I'm not sure how her "medical condition" would cause her birth control (whatever she is using we don't know for sure but I went with the costliest option) to cost more than the normal person's birth control costs, but if so she should have kept her claim to that rather than expanding it to the other women at her university AND at other universities.

My wife is a PA and she tells me there is no way Fluke would spend more than thirty dollars a month on birth control pills. If Fluke needed the pills for reasons that had nothing to do with birth control than medical insurance would have covered it.

This shouldn't require so much explanation but I fear that the left is unwilling to be honest, again. Pills cost about $15 to $50 a month, which is $180 to $600 a year. Say the average is $30, that is $360 a year, not the $1,000 Fluke claims. Condoms should cost nothing since, but for some conservative or Christian schools, condoms are free on every campus I've been on. A depo shot every few months should cost about $120 or so a year.

Maybe our Ms. Fluke uses gold-plated condoms, or she includes in the cost of the pill the Domaine Chandon she pops with which to swallow the pill. I don't know her particular situation, but her claim isn't that her costs are atypical and unique to her, but that she represents the NORM, and that she has talked with many college women who report the same problem. I think she is a liar, and while Limbaugh should not have called her a slut I think it is true she is prostituting herself for her liberal cause. A written apology on your website isn't...an apology. In this case, public as it was, you should apologise directly to her, face to face, and ask forgiveness. Only God can judge your heart/motivation/sincerity, but taking responsibility for your actions while looking her in the eyes would be a start.

I really wish people would read what Ms. Fluke actually said and not rely on Rush to tell them what he thinks he wishes she had said. She made no statements about her own sexual activities and the bulk of her testimony centered around the inability of female students at her school to obtain appropriate hormonal therapy for serious medical conditions that had nothing to do with having sex (ovarian cysts, endometriosis, etc.) despite the fact that these students were paying for health insurance. For a lot of students who, like me, are on public interest scholarships, that’s practically an entire summer’s salary. Forty percent of female students at Georgetown Law report struggling financially as a result of this policy. One told us of how embarrassed and powerless she felt when she was standing at the pharmacy counter, learning for the first time that contraception wasn’t covered, and had to walk away because she couldn’t afford it. Students like her have no choice but to go without contraception. Just on Tuesday, a married female student told me she had to stop using contraception because she couldn’t afford it any longer.

You might respond that contraception is accessible in lots of other ways. Unfortunately, that’s not true. Women’s health clinics provide vital medical services, but as the Guttmacher Institute has documented, clinics are unable to meet the crushing demand for these services. Clinics are closing and women are being forced to go without. How can Congress consider allowing even more employers and institutions to refuse contraceptive coverage and then respond that the non-profit clinics should step up to take care of the resulting medical crisis, particularly when so many legislators are attempting to defund those very same clinics?

These denials of contraceptive coverage impact real people. In the worst cases, women who need this medication for other medical reasons suffer dire consequences. A friend of mine, for example, has polycystic ovarian syndrome and has to take prescription birth control to stop

cysts from growing on her ovaries. Her prescription is technically covered by Georgetown insurance because it’s not intended to prevent pregnancy. At many schools, it wouldn’t be, and under Senator Blunt’s amendment, Senator Rubio’s bill, or Representative Fortenberry’s bill, there’s no requirement that an exception be made for such medical needs. When they do exist, these exceptions don’t accomplish their well-intended goals because when you let university administrators or other employers, rather than women and their doctors, dictate whose medical needs are good enough and whose aren’t, a woman’s health takes a back seat to a bureaucracy focused on policing her body.

In sixty-five percent of cases, our female students were interrogated by insurance representatives and university medical staff about why they need these prescriptions and whether they’re lying about their symptoms. For my friend, and 20% of women in her situation, she never got the insurance company to cover her prescription, despite verification of her illness from her doctor. Her claim was denied repeatedly on the assumption that she really wanted the birth control to prevent pregnancy. She’s gay, so clearly polycystic ovarian syndrome was a much more urgent concern than accidental pregnancy. After months of paying over $100 out of pocket, she just couldn’t afford her medication anymore and had to stop taking it. I learned about all of this when I walked out of a test and got a message from her that in the middle of her final exam period she’d been in the emergency room all night in excruciating pain. She wrote, "It was so painful, I woke up thinking I’d been shot." Without her taking the birth control, a massive cyst the size of a tennis ball had grown on her ovary. She had to have surgery to remove her entire ovary. She’s not here this morning. She’s in a doctor’s office right now. Since last year’s surgery, she’s been experiencing night sweats, weight gain, and other symptoms of early menopause as a result of the removal of her ovary. She’s 32 years old. As she put it: "If my body is indeed in early menopause, no fertility specialist in the world will be able to help me have my own children. I will have no chance at giving my mother her desperately desired grandbabies, simply because the insurance policy that I paid for totally unsubsidized by my school wouldn’t cover my prescription for birth control when I needed it." Now, in addition to facing the health complications that come with having menopause at an early age-- increased risk of cancer, heart disease, osteoporosis, she may never be able to be a mom.

