11 children, some tied to beds, removed from Texas home

Eleven children, some of whom police say were tied to a bed, are removed from a Dayton, Texas, home north of of Houston where at least 21 people were discovered living. KPRC's Ryan Korsgard reports.

DAYTON, Texas -- Authorities said Tuesday they removed 11 children from a crowded home used as an address by a registered sex offender after they found eight confined in a small, dark bedroom with restraints tying some to their beds.

Along with the children, 10 adults were living in the one-story, 1,700-square-foot brick home in Dayton, about 30 miles northeast of Houston, Child Protective Services spokeswoman Gwen Carter said. One month after a raid on the house, authorities are still trying to determine how the children are related and why they were there, she said.

The children, belonging to seven separate families, ranged in age from 5 months to 11 years, said NBC station KPRC of Houston.

Three who were age 5 or older had not been enrolled in school, Carter said.

The children were removed after authorities found two 2-year-old children tied to a bed during a January visit to the home, according to a court document.

A legally blind, 5-year-old girl "was in a restraint on a filthy mattress, and appeared to be in a daze," the document said. One child had a black eye and knocked-out tooth.

The adults told investigators they tied the children when they slept or took a nap during the day "for safety," the document said. An investigator noted that none of the adults said they saw anything wrong with the arrangement.

Two of the children had what authorities feared was pneumonia and were taken to a children's hospital. All have since been placed in foster homes, Carter said.

The case is still under investigation, and Dayton Police Sgt. Doug O'Quinn said officials are looking into criminal charges. Liberty County District Attorney Mike Little said his office would present a case to a grand jury next month, but he declined to discuss possible suspects or charges.

"Our primary concern was to make sure that the children were stable and safe," Carter said.

The next custody hearing in this case is scheduled for March 9, KPRC said.

The home with a "No Trespassing" sign out front is in a subdivision near land used for farming and ranching. A tricycle and other toys were in the backyard Tuesday, and several cars were parked outside.

People leaving the home declined to talk to media assembled outside, and other residents and their relatives declined to comment or didn't respond to phone messages.

One person in Texas' online sex offender registry listed the house as his address. Mark E. Marsh III was convicted in Michigan 15 years ago of criminal sexual conduct with a 15-year-old girl. He did not have a working phone number listed.

Neighbor Wayne Hardin said he never saw the youngest children and had no idea so many people were living in the house. Though he often saw eight or more cars parked outside, Hardin said he was told the residents had a big family.

"I was shocked," said Hardin, who had called police about loud music blaring from the house. "We didn't have a clue."

Douglas Waller said he saw nothing unusual at the home a few days before Christmas when he visited briefly with a 4-year-old girl who he believes is his daughter, the Houston Chronicle reported. The 33-year-old is petitioning the court for custody of the child.

"She looked all right. She looked healthy and happy," he said, but he changed his mind after the girl was removed from the home.

"After reading the papers I've received from the courts, I would not trust them with an animal -- much less a child," he said. "I had no idea of the stuff that was going on at the house."

Along with the children, two teenage runaways with a stolen car were at the home, authorities said. The boys, both 16, admitted running away from foster homes, smoking marijuana and driving a car they knew was stolen, authorities said.

Carter said the home was not registered as a foster home or day care.

Hope they never get the kids back!! Really? There is not a severe enough punishment imaginable for animals that treat children this way.

Another reason why neighbors need to be aware of what's going on in their area. There is no honor in ignoring the aberrant or dangerous behavior of neighbors. If children are involved, call the authorities immediately and let them sort things out. An anonymous tip can do the trick.

Saying they saw nothing wrong with the arrangement was probably their way of covering their butts so they could use the insanity plea later. Thats the ONLY way I could ever imagine someone thinking this way of living is acceptable. They have to be bat sh*t crazy!

Texas is taking over as the Florida of the U.S. - lots of weirdness. I think people have bought on to the idea that you can do anything you want here, that we are tolerant of whatever. but, that only applies to pollution, fracking, dumping, anything along those lines. I can't wait to move away from here and i was born here, sad to say!

