A man was shot in the head as he drove to work in the Houston area early Friday morning.
Harris County sheriff's investigators told Click2Houston.com that the bullet went through the 51-year-old man's windshield and struck his head at around 6 a.m. on Veterans Memorial Drive near West Road in northwest Harris County.
The man was conscious enough to be able to pull into a nearby gas station, where he called his wife for help, Click2Houston.com reported. When she arrived at the gas station and saw all the blood, she called 911.

The man was rushed to a hospital, where his name and condition have not been released. Detectives told Click2Houston.com that he was talking to them.
Detectives are investigating where the shot was fired from and who may have pulled the trigger. The gas station has surveillance cameras, and investigators are looking at the video for clues, Click2Houston.com reported.

Why didn't he call 911 himself, help would have come much quicker. Thank God he's alive.
Probably due to the shock of it happening. Hope he is able to function normally after this.
That makes sense on his part but not hers.
H: Honey I'm at the gas station and I've been shot.
W: Okay Sweetie I'll be there in 20 minutes, now don't you move.
????
I doubt he had any clue what happened. Shock is like that. He just saw the windshield shatter and felt pain in his head. Probably didn't even hear the shot, depending on how far away the shooter was. And depending on how much force his brain took, he was probably incapable of thinking clearly. The call probably went something like, "I think i had an accident... I might be hurt... something wrong... at gas station by freeway."
Man must love his wife! If I thought I was going to die, why not have the love of my life be the last person I speak to?
Well said, kudos to you!
Maybe they are in the USA illegally and they both didn't want to call 911.
Check harmony of marriage. Wife's hitman slipped up.
.
"Damn company audit today. I should have called in sick. This is such B.S. I'd sooner take a bullet to the head than....................."
Agree with LINsane.
When my dad had a heart attack, he called his sister. She found him unconscious on his bedroom floor. He survived and is doing great, but it's always something that's boggled my mind.
Clue: gun violence, insane amount of gun hoarders.
Dick Cheney
if I was shot in the head and thought I only had minutes to live no matter what, I'd probably call my husband too. I know I know...
A friend of mine had a stroke while showering early one morning before work. He was divorced and lived alone. His vision was blurry but he could talk and had to crawl to where he had left his phone. Not being able to see the keys of his cell phone easily (or at all for that matter) he knew by feel where the "redial" button was. The last person he called was his son the night before, he told me. His son had rescue there in minutes. Sometimes we have to "make do" with what faculties we have under certain circumstances. He made it past the stroke and is now doing OK.
When I got out of the military in '75, I was involved in an altercation with three gents and ended up stabbed, quite effectively I might add. Left for dead, for some reason I came to and drove to my nearest pizza parlor. Apparently the "crappy parking job" caught the attention of two dining deputies who took over, I was told. I guess you do strange stuff when your in that state.
I hope he has the same quality of care that was afforded to Mrs Giffords. All Americans should be able to get and expect the same quality of care as Congress & Senators, but of coarse we don't cause their special.
Absolutely Waldo. My husband was a Port Authority Police Officer who responded to 9-11. Called me as soon as he could get to a phone. He said I was his first thought as the cloud (which he said sounded like the roar of Niagara Falls) descended upon him. Said I saved his life...Actually it was love. We call those we trust most. Kudos to all who survive...
Guns don't fire by themselves. People fire 'em. Could'a used a knife, a club, a frozen beer, or even a rock. Hee, hee, I never tire of all the absurd possibilities, yet. it's nearly always a gun they use.
Poor guy. Just trying to get to work.
Damn, Dano's right again. Dano for President!
@ mac f. When u get a chance smak your nutz with a rusty spoon reall hard, then use a gun on them nutz you can pull the trigger or use the handle. The point of my post dosn't make too much sense does it, but same with yours. But I highly recommend you do what I suggested to pass time.
