This dead sea lion with bullet wounds was found on a West Seattle beach on Jan. 23.
A group best known for fighting off whalers has joined federal investigators looking into the recent killings of sea lions near Seattle, offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever is responsible.
Another sea lion was found dead over the weekend, adding to seven others found in recent weeks with bullet wounds. A harbor seal was also found dead.
Federal officials planned to examine the latest sea lion on Tuesday to determine if it, too, had been shot.
The latest sea lion found was on the Nisqually River, south of Seattle, as were six of the other sea lions.

Officials examine a dead sea lion found on a Seattle park beach on Jan. 23.
"This is a violation of U.S. federal law and the person or persons responsible for these shootings must be apprehended and brought to justice," Paul Watson, founder of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, said in announcing the reward late Monday.
Watson, who is on a Sea Shepherd ship off Antarctica pursing Japanese whaling ships, noted that his group has offered rewards in the past, including one that led to the arrest of a man convicted of killing 22 seals in New Zealand.
The suspicion has been that sea lions in the Seattle area's Puget Sound are being targeted because they devour salmon, thus reducing what's available for fishermen.
"Sadly, shootings occur annually in the Pacific Northest, particularly in fall and winter when large numbers of sea lions move into our area in search of food," Seal Sitters, a group that responds to marine mammal strandings in the Seattle area, noted in its blog.
Sea lions are certainly feeding this winter, including the Nisqually, where a state wildlife biologist recently took photos of a large congregation. "This is the most sea lions I have ever seen at once in south sound," Pete Topping told the Seattle Times of the Dec. 24 sighting.

Chris Phinney
Dozens of sea lions were spotted on Dec. 24, 2011, on an anchored barge in the Nisqually Delta by Pete Topping, a Washington state wildlife biologist.
Firecrackers and even rubber bullets have been used by officials to try to scare off sea lions but to little avail. Some known to be California sea lions that migrated north have been captured and trucked back. Those that end up returning and are spotted are killed.
Anyone with information was urged to contact the federal investigation hotline at 800-853-1964. "The information can be provided in confidence and the source can remain confidential," Sea Shepherd said in a statement.
Penalties could range from fines to jail time. One of the animals killed was a Stellar sea lion, a species protected under the federal Endangered Species Act.

I'd kill a sea lion if he tried to eat my salmon too. One time I punched a goat for trying to eat my carrot.
somene needs to track you down via your ip address and have you arrested for animal cruelty. punching a goat...really pathetic.
...seems a little 'gruff' to a billy goat...
Sick and tired and in disbelief of how cruel humans are and always have been to animals. Whatever happened to having compassion for all God's creatures? I certainly hope he has compassion for animal abusers when they are begging for his mercy (you know, the same mercy they didn't show the animals).
reply to funky one-you are a real a**hole. Buy your salmon canned like everyone else does. I hope your mistreated goat kicked you right in the nuts.
While sea lions are a protected species, if there get to be too many of them and they start overpopulating and becoming threats to the salmon species, federal law allows killing of them under certain circumstances. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052702304066504576339311088801864.html
The issue here is what impact they are having on the salmon species. If, as the article states they are seeing the most sea lions ever in this area, then they need to thin the herd. Legally of course, not illegally like some bozo is doing. Deer are overrunning America yet animal rights activists won't allow increased hunting to keep their population under control (who tear up farmland and home vegetable growers and as we all know possess a threat to lives of drivers on highways).
We as humans DO have a right to control out of control animal populations. You animal rights activists can go pound sand.
Can you people really not read sarcasm? Holy christ...pull out the sticks and have a sense of humor. Not everyone is appalled at everything someone says.
Too late Harry, I already called the Internet Police.
What a stupid and worthless post.
looks like a job for seal team six...ya'll keep an eye out for'em...
Jhawke, humans may have a responsibility to control animal populations for our needs and purposes, but to say it's our RIGHT to do so is dangerous and wrong. What gives us that right? If an intellectually or technologically superior race of aliens decided humans have gotten too populous on Earth, does that give them the right to keep OUR numbers down? This is, in fact, how some justify genocide.
Hopefully in a parallel universe somewhere, there is an oversized goat ass raping this guy!
Now that was funny!
Jhawke
"We as humans DO have a right to control out of control animal populations."
