DA: Mass. cop shoots police officer, returns to scene and kills self

BEVERLY, Mass. -- An off-duty police sergeant shot a police officer from a nearby town in Northeastern Massachusetts Friday night, then returned to the scene and killed himself as authorities closed in, the local district attorney said.

Authorities responded to a Starbucks in Beverly after a 911 call at about 5:45 p.m. ET Friday and found Beverly police Officer Jason Lantych shot multiple times, Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett said. Lantych is in serious condition and undergoing surgery, he said.

Off-duty Hamilton police Sgt. Ken Nagy shot Lantych and fled, the district attorney's office said. A warrant was issued for Nagy's arrest on a charge of assault with intent to murder, and authorities said he was believed to be armed and dangerous.

The 43-year-old Nagy returned to the Starbucks at about 10:30 p.m. ET, and police there began to cordon off the scene. Nagy fatally shot himself in his car as officers approached him, Blodgett said.

"He has taken his life," Blodgett told Boston.com. "It is a tragic day."

Nagy and Lantych knew each other but the motive for the shooting is unclear, the district attorney's office said. Beverly and Hamilton are towns about 5 miles apart in northeastern Massachusetts.

Boston.com reported that the investigation was ongoing and that dozens of police officers and emergency medical personnel were gathered at the roped-off Starbucks parking lot Saturday morning.

Nagy was promoted to sergeant last summer after 19 years of service, according to a July 3 story from the Hamilton-Wenham Chronicle. His wife, Katie, smiled as she pinned a badge on Nagy's uniform, and their two young sons clapped, the newspaper reported.

When asked his feelings about the promotion, Nagy told the newspaper, "It feels great. I worked hard over the 19 years to get here."

I was thinking the same thing, wonder.

I don't think cops should have guns. They just aren't mature enough.

That was a crappy, tasteless comment! Pathetic!!!

I would trust any person (police, government official, military included) who has extensively trained with firearms and gun safety over the large majority of gun owners in America who have never even read a book on safety.

And Cassie, if you own a gun... go take a safety class ASAP! If you've already taken one, go take another one!!!

I don't own a gun, Chris. I think you gun people are nuts.

My father taught us kids how to handle and shoot guns safely when we were children, just as he taught us how to handle and use household tools, electricity, cars, speed boats, and other potentially dangerous things. But I have never touched a gun since.

And here I am, not just an old lady, but an old lady who, during an adventurous life, visited Harlem at night in the early 70s to hear back street jazz, walked alone through the old town of an Arab country a year after 911, made a documentary of Tijuana whores and the sailors they service, hitch-hiked from Minnesota to La Porte, Texas for a photojournalistic jaunt--a few highlights--and lived alone most of my life and still live alone, all without a gun, or any other weapon, for that matter.

Maybe if you gun nuts climbed out of your Rambo fantasies and actually DID something with your lives you wouldn't end up shot dead.

And just to be clear, I don't think people who own guns for hunting, or even just to have a gun in the house for self-protection, are nuts. Just you people who buy 15 assault weapons and scream about your constitutional rights and fantasize about taking on a government-gone-bad and end up shooting yourself or watching your kid shoot the neighbor. You know who you are, don't you, Chris?

Awesome for you Cassie, but you shouldn't classify all gun carriers as nuts. Yes, there are some, many, that shouldn't own a gun and do. I have carried all my life and never had to use. But it's just the thought of having one that helps me feel secure. I practice gun safety, have gone to classes and keep things locked away when the kids visit. I have no Rambo fantasy either and did something with my life. I am a retired CIA agent.

Cassie its not the guns that are dangerous its the people using them. Someone intent on killing someone else will find a way. Guns just make it easier. I think its nuts that you are able to make such a broad minded statement from such a narrow point of view. This is a tragedy but there is also no where near enough information on this case presented here to make a snap judgement call. Were there threats given? Did Nagy commit a crime and was about to be exposed? Did the other officer do the same and it got out of hand? Not everyone who pulls the trigger can deal with the shock of killing another person. Cops especially ones who have been in service for 19 years generally don't last that long with an unstable personality. I do hope they find more information.

JJGarner & darrell-1708517,

Ahhhh.. you guys are waaaaay too funny! Where do you come up with such wit? Don't have an aneurysm over it though!

