PETA
Various airlines ship monkeys to testing labs around the world. PETA says these boxes contained monkeys being shipped via air to Shin Nippon in Edmonds, Wash.
A daylong bombardment of emails, social media posts and phone calls led Air France to cancel a planned shipment Wednesday of monkeys to a testing lab in the U.S., People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals claimed in a campaign aimed at getting all airlines to ban the practice.
Air France declined to comment on the specific shipment of 60 monkeys from Mauritius, but PETA provided msnbc.com with a copy of an email purportedly sent by an Air France cargo official in Chicago, Ill., to PETA that states: "Our colleagues overseas have confirmed that this scheduled shipment of monkeys has been cancelled."
The campaign follows PETA allegations of abuses at the U.S. branch of a Japanese testing lab. Several airlines were targeted at the time, and PETA followed up with a daylong bombardment earlier this week.
"We don't know whether they will accept future shipments of primates destined for laboratories but are strongly urging them not to and will be monitoring the situation closely like we have been," Justin Goodman, PETA's associate director for lab investigations, told msnbc.com.
"We have written to Air France officials to urge them to adopt a formal policy against transporting primates destined for laboratories as nearly every other major airline in the world already does, including Air France’s partner airlines Delta and Alitalia," he added. "We have not yet received a response."
Goodman noted that "we are in touch with all of the remaining major airlines that do not yet prohibit shipping primates to laboratories, and are making progress with several of them."
He identified them as: Air China, China Eastern Airlines, China Southern Airlines, TAM Airlines, Continental Airlines, Philippine Airlines, and Vietnam Airlines.
"Air Canada also does not yet prohibit this practice but is currently going to great lengths to get the required permission from the Canadian government to create such a companywide ban," he added.
While not commenting on a specific shipment, Air France spokeswoman Brigitte Barrand did tell msnbc.com that:
"Air France Cargo refuses to transport laboratory animals destined for any use other than medical" research.
"In addition, Air France Cargo ensures that all biomedical research involving the use of animals in laboratories with which the airline works is fully in line with current legislation and the regulations drawn up by scientific organizations specializing in animal welfare.
"Air France Cargo refuses transportation if the testing protocols do not conform to these regulations and visits all customers to make sure this is the case. Air France Cargo also monitors the supplier, who must comply with the breeding rules in force."
Goodman countered that the U.S. lab in question, Shin Nippon Biomedical Laboratories, has been repeatedly fined for violating U.S. animal welfare laws.
He also questioned Air France's claim that it only ships animals to labs for "medical" testing. "SNBL is a contract organization, which means that they test whatever anyone pays them to test, including drugs, chemicals, pesticides and cosmetics," Goodman said. "So unless Air France is asking SNBL for documentation for specifically how each and every monkey is being used at the lab, it is impossible for Air France — and the public — to know whether their policy is being adhered to or not."

As an animal rights advocate I say, well done PETA!
PETA is a great organization - they really get things done for animals. Testing on animals is an outdated and reprehensible practice. It's so sad that animal advocates like PETA have to be the ones to push the medical industry into the 21st century, but I'm so glad they are doing it, for the sake of animals AND humans.
Damn! I was going to eat those monkeys!
The PETA folks are free to volunteer as replacement test subjects. Please. Do it today.
Gaithersburger
Do you have Children?
Would you refuse lifesaving drugs or treatments tested on animals either for yourself or for your children?
I am so happy that PETA acted quickly. Instead of being in a labratory, these poor animals get to stay on the airport tarmac in France. Its so much better for them to be breathing jet engine exhaust and diesal engine fumes. YAAH PETA!!!!!
Is that supposed to be positive or negative?
PETA is nothing but a bunch of idiots.
Start with cats & dogs.
You rock PETA! When will the suffering end?

I get amazed at PETA and all the other animal rights groups. They scream and yell about tested on animals and then in the same breath order drugs that were developed by testing with these animals.
Do not get me wrong, I do not believe in cruel testing such as burning them, or spraying toxic chemicals on them, but when it comes time to life saving drugs I have no problem as long as they are well taken care of and after a time allowed to retire to life that is free from the burdens.
