Subscribe to RSSSANTA MARIA, Calif. – A Santa Maria police officer was shot and killed Saturday by a fellow officer who was trying to arrest him for suspected sexual misconduct with a minor, the Santa Maria Times reported.
The slain officer was on duty when police tried to take him into custody early Saturday, the Santa Maria Police Department said in a press release.
The suspect officer allegedly drew his weapon and fired. "In response, one officer on scene fired at the suspect officer hitting him once," officials said in a news release, according to the Times.
The wounded officer was taken to a hospital, where he died.
The name of the slain officer was not released. Authorities said he was being investigated on an allegation of sexual misconduct against a minor.

Sexual conduct with a minor is anyone have sex with someone under 18, when you're 18 and older. Police officers usually are 21 when they start and sometimes some people lie about their age. So you would really have to be careful with this kind of situation. I once had a guy washing my patrol car, 18 years of age, (in jail for having sex with his 17 year old girl friend). The parents first reaction was to call the police, who then arrested the young man. They later decided, before it went to court, that they did not want charges pursued. The girl was pregnant and they got married. However, the county would not drop the charges, the young man was found guilty and went to jail. On the flip side I encountered a young 14 year old girl, who had run away so much, her parents filed papers to emancipate her from them. She was living with a guy 25 years of age, pregnant by him and the same county attorney would not file charges on him. Sexual conduct with a child 14 and under is charged as a serious felony as it is considered child molestation. Go figure?

Nope, it was part of their jail sentence, to perform such duties. Wasn't a bad person and he was in a county jail serving county time, so he was charged with some sort of misdemeanor. It was a long time ago.
Killing a fellow officer or a civilian is an abuse of power justified by the state in it's lax policies and forgiveness to assailants. I remember there was a thing not too long ago called a "warning shot" and instead of a killing shot, a "crippling wound".
To those that justify all this behavior, to me, illustrates the hostility inherent in society.

You are missing a point. Whether the officer is on or off duty, he WILL be armed. If he pulled the piece in on duty, he would have done the same in a non-public setting IMHO.

If the suspect shot his gun it was in self defense. he was being hunted down and killed. The police had the control, and this is the out come they wanted.

police do not bring weapons in to the station. I've seen them put weapons in lockers before going in. there are no weapons allowed in the court house. these are places the police are not armed.
It all depends where you're from. Some areas police are armed at all times on an off duty and in the more Marxist, liberal, socialist jurisdictions they are disarmed before they go off duty. You must live in one of those places if your officers are not armed at the station house.
Obviously, the decedent cop was well known by his fellow cops and from the events that took place was not the kind of PERSON who was going to cooperate with the law or law defenders. This was a rogue, renegade cop who allegedly fired on his fellow officer(s) first and likely without provocation.
Will opinions be different when we know the ethnicity of the decedent cop, the shooter cop, and the alleged minor victim? I think so. Maybe the alleged minor victim was related to someone on the force. Maybe the decedent cop had other dirty laundry such that the police force could no longer look the other way. Maybe substance abuse was part of the problem, too. We will have to wait and see. One thing for sure, this cop must have been a really bad actor to go out this way.

Something is very wrong about how this whole thing went down. To serve an arrest warrant in the wee hours of a Saturday morning, while the officer is still on duty. They are acting like the guy was being accused of multiple homicide. This could have waited until Monday morning or at the very least, until the officer was off duty. The Paso Robles police chief was recently accused of "sexual misconduct" with fellow officers, they sure did not handle her case the way this was handled. Chief Macagni needs to realize that he is not "judge, jury and executioner".
It never ceases to amaze me that people who are totally clueless about law enforcement become instant experts on every incident that comes to their attention. I know no facts about this situation. I do wonder about a decision to arrest the man while on duty for what is usually a misdemeanor (261.5 P.C. unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor) Never a good idea to humiliate an armed person in front of or by their peers. I must say the last two traffic stops I had only resulted in a warning and the cops were courteous and even assisted me getting back into the flow of traffic. But I live in a small city 150 thou or so. My nephew who lived in much larger city, a 17 year veteran of the force a strong Christian and community leader just lost a battle to cancer. If you had seen they way his fellow officers looked after his family in the weeks before and after his passing, what a brotherhood.