More than a right, as THE top-tier predator in North America, we have a responsibility. Had we not removed all the other predators (black and grizzly bears, wolves, mountain lions, and coyotes) game animal populations would be somewhat self-controlling. As it stands, the balance is off, and human predation must be used to cull overbreeding populations.
The animal "rights" people confuse hunting with cruelty. Starvation in cruel. Without hunting, starvation is the tool Nature uses to restore balance.
Hey Killer - we're the top of the food chain. Deal with it. And please stay on topic and don't spin off into some idiotic diatribe about aliens. I don't exactly see aliens sharing our resources like animals and humans - the ENTIRE reason why we NEED and have a RIGHT to control out of control animal populations. And like I said, if these animals start affecting OUR lifestyles, then we should and WILL do something about it. Sheesh. Hope you don't have a loved one killed by a deer that smashes into their car one day due to overpopulation of deer. What the hell is wrong with you people?
@ Funky One, Lmao! At one time I lived at an apartment complex that had 2 ponds & both had ducks & swans that lived there. One afternoon I was feeding all of them crackers & this one big male swan jumped on shore & started to attack me. I slapped the $hit out of that bird! He went right back into the water & 10 minutes later we were best friends. From that point on even if I didn't have any crackers he would still just come & chill with me at the waters edge! Never in a million years did I ever think I would slap a swan! LMAO, But hey the bird didn't mind, He got lots of crackers & hotdogs for two years!.... Get a sense of humor folks!

Well JHawke the way humans 'control' things in this world we will all soon be eating each other from lack of remaining species and tillable soil. The imbalance exists because WE made it so through thoughtless and careless "control". Now when some humans are trying to rebuild mother natures control methods you have rampant human drama going on to oppose it. Those who hunt don't need the food and those who need the food can't afford to hunt. And besides the article is about illegal killing of animals anyway, that is not control, that is someone taking matters into their own hands OR worse just joy killing for "sport" or pleasure reasons.
irrert, please mind rule # 1 of the Code of Honor in the future.
or on you. they are endangered while you are not.
Hey killer. Karma @!$%#. If you think like you speak, you're in deep sh** and well deserved.
Maybe the swamp people went north for some easy pickings. got to pay for teeth any way they can!
There is only one of me. How many sealions are there.
Watson is finally doing something legal and not denying people to make an honest living.
We can take care of that...i `m good with riffle....no pain,,i promise
There are more stupid humans than sealions.....I guess it time to see how you would like the same treatment...If people would put there selves in the place of those they abuse maybe they might realize just how wrong they are.
No animal should be shot just trying to eat it's natural food source. I agree with many of the posts speaking of overfishing the available resources. Also, PHILDUC, I'm good with a rifle too, unfortunately, I'd go to jail for killing a moron like you. Also, people, learn to use spellcheck!! Please.
Killer, only one of you? Thank goodness for that but sadly there are plenty who think like you and I'm not sure we need any of you when killing is your solution, so much so that you would, even as a joke, use it as your handle on here. Sad. Tell you what, you take on the sealions el natural, one on one and if you win I'll call it fair and legal. I'll be betting and rooting for the sealion.
"There is only one of me. How many sealions are there."
last time i checked there are over 7 billion people on this planet
Whoever is doing this needs to be prosecuted for violation of hunting laws in addition to animal cruelty. Personally, I'd add being horse-whipped for wasting good meat and giving real hunters a bad name to that.
Controlled hunts for sea lions (which are not threatened or endangered, by the way) could be an answer. The key word is CONTROLLED, meaning that a certain number of permits are issued for hunters based upon population counts and available food resources weighed against total human and natural predator needs. Allowing subsistance hunting of seals could also help, as various Native America nations along the West Coast traditionally incorporated upon seals as part of their food sources and I'm sure no one would begrudge the local tribes for harvesting as needed.
The best hunters and most efficient of seals are killer whales, which are also a good tourist draw. Encouraging a pod or two of them to the area might help out a great deal.
KILLER SAID:
General Response: Maybe there is one too many of you!!
It is very unfortunate that these animals have overpopulated this county. And they have the "right to bear arms" to defend themselves?
tigerlover
What are you, some kind of chick? All I purposed was a controlled hunt on some over populated sea-lions. Just like many states do with mountain-lions.
