As gasoline prices rise at the pump, so apparently does the brazenness of some thieves trying to steal it.
In Tampa, Fla., authorities say criminals used a minivan with a cutout floorboard, a pump and a big plastic container in an elaborate scheme to siphon gas directly from a gas station’s underground storage tank.
"When the price of the commodities goes up, we're not surprised to see that enterprising thieves will find ways to get that commodity and make a profit," St. Petersburg police spokesman Mike Puetz told the Tampa Bay Times.
Hillsborough County sheriff’s officials say the gasoline caper happened Tuesday morning at a Citrus Park gas station. The suspects had cut a hole through the bottom of a Chevrolet minivan and parked the vehicle over the station's underground storage tank. They then used a portable pump to siphon gas into a plastic tank inside the minivan.
A deputy working a midnight shift spotted the minivan parked at an odd angle at the closed gas station and went to check. As he pulled into the lot, the thieves took off in another vehicle, leaving the minivan and their liquid loot behind, according to the Tampa Bay Times.
Investigators found several hundred gallons of gas in containers inside the van with another 25 gallons spilled in the parking lot.
Marco Ishak, the gas station manager, told ABC News he was surprised by the attempted theft. “People are getting desperate,” he said.
"We had this problem pretty widespread a couple years ago," sheriff's Capt. Andy Ross said, according to the Tampa Bay Times. "It kind of ebbed. It seems like this is on the uptick again."
The national average for a gallon of regular gas rose this week to $3.59, up more than 40 cents from a year ago, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Experts say prices at the pump could reach a record $4.25 a gallon by Memorial Day.

Ya, and that is just the beginning.
Yep...just imagine when it happens across the world in 50 years or sooooo...
Next we'll be putting gas on layaway for Christmas, because it'll be so expensive.
We'll be happy to get a few hundred gallons for Christmas.
Road Warrior here we come.
Let's not develop alternative energy sources.
Let's develop smarter criminals.
.
News like this makes me not want to buy a Hummer even though it's American made and I will support the economy (sarc)
Did you ever think that if we drove smaller cars we'd have twice as much gas to go around. Everywhere I see soccer moms and "wanna be" construction workers "hauling air" in giant vehicles that get 15 mpg.
Let's replace "drill baby drill" with "Think moron think!"
WE NEED TO OUTLAW and PUNISH those who simply make money off other's work like financial people, wall street, who don't produce anything except money for themselves. The GAS PRICES are high because of their futures and speculation trading.
This is just the beginning is right. They call them "bleeder trucks". Some can hold 400 gallons (stacked) and pull with force to full capacity in 20 mins. Lower the gas prices and stop raising them on the weekends.
No, they're not Chris; they're high because the entire economic community has no confidencee that the supply is stable. That has nothing to do with speculation, it has to do with politics.
Those people really suck.
lol they are speculating that is not stable. So yeah it has to do with speculating
Similar thoughts as Steve-2570999. Could there be a luxury gas tax imposed in some manner that would reduce the cost of gas for the middle class family of 6 that drives a gas sipper and put the tax on the single driver daily commuter that drives a Humvee? Gas wasters drive up the cost for gas savers. Gas is a limited resource much like fresh water in cities and burbs. When water is scarce, communities ration. Rather than ration, let those that want to burn lots of gas, pay higher prices. They impact my pursuit of happiness via 1) cost of wars to protect oil interests 2) more pollution and 3) higher gas prices from excessive usage.
I propose every family in America gets 10 gallons a week @ the untaxed rate (16K miles/year in a vehicle achieving 32 MPG). After 10 gallons, you pay the tax rate. After 20 gallons, you pay the luxury tax rate. Businesses that depend on gas such as landscapers, shipping, and farms may need to have special consideration but maybe not.
They lost their van. I supposed it was stolden.
Is this the "Hope & Change" I was promised.
More like "Hoax and Chains"
Find another line..That one was old at least a year ago
I like that one Bill..
John, you must be easily amused....Understandable, sheeples usually are
And don't forget, Obama is like a fine wine who gets better with age...
So Bill, were you born stupid or what? Explain to everyone how the President (either Repub or Dem) has any control whatsoever over the price of gasoline. Did everyone miss that lecture in 6th grade civics class, are you just blowin smoke out your a$$ or do you know something about civics and economics that better minds than yours don't know? My guess is you are a simpleton inbred who is bereft of critical reasoning skills and who hates black men
Maybe not, but this is what happens when the GOP blocks implementation of Wall Street reforms that will stop oil and gas price speculation which adds 25-30% to the current prices. This allows the 1% to make gabillions at the expense of everyday consumers. Congress needs to get their minds out from under women's skirts and do something meaningful that will help the middle class.