Perhaps you think my friend’s tragic story is rare. It’s not. One student told us doctors believe she has endometriosis, but it can’t be proven without surgery, so the insurance hasn’t been willing to cover her medication. Last week, a friend of mine told me that she also has polycystic ovarian syndrome. She’s struggling to pay for her medication and is terrified to not have access to it. Due to the barriers erected by Georgetown’s policy, she hasn’t been reimbursed for her medication since last August. I sincerely pray that we don’t have to wait until she loses an ovary or is diagnosed with cancer before her needs and the needs of all of these women are taken seriously.

This is the message that not requiring coverage of contraception sends. A woman’s reproductive healthcare isn’t a necessity, isn’t a priority. One student told us that she knew birth control wasn’t covered, and she assumed that’s how Georgetown’s insurance handled all of women’s sexual healthcare, so when she was raped, she didn’t go to the doctor even to be examined or tested for sexually transmitted infections because she thought insurance wasn’t going to cover something like that, something that was related to a woman’s reproductive health. As one student put it, "this policy communicates to female students that our school doesn’t understand our needs." These are not feelings that male fellow students experience. And they’re not burdens that male students must shoulder.

In the media lately, conservative Catholic organizations have been asking: what did we expect when we enrolled at a Catholic school? We can only answer that we expected women to be treated equally, to not have our school create untenable burdens that impede our academic success. We expected that our schools would live up to the Jesuit creed of cura personalis, to care for the whole person, by meeting all of our medical needs. We expected that when we told our universities of the problems this policy created for students, they would help us. We expected that when 94% of students opposed the policy, the university would respect our choices

regarding insurance students pay for completely unsubsidized by the university, especially when the university already provides contraceptive coverage to faculty and staff. We did not expect that women would be told in the national media that if we wanted comprehensive insurance that met our needs, not just those of men, we should have gone to school elsewhere, even if that meant a less prestigious university. We refuse to pick between a quality education and our health, and we resent that, in the 21

st century, anyone thinks it’s acceptable to ask us to make this choice simply because we are women.

Many of the students whose stories I’ve shared are Catholic women, so ours is not a war against the church. It is a struggle for access to the healthcare we need. The President of the Association of Jesuit Colleges has shared that Jesuit colleges and universities appreciate the modification to the rule announced last week. Religious concerns are addressed and women get the healthcare they need. That is something we can all agree on. Thank you.

If the employees negotiate with their employer, or the employer decides on its own, to cover BC costs, then that is their choice. But if at present those costs are not covered (G'Town is a catholic-run school) then covering them will cause the cost of insurance to increase, and other people will end up having to pay the bill. If you charged only those people who use the service or product the full cost for it then it wouldn't be insurance.

Why is it that liberals tend to never understand simple economics? I don't hang my hat, btw, on the religious liberty clause as a reason to not allow Mr. Obama to force people to act against their conscience, though that reason applies as well. My case would be built on two sides of the same coin--economic liberty and the constitutional constraints placed upon government. Perhaps if I believed in God I would focus on the religious liberty claim more as the offense would be more personal, but if that were the case I would simply have three reasons instead of two with which to argue against you and Mr. Obama, though I suppose it is fair to say that religious liberty is encased within the larger constitutional constraint argument.

whose medical needs are legitimate and whose aren’t, a woman’s health takes a
back seat to a bureaucracy focused on policing her body.

In sixty-five percent of cases, our female students were interrogated by insurance
representatives and university medical staff about why they needed these
prescriptions and whether they were lying about their symptoms. For my friend,
and 20% of women in her situation, she never got the insurance company to cover
her prescription, despite verification of her illness from her doctor. Her claim was
denied repeatedly on the assumption that she really wanted the birth control to
prevent pregnancy. She’s gay, so clearly polycystic ovarian syndrome was a much
more urgent concern than accidental pregnancy. After months of paying over $100
out of pocket, she just couldn’t afford her medication anymore and had to stop
taking it. I learned about all of this when I walked out of a test and got a message
from her that in the middle of her final exam period she’d been in the emergency
room all night in excruciating pain. She wrote, “It was so painful, I woke up
thinking I’d been shot.” Without her taking the birth control, a massive cyst the
size of a tennis ball had grown on her ovary. She had to have surgery to remove
her entire ovary. On the morning I was originally scheduled to give this testimony,
she sat in a doctor’s office. Since last year’s surgery, she’s been experiencing night
sweats, weight gain, and other symptoms of early menopause as a result of the
removal of her ovary. She’s 32 years old. As she put it: “If my body indeed does
enter early menopause, no fertility specialist in the world will be able to help me
have my own children. I will have no chance at giving my mother her desperately
desired grandbabies, simply because the insurance policy that I paid for totally
unsubsidized by my school wouldn’t cover my prescription for birth control when I
needed it.” Now, in addition to potentially facing the health complications that
come with having menopause at an early age-- increased risk of cancer, heart
disease, and osteoporosis, she may never be able to conceive a child.
Perhaps you think my friend’s tragic story is rare. It’s not. One woman told us
doctors believe she has endometriosis, but it can’t be proven without surgery, so
the insurance hasn’t been willing to cover her medication. Recently, another friend
of mine told me that she also has polycystic ovarian syndrome. She’s struggling to
pay for her medication and is terrified to not have access to it. Due to the barriers
erected by Georgetown’s policy, she hasn’t been reimbursed for her medication
since last August. I sincerely pray that we don’t have to wait until she loses an
ovary or is diagnosed with cancer before her needs and the needs of all of these
women are taken seriously.

