Houston-area commuter shot in head while driving to work

A man was shot in the head as he drove to work in the Houston area early Friday morning.

Harris County sheriff's investigators told Click2Houston.com that the bullet went through the 51-year-old man's windshield and struck his head at around 6 a.m. on Veterans Memorial Drive near West Road in northwest Harris County.

The man was conscious enough to be able to pull into a nearby gas station, where he called his wife for help, Click2Houston.com reported. When she arrived at the gas station and saw all the blood, she called 911.

The man was rushed to a hospital, where his name and condition have not been released. Detectives told Click2Houston.com that he was talking to them.

Detectives are investigating where the shot was fired from and who may have pulled the trigger. The gas station has surveillance cameras, and investigators are looking at the video for clues, Click2Houston.com reported.

Probably due to the shock of it happening. Hope he is able to function normally after this.

That makes sense on his part but not hers.

H: Honey I'm at the gas station and I've been shot.

W: Okay Sweetie I'll be there in 20 minutes, now don't you move.

I doubt he had any clue what happened. Shock is like that. He just saw the windshield shatter and felt pain in his head. Probably didn't even hear the shot, depending on how far away the shooter was. And depending on how much force his brain took, he was probably incapable of thinking clearly. The call probably went something like, "I think i had an accident... I might be hurt... something wrong... at gas station by freeway."

Why didn't he call 911 himself, help would have come much quicker. Thank God he's alive.

A friend of mine had a stroke while showering early one morning before work. He was divorced and lived alone. His vision was blurry but he could talk and had to crawl to where he had left his phone. Not being able to see the keys of his cell phone easily (or at all for that matter) he knew by feel where the "redial" button was. The last person he called was his son the night before, he told me. His son had rescue there in minutes. Sometimes we have to "make do" with what faculties we have under certain circumstances. He made it past the stroke and is now doing OK.

When I got out of the military in '75, I was involved in an altercation with three gents and ended up stabbed, quite effectively I might add. Left for dead, for some reason I came to and drove to my nearest pizza parlor. Apparently the "crappy parking job" caught the attention of two dining deputies who took over, I was told. I guess you do strange stuff when your in that state.

Absolutely Waldo. My husband was a Port Authority Police Officer who responded to 9-11. Called me as soon as he could get to a phone. He said I was his first thought as the cloud (which he said sounded like the roar of Niagara Falls) descended upon him. Said I saved his life...Actually it was love. We call those we trust most. Kudos to all who survive...

Guns don't fire by themselves. People fire 'em. Could'a used a knife, a club, a frozen beer, or even a rock. Hee, hee, I never tire of all the absurd possibilities, yet. it's nearly always a gun they use.

When you're not sure what's going to happen next, you tend to reach out to the person who you find the most comforting. I knew I was terribly in love with one of my ex-boyfriends (we were still together at the time) when I was in a car accident. In the last moments, right before impact, when I was certain I was going to die, my thoughts focused quite sharply on the people I loved in my life and went from the people I felt "responsible" for to the people I reached out to for comfort. My younger cousins were first, then my grandmother, my high school friends, my mother, my father (who has always had my back) and finally my boyfriend. When the impact occurred, I remember his name was the only one I could think of and I was just wishing desperately that his arms were around me. That moment totally changed how I looked at him. When something traumatizing happened to him and his son a year later, I was also the first person he thought of. So yeah, I get why this guy called his wife.

Same thing happened to my fiance.. He had crashed is motorcycle (while we were on one of our breaks) and couldn't remember anything else but my name for 6 months. We happened to be "Separated" at the time but his accident and getting that phone call changed things. Ever since then we've been together and there has been no obstacles or person that could change the fact that we were meant to be. I love him more today than i did when we first met 11 years ago. As much as that crash hurt both him and me, I think it was a truly defining moment in our relationship that allowed us both to see what was really importanat. We are happier now today than we have ever been and I wouldnt change a single thing. While I wouldnt wish this type of accident on anyone, I understand completely why this guy called his wife rather than 911.. When things are so messed up and so crazy, the only ones you can think of are the ones you love. And they are the only ones you want to talk to.

