Retired Lt. General William G. Boykin is seen in front of a flag. He has been criticized for anti-Muslim remarks.
Updated at 9 p.m. ET
West Point issued a brief statement late Monday saying that retired Lt. Gen. William Boykin has decided to withdraw from speaking at the Feb. 8 prayer breakfast and another speaker would be lined up in his place.
Earlier
The Army is drawing protests from veterans’ and Islamic groups for inviting a retired general who many have called anti-Muslim to speak at a West Point prayer breakfast.
Lt. Gen William G. Boykin has been criticized for speeches at evangelical Christian churches in which he made disparaging remarks about Islam. Boykin has said that Muslims are trying to implement Shariah Law in the United States and that Islam is the greatest threat America faces.
According to The Associated Press, Boykin has also said that America's enemy was Satan, that God had put President George W. Bush in the White House and that one Muslim Somali warlord was an idol-worshipper.
Groups such as VoteVets.org, Military Religious Freedom Foundation, as well as Forum on Military Chaplaincy all petitioned the Pentagon to stop Boykin from speaking at the Feb. 8 breakfast, Stars and Stripes reported.
VoteVets.org told Army Gen. Raymond Odierno in a letter that allowing retired Boykin to speak at the Feb. 3 National Prayer Breakfast Service would be contrary to Army values and disrespectful to Muslim cadets.
'Incompatible with Army values'
"These remarks are incompatible with the Army values, and a person who is incompatible with Army values should not address the cadets of the United States Military Academy," VoteVets chairman Jon Soltz said in the letter, according to The Associated Press.
Army public affairs didn't immediately comment, though West Point's Lt. Col. Sherri Reed said cadets are "purposefully exposed to different perspectives and cultures" during their four years at the academy.
"The National Prayer Breakfast Service will be pluralistic with Christians, Jewish, and Muslim cadets participating," Reed said in a prepared statement. "We are comfortable and confident that what retired Lt. Gen. Boykin will share about prayer, soldier care and selfless service, will be in keeping with the broad range of ideas normally considered by our cadets."
The Council on American-Islamic Relations is also asking officials to retract the invitation.
“Having a guy like that speak at a respected institution like the U.S. Military Academy gives credibility to his extremist views of hatred toward Muslims,” Ibrahim Hooper, spokesman for Council on American Islamic Relations, told msnbc.com. “We are strong defenders of the First Amendment. What we are saying is that he not be allowed to spread views at West Point. He can go shout his hatred on the streets if he wants to.”
Hooper calls the argument that Boykin represents an alternative viewpoint “ridiculous,” and equates it with inviting a racist white leader to speak at West Point since some of the cadets are African American.
“I doubt that they would invite a KKK speaker and claim that they want to expose the students to a variety of opinions," CAIR’s national executive director, Nihad Awad, told the Associated Press, referring to the hate group the Ku Klux Klan.
Just last week, CAIR and People for the American Way had asked officials in Maryland to rescind an invitation for Boykin to speak at a prayer breakfast. Boykin attended and spoke about his faith and did not mention Islam.
Before his retirement in 2002, Boykin was chastised by military commanders for comparing the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to a holy war. Boykin later issued a written statement apologizing and said he didn't mean to insult Islam.
Pentagon investigation concluded that Boykin violated regulations by failing to make clear he was not speaking in an official capacity when he made nearly two dozen church speeches beginning in January 2002. It also found that Boykin, who made most speeches wearing his uniform, didn't get prior clearance for the remarks.
Boykin couldn't immediately be reached by msnbc.com for comment.

Political Correctness once again running amock!
He's correct that radical Islam represents the greatest threat to world peace.
REASON: Hardly. Ever heard of morality and just plain human decency? I thought the military prided themselves on values like that. Banning a bigot is not political correctness it's simply the right thing to do.
Radical Islam is a threat, as well as radical Christianity or radical Hinduism... This guy talks about Islam in general, s he is wrong!
We taxpayers pay for these military schools. The cadets live off of the taxpayers and get a free education plus a generous stipend from us.
These schools are getting to be cesspools. Why should be funding these extremist? Let these cadets start living in the real world. They really get into the academy by knowing their representatives, or good at sports.
Your comment about cadets needing to live in the real world seems off considering that many, if not most, of these cadets will soon be sent to war zones or third world countries. Frankly, I would reasses that comment as it is incredibly disrespectful to those young individuals that are entering military service, some of whom will not survive their enlistment term.
Flag Waver, Have you ever stood a post? These cesspools have assured your right and ability to assert your.....opinion. As a full fledged taxpayer myself and having served in the armed forces for seven years all I can say is "you're welcome".
He's correct that radical Islam represents the greatest threat to world peace.
Except he didn't put that radical piece in...
The one thing we don't want is to get engaged in some sort of religious conflict.
Letusreason, You are so correct.. Interprid 1 we shall put your statement on your
tombstone.. You are nuts. You can spot a libtard in seconds..
So he said
Satan IS an enemy
Whether you are a Bush fan or not God COULD have had a role (unless you don't belive in God, this statement is neutral) of putting Bush in the Whitehouse.
As to the Somali leader, it would be great if it was ONLY 1
So what is the problem, Islam is a threat? Well, when 99% of all terrorists attacks were by Islam worshippers this could be true.
Hey, he is a bit radical, doesn't seem over the top to me. He doesn't put on a pillow case and hang Muslims. There are plenty of Muslims in the military, did he go after them?
And he's an example of how religious extremists are the greatest threat to world peace.
"Cesspools"..as if. West Point has produced Presidents, is ranked 3rd after Harvard and Yale for Rhodes Scholars and more. You have no idea what you are talking about regarding how we get into the Academy. Name a college where "being good at sports" DOES NOT get you in? Stanford, yup, along with every other Ivy League. Get off your high horse and go to West Point, meet the Cadets and then comment. I had the privilege of going there after I was a private in the 7th ID(L). Real world? These are the men and women that are dying so you can enjoy your "real world" so don't tell me about the real world. I've been to Iraq and Afghanistan, retired after 22 years and am now privileged to serve my country again as a High School teacher BY CHOICE. What have you contributed to our Nation besides a great source of hot air above?
Jean, So what you're saying by agreeing with let us reason is that a cadet who is about to put his/her life on the line for THIS country, even though he/she may be muslim doesn't deserve the respect that, say a christian cadet does?
Flagwaiver....
I'm not sure which flag you wave, but I'm absolutely sure it's not the American flag. I doubt you could make it through 5 minutes of thier "real world". It's too bad that some of them will die for your FREEDOM to write such remarks about them. I'm sure though that you would make the same sacrafice for your fellow man, right? Oh wait.....
INTREPID, and those like him, would have seen our greatest WWII combat general, Patton, drummed out of the service regardless of his performance, because of his controversial (and outspoken) views on our Russian allies at the time.
That would have been a mistake. Our military commanders aren't around to parade political correctness. They're there to command our warriors.
Bigots and extremists are the biggest threat to America and the world as a whole.
Sounds like we need more generals just like him.
The real threat to world peace, is the State of Israel. They are the ones who wish to start a possible WW3 by attacking Iran, a country that has not attacked another in almost 200 years. A few fools holding signs about sharia law, is not proof of a a movement of Islam.
The statements that Islam is trying to impose sharia law, in the US, is laughable. Also the dumb statements about Iran seeking to dominate the world and all the bs about the 12th Imam. Funny no one mentions the damn fool evangelicals, who are longing for the rapture.
read what he said!! he is not a bigot!! he stated th obvious!! he dont hate the radicals,, he said they are a threat!! which they are! Wake Up Wusses!!
Everyone wants to pull th race card when their panties are in a wad!!
SMH!!
So, when a person speaks their opinion ina CHURCH, NOT IN PUBLIC, and views HIS opinions, HE is a bigot? What about all Muslim mosques that preach ahtred for America that ar in the USA? Are they bigots? Seriously, free speech should never a reason to justify keeping someone from speaking at anything. And to compare his own religous views of the Muslim faith, which I am fully interested in debating their ideologies in a public forum, to the KKK, is ludicrous. I suspect, as a christian he loves every muslim but HATES their agenda, doctrine and views of this great contry. So, if he is a bigot, then who isn't?
Flagwaver - the cadets and midsipmen who go to these institutions get anything but a free education. They work 14 hour days, surrender their personal freedom and give up the hedonism of your typical college student/18-22 year old. On top of that, they are committed to a minimum service length that includes being shot at after graduation. Actually, I think the US Government is getting a pretty good deal out of the Academies. Granted - there are scandals that show up now and then, and it is unfortunate. But, unless you can tell me what years you were at UNSA or USMA or the USAFA - you need to pipe down on what a "cesspool" is and who should be living in the real world.
You get a different perspective when you stand a post, because you expect to come home get a job and not find it overrun with (Undocumented Workers) and families killing their daughters and wives for practicing American values. Who expect and demand to get a walk because of their religion. This is why we come back to the states if we believed in and wanted to live under Shariah Law we would have stayed over there. As for the General I'd follow him into hell with handled shovel.
