State trooper shot dead near Bremerton, Wash.

BREMERTON, Wash. -- A Washington state trooper was found shot to death following a traffic stop early Thursday.

State Patrol spokesman Monte Simpson said the shooting occurred just outside the Kitsap County town of Gorst, about 10 miles southwest of Bremerton, shortly before 1 a.m. local time (4 a.m. ET).

He said the suspect was still at large.

There was no suggestion of a connection, but on Wednesday in Bremerton an 8-year-old girl was critically wounded by a gunshot.

8-year-old girl critically wounded in Wash. school shooting

Armin Jahr Elementary School was just letting out for the day when the victim was shot at about 1:29 p.m. local time (4:29 p.m. ET), Bremerton police said.

A Bremerton Police Department statement said a student had a firearm in his backpack that apparently discharged, striking the victim. Detectives believe the shooting was an accident, the statement said.

William just how plausible do think it is for an elementary school student to be out driving early in the morning? :

". . . .shot to death following a traffic stop. . . . early Thursday. . . a student had a firearm in his backpack that apparently discharged, striking the victim. "

Or could it be that you don't bother reading articles, just go on a rant?

Could be he is a distraught relative of the victim, or worse ,it may have been the person who allowed the child who had the gun access to the weapon. All speculative.

I know the connection between the two stories. They both had very little info to present and BSNBC has an agenda against guns. They might as well try to stir up some hatred and discontent by trying to connect the completely unrelated articles.

More breaking news - Marines dies in helicopter crashes and a policeman was shot. Details are sketchy and while we don't know of any direct relationship - people are dead.

I grew up in Texas and I'm over 60 years old. I own 3 pistols and 4 long guns. I am not anti-gun. But in my day, a man didn't carry a gun to town unless he was intending to shoot someone. People did not "carry" guns to prove manhood, to prove they could, and to just prove. A gun is a tool ... no more and no less. And every fool knows you don't use any tool you don't know how to use and accept the responsibility of using. No kid needs to carry a loaded gun in his/her backpack. NO KID. And sadly, there will be policemen and policewomen killed by someone who thinks they have a reason to.

There is a connection, yes. A gun. And as an old person who remembers different times and different values, I am appalled at the casual acquisition and carrying of a gun. It's not a fashion statement.

littleoldlady3A gun is a tool ... no more and no less.

You are exactly right! The system is screwed up and added gun control will not solve the problem. Actually the concealed carry permit is a good thing because the bad guy don't know who is packing and who isn't. I carry but not all the time, the fact that people know I have permit to carry they assume, I am. (Those that know me).

It is much, much easier to procure a firearm illegally than it is legally. Who do you think will have those weapons, the good guys? There are 2 Political people out there that probably wish that they or someone around them was carrying the the outcome of their tragedies may have been much different.

Gabby Giffords, Democrat and Suzanna Hupp, Libertarian (lost her parents in the Lubys' massacre in Killeen, Texas). I don't know what Ms. Giffords stand is now, but I would assume she would want all guns rounded up and destroyed, as most liberals do. Ms. Hupp was instrumental in the concealed carry legislation. I'm with Suzanna!

WilliamOfRitesDo you boast about your cordless drill???

As a matter of fact, I do. Life is so much simpler without have to drag the old cord around. Have you tried the cordless impact tool? I don't know how I went so long without one, they are great.

I think part of the problem is respect is not taught anymore. Parents don't have to parent they think it is somebody elses responsibility to teach their children. We live in an "it's not my fault" society. It's always someone elses fault. Poor little Johnnny had a bad home life, he was abused. Our CPS removes the children from the home only to give them back to the abusive home at a later time. People are afraid to speak up when they know abuse is going on. Some parents don't punish their children and the children rule the home. We have too many people on welfare, too many uneducated people and the cycle keeps on going. A lot of our privileged kids are spoiled rotten brats and their parents want to be the "cool" parents, their child's best friend. I can remember one time when my son told me he hated me, I told him I was sorry he felt that way and that I loved him. I told him I would really hate for those to be the last words he ever spoke to me. I said how would you feel if I went to the store and was killed in a car accident and the last words you spoke to me were "I hate you." I told him he would have to live with that for the rest of his life. It made him think. He was mad at me because I punished him and that is why he told me he hated me. I do not recall him ever saying those words to me again. It's time to educate the parents so they can teach their children.