This is the message that not requiring coverage of contraception sends. A
woman’s reproductive healthcare isn’t a necessity, isn’t a priority. One student
told us that she knew birth control wasn’t covered, and she assumed that’s how
Georgetown’s insurance handled all of women’s sexual healthcare, so when she
was raped, she didn’t go to the doctor even to be examined or tested for sexually
transmitted infections because she thought insurance wasn’t going to cover
something like that, something that was related to a woman’s reproductive health.
As one student put it, “this policy communicates to female students that our school
doesn’t understand our needs.” These are not feelings that male fellow students
experience. And they’re not burdens that male students must shoulder.

In the media lately, conservative Catholic organizations have been asking: what
did we expect when we enrolled at a Catholic school? We can only answer that we
expected women to be treated equally, to not have our school create untenable
burdens that impede our academic success. We expected that our schools would
live up to the Jesuit creed of cura personalis, to care for the whole person, by
meeting all of our medical needs. We expected that when we told our universities
of the problems this policy created for students, they would help us. We expected
that when 94% of students opposed the policy, the university would respect our
choices regarding insurance students pay for completely unsubsidized by the
university. We did not expect that women would be told in the national media that
if we wanted comprehensive insurance that met our needs, not just those of men,
we should have gone to school elsewhere, even if that meant a less prestigious
university. We refuse to pick between a quality education and our health, and we
resent that, in the 21st century, anyone thinks it’s acceptable to ask us to make this
choice simply because we are women.

Many of the women whose stories I’ve shared are Catholic women, so ours is not a
war against the church. It is a struggle for access to the healthcare we need. The
President of the Association of Jesuit Colleges has shared that Jesuit colleges and
universities appreciate the modification to the rule announced last week. Religious
concerns are addressed and women get the healthcare they need. That is something
we can all agree on. Thank you.

The monthly cost of these prescriptions drugs depends on which state you live and may even be affected by the type of drug and the prescription plan.

Also Ms Fluke did not state a specific length of time obtaining that law degree which could conceivabley be longer than the 3 years some posters keep referring to. So yes it is possible that it can cost 3thousand dollar and maybe even more depending on the reason for these drugs including for prevention of pregnancy.

Every woman is different and respond differently to various drugs and even at different strengths. This is not a one size fits all thing. By the way these drugs are used for the treatment of menopause, hormone replacement therapy for those young women and girls who bodies are unable to produce their own etc, acne, PMS, amoung other diagnoses/health issues. There are women of varying ages who have had to have ovaries removed for what ever reason. It could have been due to child birth or even a ectopic pregnancy eg a pregnancy that forms in the ovary thus the ovary must be removed.

These drugs known as contraceptives are therefore used for a variety of reasons including to prevent pregnany. It also helps a couple to space out the births of their children.

In this day and age where the average cost of raising a child to adulthood cost about over 300thousand dollars per child, and the fact that the more children a couple has, the poorer they are likely to be, unable to feed clothe and educate much less to send to college or university, so what is so wrong in preventing a pregnancy that the couple may not be able to afford without governmental assistance?

One would have thought that by using these contraceptive both parties were being responsible human beings, which was supposed to be a conservative value....isn't it?

One thing is obvious though is that the many people here defending Limbaugh and calling Ms Fluke a slut and a prostitute do not know anything about human anatomy nor anything about human reproduction, contraception or even about sexual intercourse imo.

I am so glad that you (I assume a male) are so intimately familiar with the cost of birth control [ills, and yes there are numerous brands and types...but not all are good for every woman. Some may be restricted to one type.

I have a prescription (not birth control) for a particular medication. Over the Counter versions of a similar pill can be had for easily under $50/mo... While the one I am on is only a very little different, it simply is not the same, the OTC ones do not work. My insurance will not cover the prescription pills...so I have a choice take the OTC that do not work or pay out of pocket $320/Mo for the ones that do.

So on top of my monthly single policy (Not a family one) premium of $675 I pay the $320 as well. Even the insurance company admits they are not the same. My doctor has tried a number of other pills OTC and prescription, only the one I take works for me, He has written that it is the only one that works. Still I pay all of it myself.

So don't say they can choose the cheaper pills, that is not necessarily the case.

Some of her friends had doctors prescribe a course of medical treatment that SHOULD have been paid for by their health insurance, but the insurance companies refused to pay.

There needs to be a mechanism for ensuring that insurance companies deliver what they promised. That type of oversight is a proper role for government. We can't have people paying tens of thousands of dollars in insurance premiums, only to have the insurance companies turn around and say, 'sorry, you're out of luck' when a catastrophic event occurs.

After all, what's insurance for, if not to protect against catastrophic losses? Surely we don't need insurance to help us buy tootpaste.

I would propose to you that, with Rush Limbaugh soon to be out of the political picture, Republicans will need a new voice of the Republican party to cause them to tremble with fear every time they speak. We will call them... voters.