On a side note we may be retired, but gang-bangers and punks remember this when you start looking at a senior to rob "Old Age and Treachery will Always Overcome Youthful Exuberance." and many of us lived the creed "Death is our Business and Business is good" so when you are dead in the living-room after the breakin who do you think the cop will believe.
All of the idiots mentioned in the article were either radical Muslims like CAIR or washed up LIBERALS so who pays attention to them ? NO ONE !
flag waver,
RE: your post #1.3
Spoken like a person who has no idea what he is talking about. Yep, absolutely rediculous statements of everything but the facts.
The general happens to be right- Islam is a terrorist cult, and the dhimmi are swarming at the directions of their masters- the terrorists.
What's the matter libs? Too much diversity? I'll bet if he was complaining about the military, he'd be your poster boy, right?
Ahh... the proverbial "frog in the kettle" applies to the charming "crazy cat lady" like demeanor of the masses with minds filled with the mush of political correctness, marxist academia, and the pablum of the left wing media.
All of these people are attacking this retired General for telling the truth. Forget political correctness and tell it like it is. Do you really think that CAIR has the US's interests in mind too? They don't care.
First off, he is a RETIRED general. This guy should be able to say whatever he wants, as long as it doesn't compromise the safety and security of our troops and country. I don't think attendance at the prayer breakfast was mandatory. The people who were there chose to go, not forced to sit and listen to beliefs they do not agree with.
Second, Islam is a threat to the safety of our country, as are any belief systems that do not rely on conclusive, reasonable, and tangible evidence. Historically, all forms of religion have bred radicalism of some kind, and should be viewed with a wary eye.
Let other people speak as they wish, and just learn to accept that not everyone in the world say only things that you agree with.
@cowdogg, you are correct! I grew up in the military, and always heard nothing good about "trade school" guys. That is until I enlisted and went to basic training. We had a West Point Cadet with us as a trainer. He was well informed, intelligent, and genuinely nice. He was tough, but fair, and he cared about each and every one of us. I know that some of us would not have graduated if not for his one-on-one help. He showed us what leadership is truly about.
My prejudice about cadets could be compared to others prejudice with Muslims. Once you put your fears and ignorance aside, you might actually learn something.
While I appreciate those that volunteer for military service, I resent the fact that those that choose to go that route routinely throw it back in the face of those that did not. As if their decision to join, for whatever reason, makes their opinion more valid than those that did not, because we never "stood a post". The fact that you became a mercenary (yes, I said mercenary, look it up), and I did not does not make your opinion any more or less valid.
Remind me again how the invasion of Iraq, under false pretenses, served to protect my freedom?
Nicely put toy, I too had a platoon leader from the Point, and he was putting his career on the line trying to care of us, and we didn't know anything about until about a year later.
Additionally, my friend's son went to the Point, and is currently in Afganistan. Cadets do pay a nominal tuition, and get paid at the E-5 rate. Not big bucks, just considering their dry cleaning bills.
Screw the muslims and screw Islam as a whole. The whole world is being held hostage by these butt-hurt infants and their victim complex. They produce nothing, invent nothing, and haven't contributed a positive thing to humanity in a millennium. They're getting a free ride on this planet, living off oil, and still have the nerve to complain about bigotry?
No greater bigotry exists than that spawned by this culture of hate and backwardness.
If they can't tolerate the sort of criticism that Jews and Christians have grown accustomed to, then they can all commit ritual suicide as a sign of protest. I'm sure Allah will be more than happy to see 1.5 billion of his favorite whiners all at once.
You know what's stupid?
Radical Muslims
You know what else is stupid?
Evangelical Christians
And what else?
People who think one is less stupid than the other.
Indepundit -- He was in uniform when he spoke; that makes it look like an official statement of the ARMY, not a personal opinion.
Oh, these are the funniest posts I've read in a long time. So, because you happen to agree with this guy's particular brand of bigotry, spouted without permission and in uniform in only Christian churches so soon after 9/11, then anyone who disagrees is a...what were those charming words you all use...libtard, Marxist, politically correct, anti-American Jesus hater? (Really, you guys, can't you come up with something a little more original...the same hackneyed attempts to slander the other side are getting so boring).
Well, then, since you're all so "tolerant" and "open" to opposing view points, how about we sign up the Reverend Wright or Warren Jeffs or those delightful Westboro Baptist people to speak at the prayer breakfast? You should have no problem with that, right, since you're all foaming at the mouth about how horrible it is that groups (including the military chaplaincy!) don't believe it is right that serving cadets are to be vilified and insulted by some retired blowhard.
RalphH You set a record. Only one vote (probably your own) and you got collapsed. Sane comments that are relative to the story go a lot further than the converse.
A comment here referred to discussing the Islamic wars and we should not become involved with "religious wars."
I believe anyone who thinks these are "religious wars" (as we would define them... i.e., the Crusades over a thousand years ago) might not have thought about what a Theocracy is. And would any impact our country?
It's important, I feel, that we do know that the Arabian Spring's countries are Theocracies; those of North Africa and those Northern countries which were created from the fallen Ottoman Empire after World War I.
There was an attempted Theocracy in American History, going back to the Puritans who settled in Massachusetts because their religion denied what had become the Church of England, when Henry VIII broke away from Catholicism and the Pope about a century before. In those days a state religion was inextricably a part of of the ruling entity. And refuting that power is why "Freedom of Religion" is in our Constitution... our new country's irrevocable stand against a state-mandated religion.
The Puritans ruled their settlements autonomously. They are memorable for the date 1692 when they executed 19 citizens because they were witches denying the Puritan definition of God. The Salem Witch Hunts became a metaphor for unjust persecution of dissenters in major controversial issues.
Just defining terms, folks. Not entering an opinion... yet :) Later, though, because i do think it is relevant to how our Constitution is meant.
Yashmak....then they should stop making political speeches and do their jobs ! When retired they should refrain from using their uniform and rank to promote personal views, and as "someone" once said, "just fade away."
Cowdog says, "Name a college where "being good at sports" DOES NOT get you in?"
Ok. Here goes.
Caltech
Lar-345817
The religion is Islam; it's followers are Muslims.
Since you seem to enjoy throwing out a percentage, tell us this one; of one billion Muslims on Planet Earth, what percentage support terrorism? because, you know, 94.3% of all statistics in debates like this are pulled out of the gluteus.
I think satan put Bush in the White House....
Jean-982597, you are suspended for a day for violating rule # 1 of the Code of Honor.
To the whiners above -
Firstly, you should know that a high percentage of MRFF clients are Christian: Catholic, Mainstream Protestant, even Evangelical. They believe in their faith, but they also believe in the separation of church and state. So don't go whining on about a bunch of "muslims and atheists" that are ruining it for everyone. It's you who's ruining it.
Secondly, nobody is debating whether this guy should have been allowed to say those things. That's what freedom of speech is: the right to say ignorant BS. Now, many say he should not have been in uniform for the occasion. I don't know the UCMJ backwards and forwards, so I can't make a call on that.
However, having the right to say bigoted and moronic platitudes does not guarantee that people won't call you on it, ridicule you for it, criticize you for it, or anything else. It also does not guarantee you the right to other speaking engagements. Just because you have a right to speak, doesn't mean you can force others to listen to you. There are social and even business-related consequences to your speech. The government can't do anything to you (unless you're convicted of inciting panic, inciting a riot, inciting violence, threatening with bodily harm, threatening the life of a public figure, or revealing classified government documents - and only in the last do they have the option of prior restraint). However, social circles tend to judge differently.
Finally, yes, his remarks were bigoted. He has gone on to further show his bigotry and ignorance, and in no way presents a decent argument, much like most of the posters on here. When 84% of verifiable terrorism acts being plotted in the US are set up by Christians, then you don't have a leg to stand on. When Christians are forced to police their own or risk being subpoenaed by Congress, then you may have a right to complain. When Christians are actually discriminated against for their faith (not for being annoying, job-deserting prats), then you have a legitimate complaint. But none of that is going on. You're not being discriminated against, you're just feeling butthurt because you don't get your delusional quota in every day.
When they do, and along with the KKK also include the Communist Party, the Nazi Party, Eugenics, Atheists, Nihilists, Pagans and Witches, and others in these gatherings and speeches, then we can truthfully say that there is freedom of speech..and exposure to a variety of opinions is honestly intended and being made in earnest.
Till then it is same old, same old brainwashing - lies, deceit and hypocrisy!

Boykin has said that Muslims are trying to implement Shariah Law in the United States and that Islam is the greatest threat America faces.
And that is the absolute truth!! But not just in America; they're trying to spread Sharia through western Europe too. Don't be leive me? Google it! You'll see them with signs in England calling for sharia.
Or maybe the stupidity exhibited by Americans like yourself is the greatest threat America faces.
Or maybe the naivety of Americans like YOU is the greatest threat America faces.
Muslims are not the greatest threat to America, 4 more years of Tweedle Dee and Tweedledum in the Whitehouse is
or maybe the stupidity exhibited by you , is noticed by everyone , but you .
yes I agree 100%. Islam is our greatest threat they are THE DEVIL from the EAST.
soazDan,
Holding up signs is a right guaranteed by the constitution. And the Constitution is what our military MUST defend and uphold. Do you feel the same about people who are trying to spread Christianity to other nations?