Now, let's get all the Polly Professionals involved. Bring these families together. Have the adults take parenting classes then supervised visits. Oh, tie the children up in the Family Court system. Keeping them from loving families that would adopt every one. The adults should loose their parental rights no question. Siblings should remain together. Every child living in that nightmare should be allowed a loving adoptive family. Not in 6 months. Not in 2 months. Now. Let the family courts get their heads out of the clouds and for once do what is right. CHILD CENTERED. THINK ABOUT IT.

After reading most of the posts on this article im glad most of these people are not involved in law enforcement they would have probably killed everyone in the house before they even know what the hell is going on. Not that I am defending any of whats going on but everyone is jumping to conclusions without having any information besides whats in the article which offers hardly anything. Obviously the cops in Texas which I have to salute(an i dont care for cops much) for actually not losing control and actually want to investigate what the hell is going on before they take action. People wondering why 10 adults are living in one house. explanation : when people are poor they tend to gather and live together just look at the little shack town forming up in california outside fresno. In my city alone in california there are apartments where multiple families live in and the places are small as hell. Thats what poverty equals out too but i guess everyone typing here is fortunate enough to have a little money. The kid with the black eye and knocked out tooth everyone is assuming an adult did it which is fine but its an assumption it could easily have been a fight between the kids. I dont know and the article doesnt say. Kids being sick(pneumonia also an assumption by authorities) its sad but in poverty people walking around with sickness is very common get out of your bubble and look at the world and you will see everywhere there is poverty people are sick and dying and there isnt a damn thing they can do about it because they have no money. Kids being tied to beds yes thats bad thats why the cops took them away and took the sick kids to the hospital which is also honorable but also if the kids are fighting which could be a case maybe that is the safety they are talking about im not sure neither are cops thats why its being investigated. Everyone jumping to conclusions also about kid sex stuff since it seems the people are mostly related in the house i doubt they would be having sex with thier kids if they are just poor people living in poverty doesnt make them pedos. You are assuming they are all pedos because it mentions some guys name on the lease is a registered sex offender but in the article it also doesnt say he is living there or that he was arrested. The house on the outside is actually not bad looking which makes me think they arent as dead beat as the article is making them out to be. For two 16 year old runaway boys from foster homes living there almost suggests to me they could have run away from bad places and actually had it a little better off there why else would they still live there if they have a car they can leave. Really is a weird story just glad the cops involved in this case are smarter then 90% of the posters on this board.(which is surprising) The sad thing is this is just the beginning of what is to be the average of America in the future welcome to the United States Of Big Buisness where people and workers are worthless in the 1% and our leaders eyes. sorry about no paragraphs and my book lol

Gamer, I agree with you some what, but kids tied to a bed post. Really? I can relate to a large family living together, but the child neglect and abuse is not apart of large families, in fact its the opposite as there are many hands in raising and caring for the kids.

Gamer - Did you read the part about the kids being tied to filthy beds and that some of the children had pneumonia? If you've ever had pneumonia, you'd know that one of the things that the doctor tells you to roll from one side to the other frequently while lying down so that the sputum doesn't pool in one side of the chest. Restraining those kids could have eventually killed them.

#1.20 - Tue Feb 21, 2012 7:34 PM EST

punisher an crying shame yes i read those parts but being tied to a bed is really random since i see no pictures of how they were tied of course it could be tied crazily tied down cant move but for some reason im thinking it was like one of those kid leashes I have seen on tv where you can move around but you are tied to your mom. But at the same time I dont know since its not enough detail to how they were tied in the article. To the part about filthy beds that just supports that they are poor and cant afford brand new mattresses which is pretty common in poverty stricken areas and even worse in high poverty areas where people sleep in the dirt and ground. If they were tied loosly they can still move around and I'm not sure how many were tied because it doesnt say exactly but it does say the blind girl was tied for sure and that she was dazed which would make sense if no one is watching over her while they slept for her to be detained in a way and if she was sick then yes she would be dazed. Just because a family is large doesnt guarantee you will have all family members helping everyone out like the duggars. Im not standing up for the people but i wont demonize them without knowing the situation I can only guess at what is going on like most of these posters. There is obviously a reason the cops didnt arrest everyone in the house thats why i said what i did. I could be fully wrong and the craziest theories in these posts could end up being true but thats why the cops will investigate it.

