Police carry one of the dozens of protesters arrested inside the state capitol in Sacramento, California, on Monday.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- A day of boisterous protests over cuts to higher education that included thousands of students swarming the state Capitol ended with dozens of arrests after demonstrators refused to leave the building.
Authorities on Monday evening arrested 68 people, most of whom will be charged with trespassing, the California Highway Patrol said. Four people were arrested earlier in the day.
Police started pulling out protesters who remained in the Capitol rotunda around 7:30 p.m. (10:30 p.m. ET), more than an hour after they began warning them with a bullhorn to leave.
NBC Sacramento reported that some protesters identified themselves as being part of the Occupy Sacramento group.
Protesters chanted "We're doing this for your kids," as one by one they were lifted by the arms, handcuffed with plastic ties, and led away.
Students angry over steep tuition increases and fewer courses at California's public universities and colleges waved signs and chanted, "They say cut back; we say fight back."
Tuition has nearly doubled in the past five years, to $13,000 for resident undergraduates at University of California schools and to $6,400 at California State University schools. Community college fees are set to rise to $46 per unit by this summer, up from $20 per unit in 2007.
Democratic lawmakers addressed the group and lamented the deep cuts to higher education they have made in recent years.
"We were expecting to have a good future, but things are looking uncertain for a lot of families," said Alison Her, 19, a nursing student at California State University, Fresno. "I'm the oldest in my family, and I want my siblings to be able to go to college, too."
Public schools 'eroded year after year'
After the rally, hundreds of students lined up to enter the Capitol and filled conference rooms and hallways inside. Some met with lawmakers to lobby for increased funding for higher education, while others headed for the rotunda.
CHP officers allowed several hundred students to settle on the black and white marble floor of the rotunda before all four hallway entrances to the area were blocked. Another hundred students sat down in a hallway, communicating with fellow protesters by call and response, in a manner characteristic of the Occupy movement, The Daily Californian reported.
Several lawmakers watched from a second-floor balcony as the protesters were later arrested.
Outside the Capitol, hundreds of protesters who had lingered into the evening disbursed after the arrested protesters were taken away in vans. Officers in riot gear guarded the underground exits where they were taken out.
Earlier in the day, three women were arrested for disobeying an officer's order after trying to unfurl a banner on the second floor. A man was arrested outside the building for being in possession of a switchblade knife, the CHP said.
Gov. Jerry Brown said in a statement that the protest highlights the need for California voters to approve a tax increase he has proposed for the November ballot.
"The students today are reflecting the frustrations of millions of Californians who have seen their public schools and universities eroded year after year," said Brown, a Democrat. "That's why it's imperative that we get more tax revenue this November."
Brown's initiative would fund education and public safety programs by temporarily raising income taxes on people who make more than $250,000 a year and temporarily increasing the sales tax by half a cent.
The University of California Student Association has endorsed a rival initiative that would tax millionaires and earmark the revenue for education. The California Federation of Teachers and state PTA support that initiative.
Buses brought hundreds of students in for Monday's march from as far away as the University of California, Riverside, 450 miles south of Sacramento.

Over the last several decades far too many have asked for government to provide benefits and programs, but they did not want to pay for those services themselves, they wanted someone else to foot the bill. That has never worked in any country, and it won't work here. The bill has now come due and those benefits and programs must be cut back.

Eff Tax Rate sounds like merely more Accounting Nonsense.
All that really counts is the Rich have had at least 100% decrease in their Legal Federal Income Tax Rate from 70% to 35% since 1980. How well the Mega Rich can cheat on their Taxes today is another question entirely!

MUB - when will folks learn that what historical marginal tax rates happen to be do not matter because the tax shelters and other loopholes kept those higher rates from having much of an impact. That is why the Congressional Budget Office publishes data on EFFECTIVE tax rates. Only two things matter. How much TOTAL income did someone have, including all tax exempt income, and how much federal income tax was paid on that total income. That takes all the deductions, credits, loopholes, etc. out of the equation. It is the most pure measure of how much tax people actually pay on their income. You may not like the answer, but all the data from the IRS and Congressional Budget Office says that those in top income groups are now paying a higher percentage of all individual federal income tax since before WWII. The top 1% pay almost 40% of federal income tax. The top 3% pay more than the entire bottome 97%, and the group of the bottom 75% pays a total as a group of only a mere 14% of federal income tax revenue.

Here is an example for you MUB. Back in 1955 there were high marginal rates. Someone filing a joint return would pay the 90% rate on income above $2.5 million. Did anyone back in 1955 have income at that level?? No, but if they had it they would pay that rate. In 2009 to get into the top 1% of incomes you needed an AGI of $344,000. To get in the top 0.1% you needed an AGI of about $1.4 million. Even most of the very top income earners of today don't hit the $2.5 million number.
Nobody has "siezed" anyones wealth. Those in the top 1% of wealth have about the same percentage of the total wealth in the nation today as they did back in the early 1920s, about 35%. Bill Gates and Warren Buffett did not sieze anything. Nor did Oprah or the Goggle Guys or Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook fame. Wealth is not distributed, it is earned. The financial pie is not limited. Because some have more does not mean that others must have less.

If you want to tax the wealthiest people even more than they already are (the top 20% pays about 85% of tax dollars collected) what about the almost 50% that pay virtually no income tax? Maybe if EVERYONE had some skin in the game, things might be different. You obviously do not know what effective tax rates are. If 3% of the population is paying about 97% of taxes COLLECTED, that would mean that the bottom 97% pay in about 3% of taxes COLLECTED. I realize that this somehow seems fair to you, but believe me when I say it is always easy to get someone to take from someone else, especially if that person has more than you. When EVERYONE has some skin in the game, then a compromise might be reached. But for people who pay NOTHING to scream that others are not paying their fair share is ridiculous.