Cassie,

Only stupid people who never took a gun safety class or firearm training 'allow' such accidents to happen. Those people are the ones I'm talking about. The large majority of Americans who don't know how to properly use the freedoms they're given. There are too many of them and the NRA is too selfish to allow the type of gun control that would greatly help.

BTW, Cassie... Every time you post some sort of rebuttal, you go way off the deep end. It doesn't suite you well. Ease up!

Everyone will have to excuse ChrisWanker. He believes it is hypocritical of our government to not allow convicted felons to own firearms (the right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed). He won't discuss the fact that they aren't allowed to vote either (another right taken away when they chose to be felons).

I'm sorry. I didn't know that was a topic we're interested in here. We can discuss it too if you'd like.

He believes it is hypocritical of our government to not allow convicted felons to own firearms (the right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed).

I guess you don't fully read my posts (not that I really read yours...) and only concentrate on that. We all know why convicted felons should not be able to have guns, but there are some die-hard 2nd Amendment nuts that won't take the necessary measures to make it much more difficult for such people to get guns in the first place. They, too selfishly, hold on to their own rights to support any measure beyond what we already have. And allowing the government to pass the the gun control we already have was like pulling teeth for them! All-in-all, what I'm doing is calling those 2nd Amendment nuts hypocrites for being so adamant about letting everyone have a gun. Not hypocrites for not letting them have guns as you so asserted.

Some small town cop's in Ma. get paid to much and have way to much time on their hands, Perhaps you have heard of the police chief from the another small town in Ma., who had totaled his brand new cruiser off the back roads, and was found by his own officers, with his pants down, drunk and the passenger side windshield broke (from the inside). This is not a joke, and the list goes on. No accountability, no professionalism and their union is a joke. Their stupidity discredits those that actually work hard to "Protect and Serve".

Yes Wet Willie, but the problem is law enforcement has been granted way too much leeway and power in their use of "justifiable" deadly force against us citizens, causing them to become a danger to the society they're supposed to serve and protect.

you don't have a clue as to the "why" of this crime? Well, get over it. All police officers, active and retired have a good idea, from the information released, what was at work here and the info is on a need to know basis which the rest of you vultures don't need to know. A speed recovery to the injured officer as no matter what the alleged provocation, deadly force against another is not the answer.

"My fellow Americans, today is day of sadness. Our country, indeed the entire world, has sufferred a grievous injury at the hands of a small group of extremists. Both the nuclear attack of 25 December on the great state of Israel and the bombing of the capitol building right here in Washington have hurt us badly. But now is not the time for mourning. It is the time for action. We must band together, not ONLY as Americans, but as citizens of the world. Whether you are white or black, straight or gay, muslim or jew it is time to put those differences aside."
"The time for half measures is past, America needs leadership. Our economy is devasted. Violence is breaking out in cities accross the nation. Congress has been all but destroyed and measures MUST be taken to restore order. Emergency elections must be held, this government cannot function without a congress, our COUNTRY cannot function without a government. As you know, both President elect Gingrich and Vice-President elect Rubio died in the attack of 29 December. As a result of this heinous attack on our political structure, oureconomy and our nation as a whole, I am COMPELLED to take action"
"Our constitution has no provision for this, the succession is unclear, and indeed the time for politics and half-measures is past.In order to restore Democracy the first order of business is to stop the violence and see to the needs of the people. Every resource at our disposal must be utilized to ensure the survival of the Union, to that end I have mobilized the military. Let me be clear, this is NOT martial law. Our soldiers are on the streets to insure freedom, to protect our fuel supplies, and to protect those citizens, those PEOPLE who cannot protect themselves."
"Our economy has been badly hurt. Inflation is out of control. Thousand dollar a gallon gas makes everyday impossible for 99% of all Americans. Steps must be taken to prevent total economic collapse, and to that end our brave GIs will be distributing gasoline to all Americans free of charge. Everyone will receive their fair share. We cannot be held hostage to profiteers and speculators, the stakes are too high, the situation is too grave. All supplies of oil and gas will be temporarily nationalized, until such time as the situation has stabilized"
"The food situation is equally grave. First, let me be clear, there is ENOUGH FOOD for everyone. Distibution is a problem. I feel your pain America, but I have good news for you. We are not alone. Even as I speak, an international coalition of relief workers are on their way. Food WILL be distributed to everyone. These relief workers must not be feared, they are here to help us. But we have to do our part too. We cannot count on the United Nations to feed us. Effective immediately, all food supplies belong to all the people equally. Stockpiling and hoarding cannot be tolerated in these dangerous times. We cannot allow the priveleged few to determine who gets to eat."
"These are only short term measures. As Americans we will perservere, indeed we WILL triumph. One of the most critical challenges ahead of us is repairing the damage to our economy. We must get America back on its feet. My new jobs plan is the first step in that program. As of noon today, federal funds have been made available to several American companies. Manufacturing of energy efficient cars will be escalated. This will have a two fold effect, one it will get people back to work. This program will creat over a million jobs in the next month alone. Secondly, it will reduce our dependance upon gasoline making our Nation even stronger. But this is not enough. Most Americans do not have the simple good fortune to live in an urban manufacturing center like detroit. Nor can we continue to support those Americans who are able to work, but simply dont want to. My new infrastructure program will provide jobs for ALL ablebodied Americans. Roads will be built, bridges repaired, and memorials constructed. These jobs will pay well, and health care will be provided for all workers participating in this program."
"Finally America, I want to assure you of three things. We may be down, we may be hurt, BUT WE ARE NOT FINISHED. WE WILL RISE AGAIN, STRONGER THAN BEFORE. Secondly WE ARE NOT ALONE. America has allies, STRONG allies and they stand with us. Finally, our constitutional form of government, the internet and free elections be restored AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. You know me America, I stand with you.But you MUST stand with me if we are going to survive these very trying time."