Gamer4life, I think it's always nice not to jump to conclusions, but this article is pretty bad. Another kid could have caused a black eye and knocked out tooth, but I don't think its likely. You have to pack a pretty significant punch to blacken an eye. How could a fight between two kids get that bad, no supervision, maybe?

Eight kids in one dark bedroom, a legally blind boy in a daze on a filthy mattress, school-age kids not enrolled in school (home-schooling, perhaps?), kids sick with pneumonia, I'm finding it hard to give them the benefit of the doubt.

Tyng kids in bed is never ok, and usually indicates those in charge did not want to be bothered at all. Can you imagine a fire? Everyone scrambling around to get these poor kids untied. As far as the statement about 10 adults living there, you said maybe they are poor, unable to afford anything else. This goes far beyond poverty. Many people are poor and live in cramped quarters, BUT THEY DON'T TIE THEIR KIDS UP!

It's a horrible situation, from the guy who assumed a four year old girl he visited was his (what!), to a registered sex offender possibly living there. I hope sexual abuse isn't in this mix, but I'm doubtful. These poor children, no one should have to grow up in such neglect and with such cruel indifference from those in charge.

Kat, People might not tie their kids up but they put their kids in their room(a box) when they are bad. Which usually people with money the kid probably has their own room(box) so they are seperated from everyone else. Which is similiar but not exactly the same thing. If the kids are fighting that could be one way to keep them seperated in a small space where seperation is hard to do. Of course the situation is bad im not saying it isnt I'm just assuming there is a reason why the cops didnt arrest everyone if the situation is so bad and they were all commiting hardcore criminal acts. I think you would be surprised at how easily humans bruise and can lose teeth when i was like 4 years old my dad said i kicked my uncles foot and broke his toe, which i cant even remember doing, and i still have a hard time believing but he says its true. But also as a kid i was very active and always had bruises and cuts from being active and the scars to prove it doing kid stuff. My friends kid fell in the living room and cracked her head open on a table, his son also was running by the campfire and fell into it and burned his arm. so just because a kid gets injured doesnt mean it was always from an adult. 8 kids in one room sounds bad but if the house has 4 rooms and 10 adults and some teens the kids are taking up one room how much space is really left for 10 full sized people. Thats the crazy part also the guy who visits and everything seems fine makes me think the reporters actually put some support of the people not being crazy hardcore criminals. Ya its a bad situation and i feel bad for the kids but I'm not going to scream kill them all without knowing for sure what the hell is going on.

lifer~ 21 people in a 1700 sq. ft. house is not feasible. Having a registered sex offender in a house with 11 children is not good. Keeping children in "boxes" is not a good thing. There is way to much wrong written all over this.

        #1.32 - Wed Feb 22, 2012 1:38 AM EST

Yep birthcontrol should be outlawed. Let people just keep popping them out like peas. Hey you can either farm out the kids to pedofiles and to the sex trade.

What do they need to go to school for, when you can say you home school, thus folks do not have to see the condition of the despair of the children. Perhaps one or all of the adults were either a tutor or all were tutors....

Nice give them black eyes, knock their teeth out, let them lie dying of pneumonia with no medical help. Better yet tie them up and brutalize them so they do not run away and smoke maryj to numb the misery the are experiencing.

Wonderful to live in an filthy overcrowded house, that sort of closeness has it rewards. So what if you have a registered pedophile listing the house as his address. Those kids kept the other kids in the neighborhood safe.... see some good came out of the arrangement. hmmm

There is always a bright spot to the day.... sorry about that, but can't help feeling that one should find some cost effective good in a situation... gotta give the props and all that...

So those nambypamby do gooder liberals will just want them to have education, and a safe environment and all that sort of good stuff, and that they should not have because they are probably poor anyway, thus why change their lot. See they were in a family home after all...

There is nothing wrong in having a whole parcel of kids living in orphanages working for their keep wearing hand me down clothes anyway a la Gingrich. Perhaps when they get well they can apprentice to the janitor at the school they may now get to attend.