Maybe the salmon did it.
California Sea Lions are NOT an endangered species. Their normal range is from the Alaska panhandle to Southern Mexico. Because of protections placed on them, their populations have skyrocketed in the last 40 years. In the late 80's, they started congregating on the boat docks of Pier 39 in San Francisco Bay, causing quite a nuisance. After about 20 years of this, they moved on. Just a little background and FACTS for this discussion.......
To bad they can't have a reward like that for humans???
Obviously, the individual[s] doing this is unaware, he is killing a strand in the web of human existence. The seal is biological diversity, in the eco-nomy of all life. Like all biological diversity, the seal has a job to perform for planet Earth and the Earth's life creating and sustaining, cycles and functions or Earth's ecosystems.
The father of ecology stated, a thing is right when it preserves and saves the integrity, stability and the beauty of the biotic community. It is wrong otherwise. The seal is a community member of the biotic community.
to who ever is shooting those seals and sea lions, id like to shake your hand, keep on shootin, just dont get caught, kill as many as you can.
Just like over populated deer something must be done. It is more humane to kill them than have them starving and wreaking havoc on the salmon population. Native Americans understood this problem and you can't let one population over-take another. It must be done properly though. no slaughtering or over-kill.
Thank you Skor. I am much dumber for reading that. You must live on just air full of funny smoke.
skor154, put the crack pipe down go get some food in ya then get a couple weeks of sleep.
Okay...
I applaud the effort... The Sealion biggest problem is they are far too much like humans... they learn quickly, they can teach others in their clan, they are extremely protective of their own... and they kill for no reason other than the fun of it!!!
And like a lot of humans I know of, they serve their best purpose by becoming fertilizer!
I love it people like to protect everything. Shoot some of those things people need some stress relief.
without a gun you are not the top of the food chain maybe not even the middle for most people
Floyd you think its ok to let the japanese MURDER the very few whales that are still alive? and you call that an "honest living." How would you feel if you were one of those seals? YOU WOULDN'T FEEL ANYTING CAUSE YOU WOULD BE DEAD! GO SEA SHEPARD! go tigerlover and all the rest of the people who disagree with MURDERING INNOCENT ANIMALS! and SCREW all the people who think its ok to MURDER INNOCENT ANIMALS ESPECIALLY KILLER!
I wonder how many commentators on this site live on the Pacific Coast? I lived in Astoria Oregon for a time, and sea lions literally clog the boat docks, making them unusable for anyone. You can't just push past them, they are big, mean animals, and will chase and bite you. It would not hurt to list the California Sea Lion as a nuisance animal, if it is in certain areas. The problem, of course, is that lots of folks can't tell the difference between a Stellar and a California. Probably should have a visual identification test, issue permits for x number animals for those that pass and are willing to kill a few. Not sure how the meat is, but orcas do eat them (about the only predator they have).
personally people that kill animals the are engendered should be put on display publicly and have stones thrown at them among other things of torture done to them. If it was me I would tie the person up and decapitate that with a katana blade. A eye for a eye were I stand. I hate people that say well there is two many of this animals there should be a hunting season for them. Yea well there should be a hunting season on humans to. There are more humans on this planet then animals and this planet can not hold this many people. People that say that crap should be the first to go in my book. But to me more and more see it. It is a white man thing. One thing I hate more is white man. They destroy everything they get there grubby hands on. This country will always belong to the Native Americans. At least we respect both of mothers. Mother earth and mother nature. What is all of your excuses. Enough said! Find this bastard and end him or her. Eye for a eye Enough said!
killer158blablabla - I have a very strong feeling that you have chosen your nickname to try to "cover" for your many inadequacies. By chosing that "handle" you are well on your way to becoming a legend in your own mind. The statement was made before and to help you remember it, I will restate it - there is definitely one too many of you. I hope you encounter a very near sighted sea lion with a cold (so he can't smell you) who decides he wants you to be the mother of his next child.