That's what you call killing 2 birds with one stone. Great job. Now if only we could all the cops to do that, we wouldn't have to worry about police brutality anymore.

Good luck with that "no one" thing. When YOU personally can guarantee with YOUR life that no one else has a gun, including the police and military, I will give up my right to own one.

well Willie, if we all forfeit our gun rights, the people who obtain firearms illegally, still get them. And now we've got no armed police to fight off hoodlems. Thus leading to gang controlled cities, sound familiar?

No Adam, gun point. The point being made is that while guns are outlawed in UK they are still in the hands of the criminals. All that gun control does is keep guns out of innocent peoples hands. The bad guys always find a way to get them. So you are left defending yourself with your swiss army knife against a Uzi.

It is the same thing with licenses to carry concealed in most states. I mean really, do you think criminals go through all this hassle before they tuck that pistol into their pants? No, only law abiding citizens go through this process - which is silly when you think about it. For this reason Arizonadid away with requiring a permit to conceal a firearm...and almost 2 years later no rise in crime...shocking.

The real point behind gun control and why the liberals/socialists want this is to disarm the population. An unarmed population cannot fight back when they finally close up the borders and start ordering us into their camps.

In America you can walk around with your rifle on your back or with your pistol strapped to your belt in the open no need for conceal carry permits that's only if you want your weapon hidden from public view.

Sure would have been cool if their was a law to stop that loon...I am not for most gun control that does exist but there are sensible ways to keep guns out of the hands of lunatics..I know they can still steal them and stuff that is why there should be financial responsibility laws when people wanna own more weapons than they can ever use or keep locked safely away from loony family members and the like...

Another incident that proves that police are just like everybody else. In a country where testimony by a police officer carries more weight than from a citizen, this and other stories like it should level the playing field a bit more. I think it is time that it should take more then just "the word" of a police officer to convict someone. Let's see some uncut, uneditted video.

Come on people, stop making jokes and be serious. The issue here is gun control. Crooks, gangs, druggies and the insane should not have guns. Because those butt holes have access to guns and use them is the reason normal people have the right to carry. You work all your life, save and buy something. Then some ass face tries to steal it, or worse, kill you or your family, rape and so on. Now-a-days you gotta protect yourself. Not enough cops around to protect everyone. And there will always be the corrupt and that's because of greed.

Tiva you said= Because those butt holes have access to guns and use them is the reason normal people have the right to carry.

