Cops: Man hacked victim with ax, ate brain

A Florida man has been arrested on charges that he hacked to death a Connecticut man and ate the victim's eye and part of his brain.

Police in Lynn Haven, Fla., said Wednesday that 35-year-old Tyree Lincoln Smith was arrested Tuesday night on a Connecticut warrant for murder.

According to police in Bridgeport, Conn., Smith was covered in blood when he told a relative on Dec. 16 that he had killed a man with a hatchet and eaten pieces of his brain and his eye.

The relative contacted authorities after the body of Angel "Tun Tun" Gonzalez, 43, was discovered Jan. 20 at his Bridgeport, Conn., apartment. Police say Smith left Connecticut that day on a Florida-bound bus.

Lynn Haven police say federal, state and local law enforcement officers took Smith into custody at a residence without incident.

According to ctpost.com, an affidavit in the case says Gonzales had seen Smith sleeping outside on a porch and invited him to come in from the cold and share the apartment he was living in.

Once in the apartment, the affidavit states, Smith began beating Gonzalez about the head and face with the ax, ctpost.com reported.

He later told his relative the blows to Gonzalez's head were so severe he was able to remove an eye from the victim's head along with a piece of the victim's brain, which he then carried in a plastic bag to a nearby cemetery where he ate the parts at his brother's grave site, ctpost.com reported..

Odalys Vaszuez told ctpost.com that she wants justice for her stepfather's slaying.

"Here it is that my dad was trying to help this guy, telling him to come inside from the cold," she told the website. "If my father was helping him stay warm, what kind of person is it who does this, who repays him by swinging an axe at him and hitting him so hard it blows his brains out?"

Police said the woman Smith was staying with in Florida was unaware of the allegations and is cooperating with investigators, according to NBCConnecticut.com.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Now that’s just taking “Come on in and eat a little something” WAY too far.

No, seriously…there has to be more to this sordid story than what is being told in the article. Most likely, the victim (otherwise known as “tonight's entrée”) tried to come on to the psyco in some sexual manner and it just turned the dude into a freakin' zombie. It’s no excuse for cannibalism, but some guys just can’t handle the gay stuff. So you have to be REAL careful who you hit on, or you just might get your butt eaten...literally.

Still....you can’t go turning somebody into dinner just because they want a little ass. That's not what "let's go grab a bite" is supposed to mean.

This is one of them. Mental instability.

OMG -- and to think that this man was walking around the streets! I cook for the local homeless vets center, and I can tell you that most of these men are in desperate need of psychological help and should NOT be roaming around the streets. Most of them look like they're going to explode at any minute! I don't know if this guy is a verteran or not, but that crazy look he has on his face is what I see every time I take food to the shelter!

Years ago budget cuts forced them from treatment centers. Now when forced to deal with them local authorities are blamed. That's a joke. If they shouldn't be roaming the streets, then they are dangerious. Yet so many seem to think they are harmless. Guess this proves otherwise.

A hobo returned late one evening after sundown to rejoin his partner and compare the days events. First hobo said; "I found a set of keys, 3 bucks worth of aluminum cans, and half a happy meal. How'd you do?" Second hobo replies, "I run across a little gal down the tracks here aways; and well, I've been having sex pretty much all day long." First hobo says, "Holy cow man! Did she let you kiss her and everything?" Second hobo says; "Nope, I never did find her head."

well the homeless guy knew that if he killed someone he would get life in-prison, so he did what he did to get free housing and free food and an occasional lover all for free.

homeless people knows this, i dont think florida has the death penalty and if it does they guy will live to be 60 before they even kill him. they should just kill him, dont evaluate him or try to rehabilitate him, just takle him out back and POW!

Ill be glad to shoot him myself.

It says the victim lived in an apartment, but it took a month before anyone investigated? I would think the smell would be overwhelming after a few days.... And it said the alleged killer's relative contacted authorities Dec 16th, after seeing him covered in blood; yet he was just arrested?

Crazy Dahmer like criminals is one of the reasons why middle class people will not allow a homeless person to sleep in their homes. Its bad enough that decent hard working people have lost their homes due to unemployment and high rents, and then some meth crazed freak comes along and makes other homeless folks look bad. I only hope middle class Americans won't judge poor Americans on account of a few bad apples.

scottestinson1 - why would anyone of any class allow a total stranger to sleep in his or her home? Why would you assume that anyone is obligated to allow a stranger to sleep in his or her home? Do you take strangers into your home? No? Then why should anyone else do something that you won't do?