These Sea-lions/ California sea lions need to be thinned. The do-goobers in California have created a mess with protecting them. Case in point is the children’s beach in La Jolla Ca. Developed for kids to go to the beach and see the tide pools. Now it is covered with sea-lions and the state has closed the beach and posted a guard on the beach area to protect them from people/ kids. Go see the site if you can stand the smell of the sea -lion excrement. Thanks shooter... go killer Dr Pat51 is just Jealous. Question to Darkestangle; did your massa beat you to much in a Another life, "It is a white man thang" give me a break you Obama voter...
As far as I'm concerned this isn't exactly in california. Its in oregone last time i checked.
@gcarlisle - it's intriguing that you are so upset about the sea lions taking over your "children's beach" in California. Does that mean that you have to drive farther to observe another "children's beach"?
Just another species trying to survive on what's left of natures resources. Not their fault they are adapting and risking (and losing) their lives for it.
The suspicion has been that sea lions in the Seattle area's Puget Sound are being targeted because they devour salmon, thus reducing what's available for fishermen.....
are they supposed to start a garden or shop at the grocery, what about raising cattle?? i think the sentence should read the dams have caused the salmon population to crash., the feds allocate too may salmon to fishermen and the por sea lions have nothing left to eat because we have over-fished and left marine creatures to starve.
I also thought the "devour" salmon comment was inflammatory and misleading when you consider how we humans devour salmon.
Any salmon taken in Puget Sound should probably be thrown back, or given to the sea lions. It's pretty funky water in places.
Here in Oregon any way you cant keep native wild salmon, only planters which are coming home to die/get killed and turned into cat food except for the lucky few that get stripped of their eggs and milt for propogation. So actually we are improoving the salmon count that we had previously dessimated by setting the locals free to spawn where they are supposed to.
The wording in the Seattle Times was equally inflammatory, the heading saying "Big Groups of Sea Lions Invade Puget Sound." It is really stupid to give citizens the wrong idea that these animals limit or reduce salmon populations. It only occurs in highly modified environments where salmon face a human-imposed bottleneck. The other scapegoats are the Indians, who have every right to exercise the treaty rights they exchanged for what was their land in the 1800s. Most salmon populations are limited by conditions in freshwater where the juveniles are extremely vulnerable to habitat loss and degradation for the period of time in which they are rearing there. It's too bad so many rednecks interpret such articles as a reason to begin slaughtering sea lions. Want to look at the primary enemy of salmon? Look in the dang mirror. The media has a responsibility to educate rather than inflame prejudice and misunderstandings.
There is room for ALL of God's creatures.... right next to the mashed potatoes!...
Well said irrert.
As usual it's the non-thinking simple-minded humans like killer-whatever who have caused these problems by having no respect for any living being.
I hate salmon !!
Greedy fisherman with their huge million dollar boats and humongous nets - I say f them - A $10,000 reward is not enough. Take their boats and property if they are caught and sell them for Sea Lion protection.
Santa Cruise is Sea Lion haven - you got to love our wild creatures. They are better than most fisherman that I have met.
Totally agree. Not only are we over fishing, WE damaged the salmon's ability to spawn properly and recover their numbers. Then the small minded among us have the nerve to blame other animals, like bears and seals, for their dependance on the same resources.
Takes a "real man" to shoot a seal, whether from a boat, a bridge, or the shoreline. The equivalent of walking up on and shooting a dairy cow in a field. Gutless wonders they are. Total cowards.
Sea lions are a huge problem in this case. They eat tens of thousands every season. The damage the sea lions cause is not insignificant But, I do agree with you, those doing the killing of these sea lions are cowards.
You are so correct, Irrert. Dams have been the undoing of salmon and a long list of fish! It's merely expedient to blame a strand in the web of all life, like the seal, merely doing his job for planet Earth. Now, we're talking oxygen, fresh water, food and life, all the reasons man breathes. Dams have caused extinctions of fish. Remember the famous snail darter that fell extinct for a dam?
I can tell you don't live where you see the problems. If you did, you would know the sea lion population is way out of control. They are running up freshwater rivers not in their natural habitat. There is more than enough salmon in the Columbia here to feed them and fisherman. That is not the problem. It is ignornant enviromenatlist from the cities that are tauhgt by other liberal city dwellers. I saw a beach on the Oregon Coast last summer withan estimated 10,000 sea lions on it. They were fighting one another for a place to lay in the sun. Live here awhile instead and see first hand instead of spouting off what you have been only told.