When you're not sure what's going to happen next, you tend to reach out to the person who you find the most comforting. I knew I was terribly in love with one of my ex-boyfriends (we were still together at the time) when I was in a car accident. In the last moments, right before impact, when I was certain I was going to die, my thoughts focused quite sharply on the people I loved in my life and went from the people I felt "responsible" for to the people I reached out to for comfort. My younger cousins were first, then my grandmother, my high school friends, my mother, my father (who has always had my back) and finally my boyfriend. When the impact occurred, I remember his name was the only one I could think of and I was just wishing desperately that his arms were around me. That moment totally changed how I looked at him. When something traumatizing happened to him and his son a year later, I was also the first person he thought of. So yeah, I get why this guy called his wife.
Same thing happened to my fiance.. He had crashed is motorcycle (while we were on one of our breaks) and couldn't remember anything else but my name for 6 months. We happened to be "Separated" at the time but his accident and getting that phone call changed things. Ever since then we've been together and there has been no obstacles or person that could change the fact that we were meant to be. I love him more today than i did when we first met 11 years ago. As much as that crash hurt both him and me, I think it was a truly defining moment in our relationship that allowed us both to see what was really importanat. We are happier now today than we have ever been and I wouldnt change a single thing. While I wouldnt wish this type of accident on anyone, I understand completely why this guy called his wife rather than 911.. When things are so messed up and so crazy, the only ones you can think of are the ones you love. And they are the only ones you want to talk to.
Ok not the "same thing" but an accident still.. Sorry.. Truly hope the guy is OK and him and his family have their "Happily Ever After".
A Hospital is not the place to be injured and alone. You need some one there who cares for you to let them know who you are. People get lost, mistakes happen, you could easily become a casualty of the system. Your chances are much better if you have someone to advocate for you. And of course if you don't make it you would want your last words to be to someone who cares and shares life with you. I would call my wife or sister before Id call 911. I might tell them to call 911 and meet me @ the hospital, He did the right thing. oh yeah and about the guns. BURY YOUR GUNS OR BURY YOUR SONS your choice everyone, wars can't be won, bury your guns, wake up and stop the violence.
Mike277 What the hell in this story even indicates this possibility? The fact that they're in Houston? Or that he was commuting at 6am? Pulling into a gas station? It said his wife called 911 AS SOON AS she arrived and saw all the blood. I would say that's not scared to call 911. And I would say that you're a completely ignorant, jackass.
By the way. Thank goodness he survived and hopefully he pulls through just fine.
He probably had no idea he was even shot, just that he had a sudden pain, and was bleeding. A lot of people don't want to go to the hospital if they can't afford it. I remember suffering for 2 weeks straight with intense intestinal pain that felt like someone tearing a dagger through my body, all because I didn't want to burden a hospital bill, seeing as they're so ungodly high. It ended up being a 9mm Kidney Stone, and I ended up waiting 2 more weeks and just passing the darn thing, after finding out about the joyous beauty of lemon juice in water.
As for why he'd not call 911, as many of your relatives have, it's probably the act of saying goodbye. You can either give your last words to a complete stranger who cares absolutely nothing about your well being, or you can tell someone you love goodbye, and that you love them. That's just speculation on my part, but honestly, that's what I'd probably do too. You only have precious few moments when you're dying, and you have to make them count.
Bury your guns or bury your sons......Catchy...!!
Truth is that in historical movies of countries like Mexico or scenes on the news of the Middle East, China, and other communist countries you always see the people in power holding the guns and the peasants protesting holding a stick.
Not me, I'll keep my guns. My sons know how to use them.
This is tragic and may prove to be just an accident. He is in Houston and they have many of the best doctors in the world. Good luck to them.
This is a horrible event. I hope the driver recovers completely, and soon.
Sorta reminded me of the one about the woman at the grocery store who was "holding her brains in place" with her hand after she got in her car, heard an explosion, and felt something hit the back of her head, and she used one of her hands to keep her brains from falling out of her head.
She fainted. She awoke, and yelled out for help in the parking lot. The police came, asked her to open the car door; she said she did not want to move her hand because she was holding her brains from falling out of her head. The policeman broke the car door window and opened the door. They'd both quickly discovered that the Pillsbury biscuit dough can in the shopping bag had exploded and the dough hit the back of her head.
If someone in my hometown (Detroit) called 911, he might still be waiting for a response.
sad. glad he is alive , hope he fully recovers. What's the world coming to? I guess pro- non regulation of guns, people (gun- tards) , will think that he should have had a gun to protect himself.right?,...........hey notbitter, funny post ,sad too. Is it true that there are only four cops for Flint ?
