Toddler found alive in field in tornado-hit area

As tornadoes left a trail of deadly destruction in southern Indiana on Friday, a toddler was found alive in a field in Salem.

The child was taken to a hospital in Salem before being airlifted to Kosair Children’s Hospital in Louisville, Ky., where officials had asked for help in identifying the little girl, who had blond hair and blue eyes, according to WLKY.com.

Cis Gruebbel, chief nursing officer at Kosair, told msnbc.com on Friday night that the mystery surrounding the girl’s identity was quickly solved and that her family was on their way from the Washington County area of Indiana.

She had no further details on how or where the child was found.

Airlifted to Children's Hospital.

Doesn't sound good.

Hope she can recover.

I think it was more of a safety measure, with as little as we got from this story I would imagine the child's condition would be mentioned if it was drastic. I'm glad the family was found quickly, curious as to where they where when this all happened and if the child was staying with someone else how are they as well. If the kid was actually in the storm/tornado when it occurred it's amazing she was alive, otherwise why was she there? Lots of questions, very little information.

The local article suggests she was hurt pretty badly. She's been reunited with family but not with her parents.

Wow, this poor little child was taken by a tornado and survived! Wow.

I sure hope she heals up quickly and can go home with her family very soon. I would like to know where she was "taken from" by the twister? Its still amazing that she survived and I am so grateful.

Best of wishes to all of the people down south where all of this terrible weather is causing so much misery.

Poor kid will probably be terrified of storms for the rest of her life. Then the family is going to have to rebuild. Hope we can all pitch in and help these people; it's a darn sight better than having to suffer through all the election year crap!

Scott appears to be one of those people who can't understand how clauses work together to form a coherent thought. Let me reword so that it is more obvious how the semi-colon and the antecedent/pronoun work together to join ideas:

Hope we can all pitch in and help these people because working together to help other people is a darn sight better than having to suffer through all the election year crap!

        There, does that make sense?

To any 1/2 educated person Cat made perfectly good sense. However, we all know the sad fact that most Americans are not 1/2 educated and that includes millions of those with college educations!

I am so very happy family was found quickly, no matter the condition of the child a quick reunion with family makes it at least 50% better.

The good Lord knows what He's doing. Sometimes He needs us to turn to Him...and He is using the little girl to bring notice to what miracles He will do for us! I have always wondered who decided on the colors. I mean, since the conservatives think the democrats are "socialist", you would think it would be the more liberal states which are colored red!

Junecleo--the phrase was "red state." Louisiana is, in fact, considered a red state.

But, disasters also hit blue states--California (which is in parts "red" and in parts "blue") has earthquakes. There was flooding in Vermont (which is a deep, indigo blue).

The thing is that when blue states get hit by such disasters, there always seems to be some nut case who calls it God's punishment for the wicked. But, when it is a conservative location, then it isn't punishment but just God's will and everyone is asked for their prayers.

In any case, it is wrong to suggest that a natural disaster is anything other than a natural disaster which could happen anywhere and to anyone. I hope that this little girl recovers soon and can be reunited with her parents.

I cannot begin to imagine what these poor people are going through, though my thoughts and prayers are with you. All my daughter and I have left of my granddaughter who passed away five years ago are, of course, our wonderful memories and pictures. Some things can be replaced but photographs are irreplaceable and if that happened to me, I'm not sure I would want to survive. Especially in this economy, how does one go on? I would not have the means, on any level, to do so.

Salem is a Hebrew word meaning peace. In Hebrew there is a word shalam ( spelling??) when used in a greeting means " peace go with you". Only hope peace may be restored for all the families, people, animals in tornado alley real soon.

Okay--and by that logic, any time a person is found several days after an earthquake, it's the "same story"? When another child is found thrown from a car after an accident, it's the "same story"?

Little children are frequently found after tornadoes--one little baby I know of was found in a tree, no longer alive--separated from their parents because they are torn from the parents and tossed (being very light). The stories tend to get printed because stories about little children produce a lot of clicks and revenue.

Was there a reason why you posted your comment?

No point in mixing polictics with disaster. They have nothing to do with each other. As for God, no one knows for sure until you pass on; but, I imagine, you sure would pray a lot if you went thru a tornato.

We've been knocked off our foundations by the force of nature and seeing this child who made it through helps us believe we can make it through as well. Please reconsider your words of hurt and use that energy to make a positive change in a way that is helpful. You don't have to believe in GOD to feel compassion for your fellow man. Thanks to all who pray, think of, and otherwise wish well to those affected by these storms.

God does not cause storms, nor does He prevent them. It's nature. There are, in existence, angels who come to the aid of those who believe in them and ask them for help; if they have permission to intervene, then that person or even a town/city is protected from whatever danger is around them at that moment.

People are confused when it comes to God and what He does and what He doesn't do. We wonder why this kid was saved, others died. Perhaps this particular child has had loved ones who prayed for him/her since birth. It received a blessing because of those prayers, which are like deposits built up just for times like deadly tornadoes.

Of course God has control over our world but He gave the greater part of that control over to humans when sin entered; He had to leave as He cannot be around sin. This mess we've created is our mess~ IMO, when evil overtakes good, God will then return and "fix" it.

It's up to us to pray for protection, pray for goodness to prevail, pray for our country's safety, and pray for strong leaders who pray for strength. Learn to turn to God when things are going good for you, give thanks, and He'll provide help and the power to get through the tough times.