Gee, I have an idea, lets just kill off everything thats gets in OUR way, god knows we haven't taken over enough land or enough from the ocean, we expect to live our lives by our rules, greedy people, who are we to say that this planet for just us? We complain about how a problem they are here or there, but what about the animals we have shoved out of there homes, land and sea?
People are given dominion over the earth......period. And darwin himself would agree. To bad you hate yourself and other humans so much........this is a disturbing thing to see. it would be different if the animals were being used for food, but someone is killing for killing sake. it's ok to be upset, but don't go knocking the human race for existing..............
You know nothing about me or who I hate, what is disturbing to see is people like you thinking you have the right to do what you want because you are human, instead of doing what is right because you are human.
Seattle what is the reward for the 2 year old child named SKY????
Funny they make a big deal about killing a few sea lions that where eating the fish so the native Indians would starve,
But a 2 year old goes missing and SEATTLE DOESN'T CARE!
The type of person that does this is typically a coward - to try and justify this sort of behaviour by comparing it to some other tragedy is an age old attempt to mitigate this incident. Haul their sorry ass' before the courts - I'm convinced they will be caught.
The reward money is being offered by an environmental organization, not from the people of Seattle. I get your drift though.
I wish i could flag your comment for being stupid
I'm pretty sure the local tribes would be glad to hunt some seals to make up for the lost fish, AKRandy. We Native folks are pretty adaptable that way.
Oh, I see, so you don't give a damn about either sea lions OR Indians. These types of "comparison" comments are always ridiculous and always from idiotic conservatives. If you care so much about the child, then go freakin' look for him instead of badmouthing people who care about something you know nothing about.
Allison, the only other entity that receives as much abuse as sea lions for depleting salmon populations are Indians, and it is people like AKRandy who pile it on. Neither are the problem and killing sea lions does absolutely nothing to help salmon, just the same as if banning Indian fishing would. The Steller sea lions themselves are listed as a federally endangered species due to incredibly steep population declines "The Western [population] declined by 75% between 1976 and 1990, and decreased another 40% between 1991 and 2000 (the average annual decline during this period was 5.4%)." Maybe some folks need to learn something about sea lions since the media will not educate anyone. Here:
Oh, please! You are comparing apples and oranges.
How much money have you offered for a reward? Have you started a fund? I have found that people who do these kinds of assinine comparisons do NOTHING themselves to help anything or anyone. They just like to complain about what SHOULD be done, purely on their terms.
AKRandy, the sensitive, caring, ethical and decent human being does all the caring, whether it is for a missing baby or the slaughter of a strand in the web of all life. I would hope, a caring adult would wish for a safe, life supporting planet and oxygen, fresh water, food and safety from disease pathogens and epidemics for children, brought to you by biological diversity, just like seals.
The National Academy of Sciences compares extinction of biological diversity, just like the seal, about as safe for children as thermonuclear war because all biological diversity creates Earth's ecosystems, every and all reasons man breathes.
Now we're discussing mankind and children's oxygen, the integrity of the atmosphere, a safe climate, protection from diseases. fresh water, the nitrogen cycle and the circulation of vital nutrients, the entirety of the Earth's biogeochemistry and the very life zone of the Earth, Earth's biosphere/ecosphere or life.
We can care about many things, but even the most stupid of birds doesn't kill his only nest, and seals are a strand in man's only nest or a rivet in man's only spaceship, named Earth.
hey genius...the mother lies about running out of gas and says she left her son in the car while she walked to get gas. The police said her car started instantly, had gas no mechanical issues. The police have called her story a lie...do you just read the headlines? If the mother had something to do with the disappearance I don't see ANYONE posting a reward...why because the mother knows what happened to him!
It's not politically correct to waste resources on a human child.
Aww jeez Randy, well that makes it ok!!
The person or persons who have commiytted this offence are typically cowards. Attempting to mitigate this incident by comparing to other tragedies is unfortunately not the way to go - all violent acts need to be treated with equal weight. Violence is violence - period !!
THIS IS SO SAD...
JUST BROKE MY HEART :(
It's fishermen; it's always fishermen. Once the species was endangered but has now become pretty much a pest. Still, there's no reason for this kind of cruelty.
Some pathetic loser who has to prove his manhood in one way, because he is missing it in another.....