I beg to differ, it was because our founding fathers had the fore-site to know that a nation un-armed is a weak nation. ie. Look at Mexico and it's people, hell look at any country where the people aren't allowed to possess weapons. Thank our forefathers for the 2nd. amendment.

The issue here is anything but gun control. A policeman snapped for whatever reason and killed another policeman. No different than people in every walk of life. Gun control has absolutely nothing to do with it.

A warrant was issued for Nagy's arrest on a charge of assault with intent to murder, and authorities said he was believed to be armed and dangerous.

hmm, prime example of how cops and attys are deep/critical thinkers!!!!! someone is accused of assault and intent to murder and they immediately jump to a conclusion of him being armed and dangerous??? vs what? not dangerous???

and I would love to hear the back story? were these two secret lovers? were they complicit in some type of graft or corruption??? Screwing each other's wives??

...hell look at any country where the people aren't allowed to possess weapons.

I assume you mean those countries where the violent crime rates are much less than they are here. That would be virtually any country, by the way. Do you really think that the citizens of those countries, because they are unarmed, live with kind of paranoia that you do? Sure, let's arm every law-abiding citizen. And when we do, consider this scenario: An unhinged gunman at a political rally in a crowded parking lot (let's say, in Arizona) draws his gun and begins firing at a congresswoman, wounding her and killing other bystanders. Hearing the shots, and seeing the commotion, you and everyone with a gun in that crowd (and, in your fantasies, that should be everybody), draws their weapons and turns to discover a sea of guns pointed in every direction, some of them at you. Any one of those people could be the shooter. Quick now, what do you do next?

you mean like Mexico, Somalia, Afghanistan, Columbia? Or do you mean Mainland China, Russia, Ukraine where the people have little say in things? Then there is Switzerland or Israel.

Feel free to pull more out of context examples.

FACT is that two people DID have guns legally, drew their firearms, and determined that it was unclear who was shooting and chose to not engage with weapons and the gunman was subdued. Gun control types interject the "rambo" fantasy into every conversation. It seems the gun control types fantasize EVERY law abiding gun owner thinks they are Rambo.

jim overlin--aside from the obvious (that you didn't get proamerica's intent which seemed clear, at least to me and trust_verify), can you see no irony in your statement that just because somebody says something you don't agree with, they can't be pro America? That's what really ticks me off. I may totally disagree with your point of view (and I suspect I do but I won't go there as it would be even further off topic than this ...) but I would never claim that I am somehow "more American" because of our opposing viewpoints. I cling to the perhaps anachronistic notion that our differences are what makes America great. And yes, even as a raging liberal, I think the country is great. Not perfect, but great.

How many here remember that after "9-11", you knew things were going to start getting crazy?

It was logical, as nothing that insane had happened before. I recall telling a friend, "Keep yourself aware of it, and don't let it getcha" We'd known each other just over twenty years at that time, and she had always been kind of like John Wayne toilet paper... rough and tough, and didn't take crap off anyone.

Coupled with the changes we've been put through since and because of "9-11", well, keep aware of it gang. It's worse than I've ever seen.

In the meantime, have you heard about the drones coming to our skies? A bill was signed on Valentines Day, changing FAA rules to allow for them; THIRTY THOUSAND of them is the current plan. To some of the older people, like me, this is unbeleiveable. To some of you younger people, it might seem normal. I'll still argue that it isn't. It's the stuff we used to read about in science fiction books. And it for darn sure is not Constitutional, hence this push to present The Constitution as something that no longer applies.

And on that note, ask yourself who is the top legal authority in your County? If you assume it's someone Federal, you're wrong. Do yourself a favor and find out who it is.... it's right here on the internet!

The "simple truth" is, no one shoots anyone for a good reason. Outside of self defense, our only reason for shooting/killing another is due to their "narcissism".

Gun violence, whether self inflicted or perpetrated on others is so widespread in this country that we shrug it off with "light hearted" comments like so many posted here. If there was ever an argument for some type of required safety, training and licensing law, the comments routinely posted on sites like this are it.

Tens of thousands die due to gun violence each year in our nation, more than have died in Iraq and Afghanistan combined during their entire length. We salute our fallen soldiers and grieve over each one lost but we joke about people gunned down in their homes, gunned down in the street, gunned down in our schools, gunned down in our workplaces, gunned down in our businesses. We are numb to the tragedy all around us or we are so intent on defending our right to bear arms that we are willing to live with the continued slaughter.

