CNN suspends commentator Roland Martin over Beckham ad tweets

Roland Martin.

After apologizing for what he called a misunderstanding, Roland Martin is out at CNN.

The network announced Wednesday afternoon that the analyst would be suspended for the foreseeable future.

VIDEOS: David Beckham's Underwear Ad and Other Super Bowl Commercials of 2012

"Roland Martin's tweets were regrettable and offensive," reads the statement. "Language that demeans is inconsistent with the values and culture of our organization, and is not tolerated. We have been giving careful consideration to this matter, and Roland will not be appearing on our air for the time being."

Prompting all of the furor was Martin's Twitter commentary on Super Bowl commercials, particularly one about the underwear clad David Beckham (below).

"If a dude at your Super Bowl party is hyped about David Beckham's H&M underwear ad," he wrote, "smack the ish out of him!"

This ad aired during the second quarter of Super Bowl XLVI.

GLAAD (Gay Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) immediately responded by demanding his removal from the news network, though Martin insisted that his tweet was not a homophobic encouragement of violence -- but a dig at soccer fans.

"Let me address the issue that some in the LGBT community have raised regarding some of my Super Bowl tweets yesterday," he wrote. "I made several cracks about soccer as I do all the time. I was not referring to sexuality directly or indirectly regarding the David Beckham ad, and I'm sorry folks took it otherwise."

The apology was not enough to satisfy those calling for his removal. Following CNN's news, GLADD responded by applauding the network's actions.

"CNN today took a strong stand against anti-LGBT violence and language that demeans any community,” said GLAAD spokesperson Rich Ferraro in a statement. “Yesterday, Martin also spoke out against anti-LGBT violence. We look forward to hearing from CNN and Roland Martin to discuss how we can work together as allies and achieve our common goal of reducing anti-LGBT violence as well as the language that contributes to."

Martin has not yet addressed his suspension, but in keeping with his mea culpa, he linked to a story about the victim of an anti-gay beating on his blog, RolandMartinReports.com.

It is unfortunate that CNN chose to deal with Mr Martin's innocuous comments in such a summary manner. The mass media have become so overly protective of their public persona and political correctness that thay have left common sense and the right of free speech along the roadside. While the gay community assuredly has it's right to protest derogatory or inflammatory comments from public figures when warranted, Mr Martin's remarks were made in the light of comic relief regarding the uber-virile image of Mr Beckham juxtaposed against an underwear ad. Everyone involved simply needs to lighten up a bit ... it's the twenty first century.

Peace to all

Good riddance. Roland Martin is a blowhard offensive mouthpiece of Obama. Thanks, CNN, for getting rid of this guy.

Once again that pesky "free speech" constitutional right is ignored. You can say whatever you want as long as you don't offend one of the millions of "special interest" groups that will have your head for doing so. This country is going right down the tubes. Say whatever you want as that is your right. But right after you do so, we'll all get together and see if you should be fired or hung by your heels or any other punishment deemed appropriate by whatever group is most offended. Go Dems!! Go Libs!! Hooray for the PC Police!!

CNN is not a government! Only the government is not allowed to restrict free speach.

I think that is totally ridiculous, this is not a anti-gay statement! In addition, why is it okay for all of America to tease Tim Tebow about his beliefs for Christ but if anyone says anything "anti-gay", which can be anything now, that is intolerable? Shouldn't all people receive the same type of respect?

You're right. I think it's disgusting that Mr. Tebow is mocked because he feels that he should pray and thank God when his prayers are answered.

Great to see the far left getting canned over stupid tweets. They have no problem getting someone on the right fired and don't care. So maybe we will get lucky and more of these IDIOTS of the left will put themselves on the unemployment line.

This is getting very, very scary. First, Koman gives in to protests, and now CNN. I really think GLAAD really stretched on this one - now this man loses his job. It seems like every squeaky wheel out there is getting its way - especially if the wheel is gay. I'm very scared about how much the Constitution is taking a beating. It seems that something is only unconstitutional if a loud minority screams loud enough, but a citizen makes a few comments, his right under the Freedom of Speech, that don't sit well with a small group, and he's fired. Do we have to watch every word that we say in case it insults the gay community? This is pure censorship. GLAAD has proven that they are facist.

I feel this is crazy. No one knows what is appropriate language or not. A big football player in pink is contrued as gay without mentioning the word. Anybody with common sense would know that is slang and did not mean to go out and beat any one. Insteat of LGBT trying to senstivity training with Roland, Roland needs to do some ebonic slang training with them. This is pitiful.

Seems like a lot of people are confusing freedom of speech with business. CNN is a business and they must think suspending Martin will be better for their public image than doing nothing. I'm sure none of the CNN execs were offended by what he said. They're just playing to the population. Unfortunately this says more about our society than it does about CNN.

Like Koman, CNN is setting a very scary precident. If you say anything that even remotely seems like an insult to the gay community, you get in trouble. Only the government can be held accountable for censorship, but if Mr. Martin wants to sue, he has the Constitution on his side.

Absolutely. Such is Martin's right. It doesn't change the fact that CNN acted based on what it thinks is best for the company. Unfortunately such things reflect on the softening of the US as a whole.