When America goes to war, it should not, must not be a religious war!. It cannot be one religion against another. It must be about upholding democratic ideals. When it becomes a 'holy' war, then we have become our enemy. The line between us and them disintegrates. If you rationalize a war on the grounds that your god is better than theirs, then you can rationalize atrocities, because, after all, you are doing it in the name of God.
This backward thinking man should never have made it to the rank of general in the first place. In America, he can stand on a corner and espouse anything he wants to (including Sharia law or Christian law). But he can't use the US military to wage his own personal holy war.
Hopefully, Osama bin Laden's brand of pseudo-Islam will not be one of the 'pluraslistic' views given credibility. Except by Boykin, who apparently buys into it as a legitimate representation of true Islam.
How sad.
Another evangelical nut job. You soazdan are what is wrong with america.
Here's another absolute truth!! The US is waging holy war in Iraq and Afghanistan. Don't believe me? Google it! In fact, there's a 3-star General going around churches saying exactly that.
Ok, the above was sarcasm to make the point that just because there are nutty people saying nutty things, it doesn't make it so. And Boykin's an intolerant nut who shouldn't be afforded the prestige that comes with addressing such a storied military academy like West Point.
"When America goes to war, it should not, must not be a religious war!. It cannot be one religion against another."
You neglect the possibility of a religion that goes to war against a secular society like our own. Would we, as you suggest, simply not fight? No.
Our generals lead warriors, not departments of political correctness. This slavish devotion to some illusory right not to be offended would have seen some of our best generals of all time drummed out of the military based on their (at the time) incendiary views. It's their job to protect our nation and win wars, not satisfy the ridiculous P.C. notions of those with all-too-thin skin.
islam is trying to implement sharia law?....sounds familiar, only that Europeans tried to implement their beliefs on other cultures and called them "beasts" and "primitive"...oh wait, that was in the early 1500's to~, what?... now?
look, those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. only that the victims in this case could be Americans. Let's be real, that is not going to happen here. no matter who is in the white house. it's time you scardey cats start looking towards yourself and think logically..."Would we really let this happen?"...then look in the mirror and cuss yourself out for being stupid.
So if you're correct, should the armed services discharge all the loyal Muslim people who have enlisted and are serving?
Name one place in America that is trying, in apparent obscurity, to implement sharia law.
lets see, people are blind, or something. we hear about the law of islam all the time in the news. in any country, including the US. there was just 2 stories almost back to back. guy and his mother kill his wife because she didnt bear him a son. another guy and his wife killed all 3 kids, and his (lol)co-wife, because they too like the previous, and all the other family related crimes all fall under shaira law. spelling wrong? too bad.
Kansas.
Except they don't call it "sharia law"; they call it Judeo-Christianity.
It has been a while back but I did read that two muslims asked a judge in Florida to use shari law to handle a dispute between them while in court. Just saying.
energizer.bunny.1237, you are suspended for a day for violating rule # 1 of the Code of Honor.
Yashmack,
This has nothing to do with political correctness. That's a hack, first "go-to" rational used by the intellectually challenged because they can't think of anything else to say. Never mind that there is no sin in being correct, politically or otherwise, the alternative of course is to be incorrect. I don't understand why some people see that as a virtue. Regardless, I'm not concerned with someone’s feelings in this matter, be they Islamist or an American General. The point being that the general has stated his obvious motivation to go to war is to protect HIS cherished religious beliefs. It's clear he doesn't understand the system of government he has been hired to protect. He's taking orders from God. And I'm not comfortable with the notion that someone's interpretation of God's will will necessarily have my interests (or America’s) at heart.
Your statement "You neglect the possibility of a religion that goes to war against a secular society like our own. Would we, as you suggest, simply not fight? No" makes no sense. The motivation of anyone who attacks the US, be they political, religious, or economic (sometimes one is disguised as the other) is irrelevant. We would of course vigorously defend ourselves. It may be a religious war for those who attack us, but it would not be for us.
Political correctness is the greatest threat to America.
CHRISTIAN: No, bigotry and intolerance are the greatest threats.
No intrepid, political correctness is .That and islam .They go hand in hand . You're the enabler .
No! Actually the RELIGION is the greatest threat to America.
So let's ALL be POLITICALLY INCORRECT and call this embarrassment what he TRULY is..
A racist, idiot and a religious zealot.
Thanks, "Somedude," for showing us the way.
Have a nice day.
Aw shutyeryap ,shutyeryap .
He can say whatever he wants. Everybody else does.
As these post show christianity is a threat to the world. Cant blame other countries from wanting to get rid of racist morons like yourselves.
'Politcally correct' is just a term of convenience for individuals who want to express their bigotry against an entire group.
It is a completely meaningless term except as a cover for bigotry.
For Rush Limbaugh, it is 'politically correct' to hate all blacks, Latinos, Muslims, Democrats, and so on.
Yes Steve they are. Someday soon, unless more people speak up, we will be very sorry we let this happen!!
"CHRISTIAN: No, bigotry and intolerance are the greatest threats."
Nah, it's a populace naiive enough to believe that our generals are representatives of some Department of Political Correctness, rather than the leaders of our warriors. They lead the troops that protect our ability to have a society with such thin skin that we can no longer even HEAR controversial speech without going into hysterics over it. Historically, nearly all of our most competent and effective combat generals have had outspoken and controversial views.
According to The Associated Press, Boykin has also said that America's enemy was Satan, that God had put President George W. Bush in the White House and that one Muslim Somali warlord was an idol-worshipper
What an embarrasment for all the people in uniform! If you guys want to have a bozo speaking at your celebrations, at least take him out of uniform. He should be wearing the GOP-Tea Party flag -The confederate flag- He has no business wearing any other flag or uniform.
Invite Carrot top if you have run of people interested in going to your functions. At least he will make some sense of all of you!!!!
Sheisssss!!!!!
INTREPID thinks that PC and bigotry are the same animal. Shows you how stupid stupid can be.
100% correct
Even though he is retired now, he should be stripped of his pension for violating UCMJ rules by speaking IN UNIFORM at prior events:
Polictical correctness is so blind. As pointed out in an email I received last year, outlined most of the horrific events over the last 30 years or so. The point, most were committed by radical Islamics.. No one knew who they were, suspected or pointed a finger until each one of these Islamic groups and members of, committed these horrific crimes... I think this General is spot on, and he does not pussyfoot around.
This country is loosing its grip... we are raising pussies instead of MEN. American needs to get its Ba%%$ back....
So our next step according to this general is to sew crosses on our military uniforms and make this a war between Christianity and Islam, I suppose? That went well during the crusades...
Operation Iraqi Freedom didn't begin until 2003 so unless the General was speaking about Operation Desert Storm there is no way he could have been commenting on the "wars in Iraq and Afghanistan being Holy Wars" before his 2002 retirement.
I will agree that bringing divisive, anti-Muslim rhetoric into what should be a non-denominational prayer breakfast is a wrong answer !!
Religion itself is the greatest threat to not only the USA but the human race as a whole. The "God" Myth is a WMD that dehumanizes anyone who chooses not to believe, this gives the "believers" the "God" given right (in their mind) to exterminate all non-believers.
Bigotry. BIGOTRY. Get serious. The general nailed it. Wake up America . . we're being run over by the supposidly politically-savy crowd who don't have a clue about what's happening in/to this great nation. And that's from a prior military, who has ah . . been there.
It's only bad when it's mis-used by those looking for self empowerment like the terrorist groups posing as muslims, I may prefer reason over mythology but have also learned in it's proper context religion provides a structure that some need in order to keep from self destructing. As far as this individual compared to what is said about christians by so called news media personalities he's said nothing offensive, islamic radicles want the barbaric and savage Shariah Law implemented in this and every country thats fact. Islam being our greatest threat please they're stuck in the 7th century where shariah law comes from our greatest threat comes from the socialist communists like obama who stand for everything that's against the american way of life and the opportunists like the clintons, gore, pelosi, and reid, ect. actually they are just the implements the true threat is us whether we sell our souls to them out of laziness, selfishness, and greed.
Conservative religious zealouts are doing their best to run our political infrastructure. If you only listen to these politically conservative heratics and their self contradicting rants, you'd realize that this General is small potatoes. But, he exemplifies the problem with mixing religion with war and politics. Religion is more corrupt than one realizes and very little of it is founded in truth.
Islam's sharia law, Santorum's extremist evangelical law, Bachman's Regent University Biblical law, Vatican law, they are all the same to me, they are completely meaningless. Common sense alone tells me not to hurt others, if you need a supreme being to watch over you day and night to make sure you aren't being a naughty boy then you have bigger problems than ANY religion can cure.
I commend Lt. Gen. Boykin for exercising his First Amendment right of Freedom of Speech. The First Amendment also deals with religious intolerance.
Unfortunately, by exercising his Freedom of speech, he manifested his religious intolerance!
