At least 11 hurt in collapse at casino construction site

Al Behrman / AP

Workers and officials inspect the collapse at the Horseshoe Casino under construction on Friday, Jan. 27, 2012, in Cincinnati. Authorities say at least 11 people have been taken to hospitals with minor injuries, non life-threatening.

A partial collapse at a casino construction site early Friday in Cincinnati injured at least 11 people, according to news reports.

Ten of the injured were taken to University Hospital, none with life-threatening injuries, a hospital spokeswoman told NBC News. Most of the victims, between the ages of 30 and 40, were expected to be discharged later Friday.

Authorities reported differing numbers of injured, with fire officials saying 13 people were hospitalized and police saying at least 11 were.

Workers were pouring concrete on the structure's second floor when a metal beam in the middle of the section fell, making the second floor buckle, authorities said. No one was caught beneath the collapsed material, Fire Chief Dick Braun told The Cincinnati Enquirer.

Muddy conditions forced firefighters to craft a makeshift bridge to move the injured workers.

Rock Gaming is developing the casino in partnership with Caesar's Entertainment.

A partial collapse of a garage at another Ohio casino under construction -- and also being developed by the Rock Gaming-Caesar's partnership -- occurred last month. No one was injured in that incident, according to The Associated Press.

The Associated Press and NBC News services contributed to this report.

Poor construction products, poor engineering, poor workmanship, or any combination of the three.

Hope they all get home safe.

They're lucky. Shortcuts in construction can be deadly.

I was thinking the same thing...wounded...hmmm? the local yocals don't have an accurate account of the number of 'wounded' either.

        wound [ woond ]

        1. injury to body: an injury in which the skin, tissue, or an organ is broken by some external force such as a blow or surgical incision, with damage to the underlying tissue

Something tells me that an investigation of this construction company is in order. One collapse is an accident, two shows definite signs of deliberate shortcuts and possible criminal fraud in the construction. I am not sure I would want to go to either of these casinos. It is not unheard of for buildings to collapse after they have been completed due to either design problems, faulty material/workmanship during construction, or outright fraud on the part of the builder. I would not want to be in the building when it decided to collapse. I know there are building inspectors that are supposed to prevent this, but there are too many construction sites and not enough inspectors. In addition, there have been far too many cases of building inspectors being paid to look the other way while a construction company cut corners by using substandard materials or took shortcuts in construction.

As for the comment regarding using the word wounded, you can be wounded by a lot more things than just a bullet. Next time I suggest pulling out a dictionary before questioning someone's choice of wording.

Actually, the construction companies are different. The news agencies addressed that on the news casts of the accident this AM. I am not sure who was the company in the other collapse, but Messer Construction was the lead company here in Cincinnati.

The same construction group involved in another similar accident earlier this month, that speaks for unsafe working conditions as a repeat of the same set of circumstances and taking NO action to reduce the risk of repeating the incident. I hope OSHA issues significant fines this time as a deterrent to them to insure it does not happen a THIRD time

Actually it could very well be poor quality steel imported from China.

But that's what happens when you go with the lowest bidder. Just think that through the next time you go over a bridge, or through a tunnel, that was built by the lowest bidder.

That is why their are inspectors and structural engineers. Assuming of course that they have a conscience.

There is a reputable steel manufacturer miles north of there this casino is being built. The steel is not coming from there. I suspect Janitor is right and that its Chinese steel. Ironically, this is the Horseshoe Casino, their sister casino in Cleveland had a collapse in their parking garage under construction in December 2011.

Two collapses in two months by the same Biuilder and same parent organization, union work and mandatory contractors. Do you see something wrong? Do we need an open bid process, good standards, reliable builders, and non-political suppliers?

Good morning Janitor; folks seem to forget that "made in China" products that are imported by American Companies are produced to the specifications of that Company and said Company has the OBLIGATION to determine any product, whether imported or not meets the specs.

                      Old Dude...

Sorry, but the American Company puts out a bid to X companies for Y quantities of Z materials meeting such and such specifications..... they get the lowest bid and run. They don't do independent testing. They take the word of the manufacturer, or they might do occassional spot testing.

But you're also assuming the construction companies involved are AMERICAN. Many working here aren't American companies. There are Korean, Turkish, Japanese, Chinese, English and any other country you can think of. And they really don't care much either.... they're concerned with the bottom line.

Actually not necessarily, it assumes that the welds were the cause. They are only one of many possibilities.

Based on the photos, I would say that the contractor did not provide an adequate support structure under the deck prior to placing the crete. concrete strength is far different when it is wet vs cured.

Normally it refers to injury in a battle of fight but technically you can be wounded in an accident.

In battle you are usually wounded, because you have been hit by a bullet or shrapnel that rips through your tissue. If you fall down you get injured because landing on your arm hurts. A single injured soldier might be taken to hospitol where his wounds will be treated, for he may have been wounded a number of times.

Hence you hear them say one injured person was transported to a hospital, where they are being treated for multiple gunshot wounds.
