Depressions and recessions aren't made overnight. If you want to pin the deficit and economic downturn on Obama, you're only going to find agreement with the most misinformed. The recession had nothing to do with Obama and frankly started before he was even in office. A Depression doesn't have to recover so slow. Did you know that there was a depression from 1920-1923? The bottom fell out of the economy in 1920-1921 and was fully recovered by 1923.

I have a hard time saying we are out of a recession/depression because of the pattern of the great depression and the fact that in our day in age, we have a constant flow of 401K money into the market every day. The money has to go somewhere, and could easily be showing the market artifically high.

We need to get through a couple of more quarters without a major incident to shore up that "recovery" label.

So, does that mean Sheriff Joe thinks that Pres. Obama wasn't born? I do believe there is sufficient evidence to the contrary.

Eevie--many believe that these definitions are the other way around. Communism is an economic system in opposition to capitalism. Socialism is a political system which exists on a scale near Democracy and away from Absolute Monarchy on the right and Anarchy on the left.

We know this because socialist countries (like those in Europe) are also capitalist. Some communist countries have been democratic.

This can be a bit confusing, since socialist systems do take certain aspects of the production of wealth and cause them to be owned and paid for collectively--in the US, our police, fire fighters, schools, and so forth are owned collectively and paid for collectively. A system that would expand this activity might still be socialist, but would begin to look more and more like a communist system (also, communism looks a lot like extreme socialism).

Thus, the terms "socialist" and "communist" are easily confused with one another--and US conservatives very much like to make "socialist" the opposite of "capitalist" because then they can tag any effort towards socialism (such as socialized health care) as a slide into a non-capitalist state.

However, the fact remains that many European nations are socialist and that they are still capitalist and have made no movement towards changing this. Socialism is not the huge bug-a-boo that people want to make it. Communism has already collapsed--and no one appears to be entertaining the notion of bringing it back (even China has largely abandoned communism).

Still--it doesn't matter. If you want to say that socialism is an economic system--that's fine. The point is that no one is trying to do away with capitalism. They just want a few things taken out of the for-profit sector and turned into a not-for-profit, community owned sector--these services are services that everyone needs and that, if paid for collectively, are less expensive (not necessarily better run, but less expensive).

Medication and medical care in those parts of the world that have "socialized" it are far, far less expensive than they are in the US. For the most part, they are equally good. There are some exceptions--cutting edge practices that are extremely profitable (such as brand new medications in the US that are still under patent) tend to be more available in the US than elsewhere, and the most expensive private hospitals in the US are stellar. It is true that really wealthy people have it better in the US than in a lot of other places. But, socialized medicine is not altogether bad--and, not being wealthy--I am sorry that we don't at least have single-payer care.

Single-payer care, for example, is just like everyone in a state going in together (just as businesses do) to negotiate a better rate. Because the risk is spread among so many, the overall cost is lower. That's an example of socialism (even if it involves mostly the insurance industry rather than medicine, itself).

There are benefits to capitalism, there are some benefits to communism--full participatory democracy has its benefits, representative democracy has its benefits, etc. Under Mussolini, the trains ran on time. Everything (economic or political) has its ups and downs.

Please quit quibbling when people use a term in a way that you think is wrong--many of the "definitions" that one picks up come from political parties. It is kind of like Republicans trying to convince us that the US is a "republic" and not a "democracy." We actually have representative democracy--which Jeffersonian Democrats told us was mostly a democracy and which the Federalists told us was mostly a republic. But, really, we have a mixed government that is in part a republic, in part a democracy, and which has some socialist elements also.

Because someone else defines a term differently doesn't make them wrong--definitions are created by people who want to make a specific point. However, if you want to call "socialism" an economic system that is in opposition to "capitalism"--you do have to explain why European Socialist nations still have capitalism, okay?

Don't blame Sherriff Joe for all this. He is merely annoncing the findings of a VOLUNTEER panel of attorneys and off-duty police officers. They have a right as private citizens to examine the birth certificate under the Freedom of Information Act. If these highly trained and educated people have discovered anomalies in a public document that call into question its authenticity, and when said document is the only proof of whether the man holding the highest elected office in the country is, in fact, legally qualified to hold that office in the first place, then they would have been remiss to not bring those findings to Sherriff Joe.

He is must doing right by the people of his county. He himself is an elected official. He keeps getting re-elected by 70%-80% of the votes. It seems pretty obvious that the job he is doing (punishing criminals instead of coddling them, arresting people who commit crimes regardless of their race or immigration status and actually enforcing immigration law instead of ignoring it) must resonate with the wishes of the vast majority of his county's population, most of whom are conservative Latinos and LEGAL Mexican immigrants (Census data...look it up yourself), or else he would not keep getting re-elected.

