Police officer shot, killed by fellow officer trying to arrest him

SANTA MARIA, Calif. – A Santa Maria police officer was shot and killed Saturday by a fellow officer who was trying to arrest him for suspected sexual misconduct with a minor, the Santa Maria Times reported.

The slain officer was on duty when police tried to take him into custody early Saturday, the Santa Maria Police Department said in a press release.

The suspect officer allegedly drew his weapon and fired. "In response, one officer on scene fired at the suspect officer hitting him once," officials said in a news release, according to the Times.

The wounded officer was taken to a hospital, where he died.

The name of the slain officer was not released. Authorities said he was being investigated on an allegation of sexual misconduct against a minor.

I hate it when people criticize cops. They put their life on the lines, yet some ungreatful people call them mean names just because they are doing their jobs.I'm a DEA agent and I know what it feels like.I guess some people never had the experience of thinking that they might die today.

You're argument is based on the assumption that all cops sign up out of some sort of moral obligation to protect people. That is not the case, many simply sign up for the pay and care little about preserving the peace. And on a side note, as a DEA agent you earn little respect considering the amount of energy, time, and resources that are wasted by the agency you work for hounding Cannabis growers/users/distributors who are completely legal (under State law) in the states they reside in. Perhaps when the agency starts focusing on violent offenders distributing hard drugs that actually pose a mental and physical threat to Americans the agents will be respected again.

Do you know how much a cop gets paid an hour?I'm talking about your average patrol officer. Not a lot of money. They risk their lives. Not all of them may be good, but most of them are.As for the DEA-it's not an easy job.Yes the people we arrest that have/grow/distribute illegal drugs are commiting a crime.By arresting them we can see who they got the stuff from, then we get that person and ask them where they got the stuff from and so on.So we are working up on who the real "drug boss" is.It just takes time.

That's a growing sentiment in this country.

If you ever are in danger you may change your mind. Do me a favor and don't call for their help.

Fight off the situation with your eloquent command of the English language.

Live in the area, not surprised. It's a run-down cess pit where roughly half the population is Hispanic, doesn't speak a lick of English, and has little to no respect for any Caucasian person or the American culture. It's the kind of town people imagine when they talk about California's immigration problems. Troubled to the very core.

Here's why I laugh at lemmings...

I've read more than a few posts on this cop-shooting thread that have pointed out that all professions have bad apples, so it should be considered ok that police departments have some. WRONG!!! What these dopes evidently don't or can't comprehend is the fact that the police can either ruin or end your life, period. Sure, your co-worker at McDonalds might bad mouth you and cost you a promotion to french fry supervisor, but they won't wrongly convict or kill you! DUH! You think there's a bit of a difference? They potentially have your life in their hands. Aren't you glad that they cracked down on airline pilots who were drinking? Same thing...they have your life in their hands. That's why bad cops should be given at least triple penalties for being crooked. but of course that doesn't happen. I'm 58 years old and have personally known quite a few cops. The vast majority have been power hungry wiseguys with paltry IQ's. One of the few good and straight cops who I know quite well was harassed for years by his so-called "Brothers in Blue" for refusing to accept graft. His supervisors put him on foot patrol, on the midnight shift in the dead of winter, to try to get him to quit. When have you last seen a cop on foot patrol? Of course, as with so many other circumstances, most people are clueless and/or apathetic until something happens to them or someone close to them. Then they scream bloody murder, and can't believe that no one wants to listen to their tale of woe, just like they didn't previously listen or care about anyone else being screwed by bad cops. And that is precisely what allows cops(and politicians) to do whatever they want with impunity.... because most people are asleep at the wheel watching mindless garbage like American Idol with a cell phone stapled to one ear. And you wonder why this country has gone to the dogs?

First and foremost Kudos to the Santa Maria P.D. and to the quick action of the Officer who took down the shooter with one shot. As always the comments range from well thought out responses to just plain stupid ones. His NAME was not released because they always inform the relatives of the deceased . The Officer who killed the corrupt officer has to live with this shooting for the rest of his life. Even though it was more than justified and it could be said he may have saved the other officers on the scene from being shot he still has the "uncomfortable feeling " of taking someones life. There are many reasons he was approached when he was. He must have caught wind of his imminent arrest . Maybe he was going to take out the main witness (the victim) or flee and some others would be hurt in his flight from justice. We may learn later or never know. As far as "most cops " being dirty is a bunch of crap. Yes, there are plenty of corrupt ones especially in large P.D.'s. Take any segment of society and a certain percentage will be " bad apples and their range of crimes , deviant behaviour , greed fueled by temptation will greatly vary. I admire and respect the majority of our Law Enforcement for the things they do and the sacrifices made . The ultimate sacrifice is to die in the line of duty and what makes me sick is that happens the most with two of the simplest things they do. Routine traffic stops and responding to "domestic disputes'. So all of you who view the majority of our cops are evil and are out to frame and kill you buy some better weed. A type that doesn't make you as paronoid. I had the unique opportunity to work private contract security for a group hired by Homeland Security after Katrina/Rita hit and worked with an ecclectic group of current and former military and Law Enforcement people from Oct.05 to March 06. We were Federal Security Officers providing High Level Security to the American Red Cross Volunteers, FEMA, and any entity declared Federal. I worked on various assignments with kids just back from Iraq, cops from major P.D.'s, swat units, K-9 officers, retired NYC homicide detectives , current military , as well as Sheriffs and Deputies from small towns. I developed a high level of respect for the majority of these men and the few women we had amongst us.