"The First Amendment of the United States Constitution - (the exception being "manifest destiny" which was manufactured by the prevailing powers as well as the church, to suspend this "right" for all North American indigenous peoples, most notably during the 1800's and well into the 1900's. This is evidenced by the brutality of the infamous boarding schools designed to "kill the indian; save the man" by erasing all manner of religious practice, language, culture, traditions, and beliefs)."
Lest we forget the past, our future will look very dim.
The term "politically correct" is one of those weasel words--it is a cover for those on the right who want to claim that even mild efforts to force them to not make claims like "most of the horrific events for the last 30 years or so" were "committed by radical Islamics" (by the by, that should be "Islamists"). Kind of depends on what one defines as "horrific events" whether or not you will exclude anything that fits the pattern as not being part of "most" and how close or far away you make "last 30 years or so."
That is, this is a weasel-worded phrase. If I mention a specific event--such as the murders of women and children by members of the military, women and children who were shot execution-style at close range and definitely not by accident, admittedly so--that will be called an "unfortunate by-product of war" and excluded from the term horrific event. If I demonstrate that several "horrific events" were not committed by Islamists, then I will be told "oh, I said most not all." If I point out a great number of events that are indisputable--they can be eliminated as too early or too late for the 30 years or so.
That is, phrases like this are themselves acts of "political correctness" in that they are delimiting history in their own peculiar way and eliminating those interpretations which are not convenient to a particular point of view. It's a little like the way religious Americans, Christians and true Christians are now deployed by conservative fundamentalist evangelical Christians to only mean themselves and to exclude all liberal fundamentalist evangelical Christians, all progressive evangelical Christians, all non-evangelical Christians, and everyone who is religious but not Christian. This is the same way that real Americans is used to exclude everyone but lock-step, far-right conservative Americans; the same way that even Republicans cannot be Republicans but are RINOs if they do not fit the definitions of the far right.
My point here is that while I might agree that "political correctness" is blind--the people I have in mind are in sympathy with those posting in this thread to criticize the "politically correct." There is a term in psychology called projection--those who are delusional often project the problem on others; anyone who thinks everyone else is crazy is most likely, him or herself, crazy. The same thing is often true of those who want to demonize everyone around them as stupid or ignorant.
Hate to break the news to you, but even people who are Islamic often do not like Islamists, the same way that people who are European American Southerns do not (and in the past did not) like the KKK and people who are German do not like Nazis and people who are African American do not like the Black Panthers. There is a huge distinction between Islamics and Islamists--just as there is a huge distinction between people who are Christian and those who beat their children into submission (and often death) or enable marriage of middle-aged and elderly men to 14-year-old girls and justify both with Biblical scripture.
No--Islamics are not responsible for "most of the horrific events of the last 30 years or so" unless you are cherry-picking your events and your time-period. And, it is not very difficult at all to find many, many more horrific events committed by Christians. Look at the Phillipines in the early 20th century--when they were "uplifting and Christianizing the Filipinos"--and you will find some pretty horrific events, including the mass murder of an entire island's worth of people "above the age of 10" because a dozen or so US soldiers had their throats slit by local soldiers who didn't really care for being occupied by US soldiers who shot Filipinos like they were coyotes. Remember that while Hitler might have been an aetheist at the end of his life, he started out a Christian, and many SS soldiers and officers remained devout Christians for their whole lives. Seriously--the list is very, very, very long.
This doesn't mean that Christianity is a bad religion--it means that some of its practioners were and are hypocrites. Similarly, many Islamists are similarly hypocrites, as Islam itself is a peaceful religion, an Abrahamic religion, a Semitic religion that partakes of the first five books of the Bible (the Pentateuch) just as Christianity does. It is terribly old to listen to the right pretend that they are not, themselves, perverting words to their own political ends while criticizing others for theoretically (and sometimes literally--they are not always wrong) doing the same thing. The old saying that when one points a finger, one has three pointing back at oneself, comes to mind.
The problem with Islam is not religious, it is that Islam is not just a religion, it is a political system as well. This is why every predominantly Muslim nation on earth is either ruled by a dictator or is an Islamic Republic. It is only when these nations are ruled by an autocratic leader who believes in tolerance that people of other faiths can live and thrive in the nation. Just look at Egypt. Under Mubarak Egypt was a fairly open society where, for the most part, people of all religions were able to coexist peacefully. This was because Mubarak was a secularist who would not tolerate the Muslim extremists attacking people of other faiths, or even flavors of Islam that disagreed with theirs. Since the fall of Mubarak and the rise to prominence of the Muslim Brotherhood, the violence between different religious groups has grown considerably.
I am all for religious freedom but Islam, by it's very nature, does not seem to allow for tolerating other religions. This retired general is simply stating a very uncomfortable truth. Our liberal western ideals say that people of all faiths should be able to worship as they choose. The problem is what do you do when a religion comes along whose worship in and of itself includes trying to rid the world of those who do not agree with their beliefs?!?! This is what the world is faced with when dealing with certain flavors of Islam. I am not saying that all Muslims believe this way or feel that it is their duty to kill infidels. However, there are very large Muslim groups who do feel this way. These are not small, isolated groups of extremists, but rather large Muslim sects that believe this way. How is the rest of the world supposed to tolerate them practicing their religion when their practicing of their religion includes killing anyone who does not?!?! Freedom of religion only works when all religions recognize the rights of the other religions and those that believe in them to exist!!!
@beanathome,
terrific post, you nailed it! unfortunately too many people on this thread are not open to sane, reasonable ideas. instead they would prefer to cling to their bigotry and blame games while labeling the rest of us as "politically correct" just because we disagree with them.
Sad. Just sad that we have come to this. These are not the values that have made us a respected nation in the world.
As a veteran, I know that a soldier cannot speak in a public venue in uniform without permission from command. Lt. Gen Boykin knew what he was doing. He and I both took an oath to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States from all enemies foreign and domestic. The folly of the Carter administration was believing that the radical Muslims would deal with the West as Westerners.
The current Administration cannot claim such ignorance. Islam teaches that it is no lie when a Muslim lies to an Infidel. The doctrine of Islam radical or not is to convert the world or enslave it. Those of you who claim no religious faith, that will be your choice. The general is no fool to understand that there is an enemy that is intent on yhe destruction of the American way of life.
Just to show that I'm not politically correct, I think bigots and racists should be crucified on street corners all over America, but the real threat facing America is money in politics. Far and away the biggest threat we face as a nation. Period.
Unfortunately all religions deny the rights of other religions to exist. All religions claim they alone hold the key to heaven. This INSTANTLY and without exception dehumanizes those who choose to believe otherwise. As we have seen recently with the New Apostolic Reformation, they not only dehumanized the opposition, they have went as far as to demonize them. I have worked very closely with many of C. Peter's followers and they have taken this to mean that the normal rules of engagement, such as ethics, honesty and even legality don't apply because they truly believe that demons control the Democratic party. Now Wagner is insane and truly believes this but many have used this ploy throughout history to justify the complete annihilation of entire populations, just read the old testament for plenty of examples.
The greatest threat to those who are STILL SERVING in the military, is the perception that the American Military is on a crusade against Islam.
I wonder how many people who lost family members to IEDs will appreciate this ignorant blowheart?
Extremely COWARDLY to go around and make stupid statements like that AFTER you're out of danger.
I wonder how the translators who were part of the team who just rescued the two American kidnap victims in Somalia feel about this General's smirky stupidity?
Coward.
Q) What's the difference between Christianity and Islam?
A) There isn't any.
steve-1904655 and shut yer yap, you are both suspended for a day for violating rule # 1 of the Code of Honor.
Islam IS the greatest threat to civilization -- that is, unless the moderates step up and say something. Sheep don't bother me. Bearded fu*ktards with bombs strapped to their chest and shouting to their imaginary pal DO.
JON: And ignoramuses such as yourself are civilization's greatest danger.
based on what?
intrepid, you are uneducated, or wrongly educated. you are calling others, what you are yourself. you need to wake up and study history because history repeats itself and is always enabled by the ignorant! radical islam is blind to your political correctness and you are blind to their intent! all your fellow fools need to wake up!
'wrongly educated?'
Talk about 'political correctness'!
Intolerant, narrow mided bigotry is the enemy, whether it comes from Ayman al Zawahiri or a nativist American kook.
Some of you want a global war between evil and intolerant pseudo-Islamic zealots and evil, equally intolerant American bigots.
The rest of us want to live cooperatively in peace with our tolerant neighbors, and have no use for either side.
In the war against bigotry and intolerance, I'd rather side with reasonable Muslims against murderers, than with bigots who only want to match indiscriminate murder for indiscriminate murder.
I agree. And this CAIR has the White House in their pocket. They are nothing but a radical muslim underground seeking the overthrown and subversion of America by these muslim extremists. If you take time to read their literature, you will see there is no such thing as a peace loving muslim Their entire teaching and indoctrination DEMANDS the over thrown and subjugation of any NON-muslim peoples. They are indeed a danger and a threat to America and democracy.
It is time we forget about political correctness and do what is BEST for America!!!!!!!!!!