Time once again for all the anti-gun fruitcakes to come flying out of the woodwork. Another avalanche of gun ban comments from the shyt-for-brainers.
Well I dunno. Is this because there were too many guns or no enough guns?
Bam, pre-emptive strike against the anti-gun lobby! Gotta "shoot" down their arguments before they show up, am I right?
Bet you one thing. Bet you a GAZILLION DOLLARS the shooter isn't an anti-gun fruitcake!
You may be right Mspielman, but I will always bet you that the shooters is not a law abiding registered gun owner.
Ban handguns.
As an anti-commuter fruitcake I resent you having "shyt-for-brains".
How about not feeding the trolls?
Well Dr Pat, you going to deny this poor guy has shyt-for-brains now because of a gun?
Lets get to the name calling because having a rational conversation is the last thing you want Dr. Pat.
This was in Houston, Texas. You don't have to register a gun in Texas, hand gun or otherwise. The only licensing requirement is to carry a hand gun concealed. You can't "open" carry a hand gun in Texas with or without a CHL, unless you are law enforcement or armed security, but there is no restriction on long guns or shotguns.
@takenaka,
You certainly don't have to own one if you so choose, but I will make that decision on my own without your help or the government..
Bet your favorite show is Doomsday Preppers?
yeah, kinda like women and contraceptives, right? Disingenuous at least, misrepresentative for sure....
Roger That, Dr. Pat.!!
@Widgetsx3
Yes, however you dont have to be "registered" to be a lawful gun owner, there is no federal registry (with the exception of NFA items) and not all states have a registry.
I'm not anti-gun. I'm anti-crazy people owning a gun.
There is a good reason why there isn't a registry. It is horribly expensive and it doesn't prevent gun crime, which is the exact reasons why Canada is currently in the process of repealing their long gun registry law. Moreoever, it can lead to outright consfication, like in Britain or Australia. Even though gun crime was rare in England firearms were pretty much banned, yet there has been no appreciable decrease in gun crime since the ban was put into effect precisely because a law abiding citizen owning a firearm does not increase the likelihood of said citizen to break the law.
Takenaka, nowhere in the article did it mention "handguns." It might have been a longgun, (rifle for the uninformed.) Up here, in the northeast, we just had a guy killed, on the highway, while driving on a local interstate. It was a large rock, went through his windshield, smashed his skull, killed almost instantly. Problem was, he was driving a tractor-trailer rig. That aggravated the situation, as several other motorists were involved in the resulting collision. They finally caught the teenagers that got such a thrill out of throwing rocks from overpasses, an idea they'd got from watching a tv show.
Some kids in my area dropped a pumpkin off a bridge and it hit a car full of cops, of all things. Needless to say they were caught but what do we do now?? Ban pumpkins??????????????
Let's ban rocks.
we should all appreciate every day, because you never know when things will @!$%# up for you
Oh, hell let's just ban everything, even clothes they're always in they way.
Canada is NOT in the process of repealing its laws. And criminal gun crime in both Canada and Britain have both dropped to almost non existent. There's been a small upsurge in Canada the last couple years due to guns coming in from the U.S. via gang activity. But beyond that, there is not much gun crime in these countries. You never see stories like this, ever.
Ban Takenaka!
They are repealing the registry, not gun laws.
Banning things doesn't help at all. If anything, it just makes it more dangerous for everyone. They tried to ban prostitution. It's still a thriving industry, but sex workers have no rights, and they can't report rape. They even get lifted off the street and killed. We tried to ban drugs. That only served to drive people into the arms of the bad people, creating an all new crime war over weed of all things, and driving them into the same circles as crack heads.
We even tried to ban sex with people under the age of 18. Teen sex is on the rise, with women teachers going after young male students... and Catholic is still a thriving religion. Apparently, bans do not work. In that case, it's better to simply regulate, rather than outright ban. Heck, GOD tried to ban spanking the monkey. We all know how well THAT turned out...
If you drive in Houston you had better be nice. Some of the most aggressive drivers end up in bad situations.
