In his email to six friends, Cebull writes: "Normally I don't send or forward a lot of these, but even by my standards, it was a bit touching. I want all of my friends to feel what I felt when I read this. Hope it touches your heart like it did mine."

The forwarded content states: "A little boy said to his mother; 'Mommy, how come I'm black and you're white?' His mother replied, 'Don't even go there Barack! From what I can remember about that party, you're lucky you don't bark!'"

If Richard Cebull lacks the judgment to know this is inappropriate for someone of his stature to be forwarding then he should not be in a position to pass judgment on others. Mr. Cebull should resign from his position and if he doesn't, then he should be removed through the impeachment process.

The e-mail may be offensive, but I do not see anything racist about it. The allusion to having sex with a dog is a little sick, but there is nothing racist in this allusion, particularly with the statement being made by a white woman. In any case, this judge showed very poor judgement in forwarding it and it is disturbing that he said the e-mail "touched him." He should probably just do the right thing and step down from the bench.

And you hear time and time again from some people on the right that opposition to the president is not about race. Yep, keep saying it and one day everyone will believe it. This is just disgusting and for a judge to send it out after receiving it, shows that he is a racist. He might not have a problem with dealing with minorities in his court room, but when they (minorities) are in power it's a different situation. This email was crude and degrading and is typical of what been spewed about our first minority president.

So, judges aren't allowed to enjoy dark humor? I've heard far more offensive things on Comedy Central's Friday Night stand-up. I've also seen far worse things about Bush. Get your panties unwadded- this is not that bad, and certainly shouldn't cost anyone their job.

I really don't see what the big deal is, as long as it cannot be shown that he is making racist judgements. People have the right to dislike others based on any criteria they want, just as long as they don't participate in behavior that legitimately hurts another human being (no passing an email doesn't rise to the standard). And that would be as a private citizen. When you become a police officer, a prosecutor/district attorney, a judge, etc. you give up certain rights. When someone in a position of power shows a complete lack of judgment it calls into question what other things might have been inappropriately judged. It also casts a pall over his future judgments. People need to think about their actions as there are consequences in life.

I don't know what's scarier, the judge's lack of discretion or the ignorance of some posters here who can't see the bigotry of the email.

So, the message in this e-mail touches Judge Cebull's heart? What kind of heart does he have? Certainly not the kind that most decent human beings have. I can't imagine what these friends of his could be thinking if the inferrence that the President's mother slept with a dog is 'touching' too. Racism is allowed to fester when people who claim they are not racist pass along such trash because they think it's funny, or 'touching'. Obviously the person who sent it to the judge knows where his heart lies.

Get this guy off the bench! Judges, especially federal judges, are supposed to at least show a public face that is independant and nonpartisan.

Federal judges are NOT ELECTED. The way to get him off the bench is to either (a) force him to resign with a relentless PR attack--on him and the Court in general; or (b) vote in a Democratic Congress that will impeach him. It does not matter if you live in his area or not. Vote Dem wherever you are. It is the overall make-up of the Congress that matters.

Virtually any employee who is given an e-mail account agrees to those terms and conditions, and you sign and date that you will follow them. In other words, you sign away your First Amendment rights when you misuse your account.

Couple of things:

If any of you have read the initial article (sourced above), you will note that it does not say that the judge wrote that this touched his heart, but that the forwarded email itself (from the original sender) contained the line that it touched the heart of whomever was the original sender.

Furthermore, it also mentions that it was forwarded a few more times from people (personal friends) to whom the judge sent it before it eventually ended up forwarded to someone at the newspaper, great falls tribune. Either the writer at the paper or the person who forwarded it to the paper went back through the names on the multiple forwards and decided to slam this judge publicly.... which is sort of wrong. I mean, consider how many crass jokes you have forwarded in your lifetime, and if some writer at a paper decided his or her politics and yours weren't in line, so he just published that you forwarded this joke to your friends. I bet if the newsmen were to go through all of the forwards of crass jokes everywhere (how many "seditious" emails were forwarded about Bush, Clinton, the other Bush), they would find that everyone is fairly human.

Anyway, before we go stringing up any judge based on a forwarded email, we'd best write the law that enforces: the emails of all government officials from all branches shall be public record and equally punishable for whatever offense might be taken by it, whether that offense is intentional or not, no matter who's in office at the time, so that everything is (dare I say it) FAIR (as our darling PotUS would have it). Thing is, that seems like a fairly dangerous way to go about running a nation, in my opinion.

I'm not defending the joke, which is rude and degrading to our president and his family, and should never have been written, as far as I'm concerned, however I don't think it's actually racist. Unlike those who believe it is comparing minorities to animals or interracial relations to bestiality, rather I think it speaks specifically to the level of respect certain people have for the president's mother and her judgment, or lack thereof. I'm not one of them, because I don't know enough about her to judge her. I will say that I am conservative and firmly believe that people should be responsible in their sexual activity, yet I don't see anything wrong with interracial relationships, so while I would never forward this email, that does not necessarily mean that I wouldn't agree at least in principle and privately that our morals and more importantly our ethics as a nation have degraded to the point where some people, especially those who don't even know who the "baby daddy" is, are probably lucky they know the "baby daddy" is human (I actually knew a white girl in school who claimed to have done it with a horse, but she also claimed to be a lesbian, so...). Does that make me a bad person, believing we are amoral and unethical? Nope. Judgmental, sure, but not bad. I think we're flawed, and we need to get back to trying to live right instead of just living in the now.