And for you that do not like this, then get off your insulin, and a host of other diabetic drugs, get off your birth control, toss out most if not all of your antibiotics. And if you feel so strongly about it then why don't you go in and volunteer yourself for testing so these poor animals do not have to suffer.
You people shame me, you scream louder over a dog or animal that is abused then if one of our own children get abused. You need to take the same energy and fight for our little ones that live in hell that you spend on these children and we will have a much better world. But as long as you seem to think in the great scheme of things that a animals life is more valuable then a humans then you are just a bunch of fringe nut jobs.
99% of all animal testing is not necessary. 80% of what the Medical community treats you with does more harm than good. Don't let medical authorities mislead you. The body gets sick from cancer and many other things because the body is not healthy. By adding chemo all you are doing is making the body more unhealthy. The Human body has an innate capacity to heal itself, when you give it proper nutrition and clean out all the toxins from years of processed nutritionally empty foods, medications, chemicals etc. This may have saved her and many others whom have died or suffered at the hands of uninformed, unintelligent, Ignorant, and self important medical Doctors.
Start by watching some videos, then do some research, read books. You will come to the logical conclusions I have. Don't judge until you investigate. I am not saying all medical Doctors are bad I happen to know a few very good ones; there just aren't as many good ones as there should be in this day and age.
A good place for people to start is watch the movie Food Matters and The Gerson Miracle. Go to The DoctorYourself website and then you will find thousands of other places to go look. Search Raw foods also.
Remember that the history of the medical communities are full of stories of the ridiculous things that Doctors used to treat their patients with, chemo will be one of these things in the next few hundred years. Remember most Doctors recommended smoking for good health, they used to bleed people and almost killed president Washington by doing this, For something as simple as a b12 deficiency that would cause mental symptoms they would lobotomize their patients now for the last 30 years B12 deficiency went unchecked by Doctors and many ended up with incurable Nerve problems/Neurological problems(this is still happening now with other Deficiencies as well as B12 by informed Doctors everywhere. There are too many to list here today that are problems caused by medical Doctors/medical science. Females used to received orgasms from their Doctors as a cure for odd behavior. That was yesterday today we have a whole new list that future generations will look back on with disgust one of these is the many humans and animals combined that were killed and harmed by the medical community. Some helpful quotes:
Doctors give drugs of which they know little,
into bodies, of which they know less,
for diseases of which they know nothing at all.
Voltaire
Let food be thy medicine, and let thy medicine be food.
Hippocrates
The germ is nothing; the terrain is everything.
Louis Pasteur
The art of medicine consists in amusing the patient while nature cures the disease.
Voltaire
The specific disease doctrine is the grand refuge of weak, uncultured, unstable minds such as now rule in the medical profession.
Florence Nightingale
There is a principle which is a bar against all information,
which is proof against all argument,
and which cannot fail to keep man in everlasting ignorance.
That principle is condemnation without investigation.
William Paley (1743-1805), often attributed to Herbert Spencer (1820-1903)

PETA is a joke......I am sure most of them own leather shoes, belts, purses, etc! Hypocrits all of them. PETA...... PEOPLE EATING TASTY ANIMALS!
For all you insensitive nutjobs chastising the PETA organization, where the hell are you getting your facts? These are regular people that do this because of the inhumane torture disguised as medical testing as these labs. If go onto the NEAVS website, whose members are scientists, doctors, former labatory workers, etc., you will see that there are far more competent ways to test medical drugs, and that testing on animals does not work! For those selfish idiots that state that people that support PETA prefer animals to humans, you are quite ignorant! Does everyone have to support only those charities of your choosing? Does it have to be one or the other? People that want to help those that cannot speak or stand up for themselves are to be congratulated and admired for the selfless acts they perform. And for that moron who said that "PETA screams and yells about animal testing and then uses that very same medicine." Why don't you pull your head out of your ass. Instead of complaining on a website, why don't you put your money where you mouth is! I for one support many causes, PETA being one, hospice and a local children's hospital. I have also seen firsthand the uneccesary torture and abuse done at these "medical testing labs" And what about testing for cosmetics? You think that's okay too? Try a little humanity!