God had put President George W. Bush in the White House
The only other statement that would make this asinine comment even more asisnine, is if he ever asks the pope to make George W. Bush a saint!!
Ha ha ha ha ha....I would not doubt it...things are that insane and crazy with these people! They just escaped altogether from an asylum!!!!!
oh shut up john-2730330 and Walter-1078691 and native social u guys dont have enough common sense to realize that not all of them r terrorists do u, u idiots.
Nationalism and religious fundamentalism usually surge when a country or region is under attack. A good study of the modern history of the Middle East will inform the reader that the west has been the aggressor for the last century. Just look at Iran (Persia): 1921, England backs the coup that destroys Persia's constitutional monarchy; 1941, England and Russia invade Iran, remove the enlightened Reza Kahn from the throne and replace him with his wastrel son Mohammad Reza; 1953, the CIA overthrows the democratically-elected Dr. Mohammad Mossadegh, puts Mohammad Reza Shah back on the throne; the CIA and Mossad then devise the Shah's dread secret police, the SAVVAK; after the 1979 revolution, America breaks diplomatic relations with Iran and takes steps to destroy her economy. Contrast this with our attitude toward communist Vietnam. I just bought some storage batteries made in Vietnam. Weren't they the enemy 30 years ago? It's time to reestablish diplomatic relations with Iran and tell the Christian nutcases to get stuffed.
You don't get to be a General in the USArmy by being some racist hatemonger. That's too bad because if we had one in control over in that @!$%#hole they call Afghanistan maybe he could show them the one and only path to Allah-Death
nativesocalX, Radical Islam didn't @!$%# up your economy. It isn't responsible for the 45 million+ people on food stamps in your country, nor the millions of destroyed families, the millions unemployed, the millions going bankrupt and homeless, the millions turning to drink and drugs and the millions stressed, despressed and in mental torment out of uncertainty about their future. The threat to your country has always been the bankers and you have been reading the wrong history books(or more likely, if you had a brain that was capable of reasoned thinking) you wouldn't come to any other conclusion. Radical Islam as a threat to America is the diversionary bogeyman of today that's helping the bankers get away with their crimes. But you knew of course because you are wide awake?
Your own words say it best though... 'history repeats itself and is always enabled by the ignorant'
Can you remember the bombs at Waco (USA) and Oklahoma- I do believe they were quite Christian there, and a lot of much smaller ones all over the globe--as in Christian battles going way back, especially what we have on record in to-days EU. USA is however still going at it like the Vikings and Christanity over a thousand years ago, hope we will soon become civilized!
Jon, thanks for reminding me that racist, ignorant pukes are still alive a well in America. Now ESAD.
Chintito in D major....Entirely correct in saying that the family owned world banking cartels and the diversionary boogey man tactics are a fact in the societies of yesteryear as well as the societies of today. Amschel Mayer Baur Rothschild and his five offspring have funded both sides of every war since the French Revolution.
Glenn George
....."You don't get to be a General in the USArmy by being some racist hatemonger".....
On Glenn George's NEXT post, he will claim that President Obama is a racist hatemonger.
Have a nice day.
The Muslim birth rate far exceeds any other religion's birth rate. Muslims will be the largest percentage of all the people in the world. Now we worry about Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Egypt, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Libya and how many more countries that have customs far different than ours. It is time to stop trying to bribe this countries but to defend ourselves against them. We can not teach them to be similar to us and we can only be aware of the dangers they pose. Separate the world into spheres of influence and contain them.
I have no doubt that an Islamic speaker promoting Sharia Law would be welcome at this prayer breakfast! Freedom of speech is now tied to political correctness everywhere in our society!
^And it is bad our great country allows the freedom of speech how?
Satanick
what part of it being tied to PC coddling doesn't bother you...hard to have free speech when it is censored for not being PC....
No, it's people like you who cannot f*cking read that are dangerous. This goes for the rest of the stumps who failed to get the gist of the post, so I'll try again:
"Sheep" (i.e. most Muslims) do not bother me. "F**ktards with bombs" DO.
What part of this do you (a) not agree with; and (b) fail to understand?
Really people... really.
Jon-2730330, you are suspended for a day for violating rule # 5 of the Code of Honor.
Don't troll all Muslims, please.
God through the Lord Christ has taught Christians not to be in isolations, but "love each other" and "love your enemy" and "do not commit adultery."
Lord Christ has said to the expert of the law that "Go and do likewise" (mercy).
Hold on...
I'm trying to find the section in the Bible that says, "Go forth and urinate on dead soldiers".....
Have a nice day.
Jesus is Jewish.
Cool, maybe that explains why Jesus saves.
And you won't find it in any military regulation or instruction either. But the Bible has been used to denigrate people for centuries (women, blacks, native populations, gays, other myths (sorry, religions), promote and defend slavery, segregation, etc, etc, etc.....). I know, I know they aren't REAL CHRISTIANS (TM)!
CAIR is the support group for Islamic terrorists abroad, based here in the US. Go research where they distribute their funding.
you are a moron, of course they distribute there fund to Islamic counties you idiot, that is were we need the outreach, to prevent moderates from getting radicalized.
Your perception is not accurate. Do your home work Joe!
No Joe, you are incorrect. UDunnoBro is correct in his claim that CAIR is a front group for terrorist organizations as is evidenced by a number of their founders being indicted for providing material support (funding) to terrorist organizations on at least one occasion and the organization listed as an unindicted co-conspirator in another.
Why don't you give us a hint?
joe you libitard idiot, they fund terror, funny how the facts seem to bounce off a libitard. Too bad you were not in the WTC when reality hit
drdarby...to say you wish someone had been at the WTC when it went down is just wrong.
It's one thing to not agree with what someone else says, but you, along with a few others on here that get a little too worked up, to wish others harm isn't right.
Try to act your age...unless, of course you really ARE 12, in which case go away...
And they wonder why Christians have a bad name in this country...it's not fair all are painted with the hate and, I'm going to say it, down right stupidity of the vocal few, as I'm sure there are more people who actually follow the teachings of the New Testament instead of just pounding their Bibles and talking loudly as if they do. Just like it isn't fair that all Muslims are painted as terrorists and all Jewish people are painted as radical Zionists and everyone else is just a godless "haughty intellectual". But, it is said that we judge others by ourselves, so I guess the rabid Christian fundamentalists are only able acknowledge extremism in others. It's kinda how they roll.
Now, how come I didn't get the memo that only Christians, devout Christians, died in the World Trade Center?
All this time I was under the impression that people from ALL walks of life, INCLUDING MUSLIMS, were working there. Hence the name, WORLD TRADE CENTER.
Have a nice day.
drdarby17 banned for death trolling another user.
Terrible history too.
No, thanks.
The Council on American-Islamic Rleations is the biggest Muslim terrorist front group in the world. When will someone in America stand up to them and shut them down and run them out of the US? Obama? Never. He's a coward like the ship's captain.
He should be losing a rank and being disharged for the crap he has said.
ENOUGH with the Xtian Taliban in this country!
so how many Christians in this country set off suicide bombs just because someone does not believe what they want them to believe.....still waiting.
Hey Bob3241043, He is retired, you dope. I am an Infidel!!!
....and you will be waiting a long time.
The problem in reality is religion. With religion, most likely, they will never get along. I say ban all forms of religion.
While not suicidal, there was Tim McVeigh and Erik Rudolph.
Bob,
Make an attempt at reading and COMPREHENDING what you read.
The man is a RETIRED Lt. General, not active military. He cannot be reduced in rank and discharged.
"The Covenant, The Sword, and the Arm of the Lord" movement or the Oklahoma City bombing???
nolastname: Hopefully every damn one of them, IF some other country invades us. I would, wouldn't you?
by the way... you are confused in your statement- it's us that wanted them to believe what we believe. understand? you are why christians are dangerous. you cannot figure out what is up vs. down.
Hey Bob, he should be losing a rank for telling the truth?
Bob: The General is welcome to express his opinion especially to West Point cadets. West Point cadets are among the brightest students in our university system today. They are more than capable to form their own opinions - West Point like ever other higher education institution offers an opportunity for many with diverse opinions to come in and speak. It is called Freedom of Speech - the hypocrisy of your rant is bigoted and truly anti-American.
Has nolastname ever heard of the Oklahoma City Bombing? Not a suicide bombing but a bombing none the less. How about the church bombings, don't be so ignorant, extremist christians are no better than extremist islamist. Nut jobs are nut jobs.
what about freedom of speech ?
To: nolastname,
I can name you some good Christian bombers and they were too wimpy and puffed up to even be suicide bombers:
Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols. Nichols, especially chastized the US, the government and all of us, under the name and authority of Jesus Christ. Go read his trial transcripts and you'll see what a deluded heretic he is. Also, check out any right wing Christian militia! They continue to spread Armagedon amongst anyone who is considered subversive, like maybe a different pigment or gender orientation.
Also, don't forget the women's clinics or abortion clinic bombers! Again, they spread the message of Christianity pretty well...killing the very lives they say they wish to save.