Yeah bring back the work houses, the poor houses and the stocks. Lets go back to the days of slavery, at least those kids had adult males and females in the house who can be parents to them.... even it maybe that these are not even their kids. Bachmann would be proud to know these kids had adults in the house... forming a family bond and all that.... Seem like they were not attending school so the t'publicons should give the adults in the house kudos for getting it that education is not necessary early...

This was just another type of all day care center, or the new style orphanage a la house of horror. Perhaps this is actually the new reality show 'children in the attic' or children in a sty thing. Child style reality show..... Survival house of horror.....

They do say that everything is bigger in Texas.... So not surprised at the amount of children impacted at one time, experiencing the same horror and abuse... everything happens in a big way there...

Good catch by someone though and good move to remove the children from the house so quickly.

Hearty thank you and bless you to whomever reported the horror and to the authorities who responded and rescued these children. (where did that thought come from... get thee behind me empathy, gratitude)

Makes one wonder how many more children are going through this sort of horror elsewhere in this country? Well, more fodder in the pipeline for those private jails and prisons... so there is that. Still can make some money off others misery... V capitalist of moi, isn't it.. Yeah. Always have to find the opportunity to make some money, by any means possible. May not be very christian.. but hey filthy lucre is filthy lucre... give 10% to church and all is well, now clean lucre.

Read recently that homelessness is on the rise... not surprised about that... after all with the banks taking peoples homes through any means possible even if they do not have clear deed or title.... and may not even have a right to the home in the first place...

There is so much horror happening in this country even while some folks think it is a good idea to go start another war so we can then get busy rebuilding that other countries infrastructure overseas afterwards....while ours people and infrastructure fall apart at the seams. On the other hand living under a bridge is quite a lot of fun. Really. So close to nature. A box in the park is like living in a lowrise. A tent hey that is penthouse living. In a car? Ah yeah nothing like mobile living...

Well this is a leap year..... we have an extra day to mete out even more horror on each other....

        What bliss.....

        Dam .... but still.... sigh.

justhefax... That's typical rhetoric from whackjob dummies who try to make everything political. If it's any consolation, here are a couple of tips for dealing with them (or not):

            1. Do not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience. 2. Don't wrestle with pigs. Everybody gets dirty and the pig loves it.

            Here's one from the dictionary:

Conservative: adj. 1. Favoring preservation of the existing order. 2. Moderate; cautious. 3. Traditional

Liberal: adj. 1. Favoring individual freedom and nonrevolutionary reform. 2. Broad-minded or tolerant. 3.Generous; bountiful. Must be the "broadminded, generous parts that get to them, eh?

this is texas. they will give them every chance in the world to get the kids back and even pay the parents to take their individual kids to a home and observe them and see if they are fit. I'm serious they will PAY THEM to do this in a home . If they do not meet the standards , they will pay them to do it again. They do the same thing down there for kids born with addiction. that state is so crazy. and most people that live there don't even understand things that happen there.

Lots of children in a home that is small, I am guessing none of the children went to school and it is an address of a sex offender? I am guessing also that the neighbors were alerted to the sex offender via the info card, saw a child and alerted the authorities. I wonder if these folks are related. Curious to see. This doesn't surprise me at all anymore. Most of these type of crimes are done by relatives of the victims.

The register sex offender had nothing to do with this. He had lived there at one time. That was his only tie. This is a very misleading article. The press just can't let this rest. If they can in any way tie an RSO to any kind of abuse they will. These people are sick and need help and so do the kids, but we need to leave the innocent out of it.

That is what I was thinking. Only we could use the word "charges" in another meaning. A little lube and a stick of dynamite would do the trick.

Excute immediately? Yes, but first, horse whip publicly. How can this occur in my country? We're not a third world country where the rule of law is unknown; we're not an uneducated country, we're not ruled by some odd religious cultish religion - we are a nation of laws, regulations, how can this happen in my country? Did not the neighbors, who should be looking out for each other, notice anything odd? How can my country, the gold standard of ethical treatment have sunk to this point? It is to weep.