I'm sorry, as a nursing student, I'd love for someone to give me another safe way to test medications for humans that would ultimately work. One of the major problems if you take animals out of the testing is simply this: you can test a drug on specific body tissues, you can test it on every body tissue if you have the money and the time, but there is no way, other than testing it on a living, breathing animal, to find out how a drug might actually impact a living system in its entirety. It's all one big balancing act, and to suggest that you can take the living being out of the testing process and still have anything close to the same level of knowledge regarding how a drug might work is just plain incorrect. We already don't know enough about so many medications, this would cut the knowledge we have in half.
I am all for less cruelty, and I also think that in some instances there are alternatives. But at the end of the day, would you prefer drugs that do save lives (many in fact) to be tested on you? Or not to be developed at all because there is no way to have anything like a concept of how they'll interact with a living thing, and the current FDA laws wouldn't allow it to even enter human testing without that? We saw days of drugs not being extensively tested before release once, would you like to see them again?
If you think chemotherapy or other drug methods aren't worth the animals they were tested on, we're going to have to agree to disagree. My dad is alive to see me get married thanks to those methods, and as much as I love animals, I can't say I'd ever consider trading his life for theirs.
Andrea, you're an idiot. All of your quotes are from famous people that lived hundreds or thousands of years ago. There is no one who received their medical degree in the 20th or 21st century who say anything like that, as our understanding of biology and medicine is considerably more advanced. They were still bleeding people to cure "disease" in Pasteur's time.
It seems you lack even a shred of intellectual honesty.
Ok first of all for the general public who knows little to nothing about biomedical research, the FDA, the folks who approve all the things you put in or on your body requires ANY item seeking FDA approval to be tested in a MINIMUM of 2 species other than HUMANS prior to being tested in humans! One must be of a rodent species (mouse, hamster, gerbil, rat, guinea pig) and one must be a non-rodent species (rabbit, cat, dog, pig, monkey, etc). Monkeys represent less than 1% of all animal used in biomedical research!!
Now on to a sadder fact for the PETA folks who think they have SAVED the monkeys, no dumb asses you have just signed their death certificate as now that the monkeys have left Maritius they will not be allowed to return and will be euthanized since no one is going to claim them!!!!!!!!!!!
I work in the biomedical research filed and I am an animal lover! My job is to ensure that all animals used in our facilities receive the highest quality veterinary care and housing while on study. Remember these animals are purpose bred for research and would cease to exist if biomedical research stopped. Much like if everyone in the world stopped eating meat then beef cattle, pigs and chickens would cease to exist because farmers would stop breeding them to be slaughtered for your dinner!!!
If you woke up today showered and washed your hair with shampoo, brushed your teeth with toothpaste, put on deodorant or cosmetics, took an OTC or prescription medication then you have benefited from biomedical research! If you have a loved one (including your pets) who has survived cancer, or had a life saving operation then you and your pet have benefited from biomedical research!
Become informed and think before you act or speak!!!!!
Seriously, PETA is far from a reputable organization. What they use are scare tactics to fill you with false facts and make you believe everything done in research is bad. Most money, like other pro animal organizations, does not actually end up going towards animals and helping them. Before you go saying that PETA is wonderful and the best, know the truth. Also, do you really think testing is out of date. Most of the testing CAN NOT be replicated without the use of animals. On top of that, they are taken care of better than some peoples animals. Then to use scare tactics to get an airline to not ship them.......you are no better. Those animals ended up sitting in the cages even longer rather than reaching their destination. Then you think they are better off and going back to the wild....WRONG. They are raised in captivity like cows are for meat. So no they don't end up back in the wild. To boot, if you have ever gotten a vaccination, took a pain reliever or had surgery then guess what you have used something tested on animals !!!!!!! If you didn't have research you would be dead already.
In lieu of animals might I suggest asking PETA members for volunteers.
Another: Might I suggest--strongly suggest--that you volunteer to undergo very painful procedures with no anesthetic, just like these monkeys were destined to do?
Oh nice Another Fine Mess wants to volunteer. Thanks AFM!
Did I say I was part of PETA?
I eat meat and wear leather, as for animal testing I'm not capable of the level of hypocrisy necessary to get squeamish about it.
