'Oh, my God': 911 calls from school shooting

Police have released the 911 calls made moments after a teen gunman opened fire at an Ohio school, killing three students and injuring two others. NBC's KevinTibbles reports.

Police have released 911 recordings from the school shooting in Chardon, Ohio, revealing the chaos and fear from Monday’s incident that left three students dead and two others wounded.

"We just had a shooting at our school. We need to get out of here. Oh, my god," one crying female caller told a dispatcher.

"Everyone's running away," the caller added.

Another caller, a male student, instantly identified the gunman as Thomas Lane, a student, and said he appeared to be shooting at random.

"What was his beef with these kids? Do we know?" the dispatcher asked.

"I have no idea," he said, adding: "He's very quiet and he doesn't really talk to anyone."

In a separate call, an adult pleads with the dispatcher: “Chardon High School. We got shots fired. Gunshots. Multiple gunshots. We need help. We need help badly.”

By the time the 17-year-old shooter was in custody, he had fired at five teens in the close-knit community of 5,000 residents, located about 35 miles outside of Cleveland.

The calls, recorded by the Chardon Police Department and Geauga County Sheriff’s Office and released on Tuesday, describe a scene of panic as students ran for cover in the cafeteria, where Thomas, known as T.J., allegedly opened fire just after 7:30 a.m.

“We are in lockdown. We need assistance right now!” another female cries in a separate call.

NBC affiliate WKYC.com published a string of 911 calls, from the initial reports of a gunman on school property to the high school principal confirming T.J. Lane’s identity as the alleged shooter.

“Hey, it’s the principal at Chardon again. The alleged shooter ran out the back door… past the pool, alright?”

The dispatcher asked for a description of what he’s wearing. The principal told her he has a white t-shirt on and then said, “We have a name, we think.”

“Is that Thomas?”

“Yup,” he responds.

Lane did not attend Chardon High, instead attending nearby Lake Academy, a school for students with academic or behavioral problems.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Chris, way to properly pluralize the same Sally. Big props on showing off your level of intelligence to go along with your comment. All this sensationalism is quite popular with the lower end of the intelligence spectrum.

My only purpose for clicking---the headline--- was to come straight to the comments section. The headline is on the main page for all to see whether you like it or not. I have friends that have kids in the Chardon school system so this hits home. These kids don't need to look up every five minutes for the next two weeks and see or hear something new.

Let's make these kids and families put their healing process on hold so news organizations can make a couple extra bucks off the story.

It's got nothing to do with being sensitive "Sallys" and if you knew me you would know I don't fit that mold. It does, however, have a lot to do with being human.

Well there is after all a predominantly liberal bias by msnbc and it's readers/listeners. And self responsibility doesn't usually appear to be something in the realm of understanding for many of them.

How do you look away from CSPAN long enough to type a comment? I mean JJ, you are a political genius right? You actually believe that one party is better than another. Most everyone believe that one party might have a better line of BS than the other. That's about it. If you seriously beleive that polititians run this country, get your head out of the sand and pay attention to what they all say.

There's two things here. The first, the media usually publishes these things to sensationalize the story. The second, often these things are made public to show that the police did their jobs.

Of course it will be a circus, though. Everyone likes to feel closer to the tragedy. This is why you read this article to begin with.

That's a great idea. And since your child has a better chance of being struck by lightning than being shot at school, you should probably raise him in an underground bomb shelter. You know, better safe than sorry.

If the Parents, Teachers, Principles and the rest who are in authority, don't start listening to these kids who are being bullied, this problem isn't going away. I don't understand why kids that do all the bullying don't get disciplined or take some responsibility. Bullying has been around for ever and with today's technology, it's easier to bully and obviously more dangerous. No one likes to be bullied! What's really disturbing, is what these kids watch on t.v. and in the movies today. For example, if you watch Top Chef on Bravo, you'll see how three female chefs attack one of the other female chefs, and nothing was done to stop it. Ratings, go figure. My point is, kids copy what they see.

Shame on the media, with everything going on around the world, they seem to have nothing better to do than repeat the same news over and over. I call the news today "fluff news", nothing worth watching.

By all accounts, this wasn't a case of bullying. This was a case of a kid with anger issues whose girlfriend started dating another student, so he shot the kid and some of his friends.

Maruka, nowhere in the article does it say that his random shooting had to do with bullying, in fact the say they don't know why this happened, plus he didn't even attend that school.

I didn't even read the article because it's the same old crap that MSNBC and NBC thinks we want to read or hear.
But then I ask, what is the point of releasing the 911 calls?
Is it just for media sensation or is it putting something out before the the other media outlets get it?
I would think the majority of the people are really not interested in hearing someone scream over the phone there's been a shooting.
Normally you hear people in such a panic they don't know their saying and the person listening is trying to figure out what they are talking about.
Someday I would hope the media would spend the same amount of time reporting on the good that happens in the world rather then all of the bad.
But then again, the MEDIA probably think's we are not ready for that.

This is not a debate about guns or bullying. This is about parenting and personal responsibility in a culture that does not value life. This "boy" is lost, and has been all his life; he is now and always has been a worthless piece of s--t. First, put him quickly out of his misery (and ours) -- yes, I mean execute him -- no point wasting pity or compassion on him -- he gave none nor does he deserve any; he ceased being a "child" when he made the decision to take that gun (BTW, where did he get it?) to school. Next, hold his stupid, worthless parents responsible for his senseless and heinous crime. Lock them both up and throw away the key.

Sorry, new user - this post was supposed to be in reply to someone saying no females were shot "so how was this random?"...

One girl was shot - I believe she is the one who went home yesterday.