Freedom, I beg to differ. Gun crimes are on the rise in Britain, and they continue in Canada. (Brother-in-law, retired British police officer, tells me the "gun crime." rate over there is steadily increasing.) Part of the problem being smuggled in guns from East and West Europe. And Canada is just a few miles from where I live. They are seeing a rise in the number of "gun crimes" being reported.
Part of the problem is people are getting sick and tired of being "dictated" to, and "ruled" instead of governed. Social programs are failing because there is less and less punishment for serious crimes. Society is being blamed, instead of people, for not accepting their own personal responsibilities, and that of their families.
Of course, in our case, we have really fine people setting the example for our young. People making millions of dollars, while sitting at a desk, doing nothing, but pretending to represent us. Others, "professional" athletes, not being held responsible for doing drugs, and other crimes, and the list could go on and on. But, they pay some program so they can "feel good" and expect everyone to bow down, or idolize, them.
Sorry Freedom, but guns do not kill, PEOPLE KILL.
Maybe the OWS'ers that feel entitled to stay home and be supported by the government are right.
That way you don't get shot in the head by a sociopath.
You realize most sociopaths are Republican right?
@j.heron,
Coulda fooled me after listening and watching, Mathews, Maddow, Combs, Oldberman, etc ???
Who watches those liberal clowns???
We are following Greece more quickly than I realized.
I know what you mean. I saw a guy just yesterday wearing a pompadore hairdo full of grease; and his girlfriend looked like a young Olivia Newton John in a tight, black, leather outfit.
LOL!!!!!!
LMAO !!!!
Whoever this gentleman is, he shouldn't become a political statement...show some respect. I hope that he recovers quickly. Saying a prayer for him and his family.
I don't understand why it doesn't show respect for the victims of guns to speak out about our little gun problem.
If you went to a funeral for a victim of childhood cancer, and the priest asked the mourners to pray for a cure, you wouldn't say " show some respect, he shouldn't become a political statement," unless you had a fetish for childhood cancer.
@RonB, you're right, it's an excellent opportunity to speak out about our gun problem. In particular, what to do about folks who illegally own and illegally use guns. I'm not worried about my neighbor who has dotted all the "i"s and crossed all the "t"s (and stores his guns in a safe). It's the bad guys who bother me.
Because there simply is no gun problem Ron. Gun violence, and violence in general, has been decreasing now for about two decades and is at the lowest it has been since the 1960s. Yes the USA as a whole is more violent than some, though not all, Western European nations by a good margin. But if you look at the break down most rural areas, certain new england, and pacific northwest sates have crime rate levels comparable to most Western European nations. It is the rust belt, the south, and southwest that have far higher than normal violence issues because of socioeconomic factors. Removing guns would do nothing to address the real issue. Case and point, Great Britain has implemented strict gun bans to try and curb violence in their country, but despite that, Galsglow in Scotland is now considered one of the most dangerous cities in the developed world. It is the knifing capital of Europe.
K2000k, What does facts and figures matter. If the media say it is so, then it is so. You are overdo for re-education.
Because there simply is no gun problem Ron. Gun violence, and violence in general, has been decreasing now for about two decades and is at the lowest it has been since the 1960s.
Wow.
Unemployment is decreasing, too. Guess we can stop worrying.
The fact of the matter is that America is saturated in guns. Guns are far too easy to get. Our gun fetish is literally killing us.
what is with the strange random shootings today??
Sister I think its a result of society getting dumber. That reminds me, I got an appointment with the ministry of truth.
I dont see any anti-gun fruitcake comments yet. simmer down
They are being overwhelmed by the pro-gun fruitcakes.
Ever read the Apt Pupil by Stephen King? Scary. I hope the man will be ok.
nope. but i should. under the dome was pretty awesome. its the 1st s. king book i've read in 25 years or so.
I'm not a very big fan of any supernatural writers but 'Dome' was a great book.
Try 11/22/63 by King, his latest. It's very good and there's even shooting, so it ties in with the subject here. Had to add that disclaimer for all the topic police.
Anyone who has been a commuter in Houston has to allow for the possibility that he shot himself in the head.
Umm, the bullet came through the windshield. Nice trick.