Normally I find PETA's methods extreme and disgusting, but they did good on this one. Kudos.
Good job peta. Now primates can die on long ocean voyages rather then get where they're going swiftly. Getting airlines to stop shipping will stop nothing and cause more animals to die during transport from being confined much longer than an air flight would normally take. As long as animal testing remains legal, animals will be tested. Now the animals will get to be confined in shipping containers longer than they were being transported by air.
Where in this article was this detail disclosed? Now, please pack up your lice infested tent in the park, donate your 14 year old runaway to another Bag Crapper, and report to a testing lab. Make sure the lab doesn't require any mental dexterity.
hibor
I thought that was common knowledge. Where have you been hiding?
mozzie-600 That was incredible how you took what Another Fine Mess wrote and then wrote almost exactly the same thing right back to him. After the obvious deep thought and consideration that went into that response you should really take a rest so as to not over tax that finely honed mind of yours before your next epistle.
nibor: Remind me not to get on this site at night. Too many drunks.
This origination PETA should worry about human lives and as far as i'am concerned most of them need to volunter to be a human,They make me sick with their commercials depicting these soooo called poor animals with no home or love, vomit, puke. Get a life!
PETA does care about human lives - humans are animals too. And get your facts straight, those are NOT PETA's commercials! Watch them again - it's WWF, HSUS, and the ASPCA. Go complain to them and stop blaming PETA, who is doing wonderful things for ALL animals!
so the 8 million animals left in shelters per year and the 4 million that are put to death because of a lack of good homes are 'So called poor animals' ? You'd enjoy living in a 4x4 cage, then..?
Instead of being angry at you, I feel very sorry that you have no yet come to understand what it's really all about. I do hope it occurs to you one day.
That would certainly explain all the grunting and moaning.
Vicky
Does that include the ones it puts down?
http://www.peta.org/about/why-peta/no-kill-shelters.aspx
PETA does such wonderful things for animals like burning them alive and freezing them into a slow death. PETA also sanctions such Noble causes as murders and terrorist arson attacks. If I had Children I would want them to grow up to act like PETA or maybe someone with similair principles, like Al Qaeda...
jerkity jerk jerk!
Erika- Have you even read the COH? Try discussing your side of the article without childish name calling. Reported.
In the 70s PETA broke into into a spinal injury testing lab during the night; they connected a spinal injury machine up to a live monkey and delivered a paralyzing blow to the poor animal. PETA taped the process then released it as how cruel the testing lab was as if that how the researchers treated the animals. WTF!!! The difference is, the researchers placed the animal in a medical coma prior to any testing; PETA likes to leave out the most important facts then turn around and commit the very crimes they accuse others of. They are terrorists in their own right.
PETA was started in the '80s...
Scott Brewer, I prefer the chance that the animals in shelters might be adopted to just killing them. Why can't PETA be honest about what it does? PETA KILLS animals. That's the ugly truth.
May I suggest that we use animal abusers for lab experiments? I would love to watch!
Tudybop....I agree, use the animal abusers, rapists, murderers, and child abusers for medical research. There are certainly enough of them.
Agreed. Sherrif Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County AZ tends to grab headlines for all the wrong reasons these days, but he is an ardent animal lover and vigorously arrests those who would abuse animals. Part of his thinking is that it's not much of a leap for a sociopath to go from animal abuse to human abuse. He's gone after dog and cock fighters, greyhound racing people who mistreat or destroy dogs, and even a pig farm for less than humane conditions. Lock your pooch in your car during the hot summer and he might put you up in his luxurious tent city.
Could probably even arrange your active participation.
I can honestly and non-ironicly state:
Go Joe!
This is a great victory in the fight to end testing on animals, specifically non-human primates.
P.E.T.A. ?
Gaithersburger you say that now until you have to look your daughter or grandchild in the eyes as they lay dying because of not enough treatment available due to the lack of experiments being done. The sad fact is this is our closest relatives out there. And there are somethings in life we must do whether we like it or not, this is an example. At any moment we could be one monkey away from a cure for Aids or Cancer I love animals but Peta goes to far. Screw Peta!