I'll tell you how this can happen in the United States of America...because women and children are considered chattle, and as chattle they can be treated any way the men feel is right. Some men feel entitled to whatever they want, and damn anyone who trys to stop them. In a country riddled with illegal and prescription drug use, alcoholism, sexual fetishes, thievery (blue & white collar), ponzy and other financial schemes, what else can be expected of people with no moral compass.

Until we as a nation stop spouting lip service and start standing up for the rights and protection of women and children, I predict much worse in our future.

Carri, you should seek immediate psychiatric help. Commit yourself to an asylum. When they ask you why you're there tell them you believe that 'people think'. You'll be there a long time.

Don't believe me, go track down your local cop, social service worker, or public school teacher and ask them.

                      John,

I hear you my friend. When I was younger and not yet married or a father, I used to think that "freedom" and being born and raised here in our beautiful country was so amazing. I used to assume that everyone wanted our lifestyle of free speech, etc. I only saw the positive.

Now as an active duty US Marine, and a father of 4, I've seen other parts of the world and I'm concerned about the USA my kids are growing up in. Don't get me wrong - we still have a lot of good things in this country - and it is one of the best on earth to live in; period. But what we are desperately missing is accountability. These things happen in other countries too - but I wonder if it is more widespread here in the USA. The reason is that we have too much freedom and no accountability.

                      God help us all!

You will be reading more of these stories if Republicans get into power again. They want the govt out of everybody's life. Even little tiny defenseless children. You know, those little children should get jobs and fend for themselves! Back to the workhouses! No regulations to protect you! No regulations that protect the food you eat or the air you breathe!

                        Signed, Your Republican Representative.

I'd like to know if this house was owned by any of these morons or was it a rental home. If there are 21 people living in that house, why were they saying they tied these kids for safety reasons. Are you kidding me! These kids don't belong in that type of environment, full of sleazy sex-offender, run away teens, stolen car outside and all the other mess. I bet if they check further, they'd find most abusing the welfare system and on food stamps. Either these people start talking as to who, what and when, or throw them all in jail.

Is there more info as to what these people do for a living, what are their names, etc. listed in another news article?

Yes, and if Republicans gain any more ground, you will have NO recourse to protect these children. The far right Republican wants to dismantle all government operations that would protect tiny defenseless children and disabled adults. You hear Ron Paul every day talking about how government not regulate industry. Well, industry includes childbirth, child labor, etc. So, no prenatal care, no regulations protecting children, no child welfare laws (you can put em to work doing any damn thing from as early as they can walk...make the little curtain crawlers earn their keep, for Pete's sake!), no abortion if that labor resource of yours happens to get raped and pregnant at age 12, let's see, have I left any atrocity out?

Most sociopaths and psychopaths are created. If someone had been involved in those murderers' lives early on, maybe they would not have murdered. Want to save innocents? Invest in early childhood development and early childhood intervention in the case of unprepared parents. What is so difficult about that? You willingly pay the clean up costs. Authorities said Tuesday they removed 11 children from a crowded home used as an address by a registered sex offender after they found eight confined in a small, dark bedroom with restraints tying some to their beds.

you took the words right out of my mouth. This crazy happens because no one has mental help when they need it. mostly uninsured or underinsured. not sure in that state, but we are only to legally hold a mental pt. for 72 hours, then it's see you later, don't do anything crazy because we can't treat you without insurance. so, unfortunately, we will be hearing alot more about this crap.

Even the people with good access to mental health services don't utilize it like they should. I've worked with quite a few people who have very serious mental health issues and those folks just stop taking their medications or don't bother to go to their shrinks regularly because they don't feel like it.

The reason we don't have enough mental health services is because we don't have any mental disease cures. Asking people to drug themselves into oblivion for the rest of their lives just isn't rational. Sometimes its better if Darwin wins.

Something I'm still trying to understand and get my head around - why the hell were the children there in the first place? I'm confused...the article says a guy visited with a 4 year old he thought was his daughter - why was he visiting? Did he think it was a day-care or something? Did he bother to do any research at all on the facility or the inhabitants?

As a father of 4, I just don't get this story. I am bewildered and confused as to how the hell any parent could just drop their kid off at some house full of kids - and not think to do any research or find out what the hell is going on there!

Please tell me I'm not the only one!

