Time magazine's Arizona Latino voter cover featured Michael Schennum, a Chinese-American man, pictured behind the large 'M' in Time.
Time magazine has apologized for its cover this week featuring portraits of 15 Latino voters in Arizona after it emerged that one of them isn't Latino.
The cover features the bold proclamation "Why Latinos will pick the next President," along with "Yo Decido" — or "I decide" in English. But Michael Schennum — the man behind the "M" in Time's name — told The Arizona Republic, for whom he works as a staff photographer, that he's "part Norwegian and part Chinese and part Irish."

Michelle Woo of OC Weekly in Orange County, Calif., was the first to spot the error, writing Thursday:
"A friend of mine, Michael Schennum, is the short-haired gentleman in the top row, center, behind the letter 'M.' He is half Chinese and half white. Not Latino. Not even a little bit."

Schennum said he wasn't offended by the article, "just surprised."
"It's a bit of an error on their part," he told the Republic. "If they would have asked me, I would have honestly answered, but they didn't ask me."
Time told New York Magazine on Thursday:
"Over the course of three days TIME photographed 151 people for the current cover. We took steps to ensure that everyone self-identified as Latino, that they are registered voters and that they would be willing to answer our questions. If there was a misunderstanding with one of our subjects, we apologize."

We have lost our country or any country when a majority have to pander to a minority to win an election.
Latinos are the fastest growing demographic. I wish someone would say why that is. There are two reason one is illegal immigration and the other is breeding like roaches. We should reward that?

The person who decides what race a person is -- is the individual. No one is marking a race/culture for that individual. I have a gut feeling that the "Asian" involved may have identified himself as Latino. If so, and it was a joke... it least it makes interesting commentary.
It would be interesting to find how the Times decided he was Latino. They took his picture. If a news organization took your picture, wouldn't you ask why? I think there is more here than has been revealed. But if the man marked himself as Latino, it would have been wrong to exclude him simply because he looked Asian or even if he was mostly Asian. It's his choice how he should be identified.

From past comments I gather that about 95% of the people who comment on this MSNBC website are very liberal and very much on the left just like the major news media including Time Magazine. My personal experience with liberal lefties is they are very bigoted because they are ill informed. They base their reaction to any issue on feelings. If it feels good or erotic then it's good. If it causes discomfort or requires thought then it's bad or evil. From the comments I see above, it appears most commentators are liberal lefties. The comments clearly show your real colors. Expressions like "they're all beaners", "they all look alike", is typical of the left. Latinos is a phrase made up by the left to categorize or stereotype people of a specific national background. The remarks above are extremely bigoted and totally at odds with the "Latino" expression that made this country great; namely "E Pluribus Unum". For the benefit of the bigoted ignoramuses above, that means out of many we are one. I find the comments above to be very offensive, probably because I am an "American" of indigenous and Hispanic decent. But I refuse to be offended by a bunch of morons. Like my dad use to say, "you can't teach a pig how to sing, all you do is waste your time and annoy the pig".

Robert, I think you may be correct. I am a beaner. I am very fiscally conservative. I WANT to be Republican...but sometimes I just shake my head in shame with people in my party and how backwards they are. @Steve... A national magazine prints an issue that attempts to tell an entire group of people how to vote. The _resident launches an African-Americans for Obama website. The _resident tells every minority group he speaks in front of that white Americans are their ENEMY and need to be PUNISHED. The progressives (formerly known separately as Marxists, communists and socialists) claim voter I.D. laws are racist. All I can do is hold back tears that our country is STILL thinking about "race", not individuals. There is no such thing as a latino/latina "vote" or "race"...I, for example, am white latina via Spain...we latinas and latinos are as diverse as anyone else. Me, for example, am staunchly conservative...but somehow Time ( and, frankly, liberals in general) want to lump me into a racial group or a gender group and call me a "liberal" or "Democrat" voting base.
I am truly sickened by what has happened in this country. I long for the days of my youth when I heard MLK and joined him in his prayer that one day we would all be judged on "the content of our character, not the color of our skin".
We are all American Citizens, we are not a group of this or that...we are each individuals. Stop the racism.
It is not Americans dividing us ethnically - it's the media folks. It's Latinos, Blacks, etc., etc. My partner has a good idea - lets everyone call ourselves first American then Irish, Mexican, Chinese, Black, etc. Get it - AMERICAN is first then your heritage. The United Negro College in its very naming is discrimination, why isn't that administration called on it? Not the only one, but the one that comes to mind with the advertising on TV. Just asking.

It is interesting that there is a National Black Caucus, the United Negro College fund, Blacks only universities, La Raza, Miss Black America, African-Americans for Obama website, the removal of the word "chink" from the English language, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the Hispanic Caucus, the Southern Poverty Law Center, the demand that U.S. citizens learn to speak Spanish, Affirmative Action, etc. etc. etc. But yet it is white Americans who are called racists, bigots and discriminatory. If you have not read the book "1984" you should. You would then understand what is going on.
My question is are non-hyphenated Americans going to continue to lie down and be walked over? Are non-hyphenated Americans so concerned about proving that they are not the xenophobic "racists" every minority claims they are that they are willing to repeat the mistake the Native Americans made? Are they going to allow their country, language and culture to be replaced by those of foreign invaders? There will soon come a time when non-hyphenated Americans will have to either make a stand and rid the U.S.A. of progressives (formerly known separately as Marxists, communists and socialists) and hyphenated Americans or become a foot note in history books next to Native Americans.