As someone who comes from a family who has watched two members suffer terrible deaths from disease and three members be incredibly sick with incurable disease, we will say it: we do not support testing on these primates. This is not one of those things we must do whether we like it or not.
It is difficult to decide if you are full of BS or your family needs to change its dating and breeding habits.
@ Heavens - I disagree. Animal testing is what we must do. I don't know if you rememebr, but years ago several African American men were experiemented on and many died. So if you have to kill a primate as opposed to my brother to find a cure for a disease, I say go for it. It is one of those things that we must do.
Could it be possible to build a monkey pipeline ?
Bwahahahahahahahahah
I almost spewed coffee on my computer.
While I don't like the idea of using animals for testing what are the alternatives?
alternative = using animal abusers, rapist, murderers, and child molesters......there are certainly enough of them.
There are also several test simulators that exist and are constantly advancing within the industry that could be used very effectively for a wide range of tests out there. You of course have to mention that a very large portion of animal testing is deemed inconclusive or unusable because animal physiology is not as close to human as some vivisectors might want you to believe.
There are no alternatives. The only legal way to proceed with this sort of testing is to use willing human participants. And just about no matter of compensation will make most people allow themselves to develop cancer so that treatments can be tested. It just won't happen, ever. While I rather enjoy the notion of using life without parole and death row inmates as test subjects, that route is out as well. Any medical testing on unwilling human participants violates countless domestic and international laws. So we have to just make sure that the animals are treated as humanely as possible as they suffer for our benefit. It isn't pleasant to think about, but it is necessary for us to have things like vaccines and cancer treatments.
Computer simulations are inadequate for simulating the complexities of living beings. A supercomputer can only make calculations for things that can be programmed into it. We don't know all the human proteins that can interact with drugs. We actually have entire supercomputers dedicated entirely just to find a protein's most stable conformation. So there is no way in hell a simulation can work in place of an animal. Not to mention a single supercomputer's maintenance can exceed 10 million dollars per year. That would make a year's worth of testing cost well into the trillions. Unacceptable, unless you want a single visit to the doctor to cost a few hundred thousand dollars.
Hi Gary -- Please check out: for authoratative information on the wealth of replacements to animals in toxicity testing. The site is hosted by groups such as the American Chemistry Council and Proctor & Gamble. Many of the replacements discussed are faster, cheaper, and more reliable than animal tests.
PETA volunteers as long as the experiments don't require any basic intelligence.
Alright PETA...go to the nearest medicine and desease lab and roll up your sleeves for injections...you can all be the new monkeys...after all...we would not have the life saving vacines we do today if not for animal testing..I'm sorry for the poor animals. but what else can we do?
Isn't that a bit insulting to the monkeys?
nibor:
Nah, they're too busy forming MMM (Monkeys Murdering Morons).
I am happy that there are people who are strongly against animal testing. However, these groups, like PETA are targeting the wrong people. It is not the scientists who want to test animals. Indirectly, it is general population. People demand to have "safe" medicines, food, etc. Toxicologist, scientists, etc. have to follow certain guidelines to assure safety. These guidelines are setup by numerous people involved in assessing risk. In the mean time, toxicologists are taking many approaches to eliminate animal use for safety testing, etc by developing alternatives (cell culture models, etc) that may be able in the future to predict similar to whole animal testing. However, this is not an easy thing to create overnight due to a lack of resources (people and money) and complexity (how can a cell line mimic a whole changing/evolving animal). If you really want to make a difference in animal rights, push your government to increase science funding to develop alternatives. In Europe, they have made this pledge in the cosmetic industry, and while, it is behind schedule, alternatives are slowly emerging to test for cosmetic use (skin-toxicity). Other areas (e.g. development, cancer) are much more complicated and will take years of research to complete. Stopping this freight of monkeys is waste. These monkeys are gone from the wild. They will be destroyed one way or another. Yes, we are sick species....who destroys animals in many inhumane ways (did you eat meat tonight for dinner?). If we are serious about eliminating animal use for toxicity testing, we need to put the money in the right areas.
"It is not the scientists who want to test animals. Indirectly, it is general population."