Gun ownership ought to have some constraints, some training, some type of licensing, some type of thorough, national background check. Testing for competency ought to include scenarios that challenge the gun purchaser to make choices about how and when they would use a gun, how they would store a gun, how they would carry a gun both on their person and in a vehicle..., I KNOW second amendment guarantees the right, I've heard the gun lobbyists and gun owners shout from the rooftops about the evils of any type of control over gun ownership, why don't we hear the same from the millions of families whose lives have been destroyed by gun violence. Perhaps it is time for a more aggressive effort to support organizations that represent the victims of gun violence and their families/friends to act as a counter to the NRA?

I don't advocate taking away people's weapons but I do not understand gun owners and lobbyists who so vehemently defend unregulated sales of arms indiscriminately to anyone who wants one. Train, evaluate, license, THEN sell if the potential buyer meets the requirements, hold the licensing agency accountable for the actions of the license holder, require any unlicensed weapon be licensed under penalty of confiscation.

Gun ownership is right, so is living without the fear of being gunned down!

Sighber, did you not even read the headline of this article? This was a cop on cop thing. How much more training, licensing, and monitoring do you propose? No where in the constitution does it say such things should be done. I hope the FBI puts a wire tap on your phone, a cop on your back, and they nail you every chance they get, even if it means fabricating evidence.

I've never owned a gun, but was a Pilot/Military Officer and I've fired many guns. Take away my right though and I might find a way to buy one regardless of your laws. An armed militia is one of the things that keeps Washington in check. How do you think the Arab Spring happened?

Tens of thousands die due to gun violence each year in our nation

Please cite your site. Better than half of the deaths are SUICIDE and would find other ways to complete the act. Gun homicides are actually DOWN over the past 10 years. Excluding suicides the number of gun deaths is around 10,000 so it BARELY qualifies as ten thousand never mind TENS of. Perhaps you would care to argue the same about vehicle deaths? 30,000 or so a year... half due to DUI?

I don't advocate taking away people's weapons but I do not understand gun owners and lobbyists who so vehemently defend unregulated sales of arms indiscriminately to anyone who wants one. Train, evaluate, license, THEN sell if the potential buyer meets the requirements, hold the licensing agency accountable for the actions of the license holder, require any unlicensed weapon be licensed under penalty of confiscation.

Do you SERIOUSLY think gun sales are unregulated? Are you aware of FEDERAL law on purchases and gun ownership? The "licensing" agencies are BATF and the FBI. It is called a background check.

Why exactly do we need a license for something that is our RIGHT? This whole making a list of who is "legal" is what Hitler did in the 1930's.

The victims families/friends ARE speaking out. Ever heard of the Brady Bill? Are you aware that over HALF the households in the USA legally own at least one firearm? The majority of the remainder don't by choice but are not opposed to those who do. Always remember the "Moral Majority" are neither. Most people believe in the "Speak softly, carry a big stick" and are NOT as vocal as the minority who always seem to be stirring up a stink and expecting OTHERS to deal with it.

Gun ownership is right, so is living without the fear of being gunned down!

If you "live in fear" perhaps you live in a neighborhood where you should possess a firearm to defend yourself. That, like owning a firearm, is called taking RESPONSIBILITY for one self.

Then again, perhaps it is where you live? Per the FBI, the higher the population the more likely the violent crime.

Personally I've owned a gun off and on for 16 of my 50+ years. I've only drawn once, other than the range, when I heard someone attempting to break in. I don't live in fear but I like having OPTIONS. At one time I was threatened by a punk kid in California where I did not own a gun. It only took the police 2 HOURS to respond and I did NOT have options to wait.

You seem very intent on discounting my statements, that is your right, I stand by what I posted.

We the people, an armed militia? Made up of ragtag groups of gun owners against a highly trained army equipped with ordinance such as drones, laser guided missiles and even smart bullets is a joke! Live free? Absolutely, but freedom should include the right to live without becoming the victim of someone with "the right" to carry a gun but who lacks the intellect, stability, or is careless with the way they handle, carry or store their weapon. We probably won't ever agree on this issue but in light of the thousands who die every year in our country due to gun violence, whether self inflicted, accidental or criminally, I believe my thoughts are worth legitimate consideration.