I was pretty shocked about the California Sea Lions migrating north, where they truck them back, and if they show up again they kill them. Wow, pretty extreme for an animal following it's nose to the food.
It does seem strange how the article goes from looking for the person that killed the sea lions, to killing the ones that someone else has decided do not belong there.
There really is not much difference between the two.
If someone can legally kill one group, that is no different than killing the other ones.
Just another fine example of man trying to control a species. And not really having a clue.
It would be best to just leave them alone and let them migrate wherever they want to go.
Freedom such a scarce thing these days..............sad
Freedom? What do you mean? Freedom to overpopulate the planet and over-fish the seas. Now that 90% of large-size fish stocks are extinct and the oceans are decimated some fishermen think they're still owed a living.
There are 7 billion humans on the planet now. Humans outnumber rats now. That's right, humans outnumber vermin. We infest the planet like a disease and our population increases by the minute.
Freedom to rape the natural resources of the planet for personal gain is over. You bet.
I was talking about freedom for wildlife.............................like the sealion right to be where it needs to be... Your making a problem where there isn't one. Make any statement you want but if you don't understand what someones saying don't rant
So sad to read this story, and how rude the comments about shooting a sea lion if they ate your salmon! Disgraceful and shame on you! Unfortunately with the global warming and all the weird things going on in this planet sea animals are so disoriented all they want is to survive, but do they deserve to be shot at because some fisherman on a shooting spree doesn't want them around? We are supposed to co-exist in this world, not shot at each other! Yes, I speak for the animals land or sea! Let's not forget the Maker will be the one to judge you when it is your turn! You need to watch the movie "Powder" and see how that sinks in! Nothing but a bunch of idiots!
Funny how so many people care about ugly creatures. What benefits will they bring to you?
Everything. You just don't really know it until they are gone.
So by your very logic we should do away with you because of your ugliness and lack of benefits to us?
Good point. What benefit to do contribute to the world?
I bet if given the opportunity we could find some reason to doubt your worth? Maybe your ugly? Your personality sure is.
Ugly creatures?!?! I'd love to see your pic, Battleon. How pretty are you? There is an incredibly delicate balance of life that has taken a half-billion years of evolution to achieve. All you science-phobes out there should take a class or two and learn about our natural world. There is an article out there called "Little Things That Rule the World." READ IT! If Homo sapiens disappeared tomorrow, Mother Earth would reclaim all our "advances" in a couple years. But, if microbes, decomposers, disappeared, we'd be up to our eyeballs in rotting flesh in no time. Every creature matters, every individual has a role to play, every creature makes a difference. What you science-illiterates don't understand is that WE DON'T EXIST IN A VACUUM! Without all these other animals/plants/fungi/eukaryotes/prokaryotes, LIFE CAN'T CONTINUE! I would offer that you read Fritjof Capra's Web of Life, but I read that in my Master's Degree program, so I doubt you have the brain power to understand it.
But, I will grow my food, and be a responsible inhabitant of the earth as best as I can be. When the catastrophe comes, I'll survive, and I'll help the rest carry on.
Any time some animal causes a hassle for humans, the reaction is, KILL IT, with absolutely NO UNDERSTANDING of that creature's role in the health of the environment.
Are you exactly cute enough to bring benefit to any of us? Probably not. But these creatures are beautiful and majestic. Not you.
Tie him down and shoot him with the sea lions . . .
That is a lot of sealions down there ravaging the coho and blackmouth. Maybe these were some that the local tribes tried to harvest but they drifted away. Don't worry sea lovers there are plenty to go around.
Are you stupid naturally or are you taking classes? Someone dropped you on your head when you were born!!!
@patric, the sea lions go to the fish ladders and wait. The fish run right into them. The sea lions will grab them by the belly, whip their heads and toss fish parts everywhere. They literally eat until they can't take another bite and they still kill them. They waste them. Its sickening. Its like someone blew up a dump truck full and they all landed in the water.
Which is exclusively the fault of the humans for building a physical obstacle in that location. Animals do not "waste," which connotes a willfully irresponsible action. It's not intentional, but likely that they just continue to be stimulated to hunt and kill due to the unnatural congregation of the fish. But this article is NOT about that one location.