Exactly, there is a ban on bazookas in effect and you can readily buy them on any street corner.

Except for the other 18 countries in the G20 that have a tiny fractionof the USA's gun violence it is a proven fact that gun control doesn't work.

I have a novel idea for you....why not TRY to get your police agencies to enforce the CURRENT laws 1st?

As mentioned in other threads, my neighborhood has a 3 time ex-con, lives with his (afraid to leave) wife and teenage kid (who at 15 has a kid of her own).

this guy is in possession of no less than 14 weapons, pistols, rifles, shotguns. (in Ohio, as many states, it's illegal for an excon to be in poss. of such)

The cops are called on this house nearly weekly for various reasons, loud noise, fighting, public drunkeness, etc etc etc.

EVERYONE knows about his weapons. NOTHING is ever done about it.

So .... you want yet more laws ?? ooooooooook

I live in the area, and went to school with the man who shot the trooper. The two acts are not related. Josh was apparently very troubled and had a long history of criminal activity. He shot himself shortly after and died this afternoon. The kid in the school shooting was going to run away from his uncle's house and took the gun from his mom's "for protection". It accidentally went off when he was preparing for school to get out. He is now in juvie with charges filed against him.

Try Googling "The Kitsap Sun" or "Port Orchard Independent" if you want some actual coverage of the events not this very lame reporting. You'd also find out that there's a serial killer on the loose in Bremerton, where the school shooting was, though that too is unrelated. It must have slipped under MSN's radar... that person is using a knife, not a gun.

Port Orchard (which is technically where the trooper was shot. I know, as it was directly in front of a home we almost bought) is home to the author Debbie Macomber and is the basis for her Cedar Cove series.

A couple of things about both incidents. First Ghorst is not a city its in the county on a road locals call the Navy Yard highway which follows Sinclair inlet which is a part of Puget Sound. My brother once attended Armin Jahr elementary school which is in a rather large neighborhood in East Bremerton so its rather surprising to hear about a student being injured by gun fire there.

Prayers and condolonces for the Trooper, his family, friends, and the Washington State Police. I hope that there was dash cam footage, and that the marker plate of the subject vehicle was called in during the stop so that evidence might be utilized to find and apprehend the subject responsible for this murder.

          Tough week for this area.

I bet they are going to do a better job of checking backpacks. All schools should have a person in charge of checking each and every student who enters the building. Most schools for visitors have the doors locked to the main campus and one must pass through a screening area, but that is not the problem. The problem is and always has been the kids.

Until parents get this through their heads and demand searches of such things as backpacks this will continue. The liberals will scream bloody murder about civil rights, until one of their kids gets killed, then they will blame everyone except themselves.

Again, I agree. ALL firearms should be locked away or at least have trigger lock when not in use or in the control of a responsible person. I believe an unattended gun should never be loaded.

Bobl-1819708 - First of all, I'm appalled at your comment. The trooper worked hard, and at a horrible time to be working, just to keep the citizens of my state safe. The trooper risked life and limb in the service of the citizens, and has died as a result. Isn't that good enough for you? Doesn't it seem to you like that deserves some respect? And I'm sorry that you were, in anyone's mind, associated with the NRA. I don't believe the NRA condones disrespect for law enforcement officers, and I would have to think that killing a law enforcement officer is the extreme of disrespect. You should be ashamed of yourself, and of your comment. The only "pig" here is you. Have some respect for yourself and others, and you will get respect in return.

The criminal who committed this act was no doubt released from prison by a democrat in the hopes he will register 15 times to vote for Obama. This supposition makes as much sense as blaming the firearm for the criminal act.

It is sad and pathetic to watch the democraps here complain repeatedly about the gun committing this crime,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,as if it arrived at the scene without a human accomplice who did all of the terrible deed with the exception of containing a projectile.

We keep hearing from the gun nuts that gun control doesn't work but why is it that places like Europe and Canada have so few murders compared to the US? Is it that Americans are just so much more violent that we would find other ways to kill each other if we didn't have guns? I don't buy the idea that we will all be safer if everyone is carrying. Very few people walking around with loaded guns intend to hurt anyone but in the heat of the moment they can temporarily lose their senses. While overall the murder rate has been declining, it is on the rise against the cops. Cops have to assume these days that anyone they come in contact with may be armed and that has, in many cases, caused the cops to be extremely nervous and they misinterpret every move as being aggressive or they think they see guns on unarmed people. The result is deadly and there seems to be more of that happening all the time.