The government has clearly defined limits and cannot infringe on the rights of its citizens, from whom its power is derived. Under socialism, the government is preeminent. The government spends the money of its citizens on programs it deems as necessary, most of them social programs. The individual's desires are preempted for the government's definition of what is necessary. Capitalism encourages growth and rewards ambition. A person's wealth is tied directly to how hard he works and the relative worth of thegoods or the service he produces. He responds to the needs of his customers, or he will lose money. Socialism discourages ambition and punishes growth. Businesses and private citizens alike are heavily taxed and regulated. Private property and private businesses are allowed, as are multiple political parties, but the majority of the wealth is surrendered to the government, who provides everything a person needs, but little of what a person may want. By taking the sting out of everyday life and giving people everything instead of making them work for it, the government reduces the incentive to strive to improve one's self. Without the very real possibility of homelessness, starvation and unemployment, the government encourages the maintenance of the status quo. It is that mind-numbing sameness to everything that the human brain instinctively rejects. Communism simply takes socialism one step further to the left. It is the ultimate expression of fascism, where socialism is basically "fascism light". There is only one political party. The State owns the businesses, the land, the housing, the jobs, the cars, the buildings, the stores, everything. If you want anything more than what you need to survive, you must seek the favor of the Party. Its counterpart on the extreme right would be monarchism, where everything is owned by the Crown instead of the State.

The fact that there are people willing to donate their private time to investigate the anomalies found on Obama's birth certificate proves that your statement about this being laid to rest is not true. Obviously, there is still some dispute in the matter. The Warren Commission did not lay to rest investigations of the JFK assassination. We are still talking about it nearly 50 years later. I suspect that the controversy over Obama's birth certificate will continue for some time, as well. As to pandering, one could say the same thing about Eric Holder bringing charges against Sherriff Joe to distract the public from the abject failure of nearly every single one of Obama's policies, and that this is just pandering to the Latino voter base in order to shore up flagging support from a sector of the populace that the Democrats have taken for granted for far too long. B. The unemployment rate was already OVER 8% by February 2009, President Obama's first month in office, and it was on trajectory to go as high as 15%.

C. The stimulus, while it contained pieces that I disapprove of, saved or created millions of jobs in the US. If anything, was too anemic a response to bring about a swift end to the deepest recession since the Great Depression.

D. Republican politicians, aimed at distracting attention away from the recession they accidentally created to the budget deficit they deliberately created, thwarted best efforts to implement good policy in favor of policies that prolonged the recession, repeating many of the same mistakes that prolonged the Great Depression.

All their facts came from Jerry Corsi - who runs a website claiming that:

1. The USA attacked the WTC on 9/11;

2. John Kerry was never in the military in VietNam;

3. Aliens are advising politicans around the world;

4. Obama is a Kenyan who falsified his birth certificate and draft card.

Note that the investigator admitted that they did not even contact the State of Hawaii to determine whether the birth certificate was valid. And a local AZ news team showed that the 'evidence of fabrication' could very easily have been caused by the scanner used.

You are right. One of my boys was born in Indonesia and gets US citizenship through me. He has a consular birth record from the US Consulate in Surabaya that clearly states that he is a US citizen from birth, i.e. natural born. Even if Obama was born outside the US, he would still be a US citizen through his US citizen mother.

I take it as a hopeful sign. Until now, Arpaio has relied on millions of dollars pouring into his coffers every year from bigots around the country trying to scapegoat immigrants for everything from the recession (persecuction of workers and factory owners may spur recession, but immigration grows the economy) to crime (immigrants have far lower crime rates than US citizens, regardless of ethnicity), to dandruff.

Arpaio arrests people for 'working while having brown skin' because that's easier than going after rapists and gang members.

I was just pointing out that if McCain had won, there would be a birther movement saying that he is not a citizen because he was born in Panama. Their arguments would make about as much sense as the ones used by the birther movement against Obama. As I said, it's all politics. Certainly Obama's mom was a citizen, and Hawaii was a state. He's a "natural born citizen."

You should actually read the 14th Amendment, especially the part that says "All persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof are citizens of the United States and of the states wherein they reside". There is NO requirement that both parents be US citizens for the child to be a natural born citizen. If the child is born in the United Stated, the no requirement that either parent be a US citizen for the child to be a natural born citizen. Unless the parents have diplomatic immunity (See the words "and subject to the jurisdiction thereof"), the child in that case is a US citizen by virtue of being born in the United States.