HarryBalsaki: What you're describing reminds me of buffaloes being killed by people riding the train. They killed the buffalo just because apparently it was so much fun to kill thousands of them. We humans are still the record holders for wasting! The plains were littered by those carcasses rotting away. And that's just one example of very many.
woodrat & Karin, I don't disagree at all. I'm just stating fact. I live in the PNW and this is what happens. Yes, people built the dams. They built the fish ladders to help the salmon. Only so many can go at a time. The sea lions figured it out. Now we have to combat that issue. One way is to thin them out. I'm sure the Dept of Fisheries will take any reasonable ideas to fix this issue.
Humans are the MOST destructive species on this dirt ball called earth. They are responsible for the most extinctions since the dinosaurs and they are sooo stupid that they are about to do themselves in. In the mean time, since they multiply like the is no tomorrow, they wipe anything else they feel is threatening their stupid and selfish existence. Enough already, become extinct and leave the rest of earth´s wildlife alone, bloody mongrels!!!
thats what i keep telling my mexican neighor who has 12 kids and gets food stamps.
And which species is it you represent?
patric, start with your self. last time I checked wildlife animals cannot type. so if you want to be exticnt go to the hospital and request your lethal dose and get it over with. Humans use resources and we ALWAYS will as that is how we survive. Those of you that want NO resources to be used in any way need to turn off your lights sell your cars and house and go live as long as you can but do not drink the water or eat the berries as those are resources too. That should get nature back in order. Maybe a little compromise from the nuts on both sides could help but who knows. What we do know is the lunitics are running the asylum now and our economy is in the tank due to trying to save eveything. The left is going off the deep end but hey it is for our own good.
hey bobby jones... the species that puts into the system for decades of work paying my taxes, not the kind who jump the border and get all our gov't goodies for free without putting a dime into it.
I was talking to the human hater. However what do illegal aliens have to do with dead sea lions? Unless the North Koreans have one hell of a sniper rifle I wouldn't worry too much about foreigners right now.
Mikes, maybe you should get a dose of that yourself. Last I heard our economy wasn't in the @!$%#ter with anything to do with saving a damn thing, except maybe our interest in the middle east, and Obama's lousy bailout bid. If you are referring to all the special interests out there who think we need to modify entire laws to benefit a small group of people, or illegals who shouldn't even count then I will agree with you, but that's a completely different matter. There are now 7 BILLION people on this mudball and we are all using up resources at a crazy rate of consumption with little consideration for what we are doing to the environment. Don't be going off on "the left" because a few people want to keep our world livable for a few more generations, let alone the animal life that share this world with us. I don't support the left or the right, their both F'd up and full of their own agendas. Either way, I don't want to live on a planet that looks like a wasteland and I don't want my kids to. We need to stop things like this article speaks of or it will only open a door for other crimes of a similar nature.
I have a very tender heart and I hate any animal being killed intentionally or not. There has to be a way to fix the problems like this.
This clowns the problem. What kind of flake hates his own Species?
Sometimes my own species can be despicable.
I dont think that this is a human subsitence issue at all, people will not starve because the sea lions are eating the fish. Maybe an argument that would survive in some isolated village with no store or way to import food, but absolutely not in Seattle.
Why is everyone ignoring the commercial fishermen? This problem isn't because the sea lions are eating all of the salmon- it's because commercial fishing has decimated the fish stocks with unsustianable harvests. Guess what, when you remove the breeding adults from a population, theres no one to make new baby salmon.
This fish stock has collapsed because of human greed, the sea lions are just trying to survive too. We just have guns.
the commercial fishing in the ocean also leaves an incredible amount of fishing gear and "ghost nets" that are one factor in the sea lions' decline. They just continue to drift and kill thousands of animals: birds, whales, seals, fish. Until you've seen it, you would not believe it.
So lets get the sea sheppard involved. He should be pulling the whales back out to sea in New Zealand but NO he has to get involved with this silly crap here. It is known that they are not endangered and probably were shot by fisherman! not Cowards, They have also had to shoot them off of Dams on the Columbia because it is known they are pests. unfortunate that they feel the ne3ed to find one scapegoat and blame it all on him.
People that kill for fun or trophy hunters make me want to puke! I hunt. I also eat what I kill and don't kill more than I need. I can't eat horns. If you think what these people are doing is "cool" perhaps you should see a shrink, because most serial killers start out torturing and killing animals. It's not a joke and it's not funny.