Look, religious fervor does nothing good....nothing. I don't care if you are Christian, Hindu, Jew or Muslim! It's all a ridiculous narcisstic waste.
Nolastname.....
..."so how many Christians in this country set off suicide bombs just because someone does not believe what they want them to believe.....still waiting"...
Hold on...
I'm still counting.....
Nah, forget it. I can't count every single armed forces troop and preditor drone operator AND all the Tim McVeighs, too.
Give me another assignment.
Have a nice day :)
nolastname...
They may not be suicide bombers, but radical Christians still kill in the name of their god. Remember abortion clinic bombings and doctor asassinations? Many KKK members claim to be Christians (at the very least they're ultra conservative...which is often associated with the religious right). How about the Christians that believe that god killed American soldiers to punish sinful behavior perpetrated by the rest of us. God hates fags, etc? Really? God hates? I thought god's love was supposed to be open to all. Can't anyone be redeemed in the eyes of god? Didn't he supposedly send his son to die for our sins...the same son who taught love thy neighbor and turn the other cheek?
Radical Muslims don't have the rights to crazy religious behavior. Many Christians exhibt it too.
he retired almost 8 years ago It is my hope that all of these post came from people that have been sterilized
Love the people just do not let them breed.
1. Suicide bombers do not, generally, set off bombs "just because someone does not believe what they want them to believe."
2. Google the words, Straw man.
3. Google the words, Reflective Projection.
4. Google the words, Illusory Superiority.
5. Have a nice day :)
Shut yer yap, that was the best post I've read all day. Well done!
Try Google for deluded apologist
RTColorado.
See above.
Have a nice day :)
Thank you, FinallyProud.
I find it strange that so many organizations are formed, the CAIR being one of them just to suppress the truth!
Ibrahim Hooper has made it plain on many occassions that he isn't here to ensure Islam's status as a religion among religions, but rather to ensure that it becomes the supreme religion, so everything he says should be taken with this as its context. If we don't see the Catholic Legion of Decency as a Civil Rights group (and I for one certainly do not), then we should not view this group, CAIR, as one either. Representing the minority radical element of a minority religion is no more or no less agreeable than representing the minority radical element within a majority religion. CAIR has every right to exist; but we need to recognize that if its values are ever truly implemented, then no such groups for any of the rest of us will be allowed to exist from that point foward.
Sounds to me like the US government is establishing the god of Abraham as the only true god by participating in this national prayer breakfast thing. AS one who does not believe in the god of Abraham I am truly offended that my tax dollars are supporting this.
He is the only true God and my friend you will meet him whether you believe in him or not.
I'm wondering if this is a "mandatory" attendance type thing. And even if it is "voluntary", what the "unofficial" repercussions for not attending.
John- why don't you do some research before you talk. This God of Abraham "aka God" is the same God this nation was FOUND on. This nation was built to escape religous prosecution. Do some research on history before you bash "God of Abraham" and realize christain religion was of the first religions in this nation, so they have every right to say what they believe in. People like you are hateful and disgraceful for going against a "God of Abraham" that only teaches love and how to treat eachother with love, but yet you hate those teachings and those religions. I'm offended by YOUR statemant.
John-15611967 the United States was founded as a Christian country and so I hope it remains. Be happy that your tax dollars and those of millions more have been spent to tolerate you and your beliefs. A great illness of our society is that it has slowly surrender the rights and values of the majority to the rights of minorities. Those minorities, like you, are intolerant of the majority that has given them protection of their belief. What an irony. That is costing us the values that once united us into the morst powerful nation on earth. Societies are united and strenthened by common beliefs and values and weakened by diversity.
Pretty sure that all faithful Muslims see their faith as the true Ibrahmic tradition.
Johsmi- this is the whole problem. Your statement that He is the only true God. That statement is exactly what all other religions live by. It's their God so it must be the one, the True and the Only.
You are part of the huge problem.
Yes jusbkoz, organizations like CAIR.... and Fox News.
Um no we were not founded as a christen country, many of the founding fathers where agnostic. If we were meant to be a christen country then why did the founding fathers make it so that the federal government couldn't put one religion above another.
and be for anyone brings up the "under god" stuff. Under god was not put on our money and in the pledge of allegiance until the cold war, a stupid cold war tactic against an atheist soviet union.
I really wish people like you would take some history and government classes. The First Amendment of the Constitution says "Congress shall make no laws respecting the establishment of religion, OR RESTRICTING THE FREE EXERCISE THEREOF." Congress probably didn't pass a law establishing a religion, nor did they pass a law denying General Boykin his right to exercise his. If the ACLU wasn't an atheist front group, they'd be suing the government over the provision of the GIVE Act that denies members of the Civilian Defense Corps their right to gather for communal worship.
There are other countries to live in. God of abraham be glorified amen amen amen
johsmi
..."He is the only true God and my friend you will meet him whether you believe in him or not"....
Funny, that's what the OTHER guys are saying about THEIR Magic Sky King, too.
Maybe they'll be kind enough to whisper when they're close to your section of Paradise so as not to let on that you're not the only ones there.
For people who claim to be the sole possessors of "facts," you guys sure have an allegience to something which you cannot back up with FACTS.
Prove it.
Have a nice day :)
Ok kids...there are many religions in this world...all of which worship God...but different ones go by different names...the whole concept is basically the same.
Unfortunately, mankind has used God as a means to exert one's beliefs as to what they think how it should be when it comes to how we live...unfortunately, these very same beliefs sometimes become distorted. This is where you get the radicals, whether they be Muslims, Christians, whatever. It seems a lot of people here forget that, and blame ALL people of certain faiths for everything. The Muslims happen to be the resident victims because of 9/11 and the radical dumb@!$%#s that killed so many people that day.
You are all smart people, so it is very confusing sometimes when you have someone who is supposed to be an adult acting more like a 6th grader.
From what everyone has stated in the article, this man is no more than a hate monger...anyone that spreads his type of message is a hate monger.
Some here need to know this and not be so taken in by all that crap. Please don't spout off about how God is good and "I'm s Christian so I am better than you" garbage...no one is better than anyone. Yes, you have every right to worship the way you want, just like I do, and anyone else that doesn't use their religion to hurt others.
The really sad part is, all this talk of being "religious," yet these same people will think nothing of being hateful, and wish ill will to others.
Use your heads...
We were not founded as a Christian nation. The Pilgrims were fleeing persecution, but they were as intolerant as the Roundheads (Cromwell et al). The Plymouth Colony leaders brooked no dissent. They hung dissenters (particularly Quakers) who tried to practice their religion in the colony, or ran them out of the colony (think Roger Williams and the founding of Rhode Island). The colonial leaders who framed the Constitution were explicit that they didn't want a state religion--just read Paine, Jefferson, Franklin, Madison, etc.
In the 1780 census, the states with the largest percentage of adult residents (not counting slaves and Native Americans) who "adhered" to a particular church were South Carolina and New Hampshire, both at 16%. The lowest percentage was North Carolina at 4%.
Although I find military prayer breakfasts a questionable tradition, I wouldn't have a problem with this guy speaking if it weren't for the evangelical Christian proselytizing scandals at the military academies--particularly the Air Force (2005). Their religious zealotry may no longer be overt, but it is still just beneath the surface. I think it is better to err on the side of caution rather than risk a repeat of the past coercion and discrimination.
Funny how Christians who hate Muslims, Muslims who hate Jews, Jews who hate Christians (and any other hate triangle you wanna make) all worship the same God of Abraham and yet spend their time killing each other over semantics. What a waste of thousands of years and millions of lives.
And becsmom, thank you for your accurate retelling of our history! It was a breath of fresh air.
God said to Abraham " Give me a son", Abe said "Man, You must be putting me on."
He should go peddle his ignorant Christian propaganda bull@!$%# elsewhere.
ummm. so you agree that Islam is good, as is sharia law? Maybe your the igorant one....satan.
Ever notice how if someone of the Islam faith speaks (not threatens, only speaks) out about another belief system, they have every right to. But when someone of a the Christian faith speaks (again, not threatens, only speaks) out against another belief system, they are labeled as ignorant, hateful and extremists?
Amen Melody! Christian nations do not sack embassies, put writers and artists under death sentences, and riot in the streets because of some presumed slight to Allah. Islam is the most flagrantlly intolerant major religion on the face of the earth. Its values are totally inconsistent with the values of Christian, democratic societies. When the founders of this nation wrote religious tolerance into our Constitution they were totally unaware of the faith of Islam; had they known otherwise you may be assured they would have excepted Islam specifically from that toleration.
yes , I've noticed , and it's bullsh*t
Oh yeah? How do you spell Westboro Baptist Church? How do you spell congregants spewing their so-called biblically based venom at military funerals? How do you spell abortion clinic bombers or Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols saying that they had God's authority? Don't ever point your little finger at the other when the hate and intolerance lives in your own heart. Looks like you've got it bad, hon.
Satanick- I agree with you. The rest of you christians must of forgot the "old testament"! Some where along the lines the roman empire wanted a nicer more controlling religion. Whaa Laa!!! The "new testament" was created.