A Hospital is not the place to be injured and alone. You need some one there who cares for you to let them know who you are. People get lost, mistakes happen, you could easily become a casualty of the system. Your chances are much better if you have someone to advocate for you. And of course if you don't make it you would want your last words to be to someone who cares and shares life with you. I would call my wife or sister before Id call 911. I might tell them to call 911 and meet me @ the hospital, He did the right thing. oh yeah and about the guns. BURY YOUR GUNS OR BURY YOUR SONS your choice everyone, wars can't be won, bury your guns, wake up and stop the violence.

Mike277 What the hell in this story even indicates this possibility? The fact that they're in Houston? Or that he was commuting at 6am? Pulling into a gas station? It said his wife called 911 AS SOON AS she arrived and saw all the blood. I would say that's not scared to call 911. And I would say that you're a completely ignorant, jackass.

By the way. Thank goodness he survived and hopefully he pulls through just fine.

He probably had no idea he was even shot, just that he had a sudden pain, and was bleeding. A lot of people don't want to go to the hospital if they can't afford it. I remember suffering for 2 weeks straight with intense intestinal pain that felt like someone tearing a dagger through my body, all because I didn't want to burden a hospital bill, seeing as they're so ungodly high. It ended up being a 9mm Kidney Stone, and I ended up waiting 2 more weeks and just passing the darn thing, after finding out about the joyous beauty of lemon juice in water.

As for why he'd not call 911, as many of your relatives have, it's probably the act of saying goodbye. You can either give your last words to a complete stranger who cares absolutely nothing about your well being, or you can tell someone you love goodbye, and that you love them. That's just speculation on my part, but honestly, that's what I'd probably do too. You only have precious few moments when you're dying, and you have to make them count.

Bury your guns or bury your sons......Catchy...!!

Truth is that in historical movies of countries like Mexico or scenes on the news of the Middle East, China, and other communist countries you always see the people in power holding the guns and the peasants protesting holding a stick.

Not me, I'll keep my guns. My sons know how to use them.

This is tragic and may prove to be just an accident. He is in Houston and they have many of the best doctors in the world. Good luck to them.

This is a horrible event. I hope the driver recovers completely, and soon.

Sorta reminded me of the one about the woman at the grocery store who was "holding her brains in place" with her hand after she got in her car, heard an explosion, and felt something hit the back of her head, and she used one of her hands to keep her brains from falling out of her head.

She fainted. She awoke, and yelled out for help in the parking lot. The police came, asked her to open the car door; she said she did not want to move her hand because she was holding her brains from falling out of her head. The policeman broke the car door window and opened the door. They'd both quickly discovered that the Pillsbury biscuit dough can in the shopping bag had exploded and the dough hit the back of her head.

This was in Houston, Texas. You don't have to register a gun in Texas, hand gun or otherwise. The only licensing requirement is to carry a hand gun concealed. You can't "open" carry a hand gun in Texas with or without a CHL, unless you are law enforcement or armed security, but there is no restriction on long guns or shotguns.

There is a good reason why there isn't a registry. It is horribly expensive and it doesn't prevent gun crime, which is the exact reasons why Canada is currently in the process of repealing their long gun registry law. Moreoever, it can lead to outright consfication, like in Britain or Australia. Even though gun crime was rare in England firearms were pretty much banned, yet there has been no appreciable decrease in gun crime since the ban was put into effect precisely because a law abiding citizen owning a firearm does not increase the likelihood of said citizen to break the law.

Takenaka, nowhere in the article did it mention "handguns." It might have been a longgun, (rifle for the uninformed.) Up here, in the northeast, we just had a guy killed, on the highway, while driving on a local interstate. It was a large rock, went through his windshield, smashed his skull, killed almost instantly. Problem was, he was driving a tractor-trailer rig. That aggravated the situation, as several other motorists were involved in the resulting collision. They finally caught the teenagers that got such a thrill out of throwing rocks from overpasses, an idea they'd got from watching a tv show.

Canada is NOT in the process of repealing its laws. And criminal gun crime in both Canada and Britain have both dropped to almost non existent. There's been a small upsurge in Canada the last couple years due to guns coming in from the U.S. via gang activity. But beyond that, there is not much gun crime in these countries. You never see stories like this, ever.

