Body found of man suspected of killing mom, kids

Updated at 4:17 p.m., ET: SPOKANE, Wash. -- Authorities in eastern Washington say they have found the body of a 22-year-old fugitive being sought in the killings of a woman and her two young sons.

The body of Dustin W. Gilman was discovered Monday morning in the Wandermere area north of Spokane, The Spokesman-Review reported.  Authorities did not say how Gilman died.

Police say Gilman was wanted in connection with Friday's killing of 32-year-old Tracy Ann Ader and her 8- and 10-year-old sons at their home, where Gilman had been staying as a family friend.

Tracy Ader's husband was in the hospital at the time with a medical condition.

Police say Gilman took off in Ader's 2007 Nissan Pathfinder, which was found Sunday afternoon at a convenience store parking lot in Spokane.

According to the Spokesman-Review, the vehicle was located a few blocks from the home of Gilman’s father, Larry Gilman. Police said a search of the senior Gilman’s residence came up empty.

Larry Gilman said he had been in contact with this son on Saturday. He told investigators that he’d spoken to his son on the telephone and heard a gunshot, according to the Spokesman-Review. Larry Gilman said he believed his son had killed himself.

Police responding to a 911 call about a dead body in a home found three bodies instead.

Dustin Gilman had been living with the Aders at their home for several months, sharing holidays and caring for the boys, the Spokesman-Review reported.

“They were just the sweetest boys ever,” Melody Ponsness, Tracy Ader’s cousin, told the Spokesman-Review. “They always gave you a hug before you had to go back home. It’s hard to find words. It’s just so shocking.”

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

I hope the killer tries to shoot it out with the cops and ends up dead. So tired of the lenient courts in this country.

Once again, no good deed goes unpunished. I hope the cops find this POS and let him escape right into the arms of the husband. Now that would be justice served.

Why is some's sense of justice to be even more heinous and unlawful than the original heinous and unlawful acts . . ?

Why is some's sense of justice to be even more heinous and unlawful than the original heinous and unlawful acts . . ?

Because sometimes a clear message needs to be sent to potential criminals that this behavior will not be tolerated.

patrick - i cant think of anything more heinous than killing innocent children.

so, I cant think of any punishment for someone who could do that....that would be more heinous.

Sinister Phnx....that assumes that the perpetrator of such acts would understand or have the ability to interpret such a clear message and that somehow it would be a deterrent to someone who would do such a thing.....you assume that someone who would do such a thing would in fact have the emotional or intellectual facilities to make that connection.....I suspect that in most cases they would not be thinking "oh I better not do this look what happened to the last guy". Certainly send them directly to hell but do not make a spectacle out of it as you are more likely to get some nut wanting his name in the Media doing the same thing than it actually acting as a deterrent.

Deterrents such as prison work well on the criminal mind but don't work so well on the nut cases or the emotionally unstable who take some insane action on the spur of some delusional moment.

Don't get me wrong....I am for the death penalty and harsh punishment, hard labour etc....I just don't think making a media spectacle out of it is a good idea for deterrent purposes.

Are you two saying it's the cops fault that this scumbag killed these two boys and their Mom? Sounds like you both dropped out of the public school in 7th grade.

Are you two saying it's the cops fault...

Nope. Just that the Spokane cops are not know for using less than lethal force. That's all if they can stay sober and not perform hit & runs then sue the city because the Police Chief won't install a breath analyzer into a Police cruiser

Geesh--read the story, formulate a relevant and civil sentence then submit your comments.

My thoughts and prayers are with the husband/father and the rest of the mom & boys family & friends.

John - unless they were all three trying to kill him, there is no excuse for what he did, and therefore the reason he did it is irrelevant.

I've been on MSNBC long enough to know that when a article needs updating they usually update the original article and don't refresh/ delete the old comments.

It does get confusing with crime stories as it progresses.

It was that they were searching for the man suspected of killing the mother and kids, then it changed to they found his body.

takenaka - I have yet to see anywhere in the media any report as to how the victims were killed, and I have only read that the father of the suspect heard "a gunshot". I have not seen any mention of a handgun, although it certainly could have been, or it could have been a rifle or a shotgun. Since he was going to kill himself, I'm just glad he didn't engage the police in a shootout in which one of them, or an innocent bystander was hit, or by driving the victims' SUV into a vehicle occupied by innocent civilians. It could have been a whole lot worse.

The plot thickens. Also Spokane cops aren't that bad, not trying top bash any precinct- but when I lived in Houston the police where also very notorious for excessive or lethal force. I rather like living in a small town with about 20-30 cops, I volunteer at the station and they're very civil. The captains and chief are very professional.

Well, with the prime suspect dead, let's see where it goes from here.

trust verify - Please reread. What happened was that the police were called to the house because of a report of someone seeing a dead body. When they arrived, they found three bodies, but not the killer. The killer ran away in the victim family's SUV, which was later found at a convenience store near the home of the suspect's father. The next day the father of the suspect received a call from the suspect, during which the suspect's father heard a gunshot. He notified the police, who then found the suspect's body by triangulating on the cell phone to get close, and then using a dog to locate the body. I have yet to read anywhere how the three victims were killed, but lots of folks have contributed lots of conjecture.

better chance????? Dead is DEAD. You would prefer they bleed or suffocate to death? Maybe instead of a gun or knife he could have used a heavy object, say a frying pan or baseball bat? Once the decision was made to kill them the choice of weapon was just what was convenient and efficient.
