Woman fined for faking cancer, raising money

RICHMOND, Va. -- A suburban Richmond woman was fined $100 after admitting she faked cancer to raise money.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch said that Martha Ann Nicholas pleaded guilty on Monday to two misdemeanor charges of obtaining money by false pretenses. Besides the fine, she was ordered by a judge to not take part in any charitable causes and placed on five years' probation.

A 12-month jail sentence was suspended, the newspaper reported.

The Mechanicsville woman had claimed at rallies that she was a cancer victim.

Her attorney, Sam Simpson, said Nicholas has made restitution of $1,700, the total she had collected for herself.

Nicholas had been suffering from a psychosomatic condition that made her believe she had a cancer-like illness, Simpson said.

Her family said she is receiving counseling and told the Times-Dispatch that they were relieved she was not going to jail.

Not that I know anyone who has or would do this, but I believe we all are related to someone who is a little too "Poor Me-ish" and "Over Dramatizes" things a bit too much. They act like when things happen to them, their the only one who is or has gone through something like that, they also need constant reassurance and desire for everyone to give them "Love & Support". My paternal grandmother and my mother are like that or their version of that, it can make you roll your eyes and not have compassion for that type or those type of persons. So I send out to all those who have relatives like that, a look or a word of compassion for having to deal with a person or persons like that. For those of you who have a relative who is a hypochondriac, several things you never do: 1) Give them access to books, magazines, newspapers or any periodical that lists and details medical conditions 2) Give them access to the internet, for the same reason 3) Give them a phone number to any family member, friend, neighbor who is in the medical field, so they can ask question.

I think this lady was out for attention. A woman in TN did the same but she received almost $10,000 in donations and also the people who worked with her gave their hard earn personal and vacation time so she could still receive a paycheck when she was out sick. The woman only got probation and has to pay restitution. I hope this lady gets help because I really think anyone who fakes cancer has mental problems. Now to the comments about the lawyer, guys come on that 's what defense lawyers do, find ways to get the clients off. So I have no beef with her attorney for what he did that's what he was hired to do plus if the shoe was on the other foot and we want a easy way out of anything, we would depend on our attorney to come up with something so give it a rest about the lawyer. Lets fight to get justice from the banks that took all our taxpaying money that bailed them out and now people who pay their taxes are out on the street. Lets focus on the real issues.

If we had a proper national health care plan, NO ONE would have to do any sort of fundraising and no one would get taken by this kind of stuff. In no other civilized country in the world do people have to do fundraising for medical care....

She should have to work at a cancer institute as a community service, just to see what her lies, and her fraud truly is , with all of the pain, cost, and loss. And all the people there should know her crime!

as far as i am concerned "condition" or not she had no right to try and get that money from anyone. obtaining it under false pretenses is the same as stealing.
its called hypochondria..something one of my cousins suffers from. "oh my knee hurts when i move it..my back hurts..im becoming crippled" when the truth is she wants pity and if she got up off her ass and out of bed for more than 20 minutes per day her body would be used to actual activity and movement.
that woman should have gone to jail, but, thank god for attorneys.

It makes me sick to my stomach that this woman was only fined $100!!! thats it?? That's what they call justice!!! At least fine her the amount of money that she stole from people! People who actually get charged for stealing get a much harsher consequence then a $100 fine. Wow! Sorry but in this case our legal system sucks!!!! She should go to jail for faking cancer! So sick of our justice system not doing what they need to do!

Currently dealing with bladder cancer. Have been through chemo and surgery to remove my bladder along with other organs. Need to use a catheter through a stoma in my abdomen to empty my internal bag that now collects my urine. Will need follow up visits for rest of my life and medical supplies each month which are not fully covered by medical insurance. Wouldn't have the nerve to ask people for donations. Can't believe that she could actually ask people for money for herself. Try asking for donations to a specific charity that deals with patients in your condition.

Why is it that when gas went to $2.00 per gallon under Bush, we had stories coming out of our ass?

However, now that gas has DOUBLED in just three years, hardly a peep?

Lying about something like having cancer is the worst lie possible. If she does not come down with cancer herself it'll be a miracle. She needs to crawl back under her rock where she belongs.

2 misdemeanor charges!!! What a travesty of justice! This woman totally abused the trust that people placed in her, and probably some of them will feel like once burnt, twice shy and so no more donations to people in need.

She should have started a fake ministry, then she would still be making money.

She faked it. How many doctors have the same disorder by telling someone they have cancer and don't.

As always, lawyers find excuses to masque an ordinary crime. So here comes the riddle: What is the difference between a spermatozoon and a lawyer? That the spermatozoon ha a one in-a-million chance of becoming a human being! Ha ha ha!

what a sick b!tch, my mother died of throat cancer the Thanksgiving before last, and before she died she lost everything she had including her home, because she was unable to keep working and not a single friggen place we contacted would help her keep her home or help her with anything for that matter. I was unable to keep her home for her at the time, having recently suffered events that lead me to have the PTSD that I have today.

Yet people like this b!tch can lie about having cancer and get all the help in the world. She deserves to get jail time for defrauding charities in my opinion, if people would quit screwing them out of money, maybe they could help people that actually needed it.

If there is any Karma in this world that woman will end up with cancer for real, and not get any help at all.