Banning things doesn't help at all. If anything, it just makes it more dangerous for everyone. They tried to ban prostitution. It's still a thriving industry, but sex workers have no rights, and they can't report rape. They even get lifted off the street and killed. We tried to ban drugs. That only served to drive people into the arms of the bad people, creating an all new crime war over weed of all things, and driving them into the same circles as crack heads.

We even tried to ban sex with people under the age of 18. Teen sex is on the rise, with women teachers going after young male students... and Catholic is still a thriving religion. Apparently, bans do not work. In that case, it's better to simply regulate, rather than outright ban. Heck, GOD tried to ban spanking the monkey. We all know how well THAT turned out...

Freedom, I beg to differ. Gun crimes are on the rise in Britain, and they continue in Canada. (Brother-in-law, retired British police officer, tells me the "gun crime." rate over there is steadily increasing.) Part of the problem being smuggled in guns from East and West Europe. And Canada is just a few miles from where I live. They are seeing a rise in the number of "gun crimes" being reported.

Part of the problem is people are getting sick and tired of being "dictated" to, and "ruled" instead of governed. Social programs are failing because there is less and less punishment for serious crimes. Society is being blamed, instead of people, for not accepting their own personal responsibilities, and that of their families.

Of course, in our case, we have really fine people setting the example for our young. People making millions of dollars, while sitting at a desk, doing nothing, but pretending to represent us. Others, "professional" athletes, not being held responsible for doing drugs, and other crimes, and the list could go on and on. But, they pay some program so they can "feel good" and expect everyone to bow down, or idolize, them.

Sorry Freedom, but guns do not kill, PEOPLE KILL.

If you went to a funeral for a victim of childhood cancer, and the priest asked the mourners to pray for a cure, you wouldn't say " show some respect, he shouldn't become a political statement," unless you had a fetish for childhood cancer.

Because there simply is no gun problem Ron. Gun violence, and violence in general, has been decreasing now for about two decades and is at the lowest it has been since the 1960s. Yes the USA as a whole is more violent than some, though not all, Western European nations by a good margin. But if you look at the break down most rural areas, certain new england, and pacific northwest sates have crime rate levels comparable to most Western European nations. It is the rust belt, the south, and southwest that have far higher than normal violence issues because of socioeconomic factors. Removing guns would do nothing to address the real issue. Case and point, Great Britain has implemented strict gun bans to try and curb violence in their country, but despite that, Galsglow in Scotland is now considered one of the most dangerous cities in the developed world. It is the knifing capital of Europe.

That's why it is so important to get out of the way. When people are in a hurry behind you, get out of their way. Be alet, and quick. Don't sit at lights when they are green, get up to speed in a hurry, you'll advoid making people angry. Nothing is worse than a slow poke.

No, people need to learn patience and consideration. sometimes someone hits the gas and their car hesitates or something like that, and all of the speed demons are going nuts in half a second. I say commuters need to know that everyone out there has as much right to be out there as they do. Turn down the car stereos and pay attention, and when something happens, consider that it might be an unusual occurance. Every day people fly by me on the interstate when I'M speeding. Where's the limit?

Still no anti-gun comments. Maybe this is an "anti-traffic" issue. Anyway I vote for Dr Pat51 to be the donkey of the day for attempting to turn this into a political discussion. Hey! Limbaugh said something totally stupid again! Maybe you should be over there defending the big Rush!!

@Dean25: Veterans Memorial Drive is very pretty, rich part of town in some areas. Depends on which end of the street he was on...the article doesn't specify.

The victim got help. Why he didn't call 911, who knows? His wife might've been on speed dial and 911 wasn't, or he didn't know what happened to him. And I find it hard to believe that any gun laws would've prevented the shooter from obtaining the gun. Enforce the laws we have, keep guns out of reach of crazy idiots, and let the decent people arm themselves for defense (although I fully admit that it wouldn't have helped in this situation.)

Very well said. I don't think the guy that got shot would have benefited from having a gun although nothing is mentioned in the article about whether he had one or not.