The man who 'suspects' he is the father said everything appeared 'normal'. It appears that all of the occupants aided and abetted one another, so my guess is everyone left during the child visits.

Yes - this visiting man who 'suspects' that the four year old is his... It would seem that the majority of the 11 or 12 adults would have not been there during this visit for him to think the place "normal" - needless to say, all those kids running around. I can't imagine these kids looking well cared for or behaving normally socially when some of them (how many) hadn't even been registered in school?

Maybe this guy just knows zero about kids and "normal" environments. If the beds were filthy - wouldn't the rest of the place be filthy too? Maybe they were all on drugs.

I'm with you Optimal Thinker - where did this guy think he was visiting and why was he there? It doesn't make sense at all that he didn't see even one strange thing.

Well let me begin with saying, this is a tragic story. The children are being mistreated.. normal, loving, caring adults do not tie children up under any circumstance. Hopefully, justice will be quickly served and the punishment fitting of the crimes. Level of income doesn't have anything to do with this story. Families in third world countries with no resources have been shown to take better care of their children.

'"The adults told investigators they tied the children when they slept or took a nap during the day "for safety," the document said. An investigator noted that none of the adults said they saw anything wrong with the arrangement."' Really? Alrighty then: why are the adults napping during the day? Not one of them has a job? How are they living? Why were these kids not in school? If neighbors knew there were school age children living there, didn't anybody notice that they were not going to school? I could go on, but I'm sure you all get my point. These "adults" need to be held accountable for the mistreatment of these children.

This should be a wake up call to other neighbors in all communities: pay attention to what's happening right in your backyard. You could possibly help save a life or 11. Everytime I read about stuff like this, it sickens me and makes me wonder what the Almighty is waiting for: Just flush already, Lord. Just flush.

I hate to say this, but unfortunately it doesn't surprise me about the quantity of people or the tying to beds of the children. What does surprise me, is there is no mention of drugs, other than the two runaways admitting to marijuana, that Texas law enforcement didn't arrest the adults on the spot, that a man actually listed this address when registering as a sex offender and no official came out to inspect it, that the other adults weren't hesitant to allow runaways and a sex offender on the premises. It sounds like a typical meth house, where children are commonly neglected and/or abused, and in worse case scenarios, used sexually in drug fueled rages by multiple people. If I was a neighbor, especially the one who called and reported loud music, I would have reported the unusual activity and quantity of traffic, before this.

I am curious as well, why wasn't the sex offender arrested for being around minors? or was his name just on the agreement? need more details. this makes no sense.

I am curious as to why if they found kids tied to the bed in January. Why did it take so long to go back and removed them? Did I miss something?

Texas seems to have the most bizarre newsfeed in the country.

It's because in Texas the very people put in place to protect children are not doing their jobs. Judge's and CPS both are corrupt here. Dallas County has some of the most awful family court judges. They routinely give children to abusive parents for no apparent reason other than they can. It's sad state of affairs at least in Dallas County.

This stuff happens in every single state in the good old U S of A unfortunately - when it happens in a Southern State, someone just likes to use that old Northern prejudice that insinuates that Southern folks aren't quite as civilized as everyone else. This is certainly not the case.

Do a search on the actual statistics on child sexual abuse. Texas is not even in the Top 10. You'll be surprised which State's are! It means more if you actually find the information for yourself. It is shocking to look at the numbers, see the personal stories and perhaps it will inspire you check out some of the opportunities to give or better yet, volunteer your time for these victims rather than point fingers at one state or the other.

The International Statistics are even more shocking.

Gloria, please do not speculate on the sexual abuse. These children ranged in age, and I am sure they will be given full medical evaluations, and psychological. Considering the need to gather evidence it is understandable that they won't release details on the issue of sexual abuse until the adults are in custody so they can obtain DNA samples. I don't doubt that ther was abuse, but the extent of it remains to be seen. I also wonder about the breakdown of female/male adults and children. The reporting on this is most likely minimal at this point in an effort to protect the children. Since the police didn't arrest the adults on the spot, one could assume there was no obvious signs of sexual abuse (ie.bloodsatined panties, child pornography, etc.)