The insurance offered through the university did not cover it, and it was too expenisive for Fluke's friend so she had to stop taking them, and developed a large cyst on her ovary that caused her to have to have emergency surgery. She lost the ovary. But you want to believe it's about Fluke wanting to have sex and having someone else pay for it. It's sad that so many people stick their heads in the sand and don't want to know the truth. That the GOP is in fact waging a very real war on women. Rush calls women being able to choose hormonal birth control if they want "goverment reaching into a woman's womb" but he has no problem with the government requiring a woman to have an ultrasound wand shoved up her vagina before she can get a legal abortion. There are MEDICAL ISSUES, not just avoiding pregnancy, that are treated with birth control pills. If we replaced the words "birth control" with "prescription medicine" every time they were used, maybe people would see what she was saying for what it is. She was not talking about SEX, she was talking about GENDER bias in insurance, and the cost of the prescription medication some women need. No different than diabetics who need insulin, some women need these prescription medications for imbalances and medical conditions of the reproductive system. Those of you who dispute the cost of this care also need to remeber that in order for a woman to receive this prescription medicine, she must have pelvic exams, too. That costs money, folks. Whether women have insurance and pay a co-pay, or are paying out of pocket, it adds up fast. "Tolerance" means "to tolerate" and not to approve of. I have read several of jeneferos comments, and there is no tolerance in them. Simply because a person is opposed to conservatives does not make the person a "liberal" who therefore has to be "tolerant." Some people are and some people are not--many conservatives are lovely people who are "tolerant."

Many conservatives are intolerant and ugly--when they bait someone who opposes them into also being intolerant and ugly, they like to point a finger and suggest that their vitriol is vindicated.

No--ugliness is ugliness. That one person chooses to be ugly does not justify an entire group of individuals also being ugly. Limbaugh can say whatever he likes--Juvenalian satire, which is what he likes to use, is a dangerous weapon that he wields badly. Once upon a time, he was good at it. But, his age, the drugs he has taken, and his love of cash for the sake of cash has caused him to lose the careful judgment that is necessary for quality Juvenalian satire.

I actually found his written statement to be much more thoughtful in its use of parody--he is clearly using "liberal" language and turning it on its head to mean the opposite of what it actually means. It isn't an intrusion when one is offered birth control if one wants it; it is an intrusion when one has to pay for an expensive and invasive and unnecessary ultrasound when one simply wants a medically necessary abortion (and some are medically necessary--there is no opt-out for those in which the baby is already dead). When it is Republicans who recently have passed multiple intrusive laws which take control over a woman's womb, it is ludicrous to suggest that Limbaugh is the knight in shining armor riding to the rescue of women too stupid to see that their freedoms are being taken away.

Let's remember that the present health care bill does not make birth control "free"; it makes the birth control a part of the package, to be offered at "no additional cost." When one gets "free checking" at a bank--it isn't "free," but part of one's membership package that is paid for via other means. So, Limbaugh is wrong on several levels: there is no cost to the taxpayer, there is no relationship between women being promiscuous and being on birth control, and there is no intrusion of the government into private affairs.

When Limbaugh improvises his Juvenalian satire, as he did with this case, he has a tendency to go off the deep end--possibly because he is too focused on his immediate listeners (who apparently can't engage in much critical thinking to figure out the points I just mentioned) and not thinking of the broader audience which can think critically. He is better in writing because he can think over what he is saying, show it to other people, and polish it. It is still a "turd," but it's a polished one.

Yes--Fluke can sue Limbaugh for libel and intentional infliction of emotional harm. He is, in fact, liable for what he has said. (By the way, it's "profound" and not "profoound" as well as "wants" instead of "wnats"). Demonstrating that some people who oppose you don't bother to proofread (or just ran out of time while editing), that some people who oppose you aren't tolerant, and that some people do not understand Limbaugh's Juvenalian satire for what it is proves . . . that some people do not proofread, others are not tolerant, and that some people don't understand satire. It doesn't support your position at all.

Limbaugh is not good enough at off-the-cuff Juvenalian satire to be deploying it--this is why he lost his television show and why he may well be about to lose his radio show. This will leave him with his books--and I hope that he will either try to write them while not on drugs or that he will employ an editor to force him to rework the sections that will create a backlash.

The rest of us are just deconstructing the target of his satire and demonstrating that the criticism was unmerited. I am a "liberal"--and I am not "pizzed off." being a contribution to society - not a leach and a drain on the resources of others.

medical system to provide you with birth control. Granted, it's not a take one when you need

it solution - but then the real question is - why do you need it at all? If you are in

college - your focus should be toward your studies and the responsible advancement of your

from pregnancy - results in pregnancy - or worse - a STD.
Do you then expect us to foot the bill for your out of wedlock child or the potentially life

changing diseases that are a product of many STD's?
Or how about the other side of the question - what about being attentive to your studies -

and being the productive and involved student?
I suspect you are also receiving financial aid - also provided by the government and many

individuals with money - providing grants and loans. The intent of these aids was and is to

provide you with an opportunity for success, derived from a commitment to the education for

which we are all paying you to complete. If your "activities" result in a pregnancy or STD,

then your studies will be vastly interrupted - potentially ended.
As a taxpayer, I would hate to see you lose your opportunity for success - but more

importantly, I don't believe that you have the right to expect even more "FREE" aid to

further any pursuits which are contrary to the primary activity for which we are all paying

you to fulfill, getting an education.

