Stylist to anti-gay marriage governor: No haircut for you

A gay stylist in Santa Fe refused to cut New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez's hair due to her stance on same-sex marriage. KOB-TV's Stuart Dyson reports.

A Santa Fe hairdresser is waging his own boycott of sorts: He is denying service to the governor of New Mexico because she opposes gay marriage.

Antonio Darden, who has been with his partner for 15 years, said he made his views clear the last time Gov. Susana Martinez's office called to make an appointment.

"The governor's aides called not too long ago wanting another appointment to come in," Darden told KOB.com. "Because of her stances and her views on this, I told her aides, 'no.' They called the next day asking if I'd changed my mind about taking the governor in, and I said 'no' again."

Martinez has said marriage should be between a man and a woman. Darden, who said he has cut the governor's hair three times, said he won't serve her unless she changes her mind about gay marriage.

"If I'm not good enough to be married, I'm not going to cut her hair," Darden told The New Mexican on Wednesday.

"I think it's just equality, dignity for everyone," he told KOB.com. "I think everybody should be allowed the right to be together."

Scott Darnell, a spokesman for Martinez, said: "The governor has been very clear that she does not support gay marriage but does believe that all people should be judged on their merits and not discriminated against."

He noted that Darden was not her usual hairdresser and that following reports of his decision, the governor's office got calls from more than 10 salons on Wednesday saying they'd be "happy to cut the governor's hair," Darnell told The New Mexican.

Martinez has come under some criticism from the religious right for naming an openly gay man to a post with the state Public Regulation Commission, KOB.com said.

In the movie "Life is Beautiful" a German Nazi officer kept wanting a Jewish internment camp prisoner to help him with crossword puzzles, if I remember correctly. The prisoner thought that the Nazi was sympathetic to his plight. It turns out the the puzzle was more important to the Nazi than a Jewish person's life. Why give aid and comfort to an enemy of liberty?

The enemy of liberty? now that is something we can talk about.

The homosexual is an enemy of liberty because the HA has been working hard in America to kick GOD out of her. To many dumb Americans only thinking about the weekend have left the nation unguarded at the gate (voting Booth).

Atheists, and homosexuals have gained much ground in surrendering our freedoms and our ideals to foreign nationals by electing obama.

The number one Ideal that distinguishes America from all other nations on the planet before, now and hereafter is the revolutionary belief that freedom is a GOD given right to all men. John F. Kennedy said it best, " That mans rights do not come from the generosity of the state but from the hand of almighty GOD." Inaugural speech Jan 20th 1961.

    Quiz: Who said this?

"Woe unto you who shall abandon the Almighty Creator from which the freedoms and the rights of all human beings find their source."

You fools...how can a nation expel the source of their freedoms and rights and claim to be a true democracy?

Easy, just vote for homosexuals and atheists and this is what you'll get.

All God fearing New Mexicans should boycott the salons who are willing to cut the Satanic Governor's hair. It is time for people to stand up for God not for privilege or money. I grew up at time that blacks were discriminated against mostly in the south. The south is once again rising to the standards it enjoyed in the past of intolerance and stupidity. God for goodness sake is MAN/WOMAN. God is unisex.

Your god is not the true and living GOD. Your god shall be broken to pieces as Dagon was when it stood before the Ark of the Covenant.

All you need to know about republicans is:

          who they vilify...(working people)

          who they defend... (rich people)

I agree....but lets keep things balanced because i know you know that Democrats aren't angels either right?

So...All you need to know about Democrats is:

Who they vilify...( working people) In california they will extend the tax increases on the working poor, and also will increase the sales tax for the third straight time without voter approval- thank you jerry Brown

Who they defend ( Non- working people and their Union masters) They have actually regarded the capitol in Sacramento as the union Hall.

76% of California's general budget goes to pay the salaries and legacy costs of 2% of Californians. Union membership in California's state employees union is 7.9 million of a total population of 37,691, 912.

You think thats vilifying the working poor when the only people getting a piece if pie are union members and then they have idiots like you supporting them too...please!!

You know what? Im gona correct myself.

Democrats do not vilify the working poor, They deceive them into believing they are their friend when actually they are gonna do exactly what the rich man will do to them exploit and fleece them.

The fact that he is offended offends me. God fearing Christians have the right to believe marriage between Adam and Steve is a sin and wrong! I believe in equality and the right to make your own choice, BUT...the "marriage" of homosexuals offends me and is an abomination! Without strong morals, this country is truly going to Hell and dragging the rest of the world along with it. No matter what the rest of the world thinks of us, our culture is our biggest export...and what a sorry culture we are exporting. God have mercy on us all!

                            Homosexual bigot.

Here's a man who refuses service to someone solely for political (and lifestyle agenda) reasons. This is no different than any Southern restaurant or bus service refuses to seat or serve blacks.

The black civil rights movement was about equality for all in lawful and socially acceptable actions/activities. No one is refusing bus seats, hanging, or widespread killing of gays in this day and age (yes, isolated idiots have killed gays for that reason alone, but you can find that for ANY controversial issue).

If the gay-lesbian agenda was really about equal rights, they'd have called on these very "human" rights be extended to ALL SINGLE AMERICANS (gay or straight). They specifically didn't -- this is about sanctioned marriage for homosexuals (and the traditional value of legitimizing sexual activities under the guise of "marriage."

So by law, if the governor wants to, she could sue the guy for discrimination, just like the lesbian couple sued a photographer for not wanting to photograph their "wedding" and another suit that was brought against a woman who declined to make a "wedding cake" for a lesbian couple. It is unlikely that the governor will bother with this because it is easier to go to any of the 10 other salons that offered to cut her hair. Why couldn't the lesbian couples do the same thing....find another photographer or find another baker? My guess is because they want to make an issue of discrimination instead of just moving on a leaving folks to run their business just like business has been done for decades. Recall the sign "we reserve the right to refuse service to anyone." It does not have to be about race, color, religion, sex, etc. but too many people want to play that card when they don't get what they want. Sad. Truly sad.

You people are all missing the point.

Beyond NM and Governor Suzie's unfortunate hairdo, the larger problem with gay marriage is that it leads to bizarre, Godless relationships... like mine.

And I think folks have a right to know that my husband and I work very hard each day to: ruin Traditional Marriage; recruit children into our drug-filled, sex-addled lifestyle; tear asunder the fabric of society; increase US dependence on foreign oil; and drink the blood of animal sacrifice at the full moon. We may refuse some service to straight people... but not that kind (wink-wink).

This is a problem, people. If gays can get married in states like NM at some point... well, it could very well mean The End of Days. No, really. It could.

BRAVO! To Mr. Darden for denying this female bigot service. If more Gay business people boycotted their oppressors, the world would realize how important and powerful the Gay community really is. Deny them the theater, gay-owned restaurants, florist shops, hairdressers, interior designers, and other industries where Gay people dominate. This New Mexico governor is a BIGOT -- and what is an Hispanic woman doing being a "republican?" Those bastards NEVER did anything for the Hispanic community. She is no better than one of those female guards at Auschwitz. And I am serious about this. Mr. Darden should give this bitch a "butch" haircut -- if she ever enters his salon. Now it's MY turn to be a bigot!