UMGator, my point was not so much whether Americans should invite strangers into their homes or not. Rather, that a needy person has absolutely no business butchering somebody who is trying to help him. I want my country to have a moral standard where people can be generous and expect to be thanked for their good deeds. I don't want my country to become like Somalia where aid workers and doctors need armed guards. Or worse yet, have the Government raise taxes so that we can give people welfare checks. I would like America to be a country where old fashioned charity is still respected.

Uh, you really aren't supposed to eat the brain, even if cannabalism is your thing. Ever heard of Mad Cow Disease? Same thing happens if you eat the brain of an infected human.

Although, this guy sounds like he's got way more problems than MCD.

Most likely it wasn't urban dweller hunting season and this guy didn't have a permit/tag. Pretty serious offense to hunt out of season.

I'm just glad the hunter didn't use a gun or all the anti-gun folks would come out of the woodwork. Actually, this hunter is probably on the cutting edge in showing us the future of hunting. If the anti-gun folks had their way, we'd all have to hunt with hatchets and the like.

Not that I'm anti-hatchet (or other blades in general), don't want to start such an argument and get the NHA people riled up, but those things are really dangerous.

Good thing for the hunter that the urban dweller didn't have a gun.

Mentally unstable people should have a good benefited job so they can get insurance so they can get drugs and therapy to stop them from being mentally unstable. Or so that's what Republicans tell us.

And what's wrong with expecting able-bodied people to work to earn a living and insurance benefits? Oh, that right. You live off government checks that are funded by taxpayers who actually work for a living, so you figure that is the way everyone should live. If no one worked, who do you think is going to pay taxes so that you can buy groceries?

OK, A. This guy was probably not mentally stable enough to hold down a job, and B. please do a little research on "the working poor." Not everyone on welfare is unemployed. Many of them in fact do have one or more jobs, but the pay is not enough to make even basic ends meet, and jobs like that rarely come with benefits.

                          to expand on flbikerchick's point...
even if a person is mentally ill, and the drugs can somehow make them functional so that they can get and keep a job, unless you're forcefeeding the drugs to them, often times once the drugs kick in and the mentally ill person feels better, they think they're 'cured' and quit taking them...because drugs 'fix' things, right?

No easy answer to this problem, and no, locking them up isn't necessarily an answer either...there are a lot of variables here...unless this guy started out eating neighborhood pets, or expressed a desire to eat somebody else's brains, there's really no way to know he was going to do this...there are a lot of schizophrenics and other mentally unstable individuals who don't pose a danger to anybody but themselves

I am not saying that you should not help someone out but it would probably be safer and saner to give to the local homeless shelter.

Sounds like PCP. This isn't an entirely uncommon occurrence (dismembering and cannibalism) for those who have a very bad reaction to PCP.

                                    #18.1 - Wed Jan 25, 2012 7:07 PM EST

As a psych RN I didn't know that Alan, but it sounds logical.

As I was reading the article I was thinking that the assailant would almost have to have been psychotic- but it certainly could have been drug induced psychosis. That would explain why by the time authorities started looking for the guy he knew enough to leave town, versus at the time that he committed the crime he was so out of it that he had a conversation with someone else, still covered with blood and didn't try to cover his tracks(openly told the other person what he had done.)

Do you know of any cases firsthand, where PCP has predisposed someone to cannibalism? I know of another similar case to this one (another nurse I know only casually claims to have been present) In that case, according to my coworker, at The Federal Medical Center in Springfield, MO several years ago, an inmate killed another and partially devoured one of the victim's vital organs.IF my coworker's story is accurate, the assailant and the victim in his story had both been locked up a long time in a maximum security facility, where it would have been hard for someone to sneak any contraband in to an inmate, although anything is possible.Of course because somebody allegedly engaged in canabalism once and hadn't been gooned on PCP, doesn't mean that PCP doesn't increase the likelihood of cannibalism.

Hmmm...It's gruesome and even hard to read and I almost didn't bother to read the article, but you may have some information that health care professionals need.