@ Jim
I do not believe that any religions are good. Hence my name. I don't want Christian laws or Sharia law or whatever other kind of religious method of control. Separation of Church and State.
@ satirifh
When the founders of this nation wrote religious tolerance into our Constitution they were totally unaware of the faith of Islam; had they known otherwise you may be assured they would have excepted Islam specifically from that toleration.
Did God inform you of this through a prayer session? ;)
"Christians" made death threats over the word, "Xmas."
Have a nice day.
don't forget the Inquisition...the Protestants and Catholics in Ireland...the Salem witch trials...the Native Americans...the slave trade...
Christianity isn't as perfect and as good as some of you may believe..
satirith - The Founding Fathers and Mothers probably unaware of the faith of Islam? Library of Congress paper about the FF's and tolerance:
http://www.loc.gov/loc/lcib/0205/tolerance.html
LOL! The founding fathers didn't know about Islam?! Seriously, what a crock! Who were all those Mohammedans they specifically mentioned as needing protection from the religious tyranny rampant in the colonies and the new states? It is amazing how people will tell lies just to ensure their own beliefs are never put to the test of reality.
@ Texas Pam
There are fringes of every religion...those who believe that they are doing the will of God, yet if they really sought out the Scriptures, they would know that the things they do are wrong. They Westboro church will be held accountable for their actions. But dont lump the entire lot of us Christians in with the likes of them. Thats like saying everyone in certain ethnic groups are all the same just because a percentage of them have decided to live a life of crime. What the Westboro church does is wrong. What McVeigh and Nichols did was wrong. They all bought into an ideology that is wrong and contrary to the true teachins of Scripture. You will never see me blow up buildings, kill abortion doctors, or picket outside someone's funeral out of hate and saying that they deserved it because of someone else's choice. There are those of us who strive to live Godly lives, reach out to others, and walk according the the Scriptures. So, if living my life the best way possible in communion with my Creator and Savior means I got it bad...then Im proud to say I've got it bad.
@ evan miller
The old testament with its laws and judgments where to show how screwed up mankind is. That with all of the laws given to the Jews, that no one would be able to live up to the standard of perfection set forth. The only way to be seen under that umbrella, was to have our sins cleansed. There was the temporary redemption through animal sacrifice, but it was only temporary. It all pointed the way to Christ coming and being the once and for all sacrifice for all mankind. You dont see those types of laws and immediate judgments coming down in the New Testament because after Christ's death, we are living under a period of grace.
This general sounds like a religious nut, and therefore should not speak to the cadets. Its a good thing hes retired.
would you say the same thing about an Islamic "religious nut"???
Yeah! Any "nut"! Religious or not.
Religious nut...too often that's a redundant phrase these days.
Ok.... so we gather up all the nuts and make em go live somewhere next to a toxic waste dump.
Housing values will plummet.
I've seen it
And it wasn't pretty.
Another reason to disband the military immediately.
and do what, invite al-queda leaders into the U.S. for a beer?
you must be a consciencious objector
The opinion of one retired general = disband the military immediately. Really MR392541? If we use your logic, then all the following should hold true as well, right?
One car wreck = no more driving cars.
One death during a surgical procedure = no more surgery.
One plane crash = no more planes.
One peanut allergy attack = no more nuts.
etc., etc., etc.
Your an idiot, disband the military, how the heck do you think you got the right to live here and complain about everything, you must be an Islamic radical, wanting to take America down because we have freedoms you don't. Get real people they have already allowed Sharia law in the US, they are fighting for it right now, in New York and California. I don't agree with everything that general said, but America you better wake up, in about 10 to 15 years, it won't be America anymore, if we don't defend all rights to include Christian beliefs.
Seems to be exactly the direction lots of people in this country want to take us!
whatta idiot post!
Please,...don't encourage the dumb azz!
americawakeup\\- I live in Southern California. I have never seen or heard of anyplace where some =one was trying to implement shariah law. But I do know of schools trying to get my kids to read a bible. If thats not christian law. I dont know what is?

Boy you've been asleep...
They are strongly trying. Google it for yourself. I'll give you a hint for the first one... try the state of Michigan.
Have fun!
Carl.
You are "strongly" wrong.
Stop believing the fantastic claims of twisted TeaParty Politicians and blowheart radio personalities.
Find a new "News" source.
Have nice day :)
MR...you make NO sense...
He's right. I got that mailer too in the Thrifty Shopper Coupon envelope.
They couldn't put it in print if it wasn't true.
Carl--I live in Michigan, and I can assure you that there is no attempt to adopt sharia law in this state. I live next door to the two Detroit suburbs with the largest number of residents of Middle Eastern descent. With very few exceptions, they have no desire to overturn America's civil laws. Their laws are ecclesiastical, not civil, and they know that when there is a conflict between the two, civil law wins. The only difference you see between the run-of-the-mill American teen and the local Islamic teen is the headscarves the girls wear. They listen to the same music, have the same cell phones, and otherwise act like typical American teens. The residents of these cities are at the 4th of July celebrations waving flags, and cheering the Scouts, the veterans, and their own floats.
They are Americans...just like the other ethnic groups that moved here, were vilified, and eventually became woven into the fabric of our society--think Irish, Germans, Italians, Jews, Chinese, Japanese, Greeks, Poles, Russians, etc. All of those groups were distrusted and discriminated against...and then assimilated. Now it's Hispanics and Middle Eastern/Islamic immigrants...and if you try to take away my salsa, hummus, or falafel, you'll have a fight on your hands.
Sounds like he is articulating the official US army position which matches their actions over the last decade and their plans for the next.
Yep and proud of it. Infidel til I die!!!
the truth is the truth.....can not ignore it.
God put Cheetah in the White House? I suppose Lt. Gen Boykiller has that in writing somewhere that we can check up on? He might know bayonets and hand grenades, but he ought leave religion to people with a conscience.
he stated the obvious!! That radical islam is our greatest threat!!
I for one value his "opinion",, He retired with a lot of in sight in our nations threat!! He should know!! No where do I see where he said he hated nor had any feelings mentioned toward muslims??
Ah Fred, its the general's conscience that has gotten him in hot water with all the whining liberals. We would expect the CAIR to be in opposition, but who is in this fringe veterans organization?
What, "fringe" organizations? Seriously, it would have taken you two seconds to just look them up yourself, Satirifh. Or are you too complacent taking up the "whining" mantle?

Carl- I don't know if you live in California. If you don't? Don't comment on politics in a stae you know nothing about.
So a Lt. General who has spent his entire career fighting for his country, defending the Constitution and 1st Amendment Freedom of Speech is to be denied those very same freedoms once he is retired? This should offend every freedom loving American, but of course political correctness will likely prevail and his free speech squashed.
exactly and amen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not at all. You misunderstand the premise of free speech. It means that LAWS cannot be made that infringes upon free speech. (Although even that is not entirely true, as there are laws against saying SOME things -- i.e. one cannot threaten the president.)
No one is stopping this man from standing on the street corner and shouting to the winds ... but organizations, employers, etc. are entitled to "limit" what can be said when on their premises or in their employ.
(See Fred Phelps & crew for the perfect example.)
West Point is a university and as such offers a fair amount of diversity to include inviting those of a variety of backgrounds and views. These young men and women are among the brightest in this nation - they are literally selected from a pool of over 55,000 applicants each year. These young men and women are extremely capable of forming their own opinions on any variety of topics from any speaker. I give them more credit then I give most of these hypocrites in here that believe Freedom of Speech is limited to those only sharing your own warped positions
You are correct, to some degree. In this case, we have a government institution, West Point, contemplating limiting the free speech of a retired general because a bunch of lefties are upset with things he has said. But, frankly, thanks to this idiotic attempt on the part of these very same lefties who want to limit his free speech, we now know far more about his views than we otherwise would have ever learned. Now, instead of giving a speech to fellow patriots at West Point he has been given a far bigger platform to discuss his views, so, in the end, free speech does prevail and the left is made to look as loony as ever. My 1st Amendment opinion.
Hooray for Lt. Gen William G. Boykin. He told the truth. The Islamics and the PC police and libtards just can't stand to see any criticism of Islam. Hey y'know what? F**k Islam.
Of course he has freedom of speech. The issue is this: there are many American-born Muslims serving in the armed services. Is it really appropriate for someone to demonize people who have VOLUNTEERED to risk their lives to protect THEIR country? This is what it's all about, and it's what is being overlooked in most of the posts here.
GetOverYourself..
Claiming that The Great Pumpkin will one day rise is "free speech," too.
Friggin' hilarious.
Honestly, do you people ever notice how you only want to use the "free speech" defense when it's used to be intolerant, bigoted and oppressive?
Man, oh man.
Have a nice day.
You know, just because you have freedom of speech doesn't mean you should abuse it.
Look at that church that pickets funerals of soldiers, spewing their hatred of homosexuals. NO parent should have to hear that when they are burying their child. They use their freedom of speech to spread their hate...same thing happened when the Nazi party wanted to have a rally in a predominantly Jewish neighborhood in Illinois several years ago. They got to do what they wanted.
Pathetic.