No matter how distasteful we find the speech of any American, we must continue to protect their rights to it. After reading that, I expected an actual heartfelt story that just happened to also be mildly racist, something that wasn't really overt, but just that could be interpreted as racist. This email was absolutely racist! If you can't see that I shall explain to you why I say that. The inuendo is that the black person is equivalent to a nonhuman (dog in this case). The exact definition of racism from the dictionary: "a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others."

It saddens me that I have to explain in this great detail to people. How can you read that and not get a punched in the stomach feeling?

The other problem I have is that Obama's mother was in a relationship with this Obama's father. It was not some drunken night of partying as the joke insinuates. A double dirty on the part of the joke writer.

The last problem I will talk about is that this man is a federal judge. He makes rulings on other's behavior! How can this man make a ruling on the behavior of someone who would think the same way he does. He validated this mindset by forwarding th email thereby saying that he agrees with the message despite what he SAYS (actions speak louder than words). The man should lose his job. The people at the paper were just doing their jobs, rooting out the story (in this case it was a much needed ousting of this "judge's" personal bias against those of a different race.

For those who don't understand or can't see why the "joke" was racist, you may want to revisit American history. Until 1967, (Loving v. Virginia) it was illegal in the US for African Americans and Caucasian Americans to marry each other.

Although we are desensitized to the term "mongrel" because we use the word to describe anything mixed now, however at one time this wasn't so. In the past mixed children were called "mongrels" in a very derogatory sense. (Black codes and Jim Crow laws). The barking part of the joke alludes to a mongrel dog like a so-called mongrel child, that's why the beginning of the joke starts with the question, Mommy why are you white and I'm black? The joke revisits the very heart of the racist mindset that the mixed offspring of such a union results in an inferior human being.

When one sees the joke knowing this mindset it's impossible not to see the racism. What's difficult for me to understand is why was this "touching" to the judge?

Federal judges are appointed for life and can only be removed by impeachment; this will not rise to that level as distasteful as his remarks may be. Precious few federal judges have been impeached - virtually all after being convicted of crimes.

But, the standard for recusal is only an ". . . appearance of bias . . . " - a very low standard. He won't won't be judging any more cases where blacks are defendants or parties to a lawsuit.

Give me a break, both Dems and Repubs send out hateful, distasteful, racist, bigoted emails about the opposing parties leaders. It happens everyday and I would be willing to bet that most of the people slamming this guy have forwarded crap like that, except about G.W. do you know who made it illegal for interracial marriages? it wasnt the people, it was politicians and the courts. do you know who made jim crow and segregation laws? it wasnt the people it was the politicians and courts, all for power. generally the average citizen didnt think much beyond their own surroundings and left most everything up to the politicians and courts to decide without question. there was not rampant racism or anything of that nature, most of it was localized to certain areas and to certain groups who used it to gain power.

I find the joke amusing. It's a joke and I enjoy comedy. There have always been jokes poking fun at the president, clear back to President George Washington. This particular joke is crude and can be considered wrong in many ways. I can see how people can take it a couple different ways, mainly because President Obama is the first president of african descent. After all, most jokes poke fun at someone or something to begin with whichmay be considered hurtful. What I find distrubing is that this judge was not acting professional in the least. By sending out this email, no matter how many people he sent it to nor to whom, he was not very professional. Being appointed to the position by a previous president of a different political party of the current sitting president does not make it okay because he does not agree with his politics. He wanted that position, then he needs to respect the position and all the duties that come with it. How can he set to judge someone when he himself cannot be of open mind? Does he think that he is above everyone else? Did he not expect to be judged by others for his actions? The least he could do is send a written apology to President Obama. If not, then I feel that he should resign from his high position.

I did not agree with everything President W Bush did, well, actually a lot of what he did but I still showed him the respect of the position of being the President of the United States. I believe that more people need to think this way, regardless of party. Point is, President Obama was elected by a majority of the population, whether you like it or not, show pride in our country and respect the position. As asked in my post, I want to thank you for proving me right. Now, I've spent an hour or so of my time reading back over the history of some of the more adamant people here and I noticed one burning similarity. Not one of you in the hundreds of posts I've read have ever taken a stand on racism committed against white people. Aside from the fairly overt implication that mixed race people are barely above the level of beasts, dehumanizing people of other races has long been the refuge of racists and bigots regardless of the skin color of the intended victims. No rights to free speech being squelched here, he said it and is not in jail or charged with anything, but hopefully there are some sort consequences for what you say when you hold an honorary position like Federal Judge!
