google Maps too...
Also, at this crossing it's "X-NG", but around the corner it's "X-ING". *sigh*
A few years ago, the city of Edmonds, Washington put up a yield sign that was spelled Y-E-I-L-D. When I called to report the misspelling, the person I spoke with asked me how it was supposed to be spelled. I think this was more shocking than the misspelled sign.
As long as the teacher's unions are getting all their benefits and tenure and the kid in class with the 50 IQ can be catered to with "special courses", attention, extra advisors and hot breakfast and lunch daily through the year, who cares about spelling. Does the child feel good about who he(she) is? That's what's important in Dumbocratic America!
Whattaya complaining about...it's producing more working class Republican voters. Too dumb to realize when their chosen political party is buggering them.
Interesting. If this were outside a school in the South, there would already be 20 pages of hateful comments about the Southern states and politics.
But since it happend above the Mason-Dixon, nothing but excuses.
Hypocrites.
This must have been where Megamind went to shool as he liked to say.
No idiots, it's spelled skool. jeez. :)
15 years ago teachers and administrators told my wife and I that spelling was not important in early elementary school, being creative was. Well fortunately we did not buy that line of garbage, but this is what results from this kind of backward thinking.

The kids probably thought it was funny. Is this really the best example of a flawed education system? Typos are common and represent haste more than literacy. On something large enough that you have to step back to read it, the contractor probably didn't notice till he was finished, and decided it wasn't worth the effort to fix. Pick up a Texas science book and I'll show you a flawed education system.
The government blames it on a utility provider. Well excuse me doesn't the government specify what the signs say and isn't the government supposed to supervise and inspect the work. Our government at work for you.