I discounted your statements based on FACTS. There are NOT tens of thousands for starters. I am unsure of where you live but I have yet to find a firearm for sale at a flea market. I have seen them at yard sales. Last I checked the states I live in or near require background checks at gun shows and only FFL holders can make a sale. Parking lot sales at those shows will lead to arrest of all involved. Firearms are NOT licensed. Sales of firearms are. Licenses to carry concealed or to hunt are required but not to own. Again I discount your statements based on facts.

We the people, an armed militia? Made up of ragtag groups of gun owners against a highly trained army equipped with ordinance such as drones, laser guided missiles and even smart bullets is a joke!

Tell that to the Taliban and their ilk. The beat the USSR and are doing damned good job against us. It is ILLEGAL to own a gun in Afghanistan BTW. Imagine if it had been legal to do so. The British thought much the same about those Rebels in 1776. How could a few ragtag groups defeat the most powerful military in the world?

I will place this challenge to you, as I have done others.....

I am open to some form of regulation within reason that does not in consequence BAN guns. See NYC for an example of a regulation that effectively bans guns unless you know someone or pay someone off. I've no issue with requiring some sort of course even but it has to be reasonable in requirements and cost. Make your definitions, just don't play the have an inch take a mile. Back your statements if they might seem a stretch... i.e. tens of thousands when we both know it is barely 10k we are talking about. PLEASE know what an automatic is vs a semi auto. Are we talking long guns or hand guns? Ammunition type is a separate topic.

                                                    Trust,

I stand by my statistic, more than 30,000 deaths annually by gun in the USA. Many of these are suicide, you can discount them if you wish, but even you agree that ten thousand deaths are NOT suicide and this is okay with you? TEN THOUSAND? That is wholesale slaughter if you ask me and the more people are victimized the more of them decide to take up arms and the cycle grows. Facts are routinely cited and manipulated, but my conclusions are my own, based on a horrific number of people who are killed by projectiles fired from guns every year, I find the numbers outrageous and objectionable, I believe that laws are passed to rein in behavior that is harmful to others, ten thousand killed every year at the end of a gun ought to be sufficient to cause change to curb the bloodshed.! BTW, just search for "annual gun deaths in the United States" and you'll find ample proof of the statistics I cite.

Only one officer died, the shooter. The victim of the attack is still alive undergoing surgery. Read before responding. It's not that hard to read for comprehension. there will be lots of time to say foolish things - you don't have to rush to be heard first. This looks to be a very popular topic.

Was this a case of a lovers quarrel, black mail, difference of opinon that got out of control? Given the number of shots fired, a bit excessive for premeditated killing - there seems to be an emotional contingent to this shooting.

Authorities responded to a Starbucks in Beverly after a 911 call at about 5:45 p.m. ET Friday and found Beverly police Officer Jason Lantych shot multiple times, Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett said. Lantych is in serious condition and undergoing surgery, he said

Guns don't kill people, people kill people = true.

Falling doesn't kill people, its the sudden stop which kills = true.

Now - if we could just suspend gravity, falling would be a non-issue when it comes to death from falling from great heights.

Annually over 30000 people die in car wrecks. Few of those are suicide, generally not even included if they are proven to be deliberate crashes. if ten thousand is wholesale slaughter then what is 30k? Draw your own conclusions. Making noise is great but doing something acceptable to everyone takes more than talk. Get your FACTS straight and present a reasonable solution and people will listen. The sky is falling mentality and name calling wins few arguments. You don't cook a frog by dropping it in scalding water. People are good/bad guns are a tool.

In this case, gun ownership was probably a requirement...they were both cops! And that means they were trained, screened, licensed, etc.

" Proper ownership" of firearms is NOT the issue here.

IE: Guns stolen from residences, bussinesses, etc. The thugs in the inner cities are not going to the local police stations and getting licensed the legal way and then start shooting people. The thugs are stealing the the guns or buying the guns that have been stolen. Most of the problems you speak of are not committed by legal gun owners.