The US is pumping 11% less oil than 3 years ago due to Federal lease contracts being cancelled by you know who. I also agree the speculators practice should be banned.
@Skookum Jim - Four years ago, everybody screamed that gas prices were Bush's fault. Interesting how Obama is blameless now.
I know people loooove an easy target such as the president but is there really any doubt that this is all over the saber rattling between Iran and Israel? Oil prices go through the roof every time somebody in the middle east takes a dump for God's sake. No different now...
That was a good one. Its nice to see someone with a sense of humor. With the rising gas prices, I want to vote everyone out of office, because the oil companies pay these politicians som much lobbyist money and perks to keep their gas prices so high. Did you know that in Venezuela they pay about .33 cents a gallon?
Dan, your logo also reinforces your obsession with the here and now. Speaking of sheeples - just another 49er bandwagon fan.
Skookum Boy:
Wow, your juvenile rudeness doesn't mitigate your own stupidity. The president has the power to open up drilling in any US state, territory, or off shore holding. If you don't think the current restrictions are not greatly responsible for the current gas prices, then you're probably a hopeless case. By the way, I'm a retired geologist with 40 years of experience.
Maybe if you whiners didn't choose to live 35 miles from where you work, if you lived somewhere with decent mass transportation, didn't drive a 10mpg truck, and didn't buy your 5'2", 100lb wife a 5,000lb SUV your life might be better. You made those decisions, now live with the consequences. No one ever guaranteed you an endless supply of cheap gasoline.
You mean you actually listened to three words this President said? You mean the "Hope and Change" so many of you have fought so hard against and lied say hard trying to prevent from happening? You ARE the joke!
The most amazing thing about this is the right wing nutjobs who still think that higher gas prices aren't the fault of the Greed Only Party.
In the face of the strongest Republicon obstructionism since the Johnson Administration, the President has managed to still get the economy moving, and make considerable headway toward a full recovery.
If the Teabaggers and the Big Business neocons in Congress want to try to blame the President, then they ought to be working toward all the new jobs they promised, and stop trying to screw over the Middle Class to help their Gazillionaire buddies.
Anyone who thinks that Big Oil isn't artificially inflating the price of gas is willfully ignoring the facts. Big Oil made upwards of $210 BILLION in profits last year. Corporate Greed, and Price Gouging 101. And the reason they're doing it is because it helps the neocon right wing nutjobs who are in Congress who have made the statement that their only mission is to "defeat Obama" when their mission clearly should be to "help the average American." Why doesn't everyone think that is treasonous?
How they can claim to love America when they clearly hate the average American is a mystery.
In my state gas prices are high, in part, because of the ridiculous gas tax. Every gallon has close to .40 cents added onto its cost. This is double what people in many states are paying
Wonder if the cops marked the gas as "evidence" and took it back to the station for "processing"
When it gets to the evidence locker it will be water.
Just like all the MJ in the evidence locker is lawn clippings.
.
Sounds fair. This is what Exxon does everyday to our wallets. And its totally legal.
You have a point Omar but the problem is that the stations are usually owned privately and it's another little guy trying to run a small business that is getting ripped off. Now if the station was owned by the oil company, you'd probably have a lot of people not only agreeing with you but maybe even cheering for the thieves.
As Chefaz said, unlike what most people believe the oil companies do not own most of the gas stations they are run privately. The gas in the ground doesn't appear there by magic nor does the oil company give it to you on an I.O.U.. The money for that gas load is drafted BEFORE the gas truck is even filled to go to the station. The price is what some people make for the whole year. So in fact your stealing from the guy and his family not the oil company, since the owner has already paid for the fuel to be dropped in his tanks.
Its good for business. Profit is not good enough any more they must make record profits. No record profits no billion dollar bonuses, just million dollar bonuses.
The quote from Mike Puetz is not very good one. Honestly do they think the guy was going to make profit on the gas? Don't know about anybody else, but I would not buy gas from a guy with a big plastic container. My guess is the person or persons involved just want to take little Susan to soccer practice the rest of the week.
Nor would I but can see where it could be lucrative. At least, until they're caught.
Just because YOU wouldnt buy the gas doesnt mean others wouldnt...I would, say at 2.00 a Gal or less
It would definitely be lucrative I won't disagree with that, but I'm sorry even at 2/gal I still would not put that into something that I paid a few thousand dollars for. I don't mean to take a stab at anyone, but I would have to be pretty desperate to buy gas from a random person selling it.
Many would buy it, though and give nary a thought to the station owner.
Desperate times call for desperate measures..but this goes to far. Why give others an idea that may work in some back road area? You asked for it...
Who is Obooba going to blame for 5/6 dollar a gallon gas???
The same people who are at fault, the speculators and the oil exporting nations.