Actually, Goodspeed - in a lot of cases (dare I say the majority?) this is simply not the case. A lot of scientists make good money off of what, from a third party point of view is basically useless animal testing. They ask for funding and they get it based on their own desire to do that research a lot of times. Sometimes they are even asking to re-research findings that only 20-25 years ago were found to be conclusive and have been widely used by humans for that time range.
I would also like to mention that there is no 'waste' to keeping these animals out of labs. That is like the 'It's already dead' excuse to eat meat. Even if these apes were euthanized that day, don't you think it would be better for them that years of excruciating pain and constant confusion at the hands of vivisectors and their useless tests..?
There are always 'better' ways to do things, but to neglect the needs of those apes short term because it isn't the 'best' option long term is just cruel in and of itself.
This is incredible news! Great job, PETA!!!
Stop animal testing!!!!!!!!!!!
News Release: After not being able to ship the monkeys as planned and with no where else to take them they were all delivered to a Chinese Restaurant.
Its France. They'll become part of Monkey Brains soup.
Well done PETA! Now if we can only put an end to all the tesing on primates!!
PETArds.
Good one! LMAO!
I usually don't agree with PETA's methods but I abhor animal abuse and testing, so bravo to them for this.
Way to go PETA! Air France and other airlines should refuse to have a hand in cruelty to animals. We can walk on the moon--we can find humane alternatives to these antiquated tests on animals.
Why not PETA as a source. There must be some that qualify as low level primates?
There is no reason to abuse poor defenseless animals for any kind of so-called testing. Once again humans have put themselves above all other species, the arrogance is mind-boggling. And for you who say animals need to be persecuted so maybe one more human may live? Remember no one gets out of here alive, and last I knew no one was guaranteed a 90 year lifespan either! The ridiculous fear of death in this country and the lengths fools go to to stay alive even in misery for just one more day--sad state of affairs. This applies to kids too--just because YOU think they are worth more than a primate--many would not agree with you including me. However, I think the suggestion to use child molesters, rapists, is a fine plan.
There is a reason humans have put themselves above all other species, we ARE above all other species. Duh!!!!
When you gain some intelligence, you too will be welcomed to the human race.
As to your tirade against fighting death, you are welcome to volunteer for a terminal disease at any time.
Good, we have now found our first alternative low level primate. The current primates can be better used for any testing requiring intelligence. There must be more.
Anyone who says that primates are worth more than human children is too whacked out to pay attention to.
@dirp101: Your logic is flawed. Does that mean that people with superior intellect(geniuses) should treat the rest of the population like a different, less evolved species and make life and death decisions on their behalf? It is because of our intelligence and capability to reason that we should try to protect the weak. Also the fact that you are quick to jump and insult someone on a personal level in order to appear more "intelligent"only proves otherwise. Good mental health to you my friend!
Actually, we people of superior intelligence don't worry about the rest of the population, which is, by definition, less evolved.
Well done! As a doctor, my firm opinion is that animal testing is outdated, inaccurate, and useless.
Good thing you are not my doctor.
Most likely a doctor of contemporary Sanskrit culture and language.
Well Doctor you should volunteer for medical testing and fulfill your hippocratic oath to humanity.
There are lots of alternatives to animal testing and they're far more superior. The only reason we continue to test on animals is because the vivisection industry is a big business. Labs get huge grants for animal experiments, breeders get lots of money to breed animals used in these tests, and companies that make equipment especially for testing on animals, like restraining devices, make tons of money too. Animal testing is really outdated and doesn't lead to much progress. You can go here for more info:
If you don't agree with animal testing for medical purposes then you should stand by your convictions and not use ANYTHING that is able to do what it does because of Animal Testing. No more drugs. You get Cancer you better suck it up and try some prayer, and don't you DARE go to a Doctor.
Animal testing is not done because it's fun. It's done because that is the only viable option. Some things are tested on strains of animals, mainly mice, that have been extensively breed to be exactly what it needs to be. Many suggest testing on prisoners, well are we going to breed and clone the prisoners to get the exact genes scientists need to test their drug or technique?
I am so glad to see that this shipment was stopped. Bravo, PETA (and shame on Air France for having anything to do with the ghouls that experiment on animals!)