Genocides happen in places with strict gun control.

Proud supporters of gun control include"

                  Adolf Hitler- 21,000,000 deaths

                  Joseph Stalin- 20,000,000 murders

                  Fidel Castro- 141,000 deaths

                  Hugo Chavez-

                  Marshall Tito

                  Chairman Mao- 30,000,000 deaths

                  Barack Obama- to be determined

Bill Clinton- Left Rwandans to die by the millions

Jimmy Carter- Iran is his legacy and a failed energy policy the current president still supports.

They love gun control in Sudan and loved it in Rwanda as well. If you support gun control you support government sponsored murder and have something in common with the worst tyrants in the history of the world,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,congratulations.

What the hell is wrong with Washington State? A State Trooper is killed at routine traffic stops, a 9 year old boy with a gun shoots a classmate at school, Josh Powell blows up his two sons when a social worker brings them over! What are the fooking representatives, senators, and governor doing?

We have democrats in control of the government,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,that explains pretty much everything.

Why is it that one political party or the other is blamed when people do bad things? Is the government now responsible for the behavior of the citizens? If so, God help us all. We've seen examples of the results of governments having absolute control of citizens around the world, and throughout history. It isn't usually very pretty. Or is it just that people jump on any situation as an opportunity to further their own agendas? Hmmmm...

And yet the left always supports the totaliarian government when push comes to shove?

Stalin, Castro, Mao, Chavez and Obama all support taking from the rich and dividing among the poor with a hefty cut left for them.

The state budget, grows year over year by tens of millions of dollars and democrats are screaming about "cuts". Cuts to a democrat mean limiting government growth to 10% or so and demanding taxpayers get raped to fund the dirtbags and losers who typically vote for democrats. Find anything actually "cut " in the new state budget,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,and by CUT I mean the program has less money than it did two years ago to operate with.

Democrats blame "gun owners" for gun crime,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,as always. You never hear one blame a "criminal" for a crime,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,why is that?

Do they blame "car owners" for DUI's,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,you never hear them screaming or see them protesting outside a car dealership when a DUI driver kills four people,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,why is that?

If you mean what you say,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I suppose you won't be voting for Obama again this year?

My condolences to the family of the slain trooper. The good people of the State of Washington thank you for this trooper's service to us and our families. We will not forget.

It would be a coincident if the trooper was following a lead to the adult responsible for the 9 year old boy who brought the gun to the elementary school. God bless this trooper's family and may he rest in peace. Washington state as well as others is reeling with a lot of tragedies lately. So many signs all around of ignorance, evilness and disparity. I sure hope the young girl shot a full recovery and I can only imagine school will never be the same again for her. Prayers for the trooper's family.

What would be the odds that the boy's father, in an atempt to hide the evidence, hid the gun he used in his sons backpack.

BSNBC's "reporters" leave blanks for everyone to fill in on their own.

Check the timeline. The boy brought the gun to school before the trooper was shot, and it is in the custody of the authorities. That particular gun would not have even been available to be used by the criminal that shot the trooper. The two tragic incidents are probably not even remotely related, except by geographical proximity.

1am and 1:30pm, bsnbc did not elude to sequence, the man could have done this in the morning, went home and stashed the gun in the boy's backpack then passed out. the kid gets up and goes to school, not finding it until later, fiddles with it a bit, cocking it, then pushes it back into the pack. a little later, rough-housing, he drops the pack, and bang!

because of the holes bsnbc leaves in this story, sounds as likely as not.

Sounds like a tragic day in that little part of Washington State. May that little girl recover and may the slain sheriff RIP and his family find some kind of comfort. It does seem strange for 2 shootings to have occurred so close together. Not saying they're related - but very strange.

Man, what is up with Washington state? A couple weeks back some "Dad" axed his 2 kids and burned them up with himself in a house, then A boy was shot at a school yesterday and a cop killed.. Taking that state off the old bucket list...

                        Technically:
The "dad" started it all in Utah with his wife going missing in 2009.
The school victim, a girl, was shot accidentally by a boy.

The state is a wonderful place to visit and normally to live in. Please don't let those incidences cancel out the fact that it's a beautiful state. There's crazies everywhere, not just in Washington State.

After witnessing the evil behavior of politicians and Wall Street bankers for the last decade it is enough to make an atheist begin to wonder if there is a Satan involved.