So, my point is quite simple and clear - you are violating our trust, abusing your employers

(using your student loans/grants and financial aid) for more than just getting an education

and paying for the reasonably related activities that are part of that education (food, gas,

rent, electric, etc...). Many employers would give you one chance for such a gross abuse of

policy. For me and many like me - I believe in the times we live in - you should be fired!

Tens of thousands of people are unemployed, thousands of those are homeless and all of them

are seeking desperately needed aid to feed their families - and here you are on national TV

telling the world how you believe you have a right to get the government to pay for your

physical pleasures. Shame on you!

As for RUSH and his comments - though he went beyond what I would consider courteous and

respectful dialog - his point is not far off - just the wrong focus. No one should be

allowed the freedom to make others pay for their mistakes. Too many of the problems we have

in this country and our economy are because we keep paying for the mistakes of others.

If each citizen of this country - rich or poor - took responsibility for their actions and

did what was true to the greater good of all - we would all be in a much better life and

would have much less problems to worry about than we do right now.

There is no justification that supports continuing to expect the country to pay for something

Read Sandra Fluke's testimony where she gives the reason why women need the pills for other female problems. One of the people Sandra testified about was a lesbian so her fear was not getting pregnant...it was about treatment for her illness.

"FED", while you're reading the testimony Fluke gave to congress please note that Fluke never asked for free birth control pills. In fact she never asked for the pills for her own use. These students pay insurance premium either directly or through school tuition so it's not free. When these women go to fill the prescription for the pills just as any other drug there could be a co-pay. The problem is the church refuses to allow that prescription because it's against their religion and make the women pay the full amount. In fact they refused the medication for anyone because they questioned the doctor's need for prescribing it. According to one case a married employee had the the pills covered by the insurance company but the church deducted the money from her pay claiming it was a mistake by the insurance company. All the president's ruling does is require the insurance carrier to fill the prescription just as they would any other drug at no cost to the church and I should say hopefully without the church knowledge.

Now this idiot Limbaugh does not understand the problem or is just outright lying. By the amount of misinformation that those on the right have I would be safe to say it isn't the first time he has shot off his mouth without knowing what the hell he was talking about. I am so sick and tired of hearing about birth control. Like this is the biggest issue facing America today. Birth control was a settled issue years ago. Women who want to be on contraceptives are and I don't want to have to pay for others contraceptives. You want to have sex? YOU pay for it. With respect Larry-2260635 - your point about the "medication" aspects of birth control pills is not without warrant. There are many instances for which the BC is needed however - and I make this with clear knowledge of the pharmacological application - the BC is not the only solution but is the simplest to get and many physicians are not taking the process to resolve the underlying problem - which might be a hormonal issue or even an aspect of the cycle management. Either of which can be handled through other processes - for example the recently (last year) developed shot which is a significant advancement of the estrogen therapy that was used for years and is the basis of the BC.

Either way - my point did cover "MEDICAL NECESSITY" as I do understand there is a justification. As to the churches involvement - one has to ask - if a church has this position - and you as a patron of the church have a valid medical need - why would you continue to follow the church and/or be involved in anything in which the church has control.

With regard to her testimony - yes, your point is well made - she did not ask for them for herself. The point I am making isn't about what she was asking for - it was about how the act of allowing this to be covered by medical insurance - would result in the outrageous abuse by anyone who just wanted the "Pill" so they could play safely. A valid medical need - that's one thing - but for anything else (consensual sex) I cannot agree that it should be covered at all. The real problem isn't about the coverage - for a valid medical need - but the fact that distinction of that need has become impossible to place in the script therefore preventing the carrier from knowing if it is for medical need or sex participation/pregnancy prevention.

Now to your other point - about it not being free - regardless of how you look at it - if the patient is only paying the co-pay part of the "drug" then someone else is paying for the rest of it - either the government or the medical carrier. The result is essentially the same - someone else - pays for the privilege.

My point still stands - "Enough is Enough". Far too many things that "ARE NOT NECESSARY" are being deemed necessary in the public eye and therefore part of what is expected of the government to provide. Continuing in this direction has only one result - we will bankrupt ourselves to provide these "NONESSENTIAL" essentials and then no one will get anything for their efforts.

This country needs to get back to basics. Politicians should be trying to solve the economic issues. Not sticking their nose into the HMO and other providers business and directing them to cover this thing or that. Deal with the things that are really necessary. If there is an issue with medical need - the rest - the individual should consider that not every provider serves their product in the same way. Stop asking the rest of the country to foot the bill.

Fed up- Do you understand what an insurance premium is?? You know that thing people pay once a month so they can go to the Dr.?? The young lady in the story and the women that she talked about all pay insurance premiums. So the copay is relatively small, but, What is their monthly premium?? I had an injury 4 years ago, couldn't work, disability ins., paid leave, etc.. all ran out. Had to go COBRA with my plan and at the end of that the Ins. company had portability. You think that's nice.?? The premium costs me $445 a month. For me alone. It was about $50 more when I was working. However, it covered my spouse and 4 kids. Think I could use a break???

