Nuns fight strip club near Ill. convent

Chicago nuns say they are keeping prospective employees at a soon-to-be strip club in their prayers despite the establishment's close proximity to their convent.

CHICAGO -- A group of nuns is ready to fight a new strip club adjacent to a Roman Catholic convent in suburban Stone Park.

Sister Marissonia Daltoe told the Chicago Sun-Times she's not only concerned about the morality of the club, but the legality of it, specifically whether it was built too close to the nuns’ property line.

“What are we trying to teach the children in the neighborhood?” Daltoe of the Missionary Sisters of Saint Charles Borromeo – Scalabrinians told the Sun-Times.

The club, still under construction, is tentatively called “Get It” and will feature partially nude performers and alcohol, the Sun-Times reports. It sought approval from the town in 2010.

The convent, which includes a home for elderly and sick nuns and a place for young women to join the sisterhood, would sit adjacent to the club. The venue is less than two feet from the nuns’ property, which sits partially in Stone Park and partially in Melrose Park, according to the publication.

Daltoe said the town didn't officially notify them of the project, and Stone Park officials told the Sun-Times they sent notification letters to the wrong address because of an apparent Cook County error. The letters aren't required.

Town officials say they met all other legal requirements, though Mayor Beniamino Mazzulla told the paper he signed on to the deal only after a 2010 lawsuit against Stone Park by developers.

The owner of Get It told the Sun-Times he wants to be a good neighbor and will limit the light and noise from the club. He said the club will be a high-tech, high-class venue.

Another strip club sits down the street from the one still being built.

O'k there may be compliments here; the sisters at the convent will be tested in thier faith, and the strippers may be enlightened to the fact that its not flesh that brings contentment, yet that of a believe; and hey you never know love might just come out of it.

Nobody has any class anymore, or consideration for others. It's a selfish country now. There aren't even that many nuns left, they devote their lives to others, and they get treated like this, like they're nothing.

the catholic church with its history, should really just back out of this arguement. yes, the priests molested kids, but who here really believes that with the sheer numbers of abuse the penguins knew nothing about it. i love how the kings and queens of nasty are always on the front lines telling the rest of the world how they should live their lives.

Are you referring to the nuns, or the strippers?

I think once built, the nuns should put a camera on the entrance to the building or parking lot and everyperson that goes into the establishment should be posted on a public website over and over of the previous nights visitors along with a large tv that displays the same. then see how much potential business is lost because of the publicity

Sure put a camera on the club and expose the customers. Then lets run next door to the convent and find out how many nuns are hiding out from something, then lets head out around the world to find out where and who else is hiding behind the curtain of the church. Or maybe where their new parish is after being run out of the last one. Second thought, let's just stop throwing stones.

Why is this unfair? If it is legal then it should be allowed, right? Isn't that the logic here or is it all one sided against decency. You should be tolerant of the nuns right to fight back.

Let's recap: Mount a camera on someone else's private property so you can post photos of their customers on a defamatory website. My, how "decent" of the decency advocates. You should give it a try...be sure to let me know how the lawsuit turns out.

                #64.4 - Thu Feb 9, 2012 1:51 AM EST

put it on your own land and point it at the entrance cameras have come a long way you can put it quite a distance away and still get a picture as though you were standing right there if they block it you just move the location of the camera. If you cannot get the shot from your land there appears to be pleanty of other property next to the property that you could get the shot, so set up a lease with those owners for short money and setup camp. if your not on their land there is nothing they can do about it. The church has a lot of money so money is no object.

if the strip club being 2' away is to close to the property line, wouldn't the church also be to close to the property line since it's obviously 2' away from the strip club...shouldn't matter which one was there first,if it's illegal for 1 its illegal for both

And to all of you who dont research things before you spout off on them. This has nothing to do with kids or schools or anything else. THERE ARE NO SCHOOLS IN STONE PARK IL!!! NOT ONE PUBLIC SCHOOL THE TOWN IS TOO SMALL AND RUN DOWN. There are no children in this town because it is all industrial and retail NO RESIDENTIAL DISTRICT. You would be afraid to drive down mannheim road at 10 pm in this neighborhood. Carjackings shootings and the like are the norm. The only bright spots are the few open strip clubs and the rail yard. The towns surrounding are rough but not as much as stone park.

The truly pious and genuine followers' of God on this earth (not followers' of man's religion, who are bigots and often more corrupt than politicians), in this country... Would have no problem with the club being built but for the simple fact of attempting to show those who have lost their way where the path to a higher power is. Nun's protest, I say I'm going to protest their righteousness...that...and their tax breaks. Hypocrisy is the driving force of evil in this world today and I think it should be stomped out with enthusiasm.

If a tax break invalidates an institution then all non-profits need to be closed.

When I was fourteen, I used to "pleasure" a nun, two, sometimes three times a week. That went on for about three years and I'm sure I wasn't the only one. Just 'cause they're called nuns don't mean they ain't gettin' none. LMAO

Thank you all for your entertaining comments. I can always use a laugh, but on a serious note, the soution to this problem is for the city to put a hold on the liquor license because they allowed this to get so screwed up, the convent needs to put their money where their mouths are and buy the property at cost including investments made by the owner ( they can resell it to whomever and for whatever purpose they see fit if the don't want to develop it themselves), and the club owner must find another property with the help of the city that is appropiate for the clubs purpose. I just hope they can stop bickering long enough to see their way out of this mess. If not I will be awaiting the news footage of the nuns protesting the new club on opening night. Like I said, I can always use a laugh. :)

The Obama administration is pressuring some churches to provide protection from the ravages of accidental pregnancies, how stupid, and now the clown wants to see a hot house built next to a convent. This is Emanuel and Blagiovich country. Maybe Michelle should take back that hospital job her husband found for her.

To put that dopy thing right next to their retirement home is disgraceful. I don't believe there is such a thing as a "high class" strip club, as the builder/owner described it. Just by it's difinition, a strip club is run by low-lifes, for low-lifes, and attracts bums and drunks. It has no business being next to a convent.

I sit on a zoning board. We make decisions based on the code and can't deviate from that. Nuns have a way to slow things down if they didn't receive proper notice. That is in most codes.

It has to be Christians and other religious people supporting these places since only a third of the population in the United States are of no religious affilliation.

The old testament is still in the bible. Looks to me like if it were no longer valid it would be removed and preachers would no longer give sermons based on any of its content, but they still do and our society still suffers from its brainwashing. In the new testament I find Ephesians 5:22 just as disrespectful as the crap in the old testament.

We need more strip clubs, more prostitution outlets, more STDs like we need more HIV infected people. I know that in Chicago corruption, prostitution, drugs are kings, but my God, next to a convent? I want to know how much money changed hands and I want to know how many politicians are involved. Why guns, drugs are prohibited from schools, but not from convents? Something doesn't add up. Christians, specially catholics, aren't supposed to kill nor use drugs and nuns being that they are considered Christ's wives and as such they do not kill nor use drugs. I don't recall The Bible speaking of Christ killing or using drugs, ergo, it doesn't make any sense to put a place so corrupt, so evil next to a convent. The mafia is catholic, ergo, why can't they go next to the Capitol building in Washington and there they would make a killing in both senses of the word, literally and figuratively speaking and will have customers 24/7, specially when congress is in session. Impeach the whole council and not tomorrow, but today.
