Kidnapping survivor Elizabeth Smart gets married in Hawaii

TODAY Show

Elizabeth Smart and Matthew Gilmour. The couple were wed Saturday in Hawaii.

SALT LAKE CITY -- Elizabeth Smart, who was kidnapped at age 14 from her Salt Lake City home and held for what she described as "nine months of hell," married her fiance in Hawaii on Saturday, surrounded by only immediate family.

Smart, 24, and Matthew Gilmour became engaged in January, initially announcing a summer wedding. According to the Smart family spokesperson, NBC station KSL of Salt Lake City reported, those plans changed a week ago in order to avoid attention to the unscheduled ceremony in the Laie Hawaii Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Oahu.

The couple and family were celebrating with a private reception and luau, after which Smart and Gilmour were leaving for an extended honeymoon, KSL said.

"Elizabeth is grateful to be celebrating her special day with those closest to her without distraction," family spokesman Chris Thomas said. "Her wedding further demonstrates it is possible to rise above challenging circumstance to lead a happy and productive life."

At age 14, Smart was kidnapped at knifepoint in June 2002 from her parents' home by Brian David Mitchell.

Smart was held captive and sexually abused and forced to wander with her captor from town to town for nine months. In March 2003, Smart was rescued when passersby spotted her with Mitchell and his wife, Wanda Barzee, in a Salt Lake suburb.

Smart testified against Mitchell, who was convicted of kidnapping and rape in 2010 by the U.S. District Court. He is serving a life sentence and Barzee is serving 15 years in federal prison.

Smart is an activist for children who suffer abuse and has formed a foundation on their behalf. She has worked as a commentator for ABC News.

Gilmour is from Scotland. The two apparently met while Smart was serving an LDS mission in France last year. People Magazine reported the couple will return to Salt Lake City to live.

This article includes reporting by NBC station KSL of Salt Lake City, msnbc.com staff and Reuters.

@hek-talk about talking out of your a**.

I consider myself liberal, and happened to be a victim of kidnapping and sexual assault at age 6.I never received counseling, and though it left me scarred for life-I have not allowed them to define WHO I am-so no you idiot,I was not destroyed by it.

Please take your political BS some where else next time, instead of backhandedly insulting women of assault,kidnapping,abuse,and/or torture-of all types.

Hek211 is nuts. Many people that suffered at least the sexual abuse part rose above it, a few that were kidnapped did too. My heart was singing when I recognized that she would get the help as understanding to get through and over this. What a heart warming happy ending and politics have nothing to do with it.

I am a liberal feminist who has risen above circumstances that I am sure would have destroyed hek.

People with his agenda who can't resist taking a slap are weaklings, cowards, and bullies. This particular bully needs some remedial courses in spelling and composition.

Congratulations Elizabeth. Now I would like to see a similar story about Jaycee Dugard who was kidnapped at age 11 and kept as a sex slave for 18 years. Both are strong women who were terribly abused by men with female accomplices.

As a conservative person, hek211's comments are about as "conservative" as Jarred Laughtner's shooting of Rep. Giffords....which is to say, they're not. They're the comments of a social deviant, not a conservative.

As someone who's been married for 23 years, I was struck by how young they both look in the picture. I hope these kids find happiness in marriage and a life together.

My very best wishes for Elizabeth and her new husband. She is one brave woman!

We might want to remember how her kidnapper was able to take her into town unrecognized--all covered up in garb that his "religion" allowed him to use to subjugate females.

Less religious tolerance is sometimes a good thing.

First I would just like to say to Elizabeth, God bless you and may your life be full of joy and happiness.

Second, this woman or shall I say child went through something many of our posters cant even fathom. To point fingers at religion, family or politics is just insane. Some have even gone so far as to say it must be Obama's fault. Really... Please think before you post all the hate, think about the subject for just a moment. A beautiful, intelligent women who went through hell as a child and will always have these demons in her life no matter what she does in life. She deserves our blessings on this special day. It has nothing to do with religion or politics. BTW yes I am liberal but wish all could just tone it down a notch.