The one good thing that has come from the occupy movement that most agree upon is that corporations are controlling this country completely.
Watching the rise of the occupy movement has been an eye opener on how these corporations work the government for their own interests.
The more entitlements the government gives, the more people want. I saw lets get down to the bare bones and cut all the unnecessary entitlements!
How is raising taxes ever going to be temporary if they don't change what caused this problem in the first place? Of course that won't happen because California is so enlightened... enlightened right into an uncontrolled fiscal downward spiral... Get ready everyone else, they'll be putting their hands into every other states pockets soon to pay for their failed policies. But at least we can all hug and say we love each other easier from a bread line.

What's the difference between Iran and the US. Iran arrests or shoots DEMONSTRATORS and the US "ARRESTS" them. Both force people to SHUT UP.
No one told the protestors to shut up. They were merely asked to leave when the building's closing time arrived. They refused, and after more then an hour of waiting, the cops finally arrested them. No one said they couldn't come back and protest the next day during the opening times of the building.
Well, from looking at the picture of the protestor being arrested, it is refreshing to see that our educational tax dollars have not been wasted. She looks like the epitome of brilliance! I can see that spending more than any other country per student for education has really paid off big-time!

Maybe that was the BEST picture they could show. Maybe the other pictures put the protestors in a worse light! What 'courage" does it take to yell and sit? I think it takes a lot more courage to work a job and attend school at the same time. It takes courage to support yourself, not rely on others doing for you. If raising tuition costs is necessary, then that is what must be done. Why should everyone else be expected to pick up the slack so you can go to college cheaply?

So MUW, what I asked was about PUBLIC property. I specifically said a public university in the example. What part didn't you understand? I asked if me and 67 of my friends could protest on the 50-yard line while a marching band was performing, since we are all citizens. If it makes it easier for you, let's just say we are protesting because we do not believe our tax dollars should be going to support a marching band. Is it really that hard for you to just answer yes or no?

Why don't the protestors protest at the colleges that are charging so much? Why don't they question why a tenured university professor can teach only 1 or 2 classes while drawing in 100k in salary and benefits? And, why, in this day and age of easy-to-get college loans and myriad programs for grants and financial aid, do some students feel entitled to anything more? If they can't figure out how to pay for college in these times, maybe the real truth is that they just aren't college material to begin with.
Wrap your thoughts around this. Students already have to mortgage their lives to get an education to compete for what few jobs that do exist. Do you really think it is fair for students to graduate with a debt as large as a house payment? It is difficult enough if not impossible to survive on one income without the student loan. Our system is broken and there is no quick fix, rising tuition costs is the worst thing they could do.
You can go to community college for two years, and that is relatively cheap. Credits will transfer for your last 2 years at a 4-year college. You can also take online courses for much cheaper than regular classes. You can go to summer school to get done faster. You can take a full load instead of the 8-12 hours many students take. You can work and pay as you go. You can work and save for a couple of years if you don't want to work during school. The fact is many people go to college and don't have the crushing debt you are talking about. It is all about priorities. Why aren't you questioning the tenured professor who only teaches 1 or 2 classes while drawing down a hefty salary plus benefits? You don't think that adds to the costs? How about illegal immigrants getting the same rates as instate students, but less than out-of-state students? You don't think that could add to the costs, do you?
More importantly Earl look how Mega Corporate Owned MSNBC covers up another "Not Really" an Occupation Protest.....with 68 more Americans Arrested just for exercising their (not real) RIGHTS!

When you break the law while protesting you are no longer protected by the right of freedom of speech. In this case they were charged with trespassing. It is that simple.

The argument can be made, successfully, that some people, no matter their circumstances, rise above the crowd and excel no matter the odds. They do not need someone else to provide for them. I would be willing to bet that if you stripped many rich people of their money and possessions, in less than 10 years they would once again be successful. Conversely, if you gave some people a couple of hundred thousand dollars, in less than 10 years they would be absolutley no better off than they were before you gave them the money. In other words, it is a good thing to WORK.
As far as Occupy goes, it will die out just as soon as the media and the politicians quit talking them up. You haven't heard much from them since winter set in, have you? Maybe you should look up some stats on how many people are employed by small businesses, MUW. And at how much in taxes they pay compared to the almost 50% that do not pay income tax. Government was never meant to be all things for all people. It is NOT the government's, or my, responsibility to clothe, shelter and feed you. It is YOUR responsibility.
And stop being so melodramatic---no one arrested at that protest will ever do prison time for that, and you very well know it. They will have to pay a small fine, maybe 6 months probation (doubtful), maybe a little community service--which wouldn't EVER be a problem for those fine, upstanding citizens, right?
And you claiming that corporations are using so much more of our government infrastructure, which they pay for, is absurd. Why aren't their tax dollars better than the person who pays no income taxes and yet travels the same roads, uses the same bridges, uses the public schools to educate their children, perhaps recieves MORE than they paid in taxes as a refund (read that as welfare), perhaps has children getting free meals at school, perhaps recieving Section 8 housing allowances, perhaps getting food stamps, perhaps getting utility aid, perhaps getting a free cell phone?

It's a shame people get arrested for protesting. I watched the cops in New York force the people into the street; then force them back on the sidewalk for blocking the streets. The one good thing that has come from the occupy movement that most agree upon is that corporations are controlling this country completely.
Watching the rise of the occupy movement has been an eye opener on how these corporations work the government for their own interests and how they can disrupt any group that is seen as a threat to them.
Prime example of what is yet to come in Corporate Owned America. If they have their way everyone will become slaves and imprisoned if you fail to support them.