AnimalKiller banned. Nothing but personal attacks.
Failed audition.
Whats the fuss? Salmon, sea lions, people. All are endangered to some extent. The balance needs to be reset. Adopt a sea lion and keep it in your tub and feed it tofu.
Not entirely true... "Salmon, sea lions, people. All are endangered to some extent."... There are 7 Billion people now, not exactly what I would call "endangered" by any means. The balance does need to be reset but we keep growing in number while killing or destroying what gets in our way.
People aren't endangered. People caused animals and plants to be endangered. People have caused extinctions of animals.
Sea lions are carnivores. Back to school for you.
School for you peridiot, the noble indians were in the way and look what history has to say about that. Have a germ infested blanket, we'll just kill off your food supply and then herd you to the stinking desert res. Humans are endangered to many and to much religion. Just look to the middle east countries and what they think of you, they don't give a hang about your endangered sea lions or anything else you deem precious. Lock and load slow brain.
I understand that the fishermen are just trying to make a living, but, if there is no fish, then they can grow food, or get a part time job doing something else. The Sea Lions, and Seals, can only follow their nose and eat what they find. Instead of the Government trying to change the world to suit their needs, why don't they do something, like their jobs, what we vote on them to do. If these fishermen can't fish, then they can repair roads, work on bridges and clear brush to keep it from catching fire, and starting a wildfire. There are altenatives for humans. Not for the sea lions!
$10,000 reward? hell i'd kill the gutless bastard that's doin this for free!!!!!
So your a gutless bastard then?
Sing it;; hank style...why do say... gutless bastard that way...why must you say you'll do it for free...only to charge a fee...if you stop and think it over...put yourself in his unique gutless bastard shooting position...it's a gutless bastard tradition...LOL
bet the sea lions would put a bullet in those fisher men if they could...with those killer props on those boats and drowning nets and all the food they take...arm the sea lions...or send in a seal team...
sea lion bbq yummy
Would that taste like beef infused with fish? What would you serve with a red meat that tasted like fish? You'd need a red wine & garlic potatoes, right?? What veggie? No wonder they don't serve it in restaurants. Dang Paul. Would you want to use lemon on it? Sea lion bbq sounds like a great idea, but it raises so many questions. How would you cook it? Skin on or off? You'd only get the fat on one side. How does blubber cook off? Flare ups would kill you. AAARRRRRGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!! Now I'm all hungry and stuff. Who's got pinniped cookbook? Do they make one? Paul, I'm not too far from Woodinville. Got any ideas???
Harry; first you have to Americanize your name before you get invited to bbq's in this Country....we'z don't like no damn fornerrz here.
That is the Americanized version. My family is from The Eastern Bloc. My old world name is Crown Prince Haruthanika Yurishenko Balsakijuniski-Stoyakovich IV, Heir to the Throne of Balsakistan, Commodor of The Royal Balsakistan Ground, Air & River Forces, Embassador of The People, Royal Wrangler of Concubines and Grand Exaulter of Space Time & Dimension (that's our space program). I'm just here on a student visa.
The problem is not the sea lions--it is the indians. They free net across the rivers cut the eggs out of the salmon and throw thousands of carcasses on the beach. Salmon shortage? Blame them.
Um, are you a COMPLETE idiot?
1. This is about Sea Lions. Not Salmon.
2. NATIVE AMERICANS use EVERY part of the animal they need.
Remember we stole this land from them but if this is true than our Government needs to do something but when has our Governemnt done anything for us American's other than take and take. Remember you have to be an illegal if you want the Government to help you.
It's probably those Damn fisherman; honestly...who else coul it be? Nobody or nothing else is threatened by these Sea-Lions. If your 'Catch" is down because of a few Sea-Lions...hey...I have news for ya; why don't you go back to school and learn how to do something else besides fish??? Really, is that all you can do??? There a few Humans on this Planet that really make me sad; they have no respect for Life; or this Planet; probably not even for themselves :(
Clearly some people here cannot appreciate the balance that is nature and prefer to justify human behavior as superior, when in reality, humans are to blame for much in the way of killing the planet. The Human race needs pruning ideally.