I get it denver bill, that traffic is brutal!
0.o You owe me a coffee denver bill!
@sinkerdoodle,
Umm, maybe it exited thru the windshield. Nice spin...
I wouldn't live in houston if you gave it to me. It's not even a good place to visit.
but they sell Depends there and have Early Bird Specials at most restaurants - you'd be just fine
If he was really driving fast he could have caught up with the bullet he fired ? LOL
That's why it is so important to get out of the way. When people are in a hurry behind you, get out of their way. Be alet, and quick. Don't sit at lights when they are green, get up to speed in a hurry, you'll advoid making people angry. Nothing is worse than a slow poke.
You forgot accelerate on the on ramp!! You should be moving with traffic when you hit the freeway!!! GRR
Sorry I hope this chap is ok. He sounds very lucky.
OMG it took me 20 seconds to read that garbage. I'll never get that 20 seconds back. Lucky for you I'm not a madman with a gun who knows where you live (or your route to work).
No, people need to learn patience and consideration. sometimes someone hits the gas and their car hesitates or something like that, and all of the speed demons are going nuts in half a second. I say commuters need to know that everyone out there has as much right to be out there as they do. Turn down the car stereos and pay attention, and when something happens, consider that it might be an unusual occurance. Every day people fly by me on the interstate when I'M speeding. Where's the limit?
You just never know, maybe the people that are in a hurry are late for their crucifixion to save us from all our sins!!
Why not just paint "Narcissist" all over your vehicle?
OWS. They hate people who have jobs and work.
Why aren't you working fool?
Do you even know what OWS stands for UDumbo.
Still no anti-gun comments. Maybe this is an "anti-traffic" issue. Anyway I vote for Dr Pat51 to be the donkey of the day for attempting to turn this into a political discussion. Hey! Limbaugh said something totally stupid again! Maybe you should be over there defending the big Rush!!
What part of Houston was he in?
@Dean25: Veterans Memorial Drive is very pretty, rich part of town in some areas. Depends on which end of the street he was on...the article doesn't specify.
nevermind I was thinking of Memorial Drive. This was in Northwest Houston, but still not a bad place.
Not sure what authorities hope to find from the gas station cameras. He pulled in there after the shot.
Still no control ....huh?
Gov Perry are you going to round up the posse?
oh well I guess a lot more have to die
What ??? That made no sense whatever..??
Hello..he was in Houston...and anyone is surprised by this why??
@longisland,
What's your point ?? I don't live in Texas and not sure what you meant?? Please clarify..
Thank You.
Sounds like a sniper from the trunk of a car to me.
Dave, the reason why nobody is turning this into a political argument is because it's a moot point.
Mr. Bubbs, I think you should pay more attention to the discussion!
Rick Perry and Dick Cheney were "hunting" in the area and probably fired the shot.
Can we leave the politics out of this please. Joke or not everything is not political.
The only post you need to make is "I'm a retard", because that covers everything that you say.
An innocent man gets shot in the head and people here criticize his actions. Whatever. Next time you're shot in the head I'm sure you'll do everything right.
yakfitguy
I love the way you put that comment, cracked me up! I am still laughing. I don't know if it was meant to be funny but Next time the critics get shot in the head, they may not even survive.
Well, they say comedy is just telling the truth in a funny way.
Very true my friend!
Sounds like a helluva marksman if somebody was gunning for this guy.
My bad, post got all FUBAR. Never mind.
Maybe it was mitt romney shooting at "varments".
To all you anti-gunners out there, this happened in the most Liberal city in Texas!
I believe that would be Austin. Especially with all the Cali lib do gooders who bankrupted their state moving their.
The victim got help. Why he didn't call 911, who knows? His wife might've been on speed dial and 911 wasn't, or he didn't know what happened to him. And I find it hard to believe that any gun laws would've prevented the shooter from obtaining the gun. Enforce the laws we have, keep guns out of reach of crazy idiots, and let the decent people arm themselves for defense (although I fully admit that it wouldn't have helped in this situation.)
Tom
Very well said. I don't think the guy that got shot would have benefited from having a gun although nothing is mentioned in the article about whether he had one or not.