Hey! Those speculators and oil exporting nations are just trying to put food on their families! Let them alone! It's just the free market deciding, ya know.
Right it wouldn't have anything to do with O not approving but a few drilling permits and investing billions of tax money in failed green energy projects right? Oboobatron.
Green energy is the future. When the oil runs out - and it will run out - you'll be thanking the leaders who had the foresight to invest in alternative energy sources.
There are 33 percent more drilling now than under Bush the younger. Try a little research before you open mouth and insert foot. Oh ya I forgot facts don't help your argument.
Never take an opinion seriously from someone who resorts to silly second grade name calling. Excuse me....preschool name calling. Obviously, that's all they have to offer on a serious subject. Don't waste your time, just ignore them.
Gas prices are being raised by Wall St. speculators, and as Wall streets greed is never satisfied prices will continue to rise. The coming war with Iran won't help the situation either. We should expect these kinds of incidents to become common. I don't endorse these actions but i realize people get desperate in hard times. It has come to this, sadly.
and the present administration still pursues it's stated agenda to cause gas prices to reach european price levels ... i'd rather siphon gas from cars parked at the dnc headquarters ... they cause, let them provide
Hilarious, I'm paying $5.25 a gallon as it is right NOW. You American's need to stop your gas price whining.
Maybe so, but your government needs the extra money to fund that health care system where the average wait between seeing a primary care physician and seeing a specialist is 19 weeks.
Time to go out and buy a Honda GX that runs on gasoline or natural gas. The natural gas brokers are saying prices will be at the $2.50/MCF level by early spring. This will give you a payback to even on this car in under 11 months.
Hello everyone....BIG BUSINESS raises prices, lowers your wages (or lays you off) and then they go to the expensive bar and have some drinks and laughs with the BANKERS over us 99%-ers.
Please tell me what you call the 50% that pay ZER0 taxes???
The wealthy
I saw this plot on CSI or one of those cop shows two or three years ago. What's old is new again.
Sad statement for the deputy. I guess the radio was broken that night and they could not go after the theifs?
Buy electric cars and PV for your roof and problem solved. No more OPEC, no more Big Oil, no more slavery
I laugh at the ignorance of Americans to continue with gasoline autos.
Greenie-it just don't work. Thats why they only sold 7000 volts, cause they suck.
Im thinking this is only the beginning. Wait till gas is around $5 they will be truckjacking tanks of fuel. It almost seems right to rob them they have been robbing us for years. the trouble is we can't make it hurt the cartel where the oil comes from. If it were up to me there wheat and all food trade would cost them dearly. They can't eat there oil
hmm...maybe we need those mexican tunnel designers to punch a hole through the bottom of the storage tank, and then we'd have our own 'oil pipeline' ...
Another problem for gas prices is BP's inability to keep their refinerys from burning up. 2 in 1 year in Washinton state. Incoming tankers are being slowed down due to lack of storage.
ha people wake up exxon/mobil made 47.86 bil last year! thats alot of profit. but if u dig deeper they also payed 21.35 bil in taxes. so where does the tax money go?
Obooba spent it all.
Lets see Obooba bailed out GM and Chrysler, and GM still owes US taxpayer 27 BILLION, I think Obooba should give me a chevy volt for free. After all I own GM and Chrysler.
Robert, "you ought to be tried for treason and deported."
"How dare you show such disrespect for the President of the United States."
Two statements made to Natalie Mains, on the floor of CONGRESS, when she stated that she was embarrassed to be from the same state as Bush. She didn't even make up a childish little name to use. If the Right Wing Nutjobs are going to demand that we show some respect to the President when THEIR guy is in office, then they damn well ought to show some when the other guy is in office.
Can't have it both ways.
Then again, that's what all you Right Wing Nutjobs do.
How do you live with yourself knowing that you hate Americans so much?
Evil, try reading the Constitution if you love America.
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free expression thereof, or ABRIDGING THE FREEDOM OF SPEECH..."
President Obama is not the King of America, while I agree he deserves more respect as our elected president, Robert is free to express his opinion. The "Nutjobs" as you put it, who would deny American's that right to freedom of speech exist on BOTH the right and left wings of American politics. As seen from a centrist position, both groups seem equally shrill, and equally dangerous.
Live in London based on todays dollar/pound exchange rate 1 gallon of diesel $10.24
I drink your milkshake
Dicken's Cider is way better than Dixon's
Live in London based on todays exchange rate £/$ 1 gallon diesel $10.24
Good point. The curious should take a look at the cost of gas in European countries.
"When the price of the commodities goes up, we're not surprised to see that enterprising thieves will find ways to get that commodity and make a profit," St. Petersburg police spokesman Mike Puetz told the Tampa Bay Times.
You mean thieves like Exxon, Shell, BP, and Gulf?