Additionally, and again, since it has been said several times already in this thread, contraceptives do not merely protect against unwanted pregnancy. They are prescribed for many other valid health reasons, such as abnormally heavy periods, migraine relief, and many others.

@ FED UP- A lot of "unnecessary" things are covered by health insurance. Viagara is typically covered. No medical necessity there. Drug and alcohol treatment are usually covered to some extent, and they are completely unnecessary unless the patient chooses to use drugs or alcohol. Smoking-cessation aids are typically covered, and they are unnecessary unless someone has chosen to start smoking. Weight loss aids are usually covered, including groups like Weight Watchers, lap-band surgery, sometimes even gym memberships, and most of the time these would be unnecessary were it not for the insured's lifestyle choices. Obesity caused by overeating causes any number of medical problems that are covered by insurance. Insurance still pays for insulin and heart bypass surgery, even if the need for them is directly brought about by the individual's eating choices. For that matter, if Rush went out and caught syphilis, his insurance would cover the treatment, despite the fact that his catching the disease would have been entirely brought about by his having sex. So, why should all of these "unnecessary" items be covered, but contraception excluded? Maybe, just maybe, it's because some people just think girls should be punished for having sex.

Women who want to be on contraceptives are and I don't want to have to pay for others contraceptives.

The Democrats instituted a law which mandates that everyone including women purchase a health insurance plan. The cost of the health insurance plan FAR exceeds the cost of a newly covered option "birth control" (1,200-and above insurance less than 1000 birth control). Now you are complaining that somehow you are paying for the women's contraceptive when in fact SHE is paying for your care through her insurance premium.

If you want to argue unfairness then lets stop attacking the victim of the new law by calling them names they are not or accusing them of steeling YOUR money.

Before you start with the technically the employer pays or the college pays let me just remind you that employers and colleges just pass their cost on to the employee (less pay) or the college (more tuition).

I am sure Ron Paul understands that in the end run it is the individual (including the women employees using the birth control coverage) that pay the additional cost of a mandated health insurance plan. I am sure Ron Paul understands that when you mandate health insurance the cost of health insurance will go up because there is no incentive for the health care providers, lawyers, or health insurance companies to be competitive.

I think you have the order of some of that backwards....Logically, if one cannot accept the truth, then one WILL not judge the truth. As far as the free speech thing, I have to know if YOU, prestwood, think that we ought to only be free to agree with you, or if the founding fathers, realizing that people will see things from different angles, decided centuries ago to allow all to speak as long as it is not so harmful to others.

Limbaugh's "apology" on his website is anything but "sincere". He again uses veiled personal attacks in stating,

"I think it is absolutely absurd that during these very serious political times, we are discussing personal sexual recreational activities before members of Congress."

Any sincere apology would be clearly stated BY LIMBAUGH in front of his audience on his show...and would be unequivocal, WITHOUT explanations condoning his hateful speech and including further derogatory attacks. That will never happen, because this narcistic, delusional hypocrite is not capable of remorse or human decency.

That said, I respect religious freedom, however I wonder if this issue should really be framed in that light. The University is not directly providing healthcare insurance to my understanding, but rather they contract a medical insurance provider who provides the insurance, much like they contract teachers and professors to teach the students. If a University professor is using contraception, or doesn't attend mass every week, or in some way violates catholic teaching, the University allows for the fact that not everyone associated with the University follows all Catholic religious doctrine. Why would the University not also allow for the fact that the insurance coverage, also provided by an outside, contracted insurance provider, may not follow all Catholic religious doctrine?

Furthermore, sexual relations outside of marriage is against the Catholic religious doctrine. Does the University allow their contracted Insurance company to provide medical treatment for STD's (sexually transmitted diseases), or is that a "non-allowable benefit", also, since the behavior that necessitates treatment is forbidden in Catholic teaching?

Something to think about...this is not an attack on the Catholic religion in any way...I fully respect religious freedom and the right to follow beliefs. I just think this view may help the Church to find a way to see the insurance provider as a separate entity, and not necessarily representing Catholic doctrine in complete compliance, but rather representing religious freedom FOR their students, who vary greatly in beliefs and who actually pay for their own insurance through their University tuition and fees.

You will notice that there wasn't an inkling of an apology until Rush's sponsors started retreating to higher ground. This guy is the quintessential phony. He is pimping his loyal dittoheads and they think he is their savior. For their blind dedication to their "anointed one" they get incredible hubris and really someone who could care less about their particular plights.

AP-11414066: You make a good point about INSURANCE coverage. The problem with most of us is that we don't take care of ourselves, our nation's ~30% obesity supports this, but rely on pills and medications to cure any condition we may have. Insurance coverage should not be a blanket that covers all things for all people.

I have the free will and the freedom to eat and drink, but if I do not exercise self-discipline/control and make right choices I can cause myself health problems that could require medication or lead to surgery. So to your point why should you have to pay for my bad choices? I don't think you should, in fact why should I get a free pass when I have been wrecking my body with my own free will?