Elizabeth Smart and her family became unwanted public figures when she was kidnapped. They didn't ask for or seek out celebrity. Their pain and agony was palpable. Anything this remarkable young woman does will, for many years, attract our attention. And I hope and pray that people will have the common decency to wish her and her family the same good luck, good health and success they would wish for their own loved ones.

Who knows, perhaps this young woman will be able to embrace her unsought after fame and do something positive that changes the world for the better. Or perhaps she will simply continue to be a good person who treats others with respect and decency. Either way, I wish Elizabeth and her family peace and happiness.

What has Elizabeth Smart done since her ordeal? She has SURVIVED! And that she has seemingly been able to do so with grace is nothing short of remarkable. For all those who have also survived such ordeals, you have my respect....for what that's worth.......Peace

So Im figuring we will be hearing another update about Elizabeth in a month or 2 to say she is pregnant (as per LDS tradition), and then again in 9 months to say she is giving birth. Am I the only person in Utah (or America for that matter) that is sick of hearing about her every milestone in life. I thought thats what Facebook and Twitter are for (of which I subscribe to neither).

Congratulations to Elizabeth, and her wonderful, happy husband.

Having great family support, and intelligence, Elizabeth's family knew how to handle the horrific event with their daughter. Elizabeth's parents have, and are, great role models for being parents as well. Strength and a strong love for their family.

poor hek,

unfortunately his ilk has become the voice of the right wing. I remember Newt Gingrich blaming the sociopath Susan Smith as one of the liberal, feminists a few years ago, but that's the m.o. Blame all the ills on whoever is feminist or liberal and praise everything good as conservative or evangelical. It doesn't matter if they are caring human beings or what diverse opinion they share, because different is bad. It's kind of like the morality police in muslim countries. Just as mysoginistic as possible, with a judgements on everything.

I fear for Ms. Smart if she does or says something independent. hek will comment on her "ghastly" faith at that time and blame it on that as unChristian or something...or worse, liberal or feminist.

I'm happy to hear this young woman is now free and able to move on with her life in a constructive way, despite a horrible experience. Unfortunately, I'm also a bit saddened that she faces profound sexual discrimination in her marriage because of her religion. I am personal friends with several (ex)Mormons and they all assure me that institutional sexism is the rule in the LDS church. In fact, opposing the husband is tantamount to blasphemy in the doctrine.

Hopefully she will escape this new form of psychological abuse as well.

And the key to that happy ending, let's not forget: wonderful, supportive parents who raised her with the unconditional love to be strong and secure, and who doggedly searched for her, celebrated her home with joyful open arms and did everything they could to restore any loss of self-esteem she might otherwise have suffered. And of course her little sister who gave them the key to finding her. Gotta love a family like that.

Susie: Do I understand the Mormon religion? Well, I've read the book of Mormon, visited a few temples and read the literature provided to me by those temples. I've also read Krakauer's "Under the Banner of Heaven" which details the genesis and violent evolution of the early church. So I feel as though my grip on the Mormon tenants is firm. But if by "understand", you mean "believe" then, no. But feel free to explain what I am missing. I'll listen. And I agree that Mormonism is no "worse" than other systems of belief that look to eradicate the will and leave it's believers trapped in the paradoxical position of willing the will to not will.

Gotta admire any religion who's motto is "I don't care how many you bring, just Bring 'em Young!"

You know why you always take two mormons with you when you go fishing? Cause if you take just one, he'll drink all your beer!

It's a bad pun. Bringham Young is one of the founders of Mormonism.

Status-Unknown ... good idea. Do it the mormon way: make up a completely rediculous story that's crazy enough to be insulting to anyone with an IQ over 65, and tell people they are going to hell unless they give you all their money.

I'm pretty sure you're too afraid to actually do that..for ignorant people, it's more fun to just throw unintelligent falsehood out and hope no one notices you don't know anything about what you're saying...