If you yell "fire" in a crowded theater, you can causea problem.
Isn't that a way of exercising your freedom of speech?
Just because you can doesn't mean you should.
He can yap up his distored lies, just not at an educational institution.
NOT true. Only selected opinions are allowed to be aired. And your rant is in itself tinged with untruth and hypocrisy.
When along with the KKK they also include the Communist Party, the Nazi Party, Eugenics, Atheists, Nihilists, Pagans and Witches, and others in these gatherings and speeches, then we can truthfully say that there is freedom of speech...and exposure to a variety of opinions is possible, honestly intended and being made in earnest.
Till then it is same old, same old brainwashing - lies, deceit and hypocrisy!
I've got a great solution- if all you fine people don't want him as the speaker, and he's going to speak anyway, then don't go. Problem solved.
Ron- in the military, those types of appearances are mandatory.
Ron, so the Muslims in the service shouldn't attend because this man wants to spew his hatred? I don't think that's the answer.
" trying to implement Shariah Law"
What rock have you been living under?..............They are !
Trying to implement Shariah Law. Hello ED-3553337?
If any shariah law is implemented then I guarantee you it will be fought down by our much derided civil liberties constitutional atheists!
I annoyingly see them fighting every single Christian prayer meeting during school and they are relentless.
They do not ever give up. So what makes you think anything like Shariah stands a chance in their arena?
I never thought I would say this but: "God bless the Civil Liberties Union"....the next Shariah obstructionists of America!
That is as daft a claim as saying that Jews want to implement Halachic law in the US. It seems that every 25 years or so America has to have a new enemy, or the people aren't happy. I recommend instead reading a good, scary thriller.
OKLAHOMA CITY – An amendment that would ban Oklahoma courts from considering international or Islamic law discriminates against religions and a Muslim community leader has the right to challenge its constitutionality, a federal appeals court said Tuesday.
The court in Denver upheld U.S. District Judge Vicki Miles-LaGrange's order blocking implementation of the amendment shortly after it was approved by 70 percent of Oklahoma voters in November 2010.
Muneer Awad, the executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations in Oklahoma, sued to block the law from taking effect, arguing that the Save Our State Amendment violated his First Amendment rights.
Try paying just a little attention to what is going on: PLEASE
I could give a rats @$$ about Islam, or what they want to complain about- I hope they are all offended to the point they all strap some explosives to themselves and blow themselves up in their own houses and neighborhoods. How's that for "Political Correctness."
Excellent!!!
Jim will be following this post with an emphatic insistence that I grant him a little political correctness....
Racist.
Bigot.
Christian Taliban.
Have a nice day.
the truth hurts
He speaks the truth; today it is not cool to say what is true. We are becoming a soulless country. God save us all.
Justice100.
..."he speaks the truth"....
Dammit! I forgot to buy Happy Opposite Day flowers for my conservative friend again.
Have a nice day :)
"God, save me from your followers."
There is no such thing as a radical Muslim. Their religion states to convert, enslave or kill any and all who oppose their religion. If they are not following those, might i add, strict rules of Islam, then they are not true muslims
Were you living under a rock on 9/11/2001????
I'm technically saying that ALL Muslims are radicals. Their entire religion is based on enslavement, oppression and murder. Those who say that they are Muslim but don't believe that aren't Muslim, or they are and they are doing another thing that the Qur'an says to do which is lie, if need be, to reach the final objective.
The majority of Muslims have no dreams of world conquest for Allah, any more than most Western Christians are interested in a worldwide Crusade to conquer all non-Christian territory. However, many reputable figures say that at minimum ten per cent of Muslims are radicalized, meaning that (depending on whose figures one chooses to believe) we in the West nonetheless face between 120,000,000 and 160,000,000 avowed enemies.
Precisely. The non- violent "Muslims" are technically a branch off religion of their own if they aren't following the Qur'ans new testament the way it was intended
Nothing like a few invasions and Preditor Drones to radicalize people, eh?
Know who ELSE was "radicalized?"
Sitting Bull.
Geronimo.
You get the picture...
Have a nice day..
anonymous...then why must you go on and on about how all Muslims are bad?
shut...please don't compare these warriors to radical Muslims. These men fought for their own people because they were being taken over and pushed out of their own lands...self-defense.
Annonymous175..
Is "breathing" bogus declaritives something they teach at Conservative U?
I guess you know more about Islam than those that practice it, right?
Or is it just your illusory superiority that tells you that you're some kind of authority on it, despite what devout Muslims say?
Give it a rest.
No one except your ilk is buying your nonsense, so you might as well just save it for the klan rally.
Have a nice day.
Darn shame that those who serve in the military have somehow been given fewer rights than the lazy bast---ds that criticize them. I guess the first amendment doesn't apply to you if you are a Christian... only if you're a Muslim or a follower of Satan... or a journalist...
You have to remember what "extremist liberal" news page you are on......
lancepilot, you are correct sir!
William Winchester. Outstanding Commentary!!!!!
He has the right to his views , and I agree with the part about the muslims, BUT I do understand that maybe at that venue is not the proper place to spout them! But to not allow him to speak is ridiculous. I am a Independent and proud of it for I would NEVER align myself with the current republican party nor for that matter half of the current Democrats either! Seperation of Church and state should begin at that the voters booth! and continue through all walks of the government!
William Winchester, did you read the article? There are Muslims, American-born Muslims, serving in the military. Is it really appropriate for this man to demonize them and their religion in there presence? Again, there is no draft. These people have volunteered to risk their lives to serve their county, to protect bigots like you. Please think before you paint an entire people and religion with the same brush! Your generalization is absurd and uninformed.
Right, Sarasotan, patriotic volunteers like Major Nidal Malik Hasan, risking their lives to serve their country. Too bad you weren't there at Fort Hood to get "protected."
Cincinnatti Rick.
Too bad you weren't with Sargent Tillman in Iraq to get "protected."
C'mon...Think about it...you can do it...
BINGO! You got it.
Have a nice day :)
It is just as appropriate for Lt Gen William G. Boycan to address the cadets at West Point -- as it would be for U.S. Army Major Nidal Malik Hasan (proudly serving at Fort Hood, Texas) An extremist is an extremist....jcg
So true, Cincinntti...they're all alike, huh?
Bigot
jimmy G-3011472...you can find a way to compare the two? Hasan is a worthless piece of crap leg...never jumped, couldn't, wouldn't, shouldn't jump chunk of slime. Hasan is a leg...nothing more, just a waste of skin taking up oxygen.
So you don't like him, right?
shut yer yap: Cincinnatti Rick.
Too bad you weren't with Sargent Tillman in Iraq to get "protected."
-------------------------------------
Takes a real dirtbag to mention Tillman and Hassan in the same breath. Tillman didn't willfully execute 13 of his fellow soldiers.
I think he just said outloud what a lot of people think......
LTG(R) Boykin has earned the right to speak to anyone or group that invites him. He has earned two
Purple Hearts,Ranger tab,Special Forces tab,The Combat Infantryman'sBadge,and Senior Parachutist's
Badge. He is a warrior;not a WHINER!! He has been places and done things that you civilian weiners
can only fantasize about doing. GET OVER IT!!!
If he did win all of these, then he has a responsibility to uphold those honors.
Being a hateful bigot is NOT the way to do it.
Shame on LT General (R) Boykin and shame on West Point for letting this hate monger speak at an official function. He's a disgrace to the uniform.
Would you be saying that if he was Muslim and speaking out against Christians???
let me get this straight!! You have the freedom of speech to come on here and voice your opinion??(which his service help you to maintain),, but he cant voice his?? smh!! why?? because he speaks the truth!! He is not being racist!! He does not hate them,, he merely stated they are our threat!! You dont agree?? You must be married to someone in another army than which I serve!!
How would you like to live their radical way?? No schooling,, no internet,, completely covered at all times,, your clitoris removed,, (yes,, they do that!!),, etc etc etc,,
talk about disgracing th uniform!! Your hubby must be real proud to be providing for you and the threat he might have to go to war in order for you to voice such an uninformed opinion that he just bleeds camo!!
FFS!! :-S
Realize that it is one thing to say it here, and another one altogether to say it at an official U.S. govt. function at West Point. Even though I see the reason to his viewpoint, I'm very surprised that he was invited and I imagine that who ever did so has probably just committed career suicide, so I hope that they were prepared for this and think that it was worth it.
-If he spoke about any religion in this matter I most definitely feel the same way.
- as an officer his right to free speech is limited, especially under the color of uniform, check out the Uniform Code of Military Justice. My husband and our family serve proudly, he has deployed down range multiple times. A military prayer breakfast is supposed to bring soldiers of all faiths together not promote hate and narrow mindedness and bigotry. You are the one who is sorely uninformed.
I have the right to say what I want to say, but I'm not so bigoted and selfish AND hateful to say things that spread more hate.
It's one hing to have an opinion, but it's another thing to act like a freakin' junior high schooler who stands out on the playground to scream at that chick I couldn't stand, then go inside and tell everyone i know what a bitch she is...whether it's true or not.
Some of you need to learn the difference...