I agree with having coverage for Birth Control, but not in the same way that many of you think it should be administered. Most women could use natural family planning methods of birth control instead of popping pills or using devices. Sure people scoff at the idea, but why is it necessary to have someone else control your body when if men and women knew a few simple things about the beautiful female body in most cases it is very simple to implement birth control yourself. From my experience, women like to be respected and what better way to respect a woman is to show self-control in regards to having sex.

How many women actually need to be popping pills or using devices for birth control? I would bet very few (abnormal menstrual cycles) as there are numerous ways to naturally discern and implement self-control if you and your partner (hopefully a spouse, but if not yet maybe someday). I think certain things like abortion and birth control pills/devices aren't necessary. If you really think that artifical hormones in your body are better than what your own body creates maybe its for you, but I'd rather not pay for it.

In closing, there are many things we go to the doctor for that we could do without if we were just a little more knowledgable. Instead of spending so much money on artifical means to regulate the human body or "fix" it when it isn't broken why don't we save our money by using the intelligent brain that God (if you don't believe in God substitute whatever you like here) gave us and train ourselves with self-control and self-discipline?

Here is something for all of you to think about?

I am a man, I pay taxes at 38% If you are a woman, and you pay taxes at 38%, Where does the coverage come from for contraception? Does it just come form the 38% paid by the female worker? NO It would come from the general fund paid for by both men and women. So I am essentially being made pay for a women's contraception.

Now I know there are arguments being made in the reverse. (Prostrate Cancer, Vasectomy, and so on) but I do not feel it is right for a women to help pay for a benefit for someone else.

That is why I am prefer to carry my own coverage. rather than being lumped in with a vast group. Where I was made well aware of a fact that I had not forgotten. We pay for insurance by the way we choose to live our lives I am in a higher risk environment and therefore I need to pay more for insurance where as someone with an office job does not. Now I know there are variables that affect that statement without mentioning all. Smoking, Obesity, physical fitness, etc.

But a general policy such as HCR is a joke. Everyone who wants health insurance should be able to acquire a policy aimed at the way they choose to live their own lives. Those who cannot afford a custom policy should get a trimmed down generic policy with coverage for basic health requirments.

Why is it that the blowhards on the blog think that just because someone is under priviledged. They should have the same things that I have worked my tail off for.

Maybe there is an incentive for them to go out and try a little harder to achieve, and be successful.

But is it right to take food from my table just to give it to someone who will not go out and help themselves?

clint, the problem is that some insurance companies do not cover birth control and the one's who do cover it, it's still expensive. no one is saying it's a free ride to have tons of sex. this is about personal responsibility. women use birth control to be responsible. how about insurance companies covering men start covering prenatal care for the women they impregnate? the cost of everything is placed on a woman, men do not have to do anything. if they get a woman pregnant, they could walk away and be a dead beat. they are not covering the bills of prenatal care, birth or contraception. it's a real kick in the pants that viagra is covered by insurance, that is something that is saying 'go out and have tons of sex'. so why is it wrong for a woman to have sex but not a man?

We have become a society where everything is expected to be given to us. I saw a story the other day where the Dept of Agriculture was saying that they were dispensing the most food stamps in the history of the program. In the same article, the same Dept. of Agriculture (through the Parks Dept) was urging people not to feed wild animals. calling this hearing on women’s health and for allowing me to testify on
behalf of the women who will benefit from the Affordable Care Act
contraceptive coverage regulation.

“My name is Sandra Fluke, and I’m a third-year student at Georgetown Law
School. I’m also a past-president of Georgetown Law Students for Reproductive

and all of the student activists with us and thank them so much for being here

“We, as Georgetown LSRJ, are here today because we’re so grateful that this
regulation implements the non-partisan medical advice of the Institute of
Medicine.
“I attend a Jesuit law school that does not provide contraceptive coverage in
its student health plan. And just as we students have faced financial,
emotional, and medical burdens as a result, employees at
religiously-affiliated hospitals and institutions and universities across the
country have suffered similar burdens.
“We are all grateful for the new regulation that will meet the critical health
care needs of so many women.
“Simultaneously, the recently announced adjustment addresses any potential
conflict with the religious identity of Catholic or Jesuit institutions.
“When I look around my campus, I see the faces of the women affected by this
lack of contraceptive coverage.

“And especially in the last week, I have heard more and more of their stories.
On a daily basis, I hear yet from another woman from Georgetown or from
another school or who works for a religiously-affiliated employer, and they
tell me that they have suffered financially and emotionally and medically
because of this lack of coverage.
“And so, I’m here today to share their voices, and I want to thank you for
allowing them – not me – to be heard.
“Without insurance coverage, contraception, as you know, can cost a woman over
$3,000 during law school. For a lot of students who, like me, are on public
interest scholarships, that’s practically an entire summer’s salary. 40% of
the female students at Georgetown Law reported to us that they struggle
financially as a result of this policy.
“One told us about how embarrassed and just powerless she felt when she was
standing at the pharmacy counter and learned for the first time that
contraception was not covered on her insurance and she had to turn and walk
away because she couldn’t afford that prescription. Women like her have no
choice but to go without contraception.
“Just last week, a married female student told me that she had to stop using
contraception because she and her husband just couldn’t fit it into their
budget anymore. Women employed in low-wage jobs without contraceptive coverage
face the same choice.
“And some might respond that contraception is accessible in lots of other
ways. Unfortunately, that’s just not true.
“Women’s health clinic provide a vital medical service, but as the Guttmacher
Institute has definitely documented, these clinics are unable to meet the
crushing demand for these services. Clinics are closing, and women are being
forced to go without the medical care they need.
“How can Congress consider the [Rep. Jeff] Fortenberry (R-Neb.), [Sen. Marco]
Rubio (R-Fla.) and [Sen. Roy] Blunt (R-Mo.) legislation to allow even more
employers and institutions to refuse contraception coverage and then respond
that the non-profit clinics should step up to take care of the resulting
medical crisis, particularly when so many legislators are attempting to
de-fund those very same clinics?
“These denial of contraceptive coverage impact real people.
“In the worst cases, women who need these medications for other medical
conditions suffer very dire consequences.