I remember when she was kidnapped, and the stunning news nine months later that she was still alive. This young woman deserves all the happiness in the world. Best wishes and congratulations to the newlyweds!

Though the tone of the post was a little harsh, I'm kind of thinking the same. Yesterday, the entire banner of the MSNBC website was filled with this story and a smaller sidebar about Whitney Houston.

With all the things going - potential conflict with Iran, a presidential election, the European economic union struggling to hold together, rising oil costs, etc., etc., I just can't imagine Walter opening with these two stories. Our media has slumped into tabloid stories and celebrity worship, because that's what sells (to us). We're just not a serious nation anymore.

That said, I certainly don't mean any ill will toward this girl. I'm just saying that her story might not be the biggest news of the day.

It's definitely a story, and how big or small it is..... well, I'm not in the profession to judge how they should display it exactly correct and right size - but I'm sure that like most things human they will never get it completely right...

but the basic ideas of why it's a story is 1. the ordeal she went through was totally horrible which scarred a time in life in which all should be able to be safe, normal and preferably happy...

                        2. because she represents a victory of sorts for many people who had their childhood taken from them and utterly destroyed by trauma ... by her able to do any normal thing with an attempt to live out her version of a normal life, trying to be happy, and good in the community we all share (one way or another we are all members of this world community and have to struggle with the hard parts of life and find a way to make it through with respect and dignity for everyone... )

                        3. the public is always saying the media gives them nothing but "BAD" news... things that add to their sad life and make like an assault on each one of their senses and don't let up until depression sets in... well they give you a positive story here and what do the people say??? where is the bad news, tell us about the important evil things in the world, the new drumbeat to the next dumb useless war, tell us another depressing tale first (like I cant take a full page of happiness)... well anyway those are some of the reasons I can see

I think this is news because it says something to all the societies that believes that rape victims should be killed:

"Look--the dishonor is not with the victim nor her family."

And it also, I think it gives a happy ending to many others who were raped and had to keep it a secret or who were treated like dirt for reporting it, that the Dark Ages of Shame are officially over.

And now may they live quietly and happily for the rest of their lives together.

Voted for McCain::: This is good news because this is a case where he didn't steal her away from a husband as McCain did.

It's about time we read some good news. I was getting sick and tired of hearing Whitney and her drug habit, Bouncy (or whatever the broad's name is) and her baby.

                            #25.6 - Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:45 PM EST

Exactly. Why is this news? Yes, she was kidnapped, abused for nine months, and I can only imagine how horrible it was. But, is there not a time when you just leave people alone? I can understand updating the local community where the person(s) lived, but the entire world as if they just found the cure for cancer?

I DO wish every happiness to Elizabeth and husband, but if there is going to be a NEWS article it should include NEWS.

If you need help with articles just ask. :)

@Big Trouble...read the thread...voted_for_mccain is the one who said "Why is this news"...KLL123 was responding ....it doesn;t have to be bad to be news...news can be good too. Don't be in such a hurry to bash people.

@Strumley...have to admit...I'm sick of all the Whitney hoohaw too...I don't know what's wrong with our world...a crack-head gets a glamorous send off...and MJ...have you ever seen such a dog and pony show for any other child molester. In my city, a man was hit and killed while riding his bike...he leaves behind a wife and two young kids...no big fan fare for a normal, law abiding Joe Schmoo...pretty f'ed up huh?

I wish nothing but the best for Elizabeth and her husband. She is truly a hero for taking control of her life and not letting that scumbag's kidnap and torture to keep her from living!!

This is a great story, understated and class. I wish happiness for both of them. She was able to over come a horrid event in her life.

Those nasty remarks by some are just crazies trying to be funny. It seem there are many out there that think it is ok to tear some one down. Thankful the young couple will be away on their honeymoon and by the time they return, the creeps will have crawled back under some rock where they belong.