“A friend of mine, for example, has polycystic ovarian syndrome, and she has
to take prescription birth control to stop cysts from growing on her ovaries.
Her prescription is technically covered by Georgetown’s insurance because it’s
not intended to prevent pregnancy.
“Unfortunately, under many religious institutions and insurance plans, it
wouldn’t be. There would be no exception for other medical needs. And under
Sen. Blunt’s amendment, Sen. Rubio’s bill or Rep. Fortenberry’s bill there’s
no requirement that such an exception be made for these medical needs.
“When this exception does exist, these exceptions don’t accomplish their
well-intended goals because when you let university administrators or other
employers rather than women and their doctors dictate whose medical needs are
legitimate and whose are not, women’s health takes a back seat to a
bureaucracy focused on policing her body.
“In 65% of the cases at our school, our female students were interrogated by
insurance representatives and university medical staff about why they needed
prescription and whether they were lying about their symptoms.
“For my friend and 20% of the women in her situation, she never got the
insurance company to cover her prescription. Despite verifications of her
illness from her doctor, her claim was denied repeatedly on the assumption
that she really wanted birth control to prevent pregnancy. She’s gay. So
clearly polycystic ovarian syndrome was a much more urgent concern than
accidental pregnancy for her.
“After months paying over $100 out-of-pocket, she just couldn’t afford her
medication anymore, and she had to stop taking it.
“I learned about all of this when I walked out of a test and got a message
from her that in the middle of the night in her final exam period she’d been
in the emergency room. She’d been there all night in just terrible,
excruciating pain. She wrote to me, ‘It was so painful I’d woke up thinking
I’ve been shot.’
“Without her taking the birth control, a massive cyst the size of a tennis
ball had grown on her ovary. She had to have surgery to remove her entire
ovary as a result.
“On the morning I was originally scheduled to give this testimony, she was
sitting in a doctor’s office, trying to cope with the consequences of this
medical catastrophe.
“Since last year’s surgery, she’s been experiencing night sweats and weight
gain and other symptoms of early menopause as a result of the removal of her
ovary. She’s 32-years-old.
“As she put it, ‘If my body indeed does enter early menopause, no fertility
specialist in the world will be able to help me have my own children. I will
have no choice at giving my mother her desperately desired grandbabies simply
because the insurance policy that I paid for, totally unsubsidized by my
school, wouldn’t cover my prescription for birth control when I needed it.’
“Now, in addition

“Because this is the message that not requiring coverage of contraception
sends: A woman’s reproductive health care isn’t a necessity, isn’t a priority.
“One woman told us that she knew birth control wasn’t covered on the insurance
and she assumed that that’s how Georgetown’s insurance handle all of women’s
reproductive and sexual health care. So when she was raped, she didn’t go to
the doctor, even to be examined or tested for sexually transmitted infections,
because she thought insurance wasn’t going to cover something like that –
something that was related to a woman’s reproductive health.
“As one other student put it: ‘This policy communicates to female students
that our school doesn’t understand our needs.’
“These are not feelings that male fellow student experience and they’re not
burdens that male students must shoulder.
“In the media lately, some conservative Catholic organizations have been
asking what did we expect when we enroll in a Catholic school?
“We can only answer that we expected women to be treated equally, to not have
our school create untenable burdens that impede our academic success.
“We expected that our schools would live up to the Jesuit creed of ‘cura
personalis‘ – to care for the whole person – by meeting all of our medical
needs.
“We expected that when we told our universities of the problem this policy
created for us as students, they would help us.
“We expected that when 94% of students oppose the policy the university would
respect our choices regarding insurance students pay for – completely
unsubsidized by the university.
“We did not expect that women would be told in the national media that we
should have gone to school elsewhere.
“And even if that meant going to a less prestigious university, we refuse to
pick between a quality education and our health. And we resent that in the
21st century, anyone think it’s acceptable to ask us to make this choice
simply because we are women.
“Many of the women whose stories I’ve shared today are Catholic women. So ours
is not a war against the church. It is a struggle for the access to the health
care we need.
“The President of the Association of Jesuit Colleges has shared that Jesuit
colleges and the universities appreciate the modifications to the rule
announced recently. Religious concerns are addressed and women get the health
care they need. And I sincerely hope that that is something we can all agree
upon.
“Thank you very much.”
